Ashley Goes Gliding

Ashley finally goes for a glider ride. She flew for almost an hour and a half, flying with hawks, doing zero G dives, ridge soaring snow capped mountains, and have an overall great time. After all that fun our bums were sore due to not enough seat padding so it was time to come back and land at Nephi, Utah airport. The glider is a Grob Twin Astir and the lucky pilot to take her was her dad - Bruno. She did great on her first flight and it was so much fun to watch her raw emotions as she experienced flying in a glider for the first time. She did great...other than maybe she could have put her phone away for at least a few moments and look outside. Haha. What a fun father/daughter day to go flying in Utah's amazing mountains. Hope you enjoyed the flight and I look forward to hopefully many more gliding videos this year! Cheers, Bruno - B4

  • What a wonderful video with your daughter Bruno. Brings back memories of when I got my license at 16 back in the late 70’s, and couldn’t wait to take up every member of my family, friends, etc. I was very fortunate to do my soaring back then at Black Forest Gliderport, which sadly closed in the late 80’s. It was an amazing place. I still remember the excitement of introducing those who didn’t know the first thing about gliders to the world of soaring. I think what I enjoyed most was taking friends of mine who had their single-engine ratings up in a sailplane, and then listening to their shock that we didn’t just fall out of the sky and have to land immediately. The two things that always surprised them were the aerodynamic performance, and how close we flew to other sailplanes in thermals. I have to admit that it was pretty satisfying to watch their young pilot cockiness disintegrate when faced with an aircraft they didn’t understand, and that blew their minds. I also enjoyed showing them that rudder pedals are not just footrests. Thank you so much for all of your videos. I haven’t flown in years, and have been living vicariously through the videos, but I am really thinking about getting current again. I miss it terribly.

  • Bruno you're really lucky. I have three children and when I have taken them up in a glider all three have very quickly felt sick. To quote one of them, 'the trouble with gliding is you spend a long time waiting around, then you go up in the glider which could be fun but you immediately feel sick'. When I took my daughter up in a motorglider she said 'I enjoyed it until you switched off the engine'. Flying up that mountain looked wonderful.

But hey, it's far better to be vacuous, facile and narcissistic in the pursuit of likes than to enjoy the actual experience. The overwhelming number of comments here are about her fixation on the phone. It says something about your point of view.

    • @@speedbird8326 I'm pretty sure I got it. But interesting to see how much you can read into her using her phone. Yeah sure, people in her generation (same generation as me btw :)) are using her their phone and social media a lot. Some use it more, some less. When I fly with guests on their first flight, they often have their phone out recording and taking pictures, even if there is a gopro recording. No matter the age... But the thing is that I keep my mouth shut about it unless there is a safety issue with them recording... It's their choice. And just like Ashley, if she wants to record it and share it with her friends immediately, there should be no one telling her otherwise. You say it like she didn't care about the flight. I say she thought it's so cool flying with her dad that she had to share it with her friends...

  • Bruno, if there was one person I'd want to take a ride with, it'd be you. Still in training and flight instructors are very cool folks, but you really have become iconic!

  • Nice Bruno. My dad took me for my first gliding flight (ES 52 Kooaburra) way back when I was a baby in the 60s. I was fortunate enough to take him for his last flight a few years ago and he took the video this time. Hardly anybody sees the video but his final and all his footage much of it 8mm from the 60s and 70s is on my channel.

  • Great to have you back. No experience is an experience any longer unless you point your phone at it! I get that people want to snap a few shots. Fine. But personally I would allow two quick photo sessions, one on the ground and a quick session in the air after which phones should be securely placed in a zipped pocket. They are in the category unsecured "loose objects" that if dropped could jam the controls. At least that would be my excuse......
