This is an interview with a girl from MELROSE PLACE... Thank GOD, Norm Macdonald cannot resist giving her the business.

  • She is on record as loving Norm's comments and jokes here, in part because she thought the film was going to be so bad she didn't really want to be there to promote it, and was glad he was there to fill in the gaps of the interview. Out of a 10 million dollar budget, box office was only $180,000 or so. RIP Norm. A giant.

    • +John Rainey I dunno, anyone 5th grade on up could spot the ole "board" - "bored" joke. That's not comic ability, that's a) having the balls and comfort level with Conan to go for it and b) being such a natural comic that he got everyone in such a laughing mood in the first place :) edit: after 7 years of still getting reply notifications on this, I finally reconsidered how I phrased it. Not editing my original wording, since it seemed to get a lot of people riled up and I wouldn't want to try to gaslight you about it. Making Conan/audience laugh with that joke at the right time IS fantastic comic ability, as was my point. What I meant as "not needing much comic ability" was the specific stock joke itself, but it wasn't clear I was referring specifically to that, because OP was also not explicitly referring only to the stock joke. We were both complimenting Norm, but I was trying to highlight how "lol board sounds like bored" wasn't the brilliant part, but his overall mastery of the conversation was, and I did it badly.

      @antourte1@antourte18 жыл бұрын
    • One of my all time favorite comedy moments. The guy in this thread saying "Oh anybody in the 5th grade could've seen that pun coming" is fucking pretentious douche bag. Of course its obvious after you heard it! If it was so obvious and simple Conan the harvard graduate professional comic wouldn't have been so blindsided by the comeback. Not even mentioning the entire room lost it.

  • Following Macdonald's death in 2021, Courtney Thorne-Smith later told Vanity Fair, Every once in a while, I’ll run into Conan and he’ll apologize, and I say, ‘That was one of my favorite moments of my life.’ Teased by Norm Macdonald? Are you kidding? I did The Tonight Show once, and Don Rickles made fun of my father, and my father never stopped talking about it. This is my version of that. I told a story about my father telling a joke at my sister’s wedding, and then Don Rickles just went off on my father being crazy, and it was the high point of my father’s life. That’s how I felt when Norm teased me. It didn’t even occur to me that it could possibly be negative. I was beside myself. I was there to promote Chairman of the Board. I was not thrilled about having to do it, so when Norm took over, I’m like, Oh, thank you, God and Norm Macdonald. It was a blessing. Look - had I thought that Chairman of the Board was my path to an Oscar, I might have been offended. I did not. So it was a joy to be teased about it. Because I didn’t know what I was going to say [on the show]. I was like, Good, Norm, you take over.

The ordinary-looking guy got our and started to fill up the boat, follower by Miss Venezuela, who clearly liked the guy for more than just his looks. It was about 40C and my colleague and I were swinging on spanners and sweating buckets. I caught her eye and quipped, "It's alright for you" referring to how hot we were and how she was gonna spend a nice day out on the river. She looked me up and down and said, "It must suck to be you!" She was kidding and we all laughed. A few seconds passed and I came up with the best retort ever. I should've said, "And so must you!" But I recognised that those few seconds would've seriously devalued the gag due to poor timing and made it seem nasty; so I said nothing but have always remembered the occasion. But instead, they cast him with this ripoff Pauly Shore role five years past expiration.... It's soooo bad. At the very start of the movie when Carrot Top is in the shower he actually does do a gimmick with a heated coil on your forehead to prevent brainfreeze, but other than that, yeah, not even prop comedy, not even comedy.....it's just....it's just a dreadful movie. Maybe a baby would watch it? It's LONG too. If it's two hours long, it feels like it's four. It's as enjoyable as a hospital visit.

    • I like Carrot Top, but yes, his ENTIRE act was props. When you make a movie with a stand up comedian, you somehow base it around their act. To the degree that you know what style and catch they have. They make a show for Jeff Foxworthy and at least the skeleton of it is "You might be a redneck" jokes. Tim Allen's stand up consisted of a lot of "arrgh, arrgh, arrgh, more power man jokes". That was then part of the show that they had other stuff too. And later he was able to show that he was good at other types of comedy and acting too. I love carrot top, but he's shown no other aptitude for other types of comedy, so you can't give him a movie without it. If you're gonna do a movie centered around Carrot Top you'd need to make it entirely centered around him (rather than have a romantic interest) and make it basically a drawn out example of his stand up prop comedy. Some Weird Al type movie have the character be surreal and not like any normal person in a movie. Just any opportunity for him to make jokes about things around him. Even then it's an extreme longshot but it's a better chance.

  • This is perfect. Norm is the funniest man ever, and everyone played their part excellently. Conan's "do something with that you freak" was funny as hell, unknowingly throwing one right down the middle for Norm. One thing I disagree with is people's opinion of Courtney Thorne Smith, which seems to be largely negative. She was a great sport. Her line "it's like 9 and a Half Weeks, but Carrot Top" was actually really funny, and it gets lost in the other brilliance of this moment. Beautiful, good sport, funny line, what else do you want? I bet her handlers or agents were fucking pissed after this, which makes me happy.

    • Well, look at how much you've heard about the films since it's release. they could have just taken the 10 million dollars that they spent on it and thrown it out the window.

  • Rest In Peace, Norm. You are such a wildcard in any interview that it's a comedic gold. You will be terribly missed.
