Rusty Arbor Press - Restoration
In this video i'm restoring a rusty arbor press.
Ever since I started my channel I had an arbor press on my wish list to restore. Not just because it's an interesting good looking item, mainly because I want to have one in my shop. So I got very excited when my friend called me two weeks ago and told me that he has found one on the steel waste. It's a small Fehlmann arbor press, they're very famous in switzerland for making the best ones.
I choose turquise blue for the main body and painted the letters black and I really like how to colour turned out. Unfortunately the table was missing, so I had to make a new one. I first planed to mill the slots on a CNC milling machine, but I couldn't get access to one in time so I decided to make it manually. It took some time to find a way to make them, took even more time to make them, but the endresult speaks for itself. It turned out absolutely perfect. I went with bluing on the gear part of the handle and sanded the handle itself. The name plate was from the previous seller of this press, it's a well known seller for machines in Switzerland. As the plate was too damaged to use again, I decided to make my own „my mechanics“ plate out of aluminium. It took me three tries to get it to work and I ended up with a very nice and clean plate at the end. I went with a brushed finish for the name plate, as it fits the other finishes very well.
Overall I'm very happy how the press turned out. I really like the contrast of the different colours and finishes and I'm more than happy to finally own an arbor press in my shop. This tool will be very usefull and will for sure appear in future videos.
I hope you like my work and the video.

When he starts using his restored tools to restore his restoring tools, we will have reached peak restoration.
Exactly, better than painting up some old tat just for a video and never seeing it used
lol @ “peak restoration”
Pretty sure that metal shear was a restoration in a previous video
lol
His vice he uses all the time was one of his earliest videos.
The only thing cooler than seeing a My Mechanics restoration is seeing him restore something that will stay in the workshop to be used later! Looking at you, Beverly Shears!
This press will definitely find very good use for future projects.
@@mymechanics So many videos of you punching things out with a hammer. NO MORE!
Why do you file in one direction, like with the big file, and in both directions with the others?
@@angelocurcio9415 probably does it depending on how much the file can remove for better control. If you notice, it is only the small files that he goes both directions with.
@@angelocurcio9415 Generally, files cut in one direction so applying pressure on the return stroke just blunts them. Regards.
When I have anxiety I just binge watch your videos, they makes me calm again. Also obsessed with restoration, thank you!
Thank you so much
As a person crippled by anxiety I hope you get better anxiety is horrible. Enjoy some MM
Meeeeeeeee Toooooo. My anxiety is crazy. These videos calm me down. Also helps that he is the best I've ever seen. A perfectionist, a true artist.
I have to say that I find them very relaxing. And most of the time I don’t even know what the tools do!😜 So glad MM demonstrates the final product. You do a fine job!
I Should have known you were Swiss my Grandfather was and my Great Grandfather came to America a hat maker from Switzerland ! Amazing works

OK, who else was impressed that the previously restored Beverley Shears made an appearance?
And the Gressel vise!
Old Bev is in quite a few vids! She pops up now and then
@@MediocreHexPeddler no. that's a completely new vise he got from gressel. the one he restored is painted green!
yes, but also the oilcan and the airgrinder are used frequently
Great to see that master class restored shearer again😘😘
Probably my 3rd or 4th time seeing this one over the last couple years. Always find myself coming back to your vids. Thanks a million for the absolute perfection you exemplify with these restorations.
Wow, thanks!
Sharp edges: exist My Mechanics: And I took that personally
Literally laughed out loud at this comment. Well done.
In life there are two things I can be sure of 1) I will have to leave this planet at one point 2) Sharp edges and cast marks will be removed. One of the best channel on the Tube though.
Federico Bianco and 3) I make a new one
@@pozersk8er Or I make the old one like new !!

Press? I see what you did there
“There should be a table, it’s missing.” Oh boy here it comes!! “I make a new one” HELL YEAH YOU MAKE A NEW ONE!
I don't know why, but it makes me so happy every time...
I love your comment. I love you. Be happy. The world is beautiful
Had the same feeling there
He should harden the new made table.

