5 Secret Portal Tricks You Didn't Even Know Existed [Minecraft 1.16.3]
Today I discuss all changes done to portals in the recent versions including significant changes introduced in 1.16.2.
I also present 5 tricks you can do with portals right now, including, rotating AFK player, double hidden room, portal elevator and other.

Wow. That's so different from how portals link on Bedrock. On Bedrock, they write down the coordinates of every portal in the world, put them all on a dart board, and then every time you go through a portal, a blind guy throws a dart and which ever coordinate it lands on is where you end up.
LMAO
Gnembon explains Zedaph's nether portal system and how to improve it.
:D
Lol i was thinking something similar.
I can't figure out how to do this, would you know if there's a tutorial or something about how to do it?
4:00 Saying every number and being not wrong strategy
That's how you win every argument, take every side, and you have to be right at least once.
Indeed
Only Gnembon could make a Top 5 where I have to take notes

Very useful! This comment should have more likes.
thx
yeah im gonna need to watch this like 17 times to get it all
I've seen a few comments suggesting that a piece of string prevented the portal from lighting, however I highly doubt that gnembon would use such a cheap party trick :P
Or an invisible barrier block, but I really doubt that's what happened.
Yeah he showed his cursor so if he did do that then it was block 36 or *maybe* structure void
Also he mentioned, that this trick is specific to recent vesions of minecraft and can't be performed on older ones.
question: what happens when the other side of a portal is completly filled with blocks on the y axis? where would the portal spawn?
@@WhatIsMyPorpoise Good question. I don't know the answer to that; however, portal generation can certainly replace blocks, otherwise the 'other side' portal frames would generate 1 block above the ground, rather than set into the ground as they (almost?) always are.
Now you're thinking with portals.
12:00 approx - Gnembon says "let me show you how this works ..." assuming without interruption; KZhead says, "No, we'll stick an ad break in at the crucial moment utterly ruining the point Gnembon is trying to make ..."

gnembom iz smort persun
I was thinking you would post a video because Xisuma said that he talked to you about the portal mechanism and how it has changed
I don't think it's a nether-side trick, because I don't think the nether is searched or considered until something goes through it @3:40. Three clues I see: portals are now POI, admins need not touch individual portals, there's a chicken walking through the working portal. It's possible that, like update suppression, he loaded a lot of chickens in the area, which an admin could do too. The POI clue may not be important.
As far as I can tell (and I totally may be wrong), the POI is searched for when you go through the portal, not when you ignite it. I'm can't see that that would prevent the ignition
Clues I'd add are that he crouched to place the dispenser, and probably unrelated but there's a frame of a door going somewhere at 24:09
its pretty simple. when i see gnembon upload, i know its going to be high quality and interesting
Same. I don’t even check title anymore. Just know gnembon is a genius.
i agree. id only add "and i know ill understand almost nothing" LOL
Unless it’s a Twitter post
Does anyone else watch gnembon videos instead of going to zoom lessons because the videos provide more intellectual stimulation?
LMAO true
Is there a limit to the number of POI blocks possible in a certain area? That could explain the portal trick at the end.
Don't count only lowest portal blocks when speeding up portal searching in such situation as it might break when top of portal is closer than bottom of another portal. Count only 2 corners in chunk/subchunk as poi. It is easy to find distance between your tp position and whole plane when planes are in cardinal directions. Also even less calculations when there are giant wide portals.
Thinking with portals wait wrong game
At least in minecraft the cake isn't a lie

Did the portal not work because there was already a workstation point of interest where the portal would be created?
setting a poi overrites the poi already in the location

This video has taught me to be even more confused about portals. So I shall stick with my end portals.

essem2Plays the sky indicates otherwise
@@m1lkweed Could be a custom type to have normal sky.
No, because he shows it working later
That wouldn’t change the dimension’s skylight from that of the end.
24:52: it's obviously the chicken ! (xD)
I've done it by accident before, though I have no idea why the portal didn't light
Please tell, I need the potential competitive edge against my opponents.
Is it possible to disable portals by filling in every block on the other side? If the player goes though and cannot move away to go through again or break blocks, then they are completely softlocked. So maybe mojang wanted to prevent this from happening.
You can break blocks while standing in a portal now, so softlocking that way is out.
@@aritude1 but it wasn't before
@@rawpotato7585 ... but it is now and this is about 1.16.3 mechanics I don't understand

