The Predictable Decline of Anthony Martial

Back in 2015, Anthony Martial exploded onto the scene in a way that very few people do.
Hopes were high and it looked like he was next up. However, he very arguably has not improved all that much since he stepped foot in the scene. 27 years old later in the year, is there still time for him to fulfill his clearly massive potential?

    • And then the final slap to the face...signing Ronaldo. Unless he's willing to learn from one of the greatest players to ever play the game, revitalize his game and train like Ronaldo, he'd unfortunately will never hit the heights he was destined to reach - he's in the perfect position if you think about it (if United don't end up and sell him). I was one of the guys that actually started following his career while he was at Monaco. I'm a huge Martial fan, so you can just think how much this hurts. But let's hope Ronaldo stays, as well as Martial - For the sake of Martial of course.

  • I've always liked Anthony Martial, that debut goal against Liverpool made me so happy as a Man U fan. I kept backing him even when he was struggling, but it's clear to me that he has lost his way massively. I don't think he'll be the same player again, one goal for Sevilla last season says it all. He should move to a bottom half Prem club imo, he might redeem something from his career if he does that.

  • I see him as being one of those young talented players in any sport that needed to stay playing. In every sport there is a young player that is viewed highly and gets thrown into the deep end immediately. That player shows they deserved their spot and then for some reason, a team will feel the need to lessen that player's position within the team. This has 2 outcomes. The player looks at it as a challenge and aims to prove they should be chosen....or the players mentals breaks and they start to under perform and get worse and worse. Why does this happen? Its all mentals. Young players aren't mentally strong enough to handle sudden change when they are at the top of their game. It can really hurt them to be doing so good just to end up getting replaced or benched. An example I'll use is Moritz Seder of the Detroit Red Wings. Seder got thrown into the deep end. He over performed to what was expected and won rookie of the year. The Red Wings plan for him to be one of their key stars going forward. But imagine if they start the 2023 season by sending Seder to the AHL, minor leagues basically. That could mentally break Seder and it could make him worse not better. In context for Tony. Man United saw him look amazing, then basically replaced him. Breaking him mentally. Now this isn't to remove all blame from Martial, bc he could've been mature enough to take this as a challenge to perform better when he got chances too. But Man United hindered him. When he first wanted to leave, they should have allowed it. He would have been better off going to Aletico or Barc or even Dortmund. The 2 players who took the 9 position from him...that decision ruined Tony's development. And from there he's immature mentals, his anger towards that has stuck around and he further declines bc of his own mental inability to just work harder and play.

      @MrReese@MrReese Жыл бұрын
    • @@MrReese It would suck. Man United stays having talented players up front but not getting the performances from them we'd expect. We saw a team with Pogba, Sancho, and CR7 finished 6th place in the league. We saw promising futures from Daniel James, Lingard, Rashford, Martial and none of them seem to be developing how we thought, 3 of those players got moved to other teams. Something is wrong at Man United in player development. Something is wrong at Man united to where bringing back folks like CR7, Pogba, Alexi Sanchez and other stars didn't equal success. There is a problem that only Man United seem to be facing rn. Look around Europe...Barcelona's youth players in the main squad all look promising. Man United wants Frenkie from them. Young players with Man City seem to be doing fine. Real has young players succeeding. Teams at the top signing stars...succeeding. Why is Man United struggling with both stars and with young players? They changed managers, nothing changed on the pitch and in player development. This might be a question for @Football Iconic to dive into.

    • @@UTxTheArchangel The managers since Ferguson have been a problem at United almost all the time, even though I think Van Gaal was generally good and Mourinho too. United does not seem to have a system that is played by all of their squads (youth team, reserve, etc.) and they randomly buy players that then do not fit in their ever-changing system. I hope for them that their new coach will bring in some consistency and that they give him the time to actually change something, because Rangnick did not get the time nor the power. The higher ups need to give up their power in order to have success, but so far they did not want to.

  • There are alot of Martial apologists in these comments but hes honestly just not at the level we hoped he would be. In my opinion he falls short of expectations because of his mentality and approach to the game. He wants the ball short everytime/rarely runs in behind, he struggles to hold up the ball with his back to goal, in space he turns down 1v1 dribbling opportunities, and he *always* comes inside on his right foot. Its so predictable for opposing teams that he becomes a passenger up the pitch and a liability in transition. What hurts me the most is he came into United running at every defender and making them look silly now he doesn't even try to run with the ball or get isolated with defenders. It's such a head scratcher.

