Adobe has been used in major motion pictures. The Force Awakens was nominated for an Oscar and after effects was used in the film. Not to as used as nuke, it's pretty well used in movies for visual effects!
I'm pretty sure it was also used in Blade Runner 2049.
Yes, it was used to create some graphics, things that you see on screens in the movie, like control panels, HUDs, etc. But not for VFX compositing. But true, I could have formulated that a bit differently in the video.
Really? haven't seen it in VFX once in 10 years. In Motion Design, yes. But that's not VFX.
@@christianbohm6118there is a guy named Andrew Kramer who built his career on creating VFX for both film and television with AE. You haven't heard of him? It's not common anymore, but it used to be everywhere (you might be too young if you're only going back 10 years though).
What difference does it make if I remember video copilot or not? If you want to dream about your SGI workstations and your yahoo account, feel free. I prefer staying up to date with what's relevant.
Hollywood Standard: Nuke and Autodesk KZhead Standard: Adobe and Blender
Don't forget Cinema 4D, i think more youtubers use it than blender. Also there's Element 3D :D
i think blender is the future, it's growing so fast and the new 2.80 version is pure awesome, it just needs few studios to switch and start contributing money to the developement fund & it"ll take over hollywood's standard in few years, i myself switched from maya to blender 2.80 because i don't need to pay thousands of dollars to do the same things and even better i can do them faster now....in the past that might have been true since blender was overlooked by professionals but not anymore.
from a basic user point of view, there is no huge difference between 3ds max, cinema 4d or blender... if there is a huge difference for you, congratulations, you might be someone who can actually use that software for something big
for example, I used autodesk autocad, autodesk eagle, autodesk 3ds max during school... it just makes sense for me to go for their software...
@ Every software is pretty much same thing but with different "bundle" of scripts/tools and ofcourse different UI. Behind the scenes they all probably work the same or atleast in a very similar way. That's also why Houdini is really powerful, you basically work "Behind the scenes" and constantly setup everything how you like instead of using premade tools/scripts.
I have worked at many of the biggest VFX companies in the world for the last 10 years and this is the first VFX “insider” style video I have watched that is spot on. Very accurate about what software we use each day and how our pipeline works. Well done.
Stu Hunter Wow 😮 10 years 😍
It's interesting that C4D never showed anywhere on this list, yet I know of some artists who have used it on high-profile films like Bladerunner 2049 and Ghost in the Shell. Is it really not used anywhere for VFX?
Peter Broomfield when I began in VFX 10 years ago it was much more prominent than now. Definitely still used for some things but not as common as before. Most studios have so many pipeline tools associated with Maya and it is definitely the most widely used solution currently, in my experience.
@@stuhunter Gotchya, good info. I can totally see that. I guess this is specifically for VFX houses with legit production pipelines where workflow is king. With Maya as undisputed king of modeling, and Houdini unmatched in sim and procedural animation, C4D might be an unnecessary middle ground. I can see C4D and Ae being better for small projects created by 1-4 people since the programs are nimble and capable in the right hands. As soon as you start breaking down a larger project though, you need something node-based to put it together. I've tried building projects with multiple animators in Ae. It's not fun. As soon as you have the power of a node-based system for compositing, it makes sense to divide the pipeline tasks into the categories mentioned in the video.
Peter Broomfield exactly. For compositing it is literally 100 % Nuke at every major studio. I use Nuke all day and at home I have the full adobe suite for personal projects (cost reasons of course lol). I love AE but Nuke is much more powerful for high end VFX compositing with large teams. 90 % of VFX artists are on contracts. We move studio often and it is kind of a nomad lifestyle. So studios using standardized software is very efficient to have artists up and running within a few days of hire (Mondays at most studios are usually busy integrating that weeks new hires).
KZhead's little jokes recommending video to blenderers.
MrPaceTv is blender bad?
@@yashsidhu8968 nope, I myself have used blender more than any other software but I am a hobbyist blender has its strengths but for heavy vfx in industry people use other softwares as they are well established and blender has some weaknesses nonetheless it is catching up.
@@MrPaceTv that's quite clear that is has weaknesses because it covers the whole pipeline... But you can do what you want just sometimes not as fast as other programs
@@ArtPomelo but it seems to be heading in right direction, with flip fluids and mantaflow it has pretty solid fluid sim, increased max poly count in 2.8,evee real time renders, motion graphics with animation nodes, mat caps and 2d animation pipeline with grease pencil. As for modeling its workflow may be faster than other softwares for someone who is experienced in the hotkeys.
@@ArtPomelo weaknesses are like accurate caustics (sppm) in cycles, large poly count scenes, procedural effects (houdini).

Here a Blender and After Effects user. Where my boys at?
@HauntedCircuit Absolutely wrong on that part about Nuke. There's a reason why it's thousands of dollars. The node-based compositing and object import system are superior to after effects.

I used all most popular programs and I love doing vfx the most. So I choose houdini. Truly the best 3D program for me. I love the node-based workflow so much. Can see everything and control everything. I love houdini’s procedural workflow. Also I like that it doesn’t have any plugins and doesn’t even need any plugins. Its simply the most advanced 3D software. I like both houdini and nuke. They have same workflow. Nuke is high-end vfx software and houdini is ultra-end vfx software. Combining both together, gives very perfect result in vfx. Fusion is amazing too. Its used a lot in many films. But now over the years, nuke is getting used more. Great video btw. I liked it so much.
Fusion (and Davinci Resolve 15 by extension) is also free! For the most part, at least. It 's a great way to start learning compositing as well.

