Drop your two cents on this debate in the comments! P.S. little error on my part, the Jimny gained 110kg going from 3 to 5-door, not ~200
May be Arun was in the car when you weighed it :P
Pricing is something they missed
If I were not broke right now, I'd definitely go for Jimmy. I believe it will be more frugal and less service cost and overall easier to maintain. Also I'm a believer of Maruti Suzuki petrol engine. Our 2005 zen still runs five without any engine overhaul. So, I'm going to drive my polo until this new kid comes up in pre owned market with some discount.
I hv booked Top AT Model Jimney. Why? Thar is deficient to Jimney in the following factual aspects... Power Ratio per Kg ref. Weight to Bhp... Drive dynamics ,poor unacceptable quality of drive dynamics handling, deficient Brake specially During emergency braking, unacceptable body roll, old design military tech, fuel deficient.Thar body is wider.... In the hills, an efficient frugal body shape rectangle is better.... Don't believe me... Watch nxt 3 months compare the two on off road... Jimney is simple tech, simple design, simple engine, simple cost of ownership, optimum weight, 4 passengers. Excellent on road, off road, no roads
Absolutely love your reviews. Do you perhaps know if the Thar will be coming to South Africa?
Have had the pleasure to own 5 Gypsy's over the years, which had 5 or 8 seats. Waiting and Ageing till the Jimny was finally launched in India, then waited another six [6] months after booking, one of the 1st, we were anxiously waiting for the prices. The 7 June price revel left us in shock, to say the least. For a four [4] seat vehicle, but in reality fit for two ;), it is Highly Overpriced by about 2.5 to 3 Lacs, the prices were VERY DISAPPOINTING and Maruti will CRASH its booking numbers. Comparing the Jimny with the Thar is like Oranges to Apples, so we won't go there. Where Maruti had the opportunity to have a swarm of little Jimny's running around India, if the pricing was correct. Instead they chose to price it so high that the basic ON ROAD cost for the Zeta MT is going to be about 15.10 to 15.40 Lacs, with the Alpha AT at about 17.50 to 17.80 Lacs, this with an K15-B Engine, NOT the K15-C + many other shortcomings. Come on Maruti, How & Why the EXORBITANT PRICING? Still can't get over the SHOCK 🤔
.. 4 speed with the decades old k series engine. And it doesn’t even have adjustable steering. Oh and at 15 plus lakh ex showroom or 18 lakh on road.. that jimny is very playing into mahindras hand. DoA
useless pOV I m not dropping a premium for a 1.5 NA engine which is driving the ertiga as well as a xl6 and the brezza !!! But full marks for opening up this segment to petrol consumers who wish to off-road with a smile every consecutive month end!!! NOTE : Pricing Sucks😢
Nice video guys .waiting for a off road comapro between the 2.
I would prefer Jimny over That anyday for uncountable reasons, too bad 3 door isn't available for Indians. Also if 3 door 4*4 thar is twice the weight of Jimny imagine the 5 door thar😂😂 you'd literally be driving a piece of heavy iron which will have even more disadvantage than 3 door thar is to jimny now
So when's Maruti introducing a 4x2 Jimny? A lot of us, myself included, love the Jimny for its appearance. I personally don't really need the 4x4 capability since I won't be using it much. The car offers adequate rear space, a usable boot, smooth ride, and satisfactory safety features, which is exactly what I'm looking for. Maruti's peace-of-mind ownership is an added bonus.
It will flop in 4X2 You can get Bolero its much larger, massive, more heavy, Better Power,And you can make it G wagon in cheap price while in Jimmy you will have to pay more than 20 Lakhs
Go and buy fronx kid
If someone wants a Rwd practical car for rough terrain and dont essentially need 4x4 They can just go with the BOLERO right? So I am finding it hard to find what buyers will get to jimny the only that come to mind are off road lovers who want some practicality, every other type of buyer has other more compelling options
Valid point, but a top-spec Bolero is about ₹13 lakh on road vs a Jimny Zeta that’s about ₹15 lakh. ₹2 lakh more for 4x4, better driving manners and more features. Perhaps not a leap that’d be deemed necessary but a ~ ₹4000 increase in EMI is something worth considering. That being said, both cars in question are certainly charging a premium price for what’s on offer.
