  • I’m Australian. I grew up in the 1950-60s. Anzac bikkies were an institution. Every household made them for ANZAC day. However over time and as more mothers took work outside the home less families made their own. I like handmade basic ingredients best so have always kept up the tradition. It’s interesting to see the slight variations in recipes. Ours were always a cup each of rolled oats, desiccated coconut, flour, BROWN sugar. And absolutely golden syrup! No substitute for that 😂

I will always remember being so excited that I made these on my own and wanted to show off at home by making them again. I made them again, and forgot the coconut 🤣

  • Thanks for this recipe. I had never heard of Anzac day and the history regarding it. I will be making these biscuits today...they sound delicious. In Canada we do call them cookies but I have read that in certain places in New Zealand and Australia that it is against the law to call them cookies. Not sure if that is an old law or not...cheers from Canada.

    • Australians like me who first experienced a world before mass global marketing in our faces from morn till night can be quite protective of our culture and vernacular. We have especially been inundated with USA media and thus terms via cartoons, tv shows, movies, and advertising. We are definitely at risk of losing common use of typical Australian names and terms. My grandchildren are known to be pulled up on it 😉😅

  • Hi Carina, I've been viewing/reading Anzac biscuit recipes and yours is the one I want to try. I live in the USA, where "golden syrup" is not something we know about. So I bought a squeeze bottle from Amazon. Its subtitle is "dessert syrup" and it seems thinner and lighter in color than the syrup I am seeing in most videos. It ranges from pale and easy to pour to dark and more like old honey in density. What's the skinny on golden syrup? What should I be looking for in terms of color and consistency? Thanks.

    @robindjw4539@robindjw45394 жыл бұрын
    • Hi 😊 The golden syrup is for flavour so if it's a bit thinner it shouldn't be a huge issue. If it doesn't work you can also substitute for honey
