Good to see others trying to figure this out for themselves, rather than believing everything the media puts out.
Couldn’t have said it better
In the abundance of water, the fool is thirsty.
I watched the whole thing - how does this conflict with current media coverage?
This is hardly an independent outlet lol
No mention of Soros, no mention of Victoria Nuland and the globalists interference.
This course has explained many of the questions I wanted answered when I studied Eastern European history in school. What I've learned from this is that many people still let money and power lead them, we haven't learned from our mistakes and history continues to repeat itself.
Yup.
It's not that people want to be oppressed or unstable situations it's always the rich controlling greedy grap everything. Who really is running things a few . We all would like to feel like owning something but your just a renter in this world. Because the one world government snatchers already think they.
I can't remember learning much about history in school. I do remember watching old jittery black and white films of wars. I have always tried to learn about history on my own because I find it interesting and a valuable lesson to know in life. My great grandparents came from both Russia and Ukraine to the U.S. in the early 1900's fearing their safety in their countries. They had to work extremely hard in the U.S. to live and survive; almost like peasant slaves doing the most awful and dangerous work available to them. They worked hard to advance their quality of life, the way people are supposed to do. Neighbors would help one another to become educated and stronger to grow.
I can assure you Americans knew exactly where Russia was on the map as we lived for years in fear of a nuclear strike from Russia. It was called the Cold War! You seem to know little about America.
Was listening while doing other things. Think I’’ll sit down and take notes this time. Amazing how this has been out here for 6 years already. If we keep listening, studying the peoples, taking notes, we can find paths to peace. I still believe it is possible. But the smartest among us, educators like this one, need to get together fast at a big round table and discuss openly, seeking solutions to present to the UN. It’s time for the world’s real peacemakers to step up now.
😆 the UN just keeps adding more and more flags. What kind of "unity" ? It's impotent to do anything besides host arguments.
Old videos reflect a point of view untainted by current events which can be twisted or cherry-picked to suit one or another agenda. I noticed no mention of the Azov battalions, a strong nationalist militia once independent but later integrated into Ukrainian military and national guard. I'd like to hear more of their origin and history.
Some things are prophetic.
There is always a fight somewhere.
Madam you have also spoken the TRUTH, God Bless you.
Ačiū! Nustebau čia pamatęs žmogų, turintį lietuviškų šaknų! Linkėjimai Jums iš Vilniaus, profesoriau!
Excellent talk! Especially watching it now, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
"I EXIST IN THE CURRENT YEAR"
Thanks to the US and NATO. Why do you need a military block so close to nuclear power?
Today is 3/15/22. A video with a Retired General said he thought the War between Russia and Ukraine's Army would be over in about ten more days from here (as Russia would be soon running out of Fuels for Military and Food for the Soldiers). The World hopes that this war will be over very soon.
@@kurzeful NATO countries have alot of nuclear power and so does Russia
I agree…I’m wondering if Putin wants Alaska back!
Subject matter is excellent. The camera angle changes and walking between them is very distracting from the information that is being given. Bothered this viewer enough to stop at about the 7 or 8 minute mark to make this comment. In my opinion only, I think the presenter should either sit or stand in one spot, give the lecture and show the maps and graphics as you have them. But again, great subject and thanks for the education on the historical context of regional changes and relationships of the peoples of Ukraine, USSR, and other states.
I think that every person who wants to see a breakdown on the dates events and timeline on this terrible situation should watch UKRAINE ON FIRE on KZhead.
"Hidden history is always the key to the truth" - John Pilger.
@ My thoughts. Absolutely correct,,no addition is needed. Thanks to somebody who is able and willing to think.
And subtle hidden propaganda masquerading as academic history is the path to empire! Winston Smith
@@frankbooth1298 There are more than 100 different ethnic and cultural minorities that live inside of the artificial and manmade "construct" that is called "Ukraine". It is complex and far more balkanized than most here can ever fathom. It lacks the homogeneity for the simple "nation state" concept, that is being apllied by ethnic nationalists and neo Nazi's to rebrand it and make it a NATO feifdom. I especially like the "amber waves of grain" reference at the 4.04 minute mark, that was smuggled into the discussion, to plant a hidden reference to "America the Beautiful" into the heads of the American target audience. This is propaganda and it is tailored to specific psychological and cultural profiles and archetypes to make it effective. A study of Cambridge Analytica and their practices can identify the method and perhaps even the author.

