The RTX 4090...
there is a lot to say about this card. Both good an bad, I will be going over all of those things in this video. Let me know in the comments, if you would even bother owning a card like this, or would you sell it for something more reasonable?
As always like and sub and let me know what you think!

I max out 1440P now native, will possibly go 4K in the future. I still prefer the 4090 FE to my 7900XTX, but I can see a lot of people using something like a 7800XT and just FSR/be happy at the midrange. Thanks for the video.

  • Techwando : the 12-pin connector has smaller aluminium pins and thus smaller combined surface to transfer current than the 8-pin standarized has since 2006. As well the RTX 4090 has a TGP of 450 Watts when in reality it continuously eats anywhere from 540-580 Watts (=45-50 Amps of current) with max peaks up to 641 Watts. To give you a perspective....my Manli RTX 3080 Ti 12GB ate continuously 390 Watts (=32,5 Amps) with peaks up to 441 Watts. And my Corsair RM850x wasn't able to feed it despite connecting 2 separate PCI-EX cables in 2 x 8-pin on the GPU. I've measured and my PSU can continuously feed a max of 354 Watts through 2 x PCI-EX cables. Whereas my AMD RX 6900 XT, which I've upgraded to from my 3080 Ti, eats continuously around 250-275 Watts with peak up to 294 Watts....while being faster than my RTX 3080 Ti 12GB is every rasterized game today. I've measured them both extensively with current clamps and an osciloscop and then properly calculated the actual PWR consumptions. Nvidia GPU-s 3000 and 4000 series are less efficient and eat more PWR for less/equal performance compared to AMD 6000 and 7000 series. The 12-pin connector is a FLAWED DESIGN and it's Nvidias design and thus Nvidias fault because they should have tested it properly before releasing it into the wild.

I don't think I'm gonna even look at 5080/5090 and skip to the 6000 series at this point in another 3 years which is kinda insane when we look back at the 2 year upgrade cycle a lot of us are on with GPU's. Star Citizen is the only game in the future I'm really looking forward too that's demanding and it runs it fantastic. I just can't see needing an upgrade for many years to come. Yes, the price is high but I'm gonna get more years out of this card vs. all the cards I've owned over the past couple of decades.

  • Out of all the cards I own and have own I love the 4090, it's so powerful but also quite efficient, however that connector is going to be something that will more than likely devalue these cards or make it a headache for every owner. I got my TUF 4090 day one and last week after 18 months of use the connector melted on it. I had to document and show it because it melted on both sides GPU and PSU side. The PSU side got fused and couldnt be unplugged. I work with high and low voltage electricity always plugged mine fully. I think what happens over time and this is probably unavoidable is that due to the high current going through the wires the plug gets warm and cold, warm and cold and the thin pins expand and contract increasing resistance in the connection and heat until it escalates one day. I've heard every theory from user error to plugs being rated only for 20 or 30 plugins per cable. It's just a bad design period. I like the idea of one plug to rule them all but any replacement of an already established proven method should be an improvement. This connector isn't over the standard 8 pin connector. I've abused those connectors plugging and unplugging them so much without any issues ever whereas with this one it's almost a given it will one day fail and now I cant leave my computer to render and walk away. That's a huge side effect imo.

  • I've owned a 4090 TUF OC for a year and your points are spot on. It's a powerful card that the average consumer just doesn't really need. I've had to convince friends to not buy one simply because they just didn't need it. I had to get a replacement as I was having issues with driver crashing and thankfully my RMA experience was fast and great. They sent me a factory new replacement just under a week of diagnosing the issues with my card. During the down time of not having the card I had to use my 3080 ti and it just felt so different, once you get your hands on something like it, it's just hard to get off it.

  • Owning a high end card (7900xtx) for the first time I definitely developed thoughts about GPU maintenance and its longevity ("I invested so much, maybe I should change thermal pads at some point" etc.). The 4090 is in its own league but making such an investment comes with the expectation of having a free of issues, high quality experience in every way and a usage of at least 5 years. The reality is obviously different and I feel like the past 2 gens high end cards are more experiments than established, well tested products. Thats why I went all in and got the nitro+ top of the line model, just to minimize any quality issues..So far its been amazing, but not everyones GPU works well in their system. That said, this is a very nice review! I had to make my own (fairly short) researches and adjustments to make my 7900xtx work without issues (so far) and I hope u can enjoy your 4090 for as long as possible.

