Iconic French Wonder Lamp - Restoration
In this video i'm restoring an old french Wonder lamp.
My good friend TysyTube Restoration bought this Wonder lamp on a flea market in Paris. He asked me if I want to restore it and obviously I said yes. He already restored two of them himself, I link his videos and channel below. These Wonder lamps are very well known in France, they're used on railroads mostly as far as I know.
I first wanted to paint the inside of the lamp white, but as soon as I saw the amazing look of the sandblasted aluminium I decided to go with that. I just had to remove the casting marks first and then sandblast it again. I choose yellow for the lamp with black letters and black for the handle and the switch. It had a few brass parts that were deformed to keep them in place, which I had to grind away to loosen them. I made all these parts new on the lathe and mill and gave them a nice mirror polish. I deformed them again when reassembling, except for the threads. It was quite a challenge to organize the battery, as they're not produced anymore today. MC-51 rust remover did an amazing job on the very rusty steel parts, a bit of sanding and polishing and they appeared like brand new. Same goes for the plastic parts, I sanded them wet with 400 grit and polished them with car wax.
I really like how this lamp turned out, even that the colours are not original, the yellow goes very nice with the black and polished parts in my opinion. As I mentioned above, I'll keep this lamp for myself for display.
I hope you like my work and the video.

WHAT IF THEY ARE THE SAME GUY?!
I noticed two things about this guy: 1) He doesn't like sharp edges and 2) He just loves to make metal shine.
3) Loves making any new ones.
He even makes the inside of items he restore shine. It doesn’t matter if anyone will ever see the guts.

This guy is so talented I bet he could restore my faith in humanity.
@Homelander Done! 😁
It's not talent. I went back to school to learn exactly this trade. Before I was 30 I walked around in the world not knowing how stuff was made. In school I learned about materials, their strengths and weaknesses, how to approach working on them and learning what materials are good for what kind of stuff. This man has a lot of miles on his meter working in this branche and that is what shows. Talent doesn't exist. Talent is adequately shaped enthusiasm. You can have a preference for what you like but no one is born with the right knowledge and tools. It's all learning and practice.

Perhaps because people here seems to be positively oriented; building, repairing and/or restoring (even customizing) is far more constructive than, i.e., debating politics with ignorants and/or fanatics...
My thoughts echo everyone else's here. In addition, I appreciate the real-time snippets of action, not the fast forward that all the others do. You show exactly how you are restoring the piece without having to see all the actions. Thank you for that. And yes, a huge grin appears on my face when you build up to the statement, "I make a new one". My father handy like you and watching you brings him back to me.

This channel makes me appreciate so many things, not least of which that there was a time when almost everything was made of wood, metal and glass.
Thanks for watching, much appreciated
The way these things look when restored to "as new" gives an insight as to how they might have lasted so long. They're such lovely artefacts that you would want to keep them as clean as possible for as long as possible.
Well back then these were seen as common and not as we all see them today, as these things we want to protect and save
i agree. however. if i were to have done it im not sure i could have resisted upgrading the light and battery lol.
I admire your attention to detail, also your paint finish quality is far superior to most all other restorers I see (in any field, be it tools or car models). I'm sure it never looked this good when new. Keep up the good work Sir...
He's the exact opposite of me. As far as I'm concern if something works I couldn't care less what it looks like and a quick lick of whatever paint I have lying around is good enough if it becomes really necessary. Very relaxing to watch somebody do something I don't have any inclination to do myself. And do it so well.
@@xxxggthyf with you on this! I often wonder what life would be like if every appliance, tool, machine and vehicle was made down to the tightest tolerances, carefully filed, attention paid to the smallest possible details and I always end up thinking that everything would be beautiful and work perfectly, but nobody would have anything because it’d all be so damn expensive 😂 this channel (and clickspring) are great at getting me to spend more time filing, though

Makes me want to go back in time as a railway lineman, finding my way along the tracks with this old lamp. Wonderful.
This will BE good I was right. It really was good
There's something about how My Mechanics restores things that makes them better than other youtubers who do the same thing.
He needs a museum with all of these restored pieces and a picture of what they looked like before!
My Mechanics-the only person I know who can create a work of art out of a hand made screw. ❤
I really like watching new parts take shape.
For months I follow both (TysyTube and My Mechanics). Both are very good but someone has to say it. My Mechanics has a level of detail and unrivaled perfection. I repeat both are very good but seeing a finished work of My Mechanics always gives a feeling that could not be done better, however when watching a video of TysyTube leaves the feeling that they could polish a little more the small details. Congratulations to both and I am a big follower of both, thanks for such good videos.
Hitting the like before watching! Who else?
I love how these turn out to be better than new. Instead of a mass produced lamp, you end up with a hand crafted mass produced lamp. 10/10, awesome finish.

I don’t know how you do it but you are one hell of a Restoration person I have ever seen 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😂 great job on that yellow lamp .
these make me so emotional. like, this poor lamp probably thought everyone had forgotten about them but then this guy comes along and refuses to give up on them because he sees their true value and brings it out of them and the lamp realises that they were always worthy despite being neglected and damaged by the cruel and merciless passing of time and that all they needed was some help ,,, hold on i gotta-
Whenever you “make new ones”, I constantly forget that you show a top down view, not a sideways view, and it messes me up when the parts “fall sideways”
Logan Easley omg me too. Sometimes I’m like “wtf am I looking at???”
My wife asked me if it was a magnet lol.

Question asked several times below: What's the purpose of the plastic part 14:39 that is inserted into the reflector at 17:26? It's a prism reflector that directs part of the light from the bulb to the red lens/window at the back. 16:39 (NC USA)