I am glad that my wise mother who studied European history steered us away from nationalism and religion ,we grew up without the need of groups ,no hate no divisions
I chose Jesus myself .he taught L♥️ve Nationalism isn't really Biblicle..flags are symbols like football team's..but it is natural to love your home and be proud of your heritage
Of course, mamma didn't teach you that in the history of man, religion leads to civilization itself and if practiced correctly, peace
A self isolating childhood..happy days...
@@jamesb7651 I don’t mean to be disrespectful and I don’t doubt that you (and I) want peace, but what gives you the certainty to determine that if practiced “correctly,” religion leads to peace? Thousands of years of religion haven’t led to peace and certain religions have promoted war and violence.
@@stevekru6518 I think it is more of the small yet significant part of our nature that is not so noble. With or without religion people will find convenient excuses to hide behind and be malicious. Generally, I don’t think the majority of spiritual practices actually outright promote hate and unbridled violence.
Excellent and entertaining lecture...as are all his lectures which are accessible on Wondrium (formerly The Great Courses). Note that this is just one segment of his course called A History of Eastern Europe.
Excellent - thank you for putting these lectures out - very interesting and well presented.
Professor Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, congrats for this excellent lecturer and work! Quite clear spoken English. Thanks. Brasil
When in school decades ago I Aced World studies, History, and Government classes, fascination with the history of nations was always something I've been pretty in tune with, Thanks for this Good 👍 Video
Very informative background on the current situation in Ukraine. Although recorded five years ago, this episode’s conclusion sounds as if it were presented only recently.
Same with John Mearsheimer’s upload 6 years ago. Very relevant today.
Agreed ..... very useful overview of Ukrainian history and important events.
Folks the Ukrainian government has been corrupt for years. This is NOT Russia's own doing. Our western media doesn't show/know the actual reality of this. Its all politics and sides. This is why Russians can't stand us and are laughing at us. Although it is true that Russian media is corrupt and influenced by the state, we here in the US as common people don't know jack about Russia. You have to live there for a considerable time and speak the language to better understand.
@@robmaxwell2 Thanks for the insight. This problem is much deeper than it seems. All these events are problems of our states. I live here and treat both residents of the country's neighbors and Americans equally.
@@robmaxwell2 Very true. Most of the posts here demonstrate that ignorance. This short clip contains some interesting history, but his bias is quite evident. Especially by what he leaves out, or glosses over.
I watched this lecture on KZhead about a month ago. I was impressed by it's excellence! A number of videos on this subject became available, seemingly out of the woodwork, but you won't find any quite on this level.
Thank you, Bob!
Ukraine has evolved into a melting po
Got it! Thanks for this excellent lecture. The heat in Ukraine ...this country is a melting pot. Leave the borders alone and it's leadership should declare neutrality. There is a debt to be paid for all the destruction.
Well done. Thanks for posting this. Good work!
There is no way to provide adequate coverage to The Ukraine in 30 minutes but this guy comes close. His technique is well rehearsed and he comes off well. He speaks more as an actor than a Professor... and that is meant as a compliment.
he talks about ukraine like it's some small western european country. see the problem is that cossacks were also russians and everybody else who lived near ukraine. also he doesn't talk about ghenkis khan who divided ukrainians and russians before the russian empire. also if the russian empire banned ukrainian langauge then how come it still exists?
@@azerty8866 it survived through the rural population, Russian imperial schools russified Ukrainians but Ukraine was an agrarian colony, most Ukrainians could not obtain education

