I Restored and Upgraded This $2 Junk Original Gameboy - Console Restoration & Repair
I've been wanting to modify the original Nintendo Gameboy so I decided to restore and repair one and do the modifications while I'm at it. The original Gameboy aka DMG-01 was released in North America 31th July 1989, few days shy of 31 years! HTe modification I will add to this console is a backlight and a bivert chip. Bivert chip inverts the colors. For some reason that gives better contrast for the screen, I'll also invert the colors again to get normal colors instead of inverted colors.
The Gameboy got power but there was no image or sound. This was not very promising. Usually no power is better because then the issue is most likely simple to solve beucause that is often caused by bad contact somewhere. This could mean the board or the screen is broken.
After disassembly the plastic parts were cleaned. And yellowed parts were de-yellowed in my solarium. Tutorial for the process can be found here: • How to remove yellowin...
I cleaned the board. I concentrated especially on the power switch and the battery contacts, which were the point I was hoping to have bad contact. I that was not the case I'd have to go systematically go through the whole board to find the damaged area. The battery terminals were removed and put into rust remover. After that they were nickel plated. The blue residue on the terminals is oxidized copper this tells me the nickel plating was already damaged. My tutorial for nickel plating can be found here: • How to make simple DIY...
After the board was cleaned it worked so the issue was just a contact issue which is very typical for these. However the sound was not working. I tested the speaker and the volume wheel. They were both fine. This could again mean the board is somehow damaged causing the issue. Then I realized the headphone jack has a switch that turn the speakers off when the headphones are plugged in. And what do you know. The headphone jack was working. I used a screwdriver to scratch the oxidized metal between two pieces of metal in the switch to get them good contact again. And now also the audio was working.
Now that everything as fixed I wanted to install the mod kit. I peeled off the back polarizer from the screen. I cleaned any glue residues from the screen with isopropyl alcohol. Then I inserted the backlight panel behind the screen. Between the screen and the led panel. Some people like to desolder the whole screen for better access but as you can see the installation can be done without it if you are careful with the ribbon cables. To install the chip I needed to lift 2 legs from the screen connector. The chip is mounted on this PCB board which makes the installation much easier. The rest of the needed contacts (except ground) have holes over the corresponding contacts on the board to make soldering easy. Because the chip inverts the colors the polarizer must be turned 90 degrees I get this white/blue tone instead of the normal green/black. There are other colors also available but I like this one.

This Gameboy has seen better days. Glad it's getting a restoration.

I’m 56 years old and I get super happy to see the Ducktor!
You’re definitely one of my favorite restorators I’ve seen on KZhead. Your videos are so calming while also containing so much character and personality in everything you do. You’re also so extremely descriptive and thorough, so much so that I, as a complete novice to tech, feel I understand how the game boy works a little better by the end. I really adore how much work you really put into your videos. Great job ^_^
My man posted the nicest comment in KZhead history
has he ever restored something that had completely worn out lettering?
And he's legit!
Interesting thing I noticed a few while uploading the video, the Gameboy was released in North America on July 31st 1989. 31 Years ago in a few days! Would you like to see some more mods in the future? I'll try to not ruin the devices in the process
Odd Tinkering yes i would love to see more mods
Where do you get these old, beat-up consoles from? I'm interested in trying to fix up one as a side-project.
Yes that would be cool
If you haven't don't a game gear that would be a good restoration job!
Yes!! More game boys!! Can you do a Gameboy Advance SP sometime? I’d like to see how to restore mine!
I really like the new thing you added to show where the screws go at 2:50! It helps to see precisely where you put the Phillips screws!
Thanks! I thought I'd try something new so people can see the screws but I don't have to show myself unscrewing them all
@@OddTinkering I also came here to say it's a good change
@@OddTinkering Yes i agree Gamer Shoe and Lowlyslayer it's a good change

