They do it all the time because there is no realistic way they would gain enough muscles to start recording on time. I know drugs are bad for your body but I think the real issue should be that Affleck had to take steroids based on "Batman has to have big muscles", to fill that stereotype. A stereotype that is stupid since Batman only shows muscles when he is in his costume, so they could do any trick to fake them...

    • I'm not defending Affleck, but there is a reason why some liberals have a knee jerk reaction to defending Muslims. There were many incidents of right wing hate/violence against brown-skinned people after 9/11 There were cases of attacks against people who weren't even muslim, they were just brown-skinned. Because yeah, for some right wingers, there is no distinction between simply being brown-skinned and being a muslim. They don't care, so yeah, when it comes from the right wing, any criticism of Islam could very well be just a placeholder for bigotry. But that wasn't the case with Sam Harris.

    • Liberals and conservatives have much more in common than liberals and leftists. Liberals and conservatives both have the common goal of protecting western civilization and making it a better place (with disagreements on how we get there) leftists are modern day fascists with the sole purpose of squashing debate, eliminating free speech, and destroying western culture entirely. Ben Affleck is a leftist

    • @@VoodooV1 you are defending Affleck. You're making excuses to why leftists have knee jerk reactions and don't bother listening. That's a problem. If a Muslim isn't currently being attacked by anyone, then why are liberals getting upset when someone is telling them they are failing their own ideology? And stats as an excuse for hypersensitivity and mischaracterization of someone's words? But why is it relevant that someone is more likely to be attacked by a white nationalist, if that's true? I think you're demonstrating what Harris is saying.

He would rather suggest the rights we have do not come from God but from the founding fathers so they have no intrinsic value. That way when the socialist liberals like him want to take the rights away there will be less protest since they are only made by men not God.

The reason why people are not burnt at the stake or stoned to death in Europe for blasphemy is because people like Sam Harris centuries ago had the balls to call religion out, and at great cost to themselves. If Ben Affleck was in 16th Century Europe he would be saying "No, if you say burning witches is a bad idea you are a bigot and offending all the people who want to burn witches" Hopefully Arabs in 2400 will be watching this clip and going "Sam Harris was right and Ben Affleck ...wasn't".

Putting him on a panel of truly heavy thinkers seems cruel & borderline comical....on top of his abject inability to listen. • Elizabeth K horribly said. Ben might be an intellectual and he could have great opinions. It’s ludicrous to think he doesn’t deserve to speak because he’s an actor. What a fatuous remark. As for Ben himself, and what he said, he’s a twat. Now that we’ve given him his shot, listened and vomited, we don’t need to hear his opinions again.

    • Liqrit Rs My remark was not fatuous at all. Ben has not done any university or post grad study in anything other than acting. So his opinions on anything else do not come from a learned place and therefor giving him a platform to speak about issues he has no formal qualifications in is unearned and undeserved.

  • It seems to me that what is happening to Sam Harris is rather like what happened to Peter Singer in the 1990s. Singer had been the intellectual founder of the animal rights movement in the 1970s and 1980s and was (and still is) a major thinker in the philosophy of environmentalism and the ethics of global inequality. But he had also argued for the ethics of abortion and euthanasia and in examining the ethics of both of those issues he made the “mistake” of being intellectually honest. He faced up to the fact that it’s very hard to distinguish between an eight month old foetus and a one day old baby and he followed through the logic of that - if it's ethical in some circumstances to abort a foetus at eight month, he argued, there must also be circumstances in which it would be ethical to kill a newborn. He also argued that it might be ethical to kill a newborn, or even a young child, who is “severely disabled” - by which he primarily meant things like anencephaly, where a baby is born with no real cerebral cortex and has no hope of ever being a “person” as such, but he also examined the ethics of euthanising less catastrophically disabled newborns. Of course Singer readily acknowledged that, as a practical matter of policy, birth makes excellent sense as a place to draw the line; and that killing disabled children other than those with anencephaly really only made sense where a society lacks the resources to care for them humanely. But he was nevertheless vilified as a “Nazi” by both the Left and the Right. At one point he was vilified for saying humans have “only” the same rights as animals, ignoring that he was the *original* philosopher for giving animals approximately the same rights as children. It seems now that its Sam’s turn to be vilified for being intellectually honest...
