  • Many stores like Target now will ask you why you're buying the gift cards. It sounds a bit annoying, but I appreciate it because they're probably stopping a number of scams just by asking.

    @TY-up1xp@TY-up1xp2 жыл бұрын
    • I wish this was true. I'm a Target employee, and yes, we are trained to watch out for these scams, but it's a very tight line we have to walk when asking about scams. Because most people won't believe they're being scammed, and it can take a lot of coaxing on our part about why the guests/victims are buying these cards. They're coached on what to say, like we heard in the video when the scammer said to say it's a wedding present. But (for me at least) there's no better feeling than when we do manage to stop the scams. I've stopped several over the years. I remember one where this poor woman started crying and gave me a hug because I stopped her from buying the cards. She walked into the store, on the phone and I overheard her say "okay I'm at Target now what" and I heard her say gift cards and my mind was like... you are not walking away from me come here. I told her to hang up the phone and asked her what was going on. I remember asking her if she knew this person and she said no. Her phone starts going off and I ask her if I can answer it. I say "hi I'm a target team member and I'm just asking the reason for these gift cards." He responded with "I'm her son" I look at the woman, still on the phone, and I'm like "Ma'am, is this your son?" When she responds no I was like "Have a great day sir" and hung up the phone. One of the best feelings ever. The woman was so thankful. She left that store more informed about these scams.

This poor woman was convinced that if she didn't buy them that she would be in jail by sundown! There was about six employees surrounding her , trying to comfort her, and someone called the police. I was being nosy so I hung around a bit to see what happened. A few minutes later the woman's son arrived and gave her a huge hug and they walked out together. They support their parents and help their siblings get an education. • The thing that scared me the most was when I got a scam call when I was 22. It was about me owing a lot of money, and they said that they were going to send the police to my door if I didn't pay that day. Luckily, I realized it was a scam after many hours of fretting. The shitty thing is, I've never properly recovered to this day. That call was the beginning of my anxiety. What I learned from that experience, is that no matter how knowledgeable and aware you are now, these type of scams can have a lasting touch on your psyche.

  • I'm gonna be honest, as depressing as it is that these scammers do this to people, it's more depressing that the scammers don't bat and eyelid when this "victim" is so miscompliant and obstructive; they're evidently used to interacting with people so old that this kind of adled incoherency is normal to them.

    • Scamming old people for their last dime is nothing new. Dragnet once adapted the investigation a scam where two swindlers masqueraded as bank examiners in need of marked bills to catch an embezzler, targeting elderly pensioners with bad eyesight to avoid recognition. In finally nabbing them, the cops represented by Friday and Gannon actually helped the potential mark--a lifelong fan of detective fiction--cross off something on her bucket list; she had "always wanted to be in on a pinch."