This man has real skill, and has a good sense of humor.
I like it how he’s so gentle with the machine like he’s performing surgery on the thing...
Machines should not be treated harshly, as like the human body, they can get easily damaged thanks to a rough treatment.
Especially on old plastics, which can be very brittle. Had multiple pieces of a 2000 ML320 Benz break due to this.
Actually he is; it takes a gossamer touch to save such fucked-up game hardware (why the hell people can treat their game unit so terribly, I’ll never know) 😒🤕
@@chrismayer3919 well maybe its not even poor treatment, it is just... really old
@@condeaarondarkusexcubitor3155 I agree.
In a weird way, this is actually satisfying, no talking no music no problem.
Talking can be good (though this video knows how to work without it) but so many videos have music that isn't necessary at all.
Fax I just like how Quiet it is. It’s lowkey calming and just calm to watch him clean something so nasty and making it looks brand new
I'm loving the lack of music/talking in these videos. I watch them to go to sleep 😴😅
Until you inevitably get an ad that screams about something you don’t care about, interrupting the chill vibes :(
I love all the sounds of clicking, stickers being pulled up, plastic being popped apart, scrubbing, screws being driven in, etc. It's not really ASMR but it's enjoyable and oddly calming. IMO music just ruins it; it's distracting, and 99% of the time people just use the same old public domain songs you've already heard a million times.
Man I bought one of these when I was a kid and delivered newspapers. I was so proud. I carried it in a fanny pack with all of my games and spare batteries. Good times! These were dope back then in the 90s. Watching you fix it makes me want one.
They're coming back in style tho. I'm 18 now and I didn't have the luck to live in the Gameboy era. But now I am collecting older consoles like my ps1, ps2 and Gameboy color. It's odd feeling gaming on a CRT monitor in 2022 but you'll never find that charm of 90s consoles with the new stuff. I highly recommend you get yourself a Gameboy or something classic✌🏼 (not saying that I don't like new consoles, the graphics are wild lately. I'm just saying that nowadays most games feel soulless and cash-grabby)
@@NoNeedForLungs ikr i perfectly know the feeling they give! Some Japanese people that lived next to us gave me a game boy Advance from 2001 and lately I've been buying games for it and I wish I could collect more consoles but I guess I'll have to get a job bc rn I'm broke lol
I was 5 years old when the Gameboy came out. Spent hours playing Tetris and Pokemon Yellow.
This video reminded me of my poor game boy that I had left with my mom when I moved out, but the batteries leaked and my mom decided to throw it away. At least my one single left game (Pokémon Yellow lol, part of why I got reminded) I could take with me and test on a friend's gba to see it still works. Anyway, I relate because now I want one to play that game on again too haha
@@NoNeedForLungsright, games back then are one time purchase and its made to be fun
I get some much joy from watching your channel. These gaming consoles like the GameBoy, NES, SNES, etc. meant so much to me as a kid, they were my constant companions. They were always there for us when we needed them, they never judged us or cared about what we looked like or what families we came from. But as we age, they become obsolete, and left to rust and corrode away. You bring them back to life, make them look as good as new, and show them the respect and adoration they deserve. Its like seeing old friends and loved ones coming back for a visit
Can we just talk about how quiet and peaceful this video is...perfection.
ASMR
PIKA!
HELL YE
So funny. I'm watching this while I'm in an audio conference and I made sure my volume is muted. Sounds like I'm not missing anything
That's silly. If you want peace and quiet, turn the computer off. They're headache machines. Go sit in some nature somewhere, get actual peace and quiet, not a second-hand version via video. And get some fresh air into yourself, dammit! People really are living too much online nowadays. And it's messing our brains up, and our relationships. People need to live life first-hand. Even though it's annoying and hard work, where staying in is nice and warm and easy, and you can have the world brought to your couch. The last few decades have seen a terrifying decline in real life, and a surge in virtual, pretend life. And "virtual" doesn't just mean "computer", I mean fake, ersatz, relationships that are "as if" relationships, "as if" it was real, as if they were there in front of you, but they're not, and that makes a difference. Being near people physically makes a difference psychologically. People tend to edit and narrate their life stories differently, to people who weren't there and didn't see it. Anyway... YOU CAN'T DOWNLOAD PEACE AND QUIET!!

Beautiful! I dont know why I find these videos of other people fixing stuff so relaxing, when I have no patience for soldering.
Old electronics: we used 6 commonly available screws to keep the entire case together and it hold up for 30 years and some Japanese boy's sweaty hands. New electronics: we use glue, screws with security heads requiring special tools and crapton of "warranty void" contraptions. You are lucky if your device will work for the entirety of warranty time. Repair? Are you crazy? We will swap the whole thing and worry about recycling later.
Old eletronics: Found in the forest after for 20 years, eletronics still in working order save corrotion of terminals. Can be easily opened and almost every component is switchable. New eletronics: Barely last until the end of warrant. Use screws designed by aliens and almost nothing can be replaced. Apple products are even designed to not be.
To be fair some parts where glued together in this Gameboy, too. But your point is still valid of course...
@@TheGuyFromHawaiiHiGh Yeah, screen that literally has layers that need to be glued together to work properly. Rest was easily accessible. Nowadays almost every phone is glued, you can't even swap battery without going to service center. Ultrabooks are almost not serviceable by users. 90% of laptops has internal batteries, but at least most of them are accessible after unscrewing the case. I'm just pissed that technology is going that route while claiming that those changes are made with users in mind. I would like to be able to at least service my device or take it to the service center that will charge 30% of what the manufacturer wants for whole part exchange instead of for example chip resoldering. Rant over, just needed to scream that into internet's void.
Don't forget "we are also trying to pass laws that will send you to prison if you repair it yourself". Technically if a device has software on it any repair is already a civil violation of the DMCA.
