10 RAREST Pontiac GTO Muscle Cars Ever Made!

Today, the Pontiac GTO enjoys widespread notoriety in the automotive world. However, it's not well-known that it was, in fact, the first true muscle car. It was created by taking a large displacement V8, and shoehorning it into a mid-sized car body. This combination of a big engine and a small stature made for blistering straight-line speed which, at the time, had never been seen on that scale before at the factory level.
As time went on, the GTO sold well in many different variations. However, there are quite a few unique and rare GTOs out there, sporting rare body, motor, and transmission options. Our list will explore the 10 rarest models of what is arguably Pontiac's most popular muscle car, with the Firebird and Trans Am not far behind.

But because I'm not a drop top fan, in your video, I'll go with the red Hrdtp 72 455 HO, with a stick, and 3.55s, thank you. Would rather a 70 455, that still had compression tho, even tho no round port. My dream GTO? Because I'm older, and would enjoy the ride better, than the "go-fast" ability, give me a maroon heavy 70, with a white interior, hrdtp, 455, but put on a RAIV top end, the 041 cam, back it with an M-22, and a 3.73 12 bolt, and I'll be satisfied. What-da-ya say? Can ya do it? :)

    • Wrong. Studebaker marketed at least 5 MCs from 1956-64 long before Detroit ever thought of doing so. The 63-64 super Lark R2S and R3'S could literally cream any gto up to AND including the ram airs, circa 69-70+. R3 super Lark 0-60 in 5.5-5.9. top end 150+ MPH. Quarter mile in 12.6 @114 MPH. NO gto regardless of year could match those figures. NONE.

  • The Ram Air option was not an intake as the misinformed speaker states. It was a performance option with different heads, cam, carb, exhaust and fresh air intake

    • From early on gtos were available as true hardtop"coupes" As well as pillared coupes.some of those posting weren't even born until decades after the sixties. Some of us were actually driving in that era. Nuff said.

  • I bought the last Pontiac in 2009.A black and silver fully loaded Solstice 5 speed turbo convertible. last one of the month before the closed the factory. Still have it today. Not a powerhouse sportscar, but it's really nice still.

  • What about the older one? I heard Royal Bobcat GTO is among the rarest. A few of them had 421 SD engine and even rarer with 428 HO engine from Grand Prix. But the real deal is of course, the Ram Air V unit, available on 1969 only.

    • If only they produced those RAV cars. Would've been interesting in the stock classes. "Throttle Stop" channel has a RAV 69 T/A. and Judge. Really cool ,stuff. And Ace Wilson wasn't no slug either. Him and the farmer are legendary. Miss the days.

  • This brings back fond memories, In 1985 I bought a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle SS-396 375 HP, It was triple black, black vinyl top, black interior, and black Imron, I had a man who was a drag racer, build the motor, It had a Holley 650-cfm spread bore double pumper, hooker headers, Mallory 50,000 volt coil, BMN 3500 stall converter, Dana 60 posi-trac 4:11-1 rear end, high-flow cam 538/298, medium rise aluminium intake manifold, melling hi-flow oil pump, 8-qt pan, was balanced, but not blueprinted, and put out about 485-Hp.🇺🇸

  • I had a brand new 1964 GTO 2 door coupe with a 4 BBL and a 4 speed. It wasn't available with a Posi rear end, but that was easily remedied with a Police Cruiser rear end with either a 4.11, 3.56, or (with some hunting) 5.12 gears! It was a sweet ride and with carb mods, after market headers, and Cheater Slicks, ran the quarter mile at Long Beach and Pomona in the the mid 13's!

  • Punitive insurance premiums also played a big part in the death of “muscle cars” as anything else. I had a friend that bought a new Cobra Jet Mustang and he admitted to me that his car payments were nearly as much as his insurance premiums. Like paying for two cars!

  • almost bought a red with black interior one owner all original 1964 389 4 speed GTO in 1978 for $800.00. it needed a throwout bearing so I passed and bought a primered 69 Ram Air III GTO Judge for $300.00 with a bad door and quarter panel. looked pretty bad but ran really good. fun times!!

  • I have a 32 option numbers matching '69 that has the same cornering lamps that # has so I was wondering how many had that option. L also have an optional hood tach because it has rally gauges with a clock but, I have never seen those rev warning lights they show on this one.

  • My understanding is the first 'muscle car' was the 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88. Or possibly the 1955 Chrysler 300. It's hard to say.

    • The person who said the 67 GTO had stacked headlights is right. The lead picture is not a 67 GTO. I fell in love with the 64 and owned one and someday I want another. I like the other videos but my heart was set on that 64. It's the first year for the GTO and it was an amazing gold on gold car with all of the GTO trimmings including a 389 tri-power engine. I love that car

  • You didn't note the horsepower ratings went from "gross" in 1970 and prior to "net" in 1971 and beyond. Numbers were down, but the rating had a lot to do with it as well.

  • Stop listing the cubic inch displacement in liters. Displacement was given in cubic inches when these cars were made. The 73 intermediate GM models took a major styling dump compared to previous years. The styling on 73's and following are probably what led to the demise of GM's intermediate cars.

  • Rare does not always mean desireable. I heard 73 455 auto...give me a 4 speed instead. I heard 68 RA 2 auto ..no! Give me a 4 speed. I'll take a 69 RAv4, 4 speed Judge in Carousel Red (234) made in all colors. Also, the Ram Air 4 was a member of the 400hp club as everyone I have ever seen dynoed goes between 420 and 450 hp. The 370 factory rating was a joke.

    • The 64 was still a LeMans with a GTO option package so maybe technically the 65 is the only real one. My dad taught me to drive in his '69 when I was 13 and he passed away 2 years later before I even got my license. I own one today and still think the coke bottle GTO's are the best looking. Mine still moves pretty good being over 50 years old and numbers matching.

It takes talent, something missing from todays sedimentary life styles. Drag racing is the only automobile hobby, using P/Gs. Only because speed isn't the main object to winning, but consistency.

And I can't say I know too many brain surgeons drag racing stick shift cars. And it does take talent to do it well. You just haven't experienced it, and have nothing to compare it to. But I'm happy to hear you have enuff class to own an early FB, 455, with a stick. There is hope. :)