THANKS am also fascinated its a great TRUTH being lectured here.Bravo to the Professor.
Very interesting! Good answers in what might be behind the current problems in this turmoil.
Great presentation and history of Ukraine 🇺🇦 Politicians on either side of the situation should watch this instead of beating their war drums 🥁
Yeah, but for those in the U.S. they'd have to see some $$ deposited for them before they'll even pay attention!!
Thank you for an excellent résumé; I now feel much better informed, concerning the roots of the present international tension.
While studying for my Master's in Geography in later half of the 70s, I took an unforgettable class in Soviet Economic Geography. To this day I remember the fun of wrapping my tongue around many syllabled words, names and locations. My favorite was chernozem soils. My heart goes out to the Ukrainian people. Back then we couldn't conceive that one day "the" Ukraine, a mere province of the indomitable Soviet Union would one day be its own country with the will to defend it own national identity.

Did you invision it as a country destroying its citizens because they wont Ukranianize, or becoming Neonazi hotspot?
A very clear explanation. Thank you so much.
"The prospect (of changing borders) largely became unthinkable ... with the tragic exception of Yugoslavia" (1:35) How interesting! WHY was Yugoslavia an exception? And a tragic one, at that? Too bad Ms. Albright left us just a day ago as I am sure she would have had so much clarity to add to this "exception" clause.
Just found this. Very good explanation of what has happened in the past 3 weeks even though this lecture was 3 years ago. it clarified a lot of background to the current crisis.
The lecture was 5 years ago.
Great speech. You made some good points and covered some information I didn't know.
I can see some people saying 'You speak Russian therefore you ARE Russian'. That HAS to extend to 'you speak English therefore you ARE English' for those people in Africa, China, India, etc.
Thank you for the education & History, now I understand the conflict between 2 countries. I’am for freedom & peace & my hope is to end the Ukrainian-Russian War & give people their Peace. Thanks for sharing .🙏🏽
Chris, as Ukrainian, I would say this video is very good for general understanding, but still, there are some moments I would argue or add details. Anyway, did you know that your family name sounds very Ukrainian. Kozak (Ukr.) = Cossac (Eng.). Could it be that your predisessors are from Ukraine?
From the sound of it, peace is a destination far away from the current location
Well put together. An informing piece that should be seen by as many people as possible.
Superb! The truth (history) matters.
I have found this video to be most interesting and look forward to viewing more by the gentleman who has narrated this one.
Very good lecturer. Thank you.
Absolutely compelling. Explains so much about what is now happening. Thank you, Professor.
Please review the ancient history 2,000 years ago, that this lecture overlooks. This lecturer abbreviated the Kyivan Rus as simply the Rus, implying Moscow preceeded the existence of Kyiv when the reverse is true.
Yes, very helpful
Clearly everything 💯🤏
So easy to understand. Thank you!
So much truth... finally. thank you.
Excellent explanation of events in Eastern Europe, thank you.

I must have missed it. Nikita Khruschev involvement in Kiev, Ukraine, and Crimea. It was he that in 1954 signed Crimea over to Ukraine in 1954. He called some made award to the Ukraine.
At least Khruschev wasn't a monster like this Putin thug!
In pictures I've seen in past ,there had been some very beautiful houses and buildings built, it's a shame so much gets torn down in wars. But of course that's nothing compared to the loss on families and human lives. I think deep down all people wish to have safety and stability and freedoms to make there own choices. I'm praying for peace in all this.yet of nobody wants to be oppressed by anyone.
Yes very excellent Nobody want be oppressed either poor or rich , educated or not educated. I think Putin and it's Russians should allow the Ukranians to choose what they want for themselves. Go away evil Putin and your demonic cohorts.

strange, watching this on March 2022 and the information is still so much relevant
Great video! Gives a clear background to today's conflict.
Excellent lecture, thank you!
Superb. Even more relevant today in 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine. Nothing actually changed from the recording of this video until today.
A rather sobering thought
Oh, but then there came to be Volodymyr Zelenskyy!