Blender, while not prevalent in the VFX industry is definitely showing some growth especially in VFX houses working on TV shows and streaming content and also in many movies' pre-production phase. @John Rambo sorry bro, but you're wrong. I use Blender too, but I understand that If you want to be employable, you need to use industry standard shit like 3ds max or maya. For that no need to pirate those shit, just use Autoshit student license and use their shit to learn it and get a job in some studio. If you wanna be an Independent artist and be able to make money from freelancing, for instance, without paying to Autoshit, then Blender is the best way to go.
@@SlayerDUDE1993 Oh yeah, I completely forgot about the student licenses. Honestly, the more software you know how to use, the more hire able you are. If you do freelancing, but decide one day to try to get a job at a studio, then learning industry standard software makes you way more hireable like you said. For instance, I need to learn Maya for rigging, since that is what I want to do. Right now, im a freelance guy, but my goal is to work at a studio. So, I gotta do what I gotta do. Blender is what got me where I am, but I also need to learn other software. Most of the skills transfer over, its the workflow and pipeline that is going to change though. For personal stuff, im probably going to stick with blender, but yeah, Maya is going to be used more at a studio so gotta learn it.

Very well put. I agree with most of your points. However you did not mention Maxon Cineman 4D. I think C4D is a great software package. Been using it for 10-15 years now and when both Arnold, V-Ray and Redshift were released for C4D, it blew the roof out my studio for sure :) Also NextLimits RealFlow is one heck of a system, that is part of my studio since V4 was released back in the days :) Used Realflow/Real Wave along too. Keep it up :)
Informative video... thank you for uploading
Very good explanation !
Those who say blender sucks, it doesn't. It's just that the people are habituated working with industry standards. Trust me, I've gone all through that. When I first used maya after learning blender, the maya ui, hot keys and navigation was so weird and hard. I thought maya sucks. But, now I don't. I suggest to start with blender, and then move to other applications. The knowledge of 3d is easily transferable. BTW, I use all the major applications nonetheless I use blender the most not because it's free but because it's powerful.
As someone that started in C4D who then tried Blender & thought the same thing before ending up in Maya, I can 100% confirm that.
Redshift and Octane are taking far more popularity these days, I would call them a standard for people working in motion graphics. Star Wars Rogue one had some Redshift rendering from outsourced contractors for instance, and that's film.
just to add to my comment, apparently octane doesn't support ACES color space, which would go on to confirm why it is a step behind Redshift in terma of production usage, but Octane is perhaps the beat entry level renderer, I would suggest it as the best way to start learning... Arnold is an industry standard, also vray is not half bat but more archviz in it's primary usershare, so I would actually call the industry now as: Redshift + Arnold whereas Renderman is more Pixar. Finally in the end the process is handles by thousands of specialized cpus and gpus in production, by softwate like deadline
Redshift is used at the mill.
@@justshady Redshift is very likely the most futureproof renderer to learn if you use Cinema4d, they are going to optimize it and likely other companies will fall behind in compatibility on the long run, ofc people will use it in Maya as well but I start seeing why Arnold is going GPU asap....

As a visual effects artist and student, I can confirm the information you have shared is factual including about After Effects. Only small independent studios for movies or TV shows use After Effects in the film industry. I was surprised, however, Autodesk Flame (previously named smoke) did not make the list, but at the same time, some experts have not recommended the program just like a lot do not recommend Hitfilm. I would also not recommend Hitfilm personally because it's unstable with a lot of work around due to limited options.
Used Maya and Mudbox for several years - loved the software. Then one day Autodesk got rid of their perpetual licensing options. Now I’m a Blender supporter! (I’ll give the Blender devs the money I would have otherwise spent on an Autodesk perpetual license.)

The modeling part is very similar on every program, different hot keys and such yeah but in the end you can create the same model in every program. The render engine I understand, renderman is by ages more powerful than cycles and has some more awesome features that I wish cycles would have. You spend about 5k for these programs maybe. So I would really like to discuss about that before I go ahead and spend lots of money for these programs
Love the video also love adobe after effects .. For indies and new beginners the best one
Also Blender. Blender will have many improvements in the upcoming release, in 2.80, contains all these features you mentioned for VFX. Blender is also free. Also Rigid Body Physics and Fluid Simulator will be rewritten and greatly improved in 2.81 or 2.82 release (in the end of 2019).
I would mention that blender hasnt really had many "gamechanging" features in release 2.8... eevee is nice and all but apart from UI improvements, everything 2.8 can do was possible all the way back in 2.70 also i wouldnt count on a rewrite of blenders rigid body / fluid system in 2.81, which i would guess will come in around mid 2020
wiki.blender.org/wiki/Reference/Release_Notes/2.80 in first 2.8 has changed a lot, it is a lot faster for bigger scenes because the viewport is rewritten. Besides that, there is an external branch called Fracture Modifier who implement a perfect destruction system in Blender. Not only that, in Blendermarket, FLIP Fluid plugin that integrates much more realistic fluid simulation is in sale. Have you watched Hardcore Henry movie? All VFX was done in Blender and Fracture Modifier Branch
