This is one of the most expensive new phones of 2023, costing hundreds more than the Plus model - in the UK, it costs from £1249, rising to £1599. While most of the specs and that design are close to last year's smartphone, the Samsung S23 Ultra does boast a fresh HP2 camera sensor which can capture good looking night shots. Video still struggles in low light, vs the Oppo Find X5 Pro and some other flagship Androids. But most people should be very happy with the results.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset rather than Samsung's Exynos efforts, so gaming is sublime and battery life also seems just as good as the S22 version. And One UI 5.1 is certainly packed with features, although the doubling up of apps with Google is still annoying. But the S Pen stylus is a solid USP, which others like the iPhone 14 Pro Max don't offer.

This is the first time I've dropped on a Samsung flagship since the first Galaxy S. I can't wait for my preorder to arrive. The awesome camera, improved performance and a Snapdragon chip brought me round to it, no more toasty exynos handwarmer on a high end device at last. I tend to keep my phones for a few years, so the additional support and updates are a distinct positive to me. And your review on the A53 made me get one as my work phone, they've come on leaps and bounds since the last time I used a A Series which was a A5 in 2017 that was slower than a sofa being pushed by a sloth 🤣
I only watch a few videos of the Samsung S23 Ultra and you are the only person who mentions sim card tray and water proof what I didn't know about. I am looking into in my next phone I buy. Thank you so much, keep up the good work!!

Great review you hit all the key points that differentiate this model from the previous one. In my opinion Samsung is the leader in this segment, even supplying screens to Apple. The pictures are just sublime and the new chip-set is from the brand that should have been in all models from when it was first available. They should supply a plastic case, screen protector and charger for such a premium unit, no excuses.
Cheers! And yes, some kind of protective case or cover would've been good, even though it's Victus 2 - so far it's still pristine, but we'll see how it fares long term

@@joefox9875 For the price, a fast charger would be ideal in the box or an option to not get one and a discount. However that's too much work and this is business I guess... Some of us are coming from a S9 for example so we don't have a fast charger.

I always like the wallpapers you put on the devices you present.
Something that I think would be good if you started including support in your reviews is the Alt Displayport support. Such as video out on the usb-c port and DEX support (for samsung devices). I use this regularly and it is a decision factor for my purchases. I also like the support for battery protection modes on the newer samsung devices that were missing on my xiaomi devices.
This is the first time I've ever pre-ordered a phone and I'm rather bloody excited 😄 I'm going from a base S21 and I've got tiny wee hands but I couldn't resist going straight to the Ultra. Hopefully get used to the size before I drop the thing!

Nice, that's a solid upgrade - the battery life alone is miles better! I'm gradually getting used to these almighty near-7-inch phones, although I definitely still prefer a compact model!

The Mic hole near the sim ejector tool hole has been a thing for a few generations, I first had the issue with the S10 series. The good news is the mic is off to the side of that hole so no damage can be caused by accidently poking the sim tool in there.

@@cheryl5994 I had an S10e and the SIM card slot and microphone were on the same end of the phone albeit on opposite sides and not directly next to each other. I still managed to put the sim tool in the microphone and thought I may have damaged something but that as the latest models had the microphone and waterproof seal off to the side, not directly in front of the hole.
I'm so confused. Does this phone have a micro SD card storage or is that just the sim card?

Taking the jump from the Z Fold 3. Just like the sound of the processor and camera. Plus the screen size, although smaller than the Z Fold 3 when open. Great video and it has sold it to me even more.

I'm also coming from the Z Fold 3. Just so sick of the small cover screen...amongst other things.
Coming from Fold 3 too. Gonna miss it a lot to be honest, but I want the better cameras! Also some of my banking apps didn't look great on either Fold screen and sometimes using the camera for verification was funky.
How's the adjustment? I'm on a Fold 2, and I'm torn between pre-ordering this or waiting until the Fold 5. The fingerprint sensor and the gestures that come with it are probably my biggest deciding factor.

Shiny shamphered edges never really bothered me but once i went black edges on the s21 ultra.. because that was the only choice at the time for that model.. i can't go back to the shiny aluminum. Lol Like that sky blue exclusive color. Last year it had black on the sides but now samsung changed it to shiny.

Your reviews always make me chuckle! Just pre-ordered an S23 Ultra in 'Online Exclusive Red'. I'm coming up to the end of my repayments for the Note 20 Ultra and would say it is worth it, as long as the double storage offer is still on and you have a flagship Samsung phone to trade in to get them monthly repayments down to just over £20 per month over 36 months with Samsung Finance. Can't wait to get rid of this Exynos rubbish!

Maybe I can help you with the low Geekbench results: both SIngle and Multi scores indicate that the "Light" performance profile is activated. Just change it to Standard. A very good video btw., thank you.
Thanks for watching! It is set to 'Standard' performance, but to be fair benchmarking is a haphazard practice at the best of times anyway. Important thing is that everything has been creamy smooth in real life use, as expected
@@TechSpurt Thank you for the quick reply. It is strange, but as you said, these scores are not relevant for real life use. If I may: set it to light and the only difference that you are going to notice is the benchmark result😁. This is the case on my Fold 4 and it saves also battery.