@@zigwheels bolero is bigger and more practical.
if they had launched a 3 door jimny , I would buy it right away
However the overall sales in India will probably decline to less than half the current
Once the monsoon mania hits the automotive press and the NKYB Jimny is pitted against all 4x4 in the country, the truth will out. Everything else is speculation. Overseas, the OG Jimny has managed to humble vehicles way more potent than the Thar or Gurkha or what have you in India. The 5 door just might pay a penalty for its extended wheelbase, but my coin is on this tiddlywinks 4x4 punching way above its weight when the time comes. One needn’t look further than 10 year old Gypsy’s for evidence of that upset. And the Jimny is more powerful and with lot more advancements than the Gypsy. So yes, if brawn isn’t the only criteria to influence the buying decision, I’d say the Jimny is the better car for the purpose of its existence. The Thar is a beast. No two ways about it. But the Jimny’s just smarter, by design.
Yes can you try suspension upgrades that makes it nicer on the highway
Jimmy is perfect for narrow hilly roads. Its light weight works in its favour.
But not at this price.
@@infinitebeing1119 you don't buy then
Which will be more practical comfortable between Ignis and Jimny for highways
Maruti should have been bold & launched the 3 door as well. Keep production numbers low vs 4 door & give the buyers choice.
The market for that suv is pretty low.
@@md8uniya684 That is why I said keep production low vs 4 door for Indian market. People buy a 3 door Thar and that isn't exactly palatial inside, so the argument that 3 door will not sell does not hold water. We all got the Jimny bug by watching the vids about the 3 door. The 3 door looks so much cooler than the 5 door plus it would have been 200 odd kg lighter and performance on & off road would have been better.
@@KirkLazurus reality is only enthusiastic guys will buy 3 doors. Currently I own a 2014 thar crdi 4*4 it's doing pretty good on extreme off road, but if I buy a new thar or jimny i won't take it to the place where I'm taking my current thar, The reason is if it's a soft top it will tear 100% and the hard top is going to get deep scratches, 5 door types will be hard to turn on that road, the wider the tyre it will tear or it will damage the rims. Now many guys are buying Thar just to look cool and do some stunts in muddy or gravel roads. In this POV I think maruti is 💯 correct.
@@md8uniya684 now with this pricing many non enthusiast are canceling booking. I was waiting for the price. It is 3.5 lac onroad more than I expected for 4 seater basic car.
When he said "ice cream and cake both are deserts" the debate itself ended there . Both have their own sweet spot to charm you
This is a good discussion. Thar is a great go anywhere grand tourer. I like mine a lot because it can munch miles all day everyday. It’s got the ‘legs’. But then, I also like my Gypsy a lot, simply because of its uncomplicated, amazingly lightweight go anywhere nature. So I am sure the Jimny is also going to be loved by those who value lightness and nimbleness and agility. It’s a truly great vehicle. Forget all this “road presence” rubbish. That’s just an euphemism for ‘might is right’, which is certainly not right.
just going by the looks.. I'd pick Thar!
I can watch these two people talk about cars for hours.
Some things that work in Jimny's favour is a proper metal roof, which helps in cabin insulation from temperature (should have been sound too but I hear sound insulation isnt great), no roof leaks, easier to mount carrier/RTT/boxes etc. The narrow dimensions means, it can do trails more easily, probably with less scratches, easier to judge terrain, less roll could also mean less chance of tipping over on tricky terrain. In Jimny's case Solid axles provide better articulation without compromising handling. Ridiculous amount of choices when it comes to customization, most global hardware should be back compatible with the 5 door. Mileage is similar to the Thar diesel, but maintenance could be a lot cheaper (maruti and a petrol). Easier access to the rear seats, a boon for families with one car should do it all philosophy. 3 door is basically a mountain goat, though added length of 5 door could hamper that, it can mostly likely do most of the things. Tuning options are readily available, turbo, supercharger options (for the people with big monies of course). No altitude sickness, no starting trouble too I assume. Most of Thar owners (barring genuine enthusiasts, buy it to satisfy their ego. They don't need a 4WD, they wont use it either, but like being seen driving one. Mera bada hai kinds). So the RWD with 4x4 stickers will do the magic of getting those customers in. P.S. I know Thar is a very capable machine, no denying that, I am just talking about the consumers that's all. So both Jimny and Thar each have their customer base, but given the rise in popularity in lifestyle segments (for various reasons), I don't think Jimny will have any issues raking numbers. May not be Maruti Suzuki kinda numbers, but numbers that will keep most manufacturers happy enough.
