How to Make Stone Tools in a Survival Situation | Basic Instincts | WIRED

If you're in the wilderness and have nothing, perhaps the most important thing you need is a sharp, durable edge. Humans are among the weakest species on the planet and tools are what help us compensate for that lack of strength. Dr. Bill Schindler, a professor of archeology and anthropology at Washington College, explains how to construct some primitive stone tools that could be useful in a survival situation.

  • I have to admit, I was expecting a bunch of BS, but you did a pretty good job of covering this topic concisely and fairly completely. l would have watched longer. People think stone tools are useless, and most archeologists I've seen even downplay how effective they can be. You are the first one I've seen mention splitting wood, which is one essential component of fire-making kits. Well done, WIRED, well done.

    • The thing is, people don't usually do that. The hiker was probably one of theose people who experienced hysterical strength. (Other examples include parents lifting cars to save children, etc) The sudden burst of adrenaline in response to life-or-death situations can give people super strength or endurance. However, these cases are the Exception. Normal, calm, everyday people cannot lift vehicles or fight wild animals like that, which is why is is not counted among our abilities :)

  • Thank you professor. I remember in sixth grade. Our class learned how to do these things, but I’d forgotten. Then I told my mom that these are the things that I should learn in girls scouting not just selling cookies. Well, she told my scout leader, and then in camp we learned how to make a fire with the bow method. And we learn how to make an arrowhead.

  • It's also neat that when you get into the neolithic, you see less flaked stone tools and more ground ones. If it needs to be really sharp or can be disposable, it's more likely to knapped or flaked, (fine cutting tools, projectile points, etc) but tools that have to last, rely on structural strength, and don't need to be razor sharp (primarily axes, adzes, etc) were often ground into shape. It was far more time consuming that chipping it out, but gave a much sturdier piece of hardware.
