Lyrics:
Baby, life's what you make it
Can't escape it
Baby, yesterday's favourite
Don't you hate it?
(Everything's all right)
Life's what you make it
(Everything's all right)
Baby, life's what you make it
Don't backdate it
Baby, don't try to shade it
Beauty's naked
(Everything's all right)
Life's what you make it
(Everything's all right)
What you make it
Baby, life's what you make it
Celebrate it, anticipate it
Yesterday's faded, nothing can change it
Life's what you make it
(Everything's all right)
Life's what you make it
(Everything's all right)
Life's what you make it
(Everything's all right)
(Everything's all right)
(Everything's all right)
Make it, make it
(Everything's all right)
Life's what you make it

One of the most criminally underrated bands of the 80's , they were years ahead of everybody else.
Facts!
If only I think we preferred Howard Jones, tears for fears and others who left absolutely nothing. I feel guilty.
What really matters is the feeling of pride they felt when they created a masterpiece such as this. I’m sure they knew it.
Underrated? Not on my watch
Best comment ever
People really don't understand how phenomenal this song truly is and the impact that it still has today. Rest Easy Mark and Thank You Sir.

Loved this song the moment I heard it - The whole album is superb.
Alors tant pis pour eux😂😂, vive la musique !!!veilles 👂 de 52 ans , bonne écoute à tous
Isn't Mark a true genius? I mean, isn't Mark STILL a genius? Genius never dies. People rest in peace, but genius rests in production, right?
I think it is a shame that this song did not go up straight to number one. But over 88.000 thumbs up show that many people do know how phenomenal this song is.
That fucking piano riff and then the guitar. Genius
... and the drums, the bass, the vocals; everything. Genius!
Incredible.
Don't forget the synth and the hammond organ.
So sweet it is man.
Mark Hollis was a genius at putting tunes and lyrics together. There are not many like him. RIP MH.

You're a male my friend and I love Jimi Hendrix so to me he's just a genius. I see your point that maybe colours can listen to their own music like rock has mostly white musicians but some shone in it. For instance Hendrix rock,Ub40 Reggae and Eninem rap if you're good at it show it.
I am 76 years of age and most of you will say I'm an old fart (which is true) but I know my music and Mark Hollis and Talk Talk are special. This track "Life's what you make it" is absolutely class!! RIP Mark. PS Thank all of you for some really nice comments this past year. ❤
The song is true to heart. Life is what you make it.

You could release this today for the first time and it would still sound fresh. It was that far ahead of its time. I don't think the world was fully ready for Mark Hollis back then. That's talent.
It needs to be on a soundtrack for a movie to give it new energy and a new audience. It would be huge.

My mom died this January.. she was only 57 years old. She was a type 1 diabetic since her childhood, didn't quite follow the strict health guidelines that came along with it and often went to clubs, parties, concerts, festivals, on holidays etc,. Made many many friends along the way. She may have lived longer if she had been more reserved, but that wouldn't have made her happy.. She was the biggest music fan, especially 80s music. We played this at her funeral, since this really is her theme song..

Back then, when music had heart, soul and intelligence. Miss you Mark ❤️
The idea that music from the past had more "heart, soul, and intelligence" than music of the present is a common sentiment, but it is also subjective and open to debate. Music, like any art form, is a reflection of the culture and society in which it is created. Different eras and genres of music have different styles, themes, and influences that reflect the social, political, and cultural contexts of their time. While some may argue that music from the past had more emotional depth or intellectual complexity, others may appreciate the diversity and creativity of contemporary music, which incorporates a wider range of influences and perspectives. Ultimately, musical tastes are subjective, and what one person considers "heart, soul, and intelligence" may be different from what another person values in music. What is important is that music continues to evolve and reflect the diversity of human experience and expression.

