  • "lens variety or quality" should be a category.

    @vikmanphotography7984@vikmanphotography79843 жыл бұрын
    • "Ecosystem" or even better "native ecosystem" should be a category for sure. A body isn't useful without glass and it's best served by native glass.

      @IanHobday@IanHobday3 жыл бұрын
    • @@IanHobday honestly, some of the non-native Sony glass is better than the native stuff. Same for EF Canon glass. But I mentioned lens variety to include more affordable options because not many people are willing to spend 2k per native mount lens just because that's the only option in a given focal length. Canon's 50mm 1.2 is great but it's not the right choice for most people. They'd be better served by a cheaper, smaller 1.8 or something

      @vikmanphotography7984@vikmanphotography79843 жыл бұрын
    • @@vikmanphotography7984 By "native" I mean using the native protocols, not reverse engineered. Sony licenses their mount and protocols to Tamron and Sigma which is one of the reasons their E mount lenses are so awesome. The new Sigma 85/1.4 DG DN is a great example, I can't wait for them to bring out more DG DN primes!

      @IanHobday@IanHobday3 жыл бұрын
    • @@IanHobday took Sigma a while but they managed to reverse engineer EF protocols really well towards the end. And idk what samyang/rokinon is doing in terms of licensing vs reverse engineering but *everything after their first few AF lenses work great (stay away from the 50 and 35 1.4 lenses)

      @vikmanphotography7984@vikmanphotography79843 жыл бұрын
    • @@vikmanphotography7984 The difference is that Canon and Nikon actively work against the 3rd party makers and try to break compatibility. This is why you see things like Sigma's USB dock and the USB ports in some lens mounts. They have to be able to upgrade firmware to maintain functionality. It's very anti-consumer for Canon and Nikon to behave like this and such a nice change to see Sony doing licensing deals. Samyang/Rokinon and Viltrox make some interesting stuff but the reliability isn't there yet.

  • Did my own side-by-side test for a couple of months late last year when moving from Fuji to FF for professional work. Not with the R5, but incl. the SL2. I choose the Z7II (tested the Z7 though). I’m shooting mostly fashion and (make-up) portraits and in terms of image quality the Z7 was simply the best. The Sony may have a few more mp’s, but the beautiful color reproduction and tonality of the Z7 was key. You can’t test these cameras without knowing which lenses you need. The Nikkor Z glass might not be the most spectacular in terms of fast apertures, but all the lenses I used (incl. the 50 and the 85 f1.8) are fantastic for stills. The Z7 EVF might be only 3.69 mp, I much preferred it over the Sony. Next to an uncluttered view, it gives beautiful natural colors and a crisp and large view esp. for people wearing glasses (like me). Throw in the good ergonomics (you can really see the experience Nikon has) and for me the Z7II was the clear choice and I ordered it along with a few lenses. Now lets hope Nikon delivers a fast 35 and 85 similar to the quality of the GMs (I’m sure they will).

I love Nikon but you're also failing to realise that all the other companies have had time to reverse-engineer Sony's template of success and softwares, while Sony had to do most things from scratch. It would more surprising for brands like Canon and Nikon to not reduce the gap between them and Sony.

    • This is the same for all cameras though. The CIPA ratings are ridiculous and vastly underrate real world usage. I bought a Canon M6 Mk II for street photography and it's rated at about 320 shots, 250 with the EVF. I consistently get closer to 1600 shots and my record shooting birds in flight was 2106 shots. This is on a 1040mAh battery! So all the cameras tend to get much better battery life than the CIPA ratings.

  • As a stills shooter, the 3 things that matter to me are image quality, auto focus and battery life. As noted in this review, my a7rIV is good at all these (although I hope Sony will add an update to match Canon's automatic animal eye focusing). I don't see any big deal about ergonomics on my a7rIV, i just added my desired functions to my favourites menu and rarely need to navigate the menus. Very happy with my Sony but I'm sure all these cameras would be fine. Manufacturers will keep leapfrogging each other making new and better bodies and you can't keep changing systems. Make a choice and just enjoy using it.

    • I’ve used the GFX50S for a while in our studio. Mostly fashion and make-up portraits. After a few months I returned to one of our full-frame systems (the A7RIV and now waiting for my Z7II). While the GFX50 has a very good image quality that is comparable to the A7RIV, it is a very different camera. Compared to these newest full-frame mirrorless cameras, it is quite big, heavy (gripped 5D) and a bit clumsy. The AF is very slow esp. in low light and eye-AF is useless. With a moving subject it often lags behind and focuses on eyelashes or cheekbones instead of pupils. I used it with the 32-64 and the 110 lenses, which are both excellent. The GFX works best in a studio or at location on a tripod and with static setups like portraits, product photos or landscape. In that sense it’s very similar to our Hasselblad H6. As said, in image quality the GFX50 can keep up with the A7RIV, but it is not visibly better unless you print man-sized high. For that you need the GFX100. However for general purpose a full-frame mirrorless camera is definitely more flexible and easier to work with. We now use the GFX50 with an 120 macro lens for our product photography (perfume bottles, lipsticks et cetera). For that it’s perfect...

  • Another thing I'd like to see in the reviews, especially from Jordan's side, is how the camera can be powered externally, and how much longer it will operate with additional external power. Will it only charge the battery with the camera off, or can it "charge" while powered on? With the extended record times and reduced overheating these days, it would be handy to know which cameras will truly make use of an external 28000 mh bank.

  • You should consider lens selection in these. Canon is nice because it has a fairly reliable adapter so you have access to all that legacy glass, but also Sony is more open to playing nice with third party manufacturers, so you can get some nice, new, designed for mirrorless Sigma glass that works amazing on your Sony and is really affordable. That's why I ultimately went with Sony when I traded in my Nikon DSLRs (though I also went with a used a7R iii for like $1800, and still got over 40 megapixels).

Better colors from raw files straight from Lightroom, better image stabilization, more touches like the red blinking “no card” alert, much more visible than Sony. Compared to the competition its always1 1 Stop ahead up to 25600. Nikon and Lumix swap or are even across iso range. Worth knowledgeably is that all cameras lose Several DR stops as you increase iso. That feels like the most subjective measurement in the comparison, but it feels like the folks who thrived on DSLRs don't like the difference. I'd be interested if folks that don't have that legacy preconception of camera "feel" would agree or not. Not sure if that's fodder for a future video or not.
