Range Rover v BMW v Porsche: For £2,000?!
What should you do if you want a luxury SUV without the luxury price tag? Well, Mat may have the answer…
He’s gathered three second hand luxury SUVs which all cost under £2,000! We’ve got a Mk3 Range Rover, a Mk1 Porsche Cayenne and a Mk1 BMW X5.
Let’s start with the Range Rover. It’s a 2005 model with a 3.0-litre diesel engine putting out 175hp. It comes packed with wood and sumptuous leather, however that trademark split tailgate is broken. Still, we got it for just £2,000. Not bad when you consider it would’ve cost someone around £62,830 back in the day!
Fancy something a bit sportier? Maybe the Porsche Cayenne S is more your style. Back in 2003 this car would have set you back £45,000, but we nabbed this one for just £1,950. It has a thumping great 4.5-litre V8 under the bonnet with 335hp, and it should be a hoot to drive on a twisty road.
The final offering we have for you is the BMW X5. Our’s is the 4.4-litre V8 Sport model, which would have cost £45,700 when new. Now though, you can have this one for £1,800. It has 286hp, and a satisfying V8 burble.
So, which of these cut-price luxury SUVs is the best buy? Stick with Mat to find out.
The cars were covered by trade insurance, driven on the road using trade plates and had valid MOT's at the time of filming.

Totally agree.
Love these big barges, the main challenge is the upkeep and maintenance as opposed to the purchase price.
Filling the tank with inflated priced petrol?
Absolutely love cheap car reviews! This was one of the most enjoyable Carwow videos I’ve seen! Has almost the fun of the golden Age of Top Gear (the drugs and the porn comment to the other driver were absolutely hilarious btw haha) Definitely look forward to what’s next with these, and hoping to see more cheap car videos in the future! I’d avoid any goofy mods though, was always the worst part of the cheap car challenges in my opinion. (Maybe even come to the states and do a cheap American car challenge! Especially cheap pickups! That would be a guaranteed hit!!!)

What we learned here is if you've got £2000 to buy a Range rover... You can't afford a Range rover. 🤣👍🏻
I never thought the Range had rear-wheel steering, way ahead of its time!
Ironically the new ones do
And it's AI powered
Honda Prelude had it in the 80s.
No point because it’ll be in the shop all the time
Not exactly ahead of its time when nissan did it years before.
My favorite line, "Rust is lighter than carbon fiber "😂😂😂 I really enjoyed this review. Matt, U and Taylor have good chemistry. Good job guys 😄
I had a ‘54 plate ex-police Range Rover with the 4.4 V8, absolute beast, everything worked. Most comfortable car I’ve ever owned and it moved when you pushed the throttle for a 2.4 tonne car 👌🏼 10/10 would have another

A great video. And it makes arefreshing change from the usual over-price, underwhelming new stuff. Many thanks. PS: Would you do a video of cheap 'luxury' for for £5k or £10K please?
The build that Ed from VinWiki has done with the Porsche Cayennes he has bought is pretty badass. He has lifted them, added bumpers, lights, and bigger wheels and tires
Porsche Cayenne is a badass SUV.
The Cayenme is hands down the best choice here, better on road than the BMW, comparable offroad to the range Rover, and far more reliable than either. Too bad it's such an eyesore. The 958.2 Cayenne fixes that and is possibly the most complete vehicle ever built. I am not generally a fan of SUVs, but I make an exception for that.
The cayennes and Touareg’s will give built off-roaders a run for their money with a lift and tires
actually, i really like this video. Matt and Taylor good pair for this show. waiting for the next episode

Well sadly if look the next video they do get more damaged but hey they were bought for fun .
When I saw it was a Cayenne S, the first thing I wondered was if there´s an issue with cooling? I wasn´t wrong As an ex 955 Cayenne owner, here´s my tip: *Buy a Turbo or Turbo S only* 1. Turbocharged Cayennes have better cooling 2. Engine blocks are made from far more heat-proof materials 3. Huge step up in performance, and just small impact on fuel consumption. 4. You get much more equipment, including different gauges with full LCD screen 5. More aggressive front and quad pipes Do I recommend this car? Not, until fuel prices fall down. Fuel consumption can be abysmal in town driving. With my calm driving, it consumed 16,8l/100 km in urban driving. It´s quite efficient on motorway though, 10,6-11l/100 km when driving 120 km/h. And let´s not forget that we talk about a SUV which weighs almost 3000 kg! The main trick for better fuel economy is to not engage turbochargers when not necessary. Was it reliable? 1. It had issue with one of brake hoses. There was a very small hole in it, which caused Brake Booster Faulty error message. 2. Drunk parking sensors. A second control unit fixed the problem 3. Self triggering alarm. The problem was caused by bad wire in driver´s door 4. One of shock absorbers (air suspension) jammed up, and needed replacement Overall, it was very reliable. It always took me from A to B in comfort, without any problems. Things to know: 1. It drinks oil like hell. But don´t be scared, it´s normal 2. Never lift the car without switching off the air suspension. You will end up with a nightmare 3. Boot capacity is unfortunately just average, and so is the space in the back. Not the most practical SUV...
Congratulations lucky winner you have been shortlisted Use the name above to claim your prize 🆙🎁🆙🎁🎁
Nice info, does the cooling and materials apply to the 4.8s too? Is the GTS as good as the Turbo?
@@MRFUCKOFF202 Porsche solved the cooling issues in 4.8 V8. Engines were made from better materials, and plastic cooling lines were replaced with aluminium. Plastic lines were also an issue in 955 Cayenne (also Turbo) and could also lead to engine overheating. Majority of 955s had plastic lines replaced with aluminium by mechanics. You can go for every version of 957 Cayenne with 4.8 V8. They are better than 4.5 V8. You just need for watch out for PVC Valve which is connected to emission system. If it fails, you will notice increased oil consumption, exhaust smoke and the engine will not work properly. 957 is also the first Porsche to have a diesel engine (3.0 TDI). It's a economic engine with decent performance. But it often comes with a cost of worse equipment than the petrol ones. No air suspension and some more tacky interior trim. Also 3.0 TDI suffered from issues with timing chain, which could stretch. It also have DPF, which means that you have to punch it at least two times in month. Otherwise you will jam it and lose performance. It can be solved with a diagnostics (forced regen). The worst scenario here is a replacement of DPF, which is very pricey
@@ARIES6181 Awesome thanks for the info. Wouldn't really consider the diesel, it's the same tax in the UK as the petrols, has said extra issues, is significantly slower, sounds worse, diesel is now approx 10-20% more expensive and it won't be ULEZ compliant, way too many reasons to avoid for the one benefit of slightly better fuel economy than the 3.6. Red GTS manual is the dream!
@@MRFUCKOFF202 Diesel one doesn't sound that bad to be honest. Of course, a BMW 3.0d sounds better
Yeeesssss!!!! This is what I wanted! A video with a X5 . Thanks a lot Carwow.
Exactly! Not only X5 but Cayenne and range rover