Me too! It keeps me centered through the chaos and whatever life throws my way.
I had a record shop(remember them) back in the 80s and 90s, and will never forget the week this single was released! I wasn't a fan at this stage, but was certainly aware of them. I was first struck with the artwork, which was so different from the usual band cover shot. Then i played it and was instantly floored by the repetitive piano and gorgeous guitar bursts, not to mention the tumbling cavalcade of drums! It was about a week before i deigned to play the b.side, and that was it!! One beautiful musical epiphany later, and Talk Talk were my new favourite band. We all know the rest with their glorious final two albums, and Mark's spiritual hymn to silence, and then nothing!! Inside, i knew this was the last we would hear from them, but that still didn't prepare me for Mark's passing. How could it? I'd accepted that there would be no more music, but no more Mr Hollis? Simply unspeakable, yet tragically true! So, i once more give thanks to Messrs Hollis, Harris and Webb for showing me what this thing we call music is truly capable of doing to the human soul!! One night I couldn't sleep due to the pain that was such that not even the painkillers were working anymore. Somehow this song appeared to me and it hit hard. It also carried me through the painful physiotherapy sessions and through the months in which I would gradually regain the movements of my arm, and then through the period in which I was searching for a new job, that eventually arrived. After almost one year, I regained 95% of my arm's movement, which is pretty functional despite of the pain that sometimes comes back. The Doctor said I was lucky since the broken bone pieces could have severed some important nerves or even an artery, in which case I probably wouldn't be here now. I'd love to tell my story with a happy ending, saying I am living happily ever after, but that's not how it works. New worries, pains, challenges and problems appear, inevitably. And when it happens I tune to this song and remember that "Life's what you make it", really. And it helps me to remember that in my way, I am a survivor. I survived once. I can survive again. I read in an obituary for Mark Hollis that he always aimed for creating timeless songs. May I tell you, sir, wherever you are, you did it and you touched my life profoundly. And I will always be thankful for that. God Bless you.
An incredible voice and an incredible message . Taken far too soon but leaving a legacy for everyone who truly listened

Thee no.1 band of the 80's in my opinion. Brought me so much joy RIP Mark ❤
Driving your convertible car on a clear summer night, stars above you, a wonderful woman (or your type of partner) on your side and this song blasting on the stereo... there is nothing that can describe how it feels.
The Oregon coast on a warm August night.🌅
Timeless masterpiece, all bits fall into place, it can only happen with the best songs.
absolute the last time I heard a great classic song was about 30 years ago, now we've got ed Sheeran, dua lipstick, ect and all instantly forgettable songs, I read about the court case ed Sheeran had recently, I'm a musician I thought I must have a listen to the multimillionaire ed Sheeran song, what a load of bollocks, disgracefu, I nearly choked on my pie and mash. but I suppose good luck to him, he's come along at the right time and the right place when music is abysmal, lucky eh.
But they recorded so many.🤗
Back in the mid 80s, I lived above Paul, the bass player. He even suggested we jam together because he knew I also played base. Hour after hour, day after day, week after week, I could hear him practing this song. Drove me fucking mad. Then one day it stopped. Releif. That night, I was watching TOTPs this came on. Quite like it now.
Don E Only quite like it!?! Never mind, thanks for admitting you do & your great comments too!
Badgers are my favourite woodland mammal.

R.I.P. Mark Hollis.
One of the great guitar rifts I think🎸 Can you imagine writing this song and leaving it behind as one of your Legacies? Wow…
True !!!
Holy CRAP ! this sheer amazingness of this in 2021! how have I missed this?!!!!
Ok you are not alone. my daughter latched me onto Talk Talk in the 80's I was a Led Zep freak at the time, totally amazed at this track and have never missed a day without listening to it. Heaps of other tracks from various bands over the past 40 years to listen to, but no, Talk Talk means something to me, more than just a track of music, this song makes you really listen to all that you can actually hear on head phones, then you know you are listening to real musicians.
Fantastic track!! Over 35 years old but hasn't aged at all.
The generation of today missed out on some truly great music, glad I bought my two kids up on this stuff ! And they love it