I have it on pre-order... I have always gone for the top of the Samsung Galaxy S range. For once, it'll be good to have a Snapdragon based handset. I am curious to see how much the SoC improves the overall experience. Also, I am hoping for a big improvement in photo and video capture.

Yeah, this is very tempting. I switched to Sony because of the Exynos chipset but now without it, it could well be my next phone.
Snapdragon or not it loses 50% value over a year and S24U will bring real upgrades, thus preordering is a cash burn
I can promise you it's a night and day difference 🩵 I received mine before the weekend and is such a big difference between this one and the s22u with Exynos that I had before. The Exynos variant felt like $400 phone but this one feels and operates like a $1500 phone.

Upgrades are incremental. However using the snapdragon chip for all is a step in right direction. I would be most interested in what Samsung will bring on their Fold 5
How did you find the shutter speed Uncle Spurt?
Kind of like that, "boxy" look with the flatter edges. I was hoping they would find a way to avoid the cameras jutting out in the back, but maybe with the advances made by LG on camera, Samsung finds a similar update in coming years. For now, I will hold on to the S23 Ultra I pre-ordered just a day after the Unpacked event. It seems worth going for the 1 TB option, after all the discounts. The high prices only meet the expected prices a few months from now, when I go for the highest storage option. It's going to be a limited edition, anyway. Samsung still leading the way with premium smartphones. Why did they put the SIM card tray all the way *down*, near the USB-C? The SIM tray at top seemed more reasonable, at least the mid-range A series have it there.
Great vid, I think we're at the stage with camera phones where they aren't going to improve majorly for another 5 years. If you have an s22 I wouldn't bother upgrading.

Something I've noticed that you very rarely bring up is the connectivity. I bought the Pixel 7pro and it's the worst phone I have ever owned for the connectivity. Admittedly I live in the arse end of the North (Burnley) but my Pixel 3aXL has twice the download speed compared to the 7pro. There's sod all 5G around here, so I turned that off which improved it marginally but it just has a shite modem. Testing the connectivity on these phones would be very helpful to those of us who live in areas that still need levelling up ;-)

I got a black 512gb S23 Ultra + a set of Galaxy Buds2 and a Samsung case for £1250. You get double the storage for free if you pre order and the accessories free. I'll probably sell my 6 month old S22 Ultra 512gb for £750ish rather than trade it in.

Ive watched a million reviews of jst about every phone you can think of and one thing ive learned is if ur buying a smartphone mostly for the camera then ur wasting ur money. For $1K+ you can get an amazing dedicated camera and still have money left over for a decent midranger (All phones do the same thing nowadays anyway) Ive even learned this lesson the hard way, I bought a s21 5G back in 2021 because Im working and can finally afford a good phone. My intention is to use my phone for aslong as possible and only replace the battery when necessary. Due to it having great cameras and a flagship SOC (despite being Exynos), it will last at least 5 years even if the software support ends!

Have they fixed the lag issues I had the s22 ultra for a while and sold it as the lag in the menus etc was awful considering buying this and selling my iPhone 14 pro max
9:44 does the back of the phone vibrate when the speaker is playing? my note10+ does that and it's so distracting.

Was debating whether or not I should wait for the S24 or just go ahead and get the S23 Ultra. Made the decision last night and pre-ordered. First time watching your videos and you're an entertaining guy, although I think you made a mistake on the geekbench section where you said the device has 12gb of RAM, I think it's actually 8gb - I think only the 512gb and the 1TB model have 12gb of RAM.

You absolutely will not damage the mic if you accidentally poke a sim ejector tool into the mic hole lol. The Mic inside isn't directly in that hole. You can poke away in any of the holes, just fine.
They could've added a small mic on the Pen to give commands like Camera Modes And other shortcuts It could've been a killer feature!! And they should also bring back Heartbeat and health monitoring sensors like they had in S8 series !!

Can't you use the button to take pics anyway? No need for a camera remote with the modern S Pens. I suppose you could do more with a mic but it's hard to imagine it carrying enough power for that any time soon.

So that should tell you that not all phones are created equal off the assembly line 😂😂 Plus there are more things to look forward to like your actual day to day use, not someone else's.
I preordered the green 23 ultra upgrading finally from my note 8. It was funny last week I ordered a 22 and then I googled when the 23 is released immediately cancled my order when I saw they would be announcing it on the 1st.
If ordering from the UK, don't forget you can get an extra 10% off the phone if you add a cheap USB cable or screen protector to the order
environment arguement for not having an adapter is bs in my opinion, gotta buy another box to have an adapter when you could just make a thinner adapter that fits in the box. its not like people have an adpater that is guarenteed to work with their new phone. cuz "this adpater/ cord isnt recognized to work with samsung/ apple" means my old one plus adapter just doesnt work.
It is complete B.S. when Apple first did it, Samsung mock them for it. But when they saw that Apple got away with it, the very next year they ditched the adapter.😅