From rusty metal...
I've binged almost every episode in the last 3 days & I can honestly say my favorite is when "I make new one" and when he smoothes the rough edges. I feel honored to watch a master at his craft. Thank you sir for the videos. You are the man! I was watching some of the other restoration channels until I found this one. This is by far the best one out there.
Me too, I was watching one last night and it said on the screen something about a piece being ruined and I said out loud to myself, "he makes a new one??" and on the screen it of course popped up "I make a new one" and I cheered more passionately for that than I have for anything in a WHILE
whenever i'm sad i just think of "i make a new one" and it fills me with so much unending joy every time
@@literallyafishhook it's SO GOOD
You need to start selling "I make a new one" T-shirt.
I would buy that! 😀
That's absolutely fantastic idea! Please!!! :)
I'd buy that t-shirt, for sure
So - you want him to make a new one? A lot of new ones ?
I'm in!
He’s SWISS!!! EVERYTHING MAKES SENSE NOW! I knew he was European, almost completely fluent but not native English, and it was driving me crazy trying to deduce his country. I thought maybe Germany because there have been some German tools restored on here but Switzerland makes so much more sense! No wonder he’s so admirably meticulous! Thank you for this channel, I enjoy every upload!
Yes and he alsk comes from the french part of switzerland, maybe Fribourg or Neuchatel
You could have deduced it from the model of his electric outlet. They're only used in Swirzerland. The model with the ground pin aligned in the center. I live in Brazil and we have the same, but the ground pin is offset.

He's the Roger Federer of restoration!
This guy is literally everything I wanted to be in life since childhood. A workshop + metalworking and woodworking skills to make and maintain my stuff. cheers mate.
The fabrication of the qudra-gap base was just fabulous. The label creation, too, was educational.
I’m addicted.. doesn’t matter how simple the tool he makes it into a “work of art “
Oh come on, MM, u didn't show us the broken button on the sand blasting cabinet :D This is outrageous :)
I love how he is allergic to sharp edges. :)
Unless they're supposed to be sharp, at which point you can easily shave with them.
I agree! He was using some pretty small files to smooth out those gears - it’s what makes him great IMHO.
Отработал сегодня 14 часов. На работе проблемы. А смотрю твои видео и мыслями отдыхаю.
"I'll make my own plate." Damn right you will, king. Love these videos!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for your support :-)

A-Men, brother!!!
Same.
" Unfortunately the table was missing, so I had to make a new one." I wonder how unfortunate that was ;) Your English also seems to be improving! I can only imagine the effort you've put into that, good job!

Noooo his current English is what makes these so good.

I am not an engineer but i fi d these videos amazing
The way you mill the table slots to perfectly match up with the drilled holes is just astonishing
Continue to be impressed with your milling skills. Along with your attention to detail. Well done Sir.👍
Pilot: "Dear Passengers ,we lost an Engine" my mechanics : " I make a new one"
He restore the engine hhhh
Makes a new what plain or engine? That is the question
Rhonda Lathbury No, silly, he makes a new hangar in order to restore the plane.
Using only what he’s carrying in a backpack
Hahaha good prank
This guys machining skills are hardly getting the recognition they deserve here. Really nice work.
Even just recentering the piece in the 3 jaw chuck after turning it round to get a concentric cut is a bastard. His work looks flawless every time.
I am thinking more along the lines of tool and die maker, to the 10th degree.
As watching some of the stuff he does, yes he has some good machining skills, but I wouldn't call him a machinist. I don't say that as a bad thing. He is far more like a fabricator. I do like something that I bet most people over look. As a machinist, nothing is worst that trying to machine a weld that someone took an angle grinder to. I think it goes to show that he knew better. He didn't take an angle grinder to it. He straight took it to the lathe. Hybrid machinist and fabricator.
You do mean except for the part where he cuts into his milling machine table . . . . right?
Meh nothing special, grew up around machine shops. Tons of people can do the level of work he does. It’s nothing significantly special. Not that it’s talentless, but nothing ground breaking either.
Never had an idea where this guy lived, but now I know why Swiss makes excellent watches.
You've made more complex restorations, but this one remains my favorite. It's so simple and the end result is beautiful.
Need a new t-shift that just says “I make a new one” Your videos are awesome. That is all.
t-shifts are tight!

