  • The Department of Transportation really should give shops the power to take photos/videos as proof and submit the details to have these vehicles declared unsafe and removed from the roads until they are repaired.

    • Some of these faults amount to criminal negligence, I mean ignorance is one thing but many vehicles you see in these clips have already been checked over by competent people but the owners declined repairs and carried on driving ! Even if a mechanic hadn't looked at it they should still be aware that their brakes don't work long before they cause an accident. Most cars have lights on the dash indicating excessive brake wear, those lights should either disable the car or be visible from outside the car to let other people know ! They are not just putting themselves and their own families and property at risk, they have a responsibility to all road users to keep their vehicles in a safe condition !

    • I once worked for a shop where policy was that if it wasn't safe and the owner refused repairs, they could have it towed anywhere they wanted (at the owner's expense), minus the inspection decal. If they insisted on driving, there'd be a State DOT official and a cop, just off the property, waiting to pull them over.

    • Such a system would be abused by some places and shift liability to the shops themselves when lawsuits start rolling in. Right now liability lies on the owner and their insurers who is actually responsible for the vehicles. Are things perfect now? Obviously not. These videos are mostly funny but sometimes terrifying considering we share the road. But would they be any better when some shops abuse a mandatory maintenance system and some shops end up getting sued for failing to remove?

  • I mean, I do not know how it works in the US, but many of these cars which the owners want to only repair a part are illegal in my country, and the workshop must call the police to make sure that the car is not driven, or they will be liable for that. Also older cars must pass a yearly inspection so most of these would never pass that.

    @JackDespero@JackDespero Жыл бұрын
    • In some states they don't have safety inspections for vehicles and there are no cross border inspections either so you can drive a car with no brakes, broken steering and rusted chassis right across country and back without any inspections, insurance or worries (if it will make it) and you only have yourself to blame if you crash ! If you have an accident in a state which requires safety inspections you will face serious consequences but they have crooked lawyers for that !

      @ianc4901@ianc49017 ай бұрын
    • For the most part, it's the same here, but corrupt/incompetent politicians have a nasty habit of hamstringing LE and repair shops. Legally, you can't FORCE a customer to pay for repairs that either they can't afford or just don't want to, but passing legislation to prevent a legitimate shop from stopping an obviously dangerous vehicle from being driven is, in and of itself, criminal.

  • When customers come in and they tell you that they only want such and such done it's because they're worried about getting ripped off or having things fixed that don't need fixed .I know because I used to do the same thing. I used to figure out what was wrong with the car first and then I would take it to the shop and tell them exactly what's wrong with it and just to fix that and that's it..... they're just worried about being ripped off. I would do my own minor work on my own cars I couldn't take apart an engine or anything but I could do the little things the only way it made one mistake in one of my cars one time and I learned this if you've got a Mustang with the cold air intake in the wheel well don't try to drive through two feet of water. You can get away with driving through two feet of water if you have a vehicle where your air filter is under the hood but if you have a cold air intake in your wheel well you're going to hydro-lock it

    • Yes, there have been many reports of customers getting overcharged by unscrupulous workshops for unnecessary work in the past and people think all mechanics are the same so they decline all work they think is unnecessary ! It also usually means the customers don't have money to burn so they can't afford to spend thousands on their cars so they are afraid to get any work done and don't realise how dangerous that is ! One of the worst things customers say is 'it was working just fine', which they think means it will always be just fine and there's no reason to do anything ! But they are not mechanics !

      @ianc4901@ianc49017 ай бұрын
    • That's why a periodical safety inspection like we have in Europe is a good thing. You're being told what's wrong with your car by someone who won't fix it.

      @karlavelo2482@karlavelo24827 ай бұрын
    • Some people never drive more than 60km/h, and have rarely been on the highway. So when they drive on the roads full of cracked asphalt and pot holes, loose ball joints and tie rod ends, cracked suspension bushing, faulty bearings make no difference - they don't hear difference, nor feel one, until the wheels fall off. Coolant or oil leak - too expensive to be repaired and unimportant to be bothered, as some can always top it up until they blow head gasket or engine/tranny make a hole in the casing ;) BTW, I like the one with the girls watching their Subaru after it really blew a gasket - hopefully it was a good lesson.

    • I'm gonna guess that English is not your primary language. These issues exist for a wide variety of reasons. Incompetent or corrupt political interference, clueless or miserly vehicle owners, the list goes on and on. In the U.S., a repair shop cannot FORCE a vehicle owner to pay for ANY repairs, no matter how severe the issue may be. However, some states allow the repair facility the leeway to pull the inspection decal and tell the vehicle owner that they can have the vehicle towed to anyplace they like, it's just not common practice, and many states are (seemingly) intentionally "dragging their feet" (metaphorically speaking) on common sense vehicle safety legislation.

    • @@Rotorhead1651 Yes I'm understanding how many people are fixed the troubles in the own cars ! The garage or dealers provide services to fixed all different things or the service can made some owners itself. May central question is independent the knowledge of the owner some times provide a inspection herself or professional. The states require to vehicle inspection according year, miles or model/year! The rules are difference between the states but there are some rules for inspection and time to make it. The costs and price some times don't is interesting for owner and he sale the car or send to recycling. About this rules I'm don't have idea and a lot people in the your professional job it's different an some person with knowledge to fixed the trouble in his car. The American show a long time the idea to fixed itself all problem but according to skills, I would like to understand better the auto repair shops in the USA simple maintenance and complexity repair some people can do it in the owner garage. I have a lot questions. 1- Is it necessary especial a credential or register for fixed some issues in vehicle and give a report to said to say the inspection was made for credential and ability person? Example I'm have knowledge to fixed the issues and provide the regular maintenance my car but the according the states rules I'm can't give this paper because I'm not a registered at the local inspection/ rules ! I'm trying to improve my English during to write. I'm never have class during long time in the English language the grammar and punctuation made some confusion or fault know about it! In the native language Portuguese from Brasil there is a lot different between the Portuguese from Portugal an comparative The USA English between the British English!