@@schalandlar9670 that wouldn’t stop it from lighting that would stop you from going to the nether (probably not even that since it can replace blocks if nessecary but doesn’t most of the time) the nether side only generates after u first step through
This is one of the best explanations of post 1.16.1 portals I have ever found, thank you so much! Another cool trick you can do that is similar to your portal elevator is to make a cyclic network of four nether portals (two in each dimension) such that traveling from the nether portal 1 (NP1) to the overworld transports you down vertically along one length of a rectangle, bringing you to overworld portal 1 (OP1). But when you go back into OP1 it transports you horizontally to nether portal 2 (NP2), and going back into NP2 brings you up to overworld portal 2 (OP2) , and finally going back into OP2 transports you back to NP1 closing the loop. Never in this loop do you need to walk from on portal to another within the same dimension. Here is a diagram: NP1 NP2 To put numbers to it in terms of overworld equivalent coordinates, for example, you could have the down/up side lengths take you down/up (from nether to overworld) say 110 blocks (any amount that is less than 128 and greater than 128/8=16), and the horizontal side lengths take you (from overworld to nether) horizontally up to 16*8=128 blocks (so long as the horizontal side lengths are longer than the vertical ones, but not longer than 128). This works because when you go from nether to overworld, the portal search is centered around your equivalent location in the overoworld. But when you go from overworld to nether, the portal search is centered around your equivalent location in the nether. The key is the fact that your vertical position remains unchanged whereas your position in the horizontal plane gets stretched/compressed by a factor of 8. In other words a sphere of overworld space translates to a skinny/tall spheroid of same height and 1/8 width in the nether. And a sphere of nether space translates to a fat/stretched out spheroid of equal height and 8x width in the overworld. This biases nether-> overworld transport towards vertical-ness and overworld-> nether transport towards horizontalness, IF you are trying to make a cyclic network of portals that involves no walking between portals and no “splitting” of portals where depending where you stand in the portal you get sent to different portals. The connections are “well-defined”, and unidirectional, but since they are connected in a cycle, or loop, the elevator is effectively bidirectional. If you try this, for simplicity, I suggest aligning your portals along one plane of space such as an x-z plane or a y-z plane, and facing all portals in same direction such as north/south. This will never work if constrained to an x-y plane.
Very nice video
There is a distinction between portal lighting and portal linking. A lot of the guesses have to do with invalid portal linking, which can’t be the solution since a new portal is generated when you enter the portal and not when you light it. So the problem rests on what would simply stop a portal from lighting. This means that there are certain conditions that need to be met for a portal to light. However, I can’t, for the life of me figure out what condition isn’t being met. The only random thought I’d that there is something breaking the conditions with the bottom blocks of the portal. Maybe if one of the obsidian blocks is powered? I haven’t tried that in my world; it’s just a guess.
gnembon you saved my entire creation! I was gonna have to move it somewhere else if I couldn't get the portal to work...
ty so much, i have done a lot of reading on how portals work recently to make fancy contraptions like that but some stuff was just unclear, and your video made it clear! Also im guessing for the portal you cant create you used the /gamerule doFireTick false ??? not sure but i would like to know :) also i just made your iron farm 20X in my singleplayer world and its just so op haha
fireTick has absolutely no impact on portals
Fire tick means fire spread not fires function so it wouldn’t have impact on portals unless someone messed with config or mojang made a mistake when debugging/adding features again
awesome video!
Yay my favorite Minecrafter makes another one
24:00 - The game can't find any free space in the nether to spawn the nether side's portal. So the 16x16x256 area in the nether could be filled with blocks.
good guess. but im pretty sure that portals can replace blocks like netherrack or maybe even all blocks. if that was the case this couldnt be the solution. i'd have to check the code to see how that works
@@lordmzte724 I tried it and you are right. If there is no free space the portal will spawn at the exact same spot all the time and remove blocks in its way. Even removes bedrock by the way.
@@basicallyeveryone he likely made a special custom world without a nether since they brought those back or just overloaded something in the game so it didn’t register he made a portal
So I was making a triple intersection wither skeleton farm in which I let the skeletons drop to the bottom of the platform using piglins and scare them into portals using dogs but I was stuck with using a min of 2 portals on each of the two sides but both the portals won't link to the same portal in overworld as the gap between portals was more than 16 blocks(gnembon mentioned the same). Is there any way to overcome this or a trick to force the skeletons to end up in one portal in overworld ?
Portals (or at least dimensions) are editable by datapack (as of 1.16.3). It's possible he straight up removed the nether.
Yeah, and you can also disable the nether completely just using the server.properties file if you're on a server.
Gnembon, i saw your specs on the f3 screen, are you perchance using an Asus gaming laptop?
Why would he, it's not like a geforce GTX graphics card and intel i7 are only available for Asus gaming laptops...