Haha, feel the same.
xDDD nice one
I know what gonna happen next: He's gonna throw the whole thing away just to make a new one 🤣🤣
DAN sniper should get like a cheep crappy modern tool and try to make it better than new

I love that not only do you do aesthetically beautiful restore work, you also restore the purpose, rescuing from the scrap heap and putting it back into use to help restore future projects.
As usual, no disappointments, such a well done project, You Sir are an absolute inspiration.
You know you're a true fan of the channel if you recognize some of the tools being used to restore the item as tools that he's restored in previous videos.
Suggestion idk maybe good idea, weighing before and after to see how much material removed? Sounds satisfying to me.
Seconded
Fucking grand idea. Never thought about that. I’d like to know minus the new piece he had to make to see true equivalence
Where did you buy that turquoise?
Just have an after shot of all the loose metal and shaving piled up with the weight.
Absolutely beautiful work, the attention to detail is brilliant. I love watching the craftsmanship, thanks for letting us watch.
A great master of renovation. He is amazing and meticulous on his work. I love watching him.

Good restorer, Brilliant Filmmaker.
Sharp edges: *Exist* My mechanic: We don't do that here
The Restoring knifes: *AM I A JOKE TO YOU?*
Yeah, i kind of dislike that, and unnecessary fillers also.
You don't want sharp edges on the parts you're gonna paint, but othervise, lol!
This channel is about perfect restorations. I understand that some ”good enough” guys think that it`s unnecessary.
@@Your_username_ I just realized my comment could be misunderstood. Sorry for that. I truely admire his work, I'm the same type of guy, but we won't survive without humor.
Excellent! (and we saw the use of the Beverly Shear you restored earlier!)
Thank you
Not to be confused with Beverly Sills, who would sing an aria about My Mechanics making new parts.
I know that there can be questions about over-restoring items, but something going into use, rather than into a museum, makes all that irrelevant. I would have hesitated about taking the markings off the bolt head, that does lose something, but the bolt could easily have been a replacement. It doesn't matter. I did wonder about the new table. What source did you have for the sizing?
This channel inspired me to make my own tools, I’ve started forging and a little machining. I’m no where near as good as this man is, but hopefully one day I will be.
ur insaneee
I lose my mind every time I see "I make new one." Insane talent!

Right !
I really want to know how some kind of sharp edge must have traumatized him as a child.

Ralph Gesler pretty clearly malt of these things were *not* done on the casting originally. It’s not the newly machined edges we’re talking about.
Circumcision...

Ha'ha'ha so quintessential hardcore man
It should definitely be on a t shirt or a sticker or something
favorite part is when you show what it does, these tools are lost in time. your work is as important as it is entertaining. thank you.
An arbor press is lost in time? They aren't hard to find new or old. I think we have at least 3 of then at work.
I've watched this video at least 10x and seeing you decimate those sharp edges and turn rust to dust on the lathe still gets me all excited. Excellent work!
I appreciate the demonstration at the end of your videos of how the machines you restore function.
I can see it now - “The Metropolitan Museum of Art presents this months guest exhibit, “The Arbor Press” by My Mechanics”. Wow, this is a work of art!
MM: Unfortunately the table was missing. Everyone: YESSSSS!
It's so beautiful to see something have its life extended and in such elegance! What a wonderfully resuscitated piece.
I'm not sure what I'm more impressed with: The quality & detail of the restoration or the shear number of machines & equipment he has at his disposal! (Sand Blaster, Washer, Spray Booth, Lathe...)
I never had a clue that was how you would make off-centered round holes.....Awesome!!!