I originally watched this course on Wondrium because I have Eastern Europe ancestry. Now I'm watching it in March 2022 with the current conflicts.
Thank you sir for the context.
Thank you for the very informative history lesson, Prof.
I had a class in college titled the history of eastern Europe. On the first day the professor told us to take the book back to the bookstore because it was titled incorrectly. She then said that we would be studying east central Europe. She told us this because the Ural mountains is where Eastern Europe was at.
Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for.
Thank you for this informative review of history.
The commentary was pretty excellent. I really don't need to see the speaker tho. I would have preferred the video full of photos of the regions and cultures being discussed, portraits and art of the people being described, and maps... lots of maps. Maps showing borders and the changes in those borders as the lecture unfolded, showing the movements of these groups, and generally just illustrating what everyone was doing to everyone else. Overall, I did enjoy listening to this. Guess I'm just spoiled by Fall of Civilizations.
Sigh

Very good talk. It makes me feel that the latest fighting is a continuation of history in the region, and not unusual. It resembles ex Yugoslavia.

In my view, this is a very good presentation of the current events. Americans should take note of all the things that can happen here.
God will judge
Invaded by Mexico ?
America has a part in this corrupt history as well... America back orange party President candidate Viktor Yushchenko who's wife worked for the United States as humanitarian assistant secretary. History prove and video shows that America knew that Yushchenko was a follower of Stephan Banderas ideology.. and a person in favor of the wealthy. When protests broke out against him he admitted his allegiance with Stephan Banderas ideology.. it was a Nazi ideology.. with was represented by the red and black flag.. But he ran under the orange flag party... You know Ukraine is a country with rich resources,.. especially wheat 🌾🌾 and great borders for trade... and when a country like that is spilt.. other come in to get a piece of the pie 🥧. . So America media feed us propaganda that they are their to help the situation.. but they are doing the same as the Russian oligarchs did in Ukraine in the 90's. But to achieve this you must put some of your people in to stir up the controversy.. So the person they used was from The country of Georgia .. Mikheil Saakashvili. .. I may have misspelled the name.. but it spelled close to that.. He caused controversy in Georgia and that controversy turn Georgia into a Nato country.. The Rose Revolution. .... now it was more involved beside him . But he was the leader chose by America and President Bush was president at that time.. but it doesn't matter who the president is or was.... Because it continue thru President Obama and Vice President Biden.. Senator John McCain... George Soros play a role.. and many more... He was one of the money men... So you see it wasn't just a Republican or Democrat thing.. But it is about the most powerful men in the United States and the world.. These people are more powerful than our President.. so America used Saakashvili in Georgia.. than protests broke out against him.. He fled to America... And later appears in Ukraine leading protests in Maidan.. The Maidan Uprising.. unlike Georgia .,....Ukraine leader had backed out of joining the EU.. wich prevented Ukraine from joining NATO.. So Saakashvili mission in Ukraine didn't go as it was planned.. But he was rewarded for his efforts... A citizen of Georgia and former President of Georgia.... was made a Governor of Odessa..why???? So .. America will always have a stake in Ukraine 🥧.. This history is long and is about the most powerful people in the world including those most powerful men of the United States.. Gaining control of the World.... Now my research of Europe really as nothing to do with this war... But I have been talking with a few friends about the prophecy of the Bible being fulfilled... And Europe is a part of my Study.. I am far from completion.. but I did get started.. So unfortunately a lot of Ukrainian and Russia will die for the Gain of Most Powerful men greedy desire for The Power that is only held by Almighty God.. But man has a Evil Desire to be equal with God.. This corruption in Ukraine is only a small part of the Evil that is in the Hearts of man...