You forgot the reliability factor. Forget about Thar, Jimny will outlive its owner. The sharp edges and metal pieces sticking out of Thar is just not easy to live with for a city dweller. Also, Jimny is small because Suzuki wants to keep it small. Its not a weakness, its a feature - live with it.
What a lovely video and insights.
Very thoughtfully put together. You guys are my fav!
Thanks Ashwin
@@zigwheels guys, I have a request. While you are reviewing the Alcazar turbo or the Carens turbo 1.5L, it would be great if you can compare the 1.5L turbo with the 2L NA of the Alcazar. A lot of us are still curious as to how an identically powered turbo will fare against the naturally aspirated petrol engine. Pls walk us through the drivability, performance, efficiency across few scenarios!
Thar owners egos get hurt.
That rwd is better than jimny in offroad😂
@@DarthVader-vh5yq That was the dumbest comment ever made on KZhead!
@@DarthVader-vh5yq What?👀😵💫🤣
@Darth Vader You mean a Jimny without a driver? Cause a Jimny with a driver can destroy even a 4wd thar off the road.
Skip both and go for a Tractor a well offroader and all-rounder
😆
Comparing Jimny and Thar is exactly like comparing Xpulse and Himalayan. Just like Xpulse, Jimny is simple, light weight, extremely capable offroader with a ton of mod support available, backed up by our biggest automakers (MSIL & Hero). Whereas Thar is this butch, heavy, mile munching torque monster which can also do off roading, just like Himalayan. Both are unique in their own ways. It depends on what you want.
A very sensible discussion but will it make sense to our ' black editions, large Panoramic sunroof, huge truck size tyres' loving public is doubtful.
Jimny will be a practical choice given the prices maruti dropped because we all know 5-door Thar will be 20+ lakhs and much heavier with some cosmetic changes. Whereas Jimny with 5 door(4 seater), and capable off road qualities and the most important- the huge modification market 'cause let's be honest everyone is going for the bigger tires first😂 could still hit under 20 lakh mark. Its just a better and practical choice.
Loved the edit for Jimny's prices🙌🏻😂
I think the Jim needs an extra gear & the RWD Thar needs to become more civilised (car like). Iceing on the cake would be a proper rear door and rear captain seats for the Thar allowing ingress from the rear ( like the Gurkha)
I think its simply not possible for Thar to offer entry to the rear seats like Gurkha offers. Thar May be wider in dimensions, but given the lower roof height, the seats are placed between the seat well and not inline or over them, so one you simply cannot walk in from the rear( its floor is higher than front) and two, its not possible to carve out gap to even get to the seats from the back.
What about safety rating
the points you made are exactly why i would pick the Jimny over the Thar. Great video ❤❤
Which one has a better automatic gearbox? @zigwheels
The Thar’s feels more modern to use for sure
Another aspect that will set them both apart is the reliability & After Sales Service of Maruti & Mahindra. One can expect absolutely flawless & hassle free experience with the Jimny for years to come as it is so much better engineered. But I've a feeling that Nexa might charge an additional premium just because it's an off-roader and a niche product.
Mahindra has improved its services to the level of Maruti. But the no. of times you need to go to the service center is always high for Tin Ka Dabba Maruti Suzuki. Shame!!
I've said it earlier and I'll say it again. If Mahindra does launch the Bolero Neo 4x4, it will absolutely obliterate the Jimny. Of course, Bolero Neo might not have the butch looks of the Jimny, but it would be purpose-built and definitely many buyers would lap up to the Mahindra brand.
If the pricing is cheap, Gurkha 3 door is enough to beat the sale of Thar and Jimny. Since it is more practical than Thar and offer good off-road capabilities!!!!!!
Gurkha is not as good as neither the thar nor the jimny
Projections on Thar 5 door's release date?
Jan-March 2024 possibly. Definitely not this year
@@zigwheels Thanks alot
You guys really are India's own Carmudgeon show! Love seeing you discuss car stuff, and keep producing more such vids
Thanks man!
You should have included mahindra bolero in the comparison discussion.
Compare Family Car (Jimny) or Personal Car (Thar) .. A Jimny 3 door would be a better comparison and also Mods to both vehicles are important point of comparison.