    @Greenalex89@Greenalex8918 күн бұрын
    • Appreciate the well written comment. Happy to hear you are having good experiences with the 7900XTX. Lately I hear nothing but good from the owners of that card. As for your concern with thermalpads, honestly if the cooler design is good and they are using decent pads (which you can use a GPU teardown site/video to see) then I'd say leave the pads for a long time and just replace the paste the second your warranty is up. The only time I was personally changing pads often was on the FE 30 series cards, because for some weird reason they decided to use really bad, almost paper like thermalpads.

      @techwandoUS@techwandoUS18 күн бұрын

But since top GPUs seem to stay very cool (UV+OC-ed mine, 50°C , 65 °C hotspot) maybe maintenance is less of a problem, unless temps start rising unreasonably high. Thanks for your insight.

    @OddSpecimen@OddSpecimen18 күн бұрын
    • Thats an excellent question, and honestly a little bit tough to answer, simply because I do not know what the 5090, or 5080 is going to bring. I would say if you're doing video editing professionally and your time is money then of course going out and getting a card as soon as possible would make the most sense. If it's more of a hobby or something that could wait a little... then we are a summer length away from new releases/announcements. All this being said though, the major difference you will see across all modern cards in video editing will be things like timeline scrolling with heavy effects, render times, and a few other things like overall system responsiveness. I used an ARC card for one month, just a A750 with 8GB, and although it did take a bit longer to render, and I sometimes had to pre optimize 4k files for smooth scrolling, it still felt really good. That pretty much gave me my decision to go with the 7900 XTX. This is coming from a guy that has purchased mainly Nvidia cards - 98000 GT Ultimate, gtx 660, gtx 770, gtx 970, 1080 and now on my 1st AMD card - 7900xtx.

Most of these are locked at 450w, which could possibly use about 12kwh a day, at 100% use. Most people are going to game, which won't use 100%, and even then maybe only 8hrs a day (which puts you into a heavy user category. All that being said it's probably going to use 50-360kwh a month. My power here is $0.16/kwh. So $8 to approximately $55 a month. What this math doesn't show is that your current system probably used 90% of that already, so the difference for me was almost $0

Most of this stuff doesn't have anything to do wit YOUR experience and actually using the card. I still believe if you get MSRP (I got 5% under MSRP with MC card) it's WAY better value than the 4080. I know a lot of benchmarks show 20-30% uplift but that was what was available at release. There is 60% more hardware available.

  • Isn't it so sad how back in the day it felt so sick to have something like the 980TI or the 1080TI, and now it just feels gross to own nvidia. :/ I have a very similar feeling, because I was using a 6800 XT paired with an i5-12600k w/32GB DDR4 3800 MHz, but the 6800XT wound up dying (it was a dell/Alienware OEM model I got used online) so I replaced it with an RTX 3080 with a modded AIO cooling solution, so not only does the card look weird as fuck because it has no shroud or backplate (making a custom backplate for it now) and is a super thin PCB slotted into a mobo like some weird expansion card, but I also miss the 6800 XT, and it's glorious 16GB of VRAM and I miss adrenaline as the driver suite w/stupid easy OC/UV features and everything. I also just want to "join the party", which in some ways makes me happy because it suggests that it's becoming cool to run AMD GPUs again so it's a double-edged sword, but I absolutely understand you wanting to "join the party" with a 7800XT or something. It's a shame that AMD just can't keep up when it comes to RT. I'm predominately, to the point where I would say I am almost exclusively a single player gamer, so to be able to keep a framerate of 90 FPS w/RT enabled and maxed out at 1440p MINIMUM is an absolute must for me. The issue is we are all stuck between a rock and a hard place. AMD gives you the 1440p/4k gameplay with maxed out textures, if not maxed out settings entirely, while maintaining a framerate of 60+ but RT performance which is only PASSABLE at 1080p. Nvidia on the other hand gives you phenomenal RT, but barred the 30 series from FG and severely gimps on the VRAM. 12GB on the 4070s? That's just nonsense and spending that kind of money you deserve better. I'm ready to tell RT and nvidia both, to fuck themselves and grab my self a 7900 GRE if I have the cash/chance but ATM the 3080 delivers all the performance I need. Especially because I don't usually play games as soon as they are released, and I have a MAJOR backlog to get through. I just beat RDR2 for the first time recently, and that game's what, five years old? Once I have to start compromising on my texture quality to achieve a playable framerate, the GPU is a doorstop for me. NOTE: DLSS VS FSR should be a non factor because both look like shit at 1080p, and both look phenomenal at 1440p or higher, even if DLSS is SLIGHTLY nicer in terms of image stability and sometimes sharpness, it's not enough to where you should be concerned when buying a new GPU, so I don't consider it when buying a new GPU.

