  • No, Tennistic Productions, the Agassi point was much WORSE than you said! (See 6:00 in the video.) You said the only call that matters is the chair umpire's, but all THREE umpires wrongly called the ball in. The chair umpire, the baseline umpire, and the sideline umpire all called it in, but it was inches past the back corner, so both wide and long. Something that terrible occasionally happens when the receiving player's body blocks the umpire(s) from seeing the ball land, but here, both players were far away, so all three umpires had a clear view. This combination of umpiring errors at the same time is the worst thing that could have happened. As an umpire, I'd guess that all three umpires expected the ball to be hit far from where it actually was hit, so they didn't prepare, but still three terrible mistakes.

  • Not to say that I wouldn't make mistake myself, but compared to other sports, a tennis umpire is kind of "the easiest job in the world": they have a small court to cover while being seated at a vantage point, half a dozen of linespeople each focused on a single line to judge, and backup technology to help review every single ball... for example, footbal umpires get so much crap, but they are require to cover a way larger court while actively running for 90 minutes, and with a point of view that is at ground level and obstructed by 22 other people. Like, there is no excuse about how 2 linesman and one chair umpire missed a ball out by a mile at 6:30 Having said that, tennis players are often not an easy bunch to manage... especially in a lot of "replay the point vs the call came late" situations, players are more often than not wrong in judging the timing of when they/the opponent actually hit the ball in relation to the linesman call