Great videos unbiased and a great convo
Thank you 🙏
Perfect analysis n I like it
these two bestfriends talking cars is so much informative and entertaining....😁😁😁😁 (they exactly know why i called them best friends 😂😂)
Let's count how much jimny can sell
At 11:00 it was literally a 3 wheel drive. Lower KERB weight gonna bring lots of safety issues
JIMNY is a good off-road vehicle But as far as city it's a work in progress It doesn't have utility spaces like 1 litre bottle sockets in the doors & many such things which can make it an aspirational vehicle for those who wants to use it as primary car in the cities
Soon after the Delivery... Grt Jugaadu Engrs wud intro realistic, unrealistic, modes to Jimney. All Jimney needs are 16 instead of 15 AT tyres for people do off roads otherwise 15 routine is excellent.... A snorkal, a roof luggage rack, front thinner bumper to improve Approach angle, basic plate for body key parts protection and Two captain seats in rear. To improve Recline angle though present is fine for 100 Kms run non stop.. Captain seats or individual seats can b from front seats of Older wagon R or Ertiga... That's all
A great review, but did we hear these disadvantages of Thar in the initial reviews 😂?
Relative to the Jimny, no, the standalone off-roader behaviour and related issues, yes.
many off-road enthusiasts of today forget what the original CJ's weighed .(less than a ton ) smaller yet powerful simple engines ... and mind you those jeeps traversed muds , rivers , snow., Deserts , air dropped , used as recoil gun for army..farm jeeps , fire deptt and what not . Correct power to weight ratio, enough torque and four wheel drive with a skillful driver can tackle any situation.
Which one will you choose now that the Jimny price is out?
both😂
Give me an Alto, pls.
Great video
Jimmney is a Jimmney and Thar is a Thar, but Jimmney is more practical off roader !
Jimmy is literally over priced😢😢😢 for the price of thar RWD buying a maruti who does it in India just for milage. And Jimmy does have as much as tech and betterment as available in thar.
You forgot to mention about safety..
Nice conversation
🙌🏻🙌🏻
Can Jimny be the only car in guarage for a small family? For idea, Take the Jimny for a long road trip, on highways only!
i guess it surely can be the one family car in your garage, but a thar cannot.
That was the idea why Maruti made 5 door version of it.
You said it right Jimny is 🧸 toy and yes Jimny petrol and Thar petrol both are of 16 lakh on road
Jimny is worlwide japnese machine successful selling over 190 countries from past 40 years nd thar is banned in all good countries, mahindra need to work alot on research nd development, its only like chinese first copy of jeep . Jimny is 👑 king. 😊
Turning radius is very high Knowing that it's a small car
Its a big shock given by maruti to jimny booking customers regarding prices.. jimny ( 103ps &130nm toque) zeta on road AP is above 15lakh... where as Thar diesel base (RWD) is 12.80 lakh(116ps& 300nm torque) ... 😂😂😂... so we can say stongly that jimny can compitate with Thar in pricing only....
For off road? I don't think people who are buying rwd thar are looking at jimny. They are going for thar just for the looks and look at how many thars are for sale people really get bored of thar early it's just a form over function kind of decision it's not stable it's not very practical you either get to sit in the rear or place stuff. Jimny is a practical and better off roader in all sense than the thar. Also after driving a thar rwd doesn't makes sense because it compromises everything for the look especially it's bumpy ride.
Buy thar add front wheel drive kit.
Jimny is a compact 4 mancar Thar is a spacious 4 mancar. Guess these 2 are matching only on fuel efficiency lol. Both of them can give ~ 11-15 kmpl... Badly hope that future Jimnys come up with 150 bhp...
Thar mileage is single digit for petrol
Now this is off road car era. We love all the affordable off road car thar, jimny, gurkha
For Manual - Buy the GRAND VITARA ALL GRIP / Scorpio N (if you actually get the delivery) For Auto - well the next car is almost 1.5 x of their price so .. there is no other option !!
