How Chelsea Won The 2012 Champions League

2024 ж. 14 Мам.

In 2012, Chelsea were playing the worst football that they had played ever since Roman Abramovich swooped in and bought the club.
Despite this, somehow, they managed to win the most prestigious club competition there is and shock the world while they did it.
Today we look back at how it all happened. The lead up, the main event and the aftermath.

  • Mourinho should be given credit to the foundation he did at clubs. This was the final touch of mourinho's work just like Ancelotti's madrid team that won the CL in 2014 was the final result of mourinho's Fondation from 2010 to 2013 Also the Chelsea team that won the league Under Conte was based on the ideology of Mourinho's PL win 2 years prior.

    • Yeah Mourinho instills the discipline and the winning mentality within the squads he goes to, that's why even though they may not get success straight away, they eventually get it a few years later. The Madrid and Chelsea examples are brilliant because the season after Mourinho left in both instances they were in the CL final.

    • In Madrids case, Mourinho struggled a lot with german sides during his time there, Ancelotti changed the mentality i'd say and they consistently beat german sides after that, though Mourinho built the team.

  • Well CFC on our badge stand for Crisis FC. Man seeing that drogba header still giving me massive goosebumps. This group of player was nearing their end of the cycle for Chelsea, and come close so many times, yet they choose the most dramatic way to find their closure. The likes of Drogba, Cech, Terry, Lampard, Cole, and Feirerra was on class of their own in terms of Chelsea legends in my opinion.

    • It's hard to explain the depth of feeling everyone involved with the club had for him in those brief few months. He became a hero, was adored by all. As well as Ancelotti did, he's the big 'what if' from that era. I wonder if there's moments when he looks at the engraved watch the players bought him & thinks to himself did I make a mistake? Cos his career withered away immediately after this, we could've been that last swansong job that really cemented his legacy as the great manager he undoubtedly was.

  • "Contrary to poular belief, Chelsea WERE a solid team", from the starters, THANK YOU. I don't mind talks of how Abramovich's money basically made Chelsea a top European team 'cause... well, true, but I draw the line at saying they were some sort of abysmal permanently bottom -of-the-league club. Those sort of comments just piss me off.

  • Far from it, Chelsea finished 3rd in their group on 10 points, level with Shaktar Doneskt. They had a +6 goal difference compared to Shaktar's +4. The only reason why Chelsea didn't progress to the next round is because of the superior head-to-jead record for Shaktar (as they scored more away goals against Chelsea in the group stages). This meant that Chelsea had to drop down to the Europa League since they finished 3rd and they went on to win the whole thing being defeated only once in 9 games en route to beating Benfica in the 2013 final of the Europa League.

I wore it to school after the final. I adored that kit because pf all the kits, the one my mother could afford was the UCL winning kit. I watched this match all the way through, with anxiety when i had to go home from my grandma's house and not knowing how the match was gping in those 15 minutes. • The final was brutal. Bayern completely dominated them the entire game. Bayern was probably the most unlucky team during the last ~12 years in the champions league. Yes they won 2 titles, but considering how often they completely crushed top tier teams with 6-8 goals in a single game and often getting knocked out while being the better team was brutal to watch.

  • I will say, while back then I was happy Bayern lost, I still consider this Chelsea team the worst and for the way the played, the most undeserving champions league winners. I understand that, overall the years, this was deserved for them. In that year they didn't deserve it. But who am I to give criticism to the winners.

  • At 13:00, Gary Cahill played with David Luiz at CB(Terry got red carded against Barcelona) and Lampard was the captain(I'm sure that the captain order was Terry, Lampard and Drogba in that period)

  • Since Abramovich's takeover, Chelsea have more (I might be wrong on this, but at the very least almost the same number of) UCL semi qualifications than even Real Madrid who have won it multiple times and been a very dominant force... they had been favorites for pretty much every year in the mid-late 2000s but falter time and time. 2012 was probably the last year that they could have won it for the defining generation, since Drogba left the club after that, and other top players were already past their prime... Chelsea during the 2000s was what Barca and Real were for 2010s... what a team that was... only fair that they now have 2 UCLs to their name