Absolutely great video. I’ve been wanting to own a RR L322 since 2003 but back then couldn’t afford to buy one…. Nowadays I couldn’t afford to maintain one! As soon as I laid eyes on the Porsche I said, “Drug dealer’s car”. Lo and behold I was proven right. 😎
Matt, Taylor and Alex from AutoAlex is the trio we need!!!!
Just a tip, if you buy it for 2000 pounds, keep an extra 2000 every year for maintenance 😉
Yup
If you have a budget of £10k, buy the car for £2k, invest the rest, circa £800 per year profit towards repairs, lose 1k on trade in after a couple of years. Or pay £10k, lose £6k on trade in and still spend £££ per year for maintenance. See, it makes sense!
@@MRFUCKOFF202 thanks for the tip

As someone who has lived with a first generation BMW X5 since 2006 I must say I was very surprised by how many small parts the Range rover had in common with it.
The X5 to me still looks the most timeless than the other cars, and it still looks good today
@@TonyKimtheamusementparkfan I completely agree. I really love the first gen X5.
That model Range Rover was developed in Munich and the UK, exterior design too. In many ways it is a BMW.

But you get seated heats
@@gamingpersonality4306 thank god I'm not the only one who clocked that
@@gamingpersonality4306 seated heats lol
Anyone else watching this thinking “hmm yeah I’d have all of those…”?
You would just want the Range Rover , Surley 😅
The BMW is great, we had one of those, but a 3.0d, the issue with the gearbox is mostly related to the GCM, gearbox control module (at least it was the case with our car). The fix was to get another GCM off of ebay for 300 euros and get it replaced. The car had more then 400.000 km on it and it drove beautifully, other then them GCM and foggy headlights it had no problems.
There's no seated heats 🤣. Made my day that.
Love the granny cart reverse sirens. I also love the Rangie. I have a 2004, L322 with 222k miles, she has the 4.4L V8, a rebuilt trans at 150k miles and her only issue is an airbag light. She does not have the rust or rear suspension issue…totally tight, I love her dearly.
I have a 2005 range rover sport but it's a very rare one as it usally is powered by a 4.2 supercharged but my one has the same 4.4 N/A as your one, there is only 326 ever built of mine. I love this car dearly aswell but I am going to sell it anytime soon as it has done 124k miles and has engine lights, air suspension light, and the propshaft bearing is broken so the whole car shakes whenever you drive it. But I am going to buy another range rover, probably an svr maybe.
Cool rare RRS build. How did you get the engine spec’d? Mine is currently at 236k miles and is having her timing chain replaced, it is her largest repair to date by far.
@@janjander152 I'm not very sure, as I am not the first owner. I bought it at 3,000 miles. I think the car was maybe imported from a country where the 4.4 was available on the sport or the first owner spec'd it with the 4.4 for some reason unlike most other buyers. Either way, the car was an absolute beast when it was new.
I'm looking at an old x5 3.0d I want something I can drive to work in slight luxury and beat on the weekends with some light offroading And the m57 is 👌

As a Cayenne owner I’d definitely say it’s the one to have. I’ve never seen one with a transmission issue before. The other two will spend more time in the shop than on the road
especially the 958 generation, with the v6 and v8 diesels, they will go forever when you look after them
@@CGCTV what about the new one?
had an 06 loved it. transmission seemed a bit clunky but solid car. ive got the 07 hse now and love it. cayenne is way more fun to drive.
Popular misconception about the Range and the X5 transmission - its from people who never owned such vehicles. They are no more or less reliable than any other car. At least the Range and X5 are bespoke chassis unlike the Porsche (which isn't a Porsche) is a VW Toureg that's been hit with the ugly stick.
nah x5 any day

Bro, the used cars in the UK is just amazing. Here in Portugal, for 2000€ I get a thing like a Peugeot 307 from 2004, and a MK1 Cayenne would never cost less than 10.000€
That kind of cayenne in such condition would have cost at least 15k in where I live, that's pretty much why everyone drives a toyota lol.

As someone that owns a Mark 1 Porsche Cayenne (the exact same as the video), it drives beautifully, apart from the electronic problems you will obviously come across after all these years, I've never had gearbox problems like mentioned in the videos, however none of my bonnet or boot hydraulics work 🤣. Aside from that the car is perfect. Highly recommend if you're looking for a cheap cayenne.

I've had mine for a couple months and the only problems it had are the ones it came with but they were very minimal and otherwise its like its brand new excluding mileage ofc.