I decided to go with Jimny but after I saw its actual size. I dropped the idea - Wagnor and Jimny were looking same in size. I'm planning Gurkha
Pricing is up now! Jimny and Thar's prices are almost the same. Now the main decision comes down to the psyche of the buyer. There is no perfect target audience for these cars. Just the person has an adventurous side to him/her. Coming to my main point - while comparing the features/prices the buyer will think " If I am paying 15 lakhs for MARUTI SUZUKI JIMNY" might as well pay a similar price for a Thar. Just because of its past, the dream, Indian company etc. This is just my opinion.
thar❤️🇮🇳
Id rent one of these when needed that’s all .
Great Car Put new 1.4 ltr 3 cylinder Normally Aspirated Engine * Maruti use new engine in new car
85% booking vanished
If they put price bellow 10 then there will be no buyers for brezza . They will not let a product effect their mass market item . This happend with s cross , SX4 .
Then what is the point in releasing 5 door virsion. They could have just released the 3 door one. I was waiting for 3 door one. Dumb strategy from Maruthi.
If Student choose car in a classroom. Back benchers buy Thar fully rough and tough muscular Middle benchers buy Jimny can be tough if needed by wants to be decent too. Front benchers buy Alto k10 small fully decent and impressive onroad performance.
That’s an interesting way of putting it 😃
I would have always picked Jimny over that if in looking for a lifestyle vehicle... I booked fronx just for the reason we are a family of five....
We love our gypsies and marutis in the mountains 🏔️
An off roader has to be agile, sure footed and torquey. Thar gives it all. Jimny is a light weight "off roader" which is not agile and torquey. It is an off roader which is not an off roader. Its just a fragile 4x4 brought in to confuse the budget customers desiring a Thar but can't go for it. Jimny is a 4x4 S -Presso..
JIMNY is for the practical buyers, where as THAR is for egoistic buyers.
by the way i get it, ice-cream and cakes are both deserts..🙃😉
Ya. That about sums it up perfectly. 👍🏼
Hey man, don't just clump all of us into a single generalized category; there're some of us who use our Thars' to their full potential.
Bit all encompassing to put it that way no?
@@zigwheels 👍🏼
The Jimny will be just so much easier to live with.
You guys need to drive the Jimmy more extensively to comment.. as the terrain in which the Jimmy was showcased is just to highlight the Jimmy's plus points. Deep slush and I'd love to see the underpowered 1.5 NA 😢😢
We look forward to testing this. Monsoons can’t get here soon enough
Jimny should have been wider to accomodate 3 ppl at the back...
11:03
Waiting for Toyota badged Jimny
Mahindra production capacity is not enough to deliver the product in right time.
IMO skip all three and buy Scorpio N. ❤✌️
Gurkha be like, "Toh mai kya karun? Job chhod dun?"
I like "Ice cream and cakes, both are deserts" Lol... Jimny would be more pocket friendly and drivable as majority of the time we will be driving it in city. Both are capable vehicles, now its up the the buyers what is there priority, looks or practicality.
Everything about Jimny is making sense... except Price !
It's fuel efficiency is very low.. And price is overrated.
Thar is better for showcasing, whereas jimny is more practical...
Basically Maruti Suzuki leads Indian market as in sales figures. And jimny is just going to add up more to it. I am getting one for sure. Its way more practical than Thar for daily runs and also for long routes.
Scorpio-N makes more sense when it's put up against the Jimny
Thar shames Jimny the same way wrangler shames Thar. 😂 Jimny is way more practical than thar anyday ✔️ With tyre upgrade the bulky look somewat competes with stock thar.
But Jimny they didn't undercut the prices, instead they increased the price...😂😂😂 Size is less, natural aspirated engine, weight less, tyre size is less, everything is less but the prize alone is high...😐
I just bought the Jimny. I shouldnt have bought the Jimny....I bought the Jimny.
At last its a fact that everyone will go for maruti if there is one in that segment. 😅
Availability/access does make a difference
So odd that you are releasing this video after the prices are know. Are your thoughts really the same still? The bookings are getting cancelled at double the speed. 😂
The reasons to choose one over the other stay the same. But yes, at least the starting price should’ve been ₹1 lakh lower - Tushar
Jimny- VFM and practical, Thar- looks so, obviously ppl will go with Thar.
Not at this price. In my place onroad coat is 16 to 18.5 lac. 12.5 to 15 is the right price.
Still i don't think zimny should be conpared with Thar
Skip jimny, thar, gurkha and go for second hand fortuner. Always better choice.
Wonder if the Jimny just made used Fortuner values go even higher than they already are 😛
Gurkha 👍