I think the biggest thing for AMD would be to make a gen on gen comparable card, with ray tracing also. There's many rumors of them sitting out this generation, maybe it will give them more time to catch up and have a better design midway through Nvidias 50 series. • Good video man! I really enjoyed it! I have a 4090 and you're correct about everything. No one needs it. But once you have it, it is so hard to go back down. I will say this. There is something nice about knowing there is no where else to go when you're gaming. What I mean is this. I used to always wonder "What am I missing? How much more FPS could I get if I had a 3080 in stead of a 3070? A 3090 instead of a 3080?" The list goes on and on. Eventually, it just becomes a chase. You then reach the top and like Thanos, you rest. Now when I am gaming or video editing, I know that if I can't do something then no one else can either. I hope that makes sense lol. But with that being said, it is a stupid amount of money. If I was not a creator, there is no way I would ever spend my money on a GPU over 1K. Last night I fell asleep with my PC turned on. It stayed on all night, I never do this. This morning my first thought was "Oh no!" and "What if the cable is smoking on the 4090?" Thank God everything is okay. The crypto boom hurt pricing and Nvidia does this yo-yo of what they think they can get on the open market. Nvidia got bailed out by AI, and i anticipate 50-series is going to be moderate improvement over the 4090, since they are planning to use the same chipset. I was gonna get a 4090 FE, when they dropped but of course scalpers made that impossible. They are really not that much difference with a 4080 vs 4090 in gaming, at 4k native i think it was 15-20fps more etc, so really not a big issue even the 16gb ram is not a issue, The most i seen a game use is 12gb vram. I play at 4k native 60 fps vsync and the 4080 can handle that in pretty much every game, I dont use frame generation cause of screen tearing, 60hz tv monitor does not like 100fps, I try not to use dlss if possible. I might consider upgrading to the 5090 if has at least 50%+ native 4k performance over the 4080, If it cant do that no point in upgrading.. Also depends on the plug, I had to make my own right angle 12vpwr psu cable to fit my corsair 2000d case and its a tight fit.. if the 5090 takes 2 12 pin plugs not gonna work I dont have the room.. • Had my TUF 4090 since launch day, had an issue with the connector melting due to a CableMod 90 degree adapter. Thankfully CableMod covered the cost of the connector repair as Asus wouldn't touch it under their warranty. As far as performance goes it's been insanely good, I run a 5120x1440 Odyssey Neo G9 and the 4090 hasn't struggled in any game at all, performance is amazing. Overall I don't regret buying it, but I do hope they remove the 12vhpwr spec for the 50 series and onwards. Great video, liked and subbed 👍

  • Lenovo has had (they go in and out of stock on it; just checked and it was currently in stock when I posted, it was out of stock this morning) the MSI Liquid Suprim X 4090 for $1,749 and discount codes can be applied. For me this brought the price down to $1,525. The liquid cooled card is much smaller (in width it is only up to two slots versus something more like 4 in width). So, those factors together ended up moderating (somewhat) a couple of the drawbacks mentioned in the video (though the price is still very steep).

      @techwandoUS@techwandoUS17 күн бұрын
  • I agree with a lot of this. Even if it never melts while owning it, the thought it still there, something that I never really thought of with my 2080(although the thought of dead vram was there lol) but it never had an issue. Frankly even if the design had zero issues that singlular thought of "is today the day it melts" makes the design 0/10 BS. I feel like the only thing I disagree on is power consumption because I view it like the ability to consume power is not the same as how power efficient something is. 200W is 200W period doesn't matter what is consuming that power. The 4090 is insanely effecient compared to any other card. My 2080 playing bl2 at 4k gets around 150fps average at 250W but I get a locked 240fps and barely consume 200W on the 4090. So for me I actually save power. I think this point comes down to how much you run the 4090 at 100% at that point yes it will be costly. Also 450W models vs 600w models like you said. If you game at lower resolutions on the 4090(which is silly but high refresh isn't) I was getting a locked 240 in borderlands 1 and it was only consuming 89W on the 4090. Good video! One last thing is I totally agree with that statement about the 4090 being overkill for first GPU and not buying the top card if its your first build. I totally think the 80series none TI class is the best if you have the money to just spend and its your first build.

    @D3nsity_@D3nsity_19 күн бұрын
    • Hey man, appreciate the well written comments as always. The power consumption thing... I can actually see what you are getting at. Technically Lovelace is very efficient, I think honestly they didn't even have to push the 4090 to 450w, undervolting sees such a small loss. I guess I am more or less talking about the 600w cards at 4k modern titles, but like anything it's all relative. Totally get your perspective. 89w at 240 is nuts, and great power efficiency. I have noticed that on older games it barely sweats. Been playing a lot of fallout lately with the free dlc. I have decided to cap it at 90 due to the engine. People say above 60 breaks it but honestly 90 seems fine, just runs a tad faster. Anyway, the total PC power consumption is like 280w when I peak over at my PSU. So it does have its great moments, that's for sure.