Nice video Gnembom. Do you think you could design a trident farm? There aren't really any good trident farms on the internet
Perimeter in a river biome ad then portal spam It doesn't get more efficient than that
Ilmango's river drowned farm in the sky works just fine. Like all mob farms, drowned farms will suffer in efficiency if you play on a server and anyone else is in the overworld in a location that does not prevent mob spawns. Gnembon will be among the first to tell you that, and in fact has done so in many of his mob farm videos.
these secret rooms accessible with portal tricks is the best
hey gnembon, does the portal poi without portal still works in 1.16.3?
Did you remove the tag off the obsidian blocks? Maybe you modified the dimension config in a data pack?
@gnembon My guess is that there is a world spawn point in that specific position. Or maybe there is a bed respawn point. Both cases should prevent the game to create a portal to avoid auto-teleport on respawn.
there is absolutely no way mojang would have considered that. so its unlikely
I feel like the code for portal linking could be resolved with a compute shader(Using the gpu for the calculation), along with your suggested top block exclusion @gnembon
Is the portal disabled because there already is a POI at that location and there cant be 2 at one place? I dont really play anything past 1.12 so not sure how things work besides small things I've read. Could the POI be left there from update suppression of an old portal at that location?
As far as I'm aware the POI system can't influence whether or not blocks (whether those are also a POI or not) can be created. POI fuckery would cause teleportation/linking issues with portals, but I don't think it can cause this.
Maybe it has to do with the player location, when he came down from the sky he was loading (sub)chunks (based on render distance?)?
Regarding the disabled portal: I'm assuming it's not something simple like placing string inside the frame so I would guess you're doing something with the two underground corner blocks that we can't see.
Corner blocks aren't necessary for portals
i see this kind of videos, and explote my mind
Thank you Thank you Thank you!!! At last, end of building 4-cactus chunkloaders!
The only thing that came to my mind is that , in bedrock edition the old worlds became generated only by 276x276 (kind of) and for that there's no reason to create a nether portal, so they are disabled. If you try to activate one all you going to do is set on fire the obsidian like in the video
I think I'm finally understanding after watching the video about 6 times and taking notes on a fresh tank of food and rest. I'm also now curious if it would be possible taking into consideration that we're working with 3 dimensions to hook a 4-points elevator that takes advantage of the 4 corners of our cubic space and... I've found a new way to make my head hurt. Ougch. After all this I still come back to take more notes after working around the 0coord got me questioning what blocks Exactly the nether 1 is corresponding to. If I'm following correctly without making things easier for myself thru the overlay, then -1=-8 to -1, 0=0 to 7, and 1=8 to 15. Still understandable why none of these examples on their own work around the 0 coord.
maybe there is a barrier block in the top right corner of the portal blocking it or is something complicated about chunkloadings
My guesses for the end trick: 1) he used a resource pack to change the end skybox (nevermind, that wouldn’t affect the skylight of that dimension) 2) some kind of PoI limit per chunk? 3) possibly something to do with height?
i would need see this video 3 thusand times, for undertand any thing, beacouse i speak spanish. and any spanish channel have a video like this. yes, You are a genius
I think you are in a custom dimension for the portal disabling trick based off the overworld
This seems the most likely now that I think of it. I was thinking that he might have changed the nether or something, but yours makes more sense. Especially the biome placement now that you mention it.
He specifically says it's vanilla, so would this be possible to do within the vanilla game?
@@BlizzAz Yes, custom dimensions is vanilla now
@@levertion2220 Right, but is there a setting in there that would allow you to turn off nether portals? I've never messed with those settings myself. Either way, I have a suspicion it's more involved than that.
Or disabled nether in server.properties
Nice man!!
24:00 custom dimensions are a new 1.16 feature
Not sure if that's how you did it (probably not since you said it's a 1.16 feature), but if you put a string in any of the blocks were the nether portal block would spawn in, it makes it impossible for it to spawn.