    @corduroycrook@corduroycrook Жыл бұрын
    • Agree. I feel like he has the talent and ability, but doesn't use it. During the periods where he has played well, he did all of the things you criticize him for very well. He made runs in behind, held the ball up incredibly well etc. I see a lot of similarities between him and rashford right now. Both have ability to be very good, but neither is making it happen

    • Like the guy stated it seems like he is a confidence player. When he started out everyone believed in him and LVG made him his star man. However I didn't get why after that season Mourinho gave him this little of a role. It's not like United performed that year in the league (Their FA Cup and Europa League win saved their season). I think these 2 years robbed him completely of his confidence. Then he started performing after being made the number 9 and then injuries happen, his place is given to Cavani and after that season they buy Ronaldo.

  • You blame Martial for being a flop, but not Raheem when he wasn't playing for any team other than City? It is all about coaching. Or are players just supposed to be magically born with the tactical side as well? Years on the bench with less talented players playing ahead of him. Would score the winner and then get sat back on the bench next game. People say he only plays well when he gets support....AND? You would rather boo your own player than do what a fan is supposed to do for your player. When it comes to Rashford, it's always "Oh he needs more game-time to play his way into form"....And Martial doesn't? I really hope he gets the proper continuous chance to prove himself

    • Your argument would be good if only you also fairly showed that he wasn't first pick for many good reasons. The modern winger has to track back and Martial had one of the worst defensive work rates in the United squad. I remember under Mourinho he was bottom 3 of a squad of 25 in terms of defensive tackles. Our LB was caught out so often because of him. And what can managers do if players aren't willing to buy the philosophy or work rate? Could Mourinho be ANYMORE DIRECT with them about their work rate? Pogba also did jack defensively. People mocked Mourinho for killing creativity, but the same criticism were shared by every single of one Pogba's ex managers, except Deschamps and Conte had star studded teams to cover the cracks.

    • Okay that Sterling comparison doesn't work in any way so I'm just ignoring it. But what I have issues with Martial is how despite how talented he is, there are so many parameters to meet to get that. Confidence, quality players, proper rotation and more, just a get a sliver of his quality. I also don't understand his attitude through the Sevilla loan, when he specifically wanted to leave when Rangnick came. And as for Rashford and him, they are on the same boat for me. Players experiencing a lull in quality that could be replaced this year or the next. I just hope he goes in this season with good morale, because there's no excuse honestly.

  • Would like to see some more unknown players from outside top 5 leagues, as a Rangers FC fan I have 2 that people should know more about. The pundit Ally McCoist stuck with us for most of his career, I know Scottish league isnt top quality but he bagged over 350 goals for us in all competitions and a what if - what if he moved elsewhere? (Remember, it was before England had tv money). He had consecutive +30 goals a season for us in the league which, regardless of league is impressive - he didnt do that once, he done it twice (86/87 & 87/88 and 91/92 & 92/93). Another one that would have been world class imo if he could have sorted his injury issues, Marco Negri - his goal return was incredible for us and could have been better in time. Played less than 300 games, scored over 100 goals.. Doesnt sound that great in terms of world class but, he was averaging a goal every other game -- while battling non-stop injuries. I mean, for us he only played 30 games but scored 32. A long decent career without injuries, say 600 games and he could have had anywhere between 300-400 goals..

  • Unfortunate for him, but just as important as skill and heart are to playing at the highest level, so are consistency and adaptability. If you're only able to produce under specific circumstances ideal to you and even then you're hit or miss, then I'm afraid your days are numbered. If you want to keep suiting up you're either a) killing it so much the team give you your preferred role, or b) you're making yourself useful whichever way the coach employs you. There are too many skilled players out there chomping at the bit to take your spot for anyone to be complacent. It's the just nature of the business.

  • Nice analysis. The defensive stats are very telling. He might do better in a less competitive league where you can get away with one talented luxury player who doesn't press. Or a team of triers and hard workers who need a cutting edge (Brighton?!) But with the choice between Ronaldo and Martial for that role, you have to go for the guy who regularly scores goals, and it ain't AM. Plenty of other talented players who have crashed and burned in this way. Remember Adel Taarabt? Even Wilfried Zaha who struggled at Man U but has played that "special talent" role at Crystal Palace before and after.

And I also feel just because they’re getting paid to play the sport that they love footballers and athletes are people too they have feelings just like all of us and the media criticizing them and telling them how bad they are hurts them mentally and psychologically. • He had all the talent and skill. He was gifted and had all the potential to be a top striker. The thing is he had a stellar first season with MU and all that equaled: more pressure on him + thinking he made it and was a bonafide star + injuries. So you get to where we are now. The English media already were calling him the next Henry and that did no favors to his reported bad attitude and arrogance. It’s a shame but at the same time, he has no one to blame but himself. He’s had loads of opportunities. That said.. he’s still young! Hopefully under ETH he had a sort of renaissance (if he stays). I’m still a fan of his. I will say that.. I always thought he would have flourished and grown more under Wenger. I think he would have stuck with him until he left Arsenal