  • If I build a cutting edge PC with a 7900XTX, that same PC would have cost $700-1000 more with a 4090, which is often held back by every CPU currently available. Over the course of two years (which is how long a 4090 buyer will use it before buying the next top dog), that's $1.96 - $1.37 per day. Plus constantly worrying all the time about whether that 4090 is going to burn down. I tend to think about such things in terms of opportunity cost. So one could argue all I have to to have a 4090 instead of a 7900XTX is give up my morning and afternoon coffees from Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts every day for a year, but I already don't buy those coffees. For me, it's more of a one-time-purchase opportunity cost analysis. For $700-1000, I can build another whole reasonably capable backup PC, take a very nice long weekend excursion, or put new tires on my truck. And since I don't trace rays and don't constantly obsess over FPS (as long as the game plays smoothly), I can play any game at 4K and high to ultra settings with my 7900XTX. So there's zero benefit for me to game with a 4090 over a 7900XTX.

  • I liked listening to your evaluation and case uses of the RTX 4090. I am also one of the privileged people who can afford to buy this card, but to my defense or at the very least explanation of things, me and my wife and kids use PC's in the form of gaminglaptops for well over a decade per set. And we have for the most part been buying these as second or even third hand machines to save money. So when you use an Asus G751JY gaminglatop that came out in 2013, maybe we got it in 2014 or even 2015, I tend to forget those details, but we are now in 2024 and the laptops are still with us and we still play our various games and we are happy. That is a lot of time to actually save up for the next desktop PC clone or gaminglaptop, if you know what I mean ?! Still, it is a form of small decadence that made me decide this year would be the year we wouild get a freshly built (my me) clone desktop PC with perhaps not the best, but very close to the best specifications to our minds at least. So I coupled an Intel i9-13900K with an RTX 4090FE which I managed to obtain directly from Nvidia for the recommended Nvidia price, so all in all the best price I could have gotten for a new product (and even for a used RTX 4090 probably as well...) and I put that on an Asus Maximus Z790 Hero mainboard with 128 Gb (4x32Gb G.Skill DDR5 Trident Z5 RGB 5600MHz CL28), 3x Lexar NM790 4Tb Nvme strips and 2x Western Digital 20 TB Datacenter 7200 sata 3 drives, a Fortron Source Power Hydro Pro Titanium 1000 Watt PSU and a ThermalRight Peerless Assassin CPU cooler with Arctic Silver 5. I'm sorry if this sounds like bragging, that is not my intention at all, but this is just one of many setups, but it is our setup and it just works for us and I have undervolted both the CPU and the GPU and lowered the power limits and frequencies to arrive at approximately 70% of the nominal performance level in order to obtain a solidly running super efficient system that may last people like us again 10 to maybe even 15 years in our household. Does that make any sense yo you ? It may seem strange to get top parts instead of more budget friendly parts if I am running them at so much lower specifications, but I still get a lot of headroom if and when I need it and meanwhile I have all those cuda cores and tensor cores and memory bandwith and a lukewarm PC case while still limiting our energy bill as much as we can. And that was the idea all along. And yes, I have a 90 degree powercable for the RTX 4090 that is of a good design and certainly will not melt under my usage conditions. ;-) I would recommend this approach to more people, but everyone is different ofcourse and some people really cannot get over wanting to change their PC setup every two or three years and that is something we just don't do ourselves. So hence me saying that I can afford to buy me an RTX 4090 FE.

My card is specced at 2550 MHZ but it actually runs at like 2850mhz and at like 60c max, the coolers definitely are overkill and if OEMS wanted they could reduce the size and make the cards a bit cheaper. That loose/weak connection will be the spot where it gets extra hot due to the minimal surface area current has to flow through and that will melt your connector. While I game a lot, I do a huge amount of 3D rendering and other work so while yes, this card was expensive, it's been worth it. But if you're just wanting the best gaming performance, yeah, it's definitely a hard pill to swallow and I'm still bewildered that GPUs are now the price of what a machine used to be. Wish Cablemod's 12vHPWR adapters worked - ran mine without too much issue but then with the snags, of course, stopped using it (RIP to those who cards died). Hopefully Nvidia and other OEMs have learned a lot from this launch. On the size, yeah it's like Nvidia is like "How much space in this hypothetical rectangle can we use for a PCIe card?" "Yes. Use it!". Thankfully I can fit the size in my case but yeah it's a monster. Card does stay suuuuper cool though!