Thanks
Not a clue but one of my guesses is the other side has a portal its trying to link to but it's full of items that doesn't have a valid connection and can't establish one because the items are blocking it. Items either despawn or connection is made somehow which allows the overworld portal to be lit and connected.
Piston under the ground adds/removes corner block to enable/disable portal?
Corner blocks are not necesary for the portal to work.
@@andrew2853 I was assuming the corner blocks were not obsidian
Maybe trying to create a portal is a way to load the nether. In that moment you can turn off ad on a portal in the nether and this tricks the game.... I haven't tried anything, I'm just guessing :D
I liked the afk player turn-arounder
Maybe it's because the space in the nether where the protal would spwan is already taken up by blocks or somehow else prevents it from connecting it to the nether
Now you're thinking with portals TM
Please make a tutorial for portal witch fram
So lets say im making a guardian farm where the guardians have 2 separate portals that they can go through that will lead to a single portal in the nether relatively far up. Then i want the guardians to drop quite a bit in the nether to take fall damage and then go through another portal which will take them to my afk spot in the overworld so that i can kill them with a single hit. How would i set up such a portal link? Cus when i try to do it my portals just dont link together the way i want them to. The overworld portals the guardians go through first will link up with the bottom nether side portal so they wont fall and take any fall damage, which will also leave them stuck in the nether and will never emerge to the overworld again.
is this the Minecraft PhD channel? I feel stupid, and I play since 10 years. AMAZING content dude, as usual.
To disable portals, is it making allow-nether=false in server.properties?
You can still light up
Hey new idea popped up in my head. What if the entire overworld is covered in water from top 256 block to the botton of the ocean and then what happens if we open nether portal to that water pool in overworld... Can you test that out in like next ep or so? I am really curious. Like what would happen?? @gnembon
@@andrew2853 but water breaks portals
Water flowing into the portal does not. You have to place a water source block inside the portal to break it.
Is the bottom of the dysfunctional portal the top of a functional one?
Both portals should still work, then, afaik...
@@MemeticsX I wasn't sure. Will have to test it at some stage
Did you fill up all the possible places that the nether side of the portal can generate?
Hello gnembon! So in the previous video you told that coming up with ideas is more difficult than implementing them, so i have made a list of ideas that i think will be good in carpet mod so where can i show that to you? Will appreciate if you respond
The ability to prohibit nether portal creation could be huge on competitive survival servers. Why don’t I see more of this? All I get in KZhead are toggle portals, kiddie stuff
I have no idea why the portals dont connect, but I'll guess it's related to the birch room we see in the background
It didn't activate.
with most people, this is clickbait but with Gnembon well...
At 6:58 he touches the portal frame with an ender eye and it creates an overlay boundary in both dimensions. How was that done?
Carpet mod app: overlay
I'm afraid you have to be more specific. I loaded up 'overlay' in carpet mod and touched a portal with an eye, but nothing happened.
@@oblio Yeah sorry, I was basing it off what I saw in the video. I've checked through the github code, and can't even find where the overlay app is hosted. If it doesn't seem to work, and you can get the other overlays working, I'm going to assume it was a quick and dirty scarpet script in order to visualize it for his video. Will likely need to wait for gnembom to respond.
I think you put way too many portals in the nether within the reach of the first portal :)
Doesn't affect activation of portal/.
Is there a new gamerule that can disable portals?
i was not going to click on this youtube video, but then i realised gnembon made it. At that moment, i knew it was the video for me.

Sounds like a good game for pre-drinks
I'm thinking it's either a realisic overworld representation in the end dimension, or a texture pack change to make blocks look like obsidian?
The sky is blue though, so probably not the end
I don't know how he disabled the portal, but it's probably something having to do with chunk loading
yes
Maybe all the possible links in the nether all blocks are like obsidian, this way the game design to not create a portal?
