Welcome back to Edmunds U-Drags, our series of down-and-back drag races that incorporate a standing quarter mile, handling, and a rolling start all in one race! In this episode, our all-electric Lucid Air Grand Touring squares up against the hybrid Acura NSX Type S. Will the Lucid’s power advantage and instant torque be enough to overcome the Acura’s superior handling and lighter weight?

Which car would you rather drive flat out, the Lucid Air GT or the Acura NSX Type S? Let us know in the comments.
The Lucid is good for maybe 2 u-drag races before it's overheated with cooked brakes, while the NSX can track, all day.
I own a NSX Type S and I'm very happy with it!
Vette
NSX all day every day over the Lucid.
Nice review keep up the good work fellas Nsx
For the Lucid to even be competitive is an enormous feat. These two products were NOT built for the same target audience. Unbelievable.
Seriously. They are not lucid fans, that is clear.
Need to see NSX Type S vs. Corvette E-Ray
I was coming to say that, type s vs E-ray or z06
Think they are announcing the Z06 hybrid this fall. Should be absolute bananas
you beat me to it
as much as i love the nsx i think the vette would destroy
@@spedracer55it should, Honda gave GM their homework on the NSX as part of the technology sharing deal.
I wish I had the money for an NSX type-S. I think it looks amazing and holy shit do Honda V6s sound amazing.
I have driven quite a few of the NSX's but not the Type S. It is simply one of the best handling and most underrated cars out there. Yes, they do sound amazing.
The second race he said he didn’t make a mistake but on his turn he was almost off the track lol
3rd race had major driver errror too in the turn badly
Exactly, that car could do a much better turn.
They’re still drag racing the Lucid on 19” rims and all season tires. The Lucid would perform even better on 21” with summer tires; better traction.
And slotted rotors with 6 piston front and rear... a little aftermarket would go a long way.
This was a scam. White dude totally faked his run.
And the nsx would do better with better tires, better brakes and
Repeat that maneuver several times in a row and any tires on the Lucid will overheat and then disintegrate...meanwhile the NSX will keep going at the same pace. Lucid can't handle many long corners in a row without its tires giving up.
@pistonburner6448 very true... physisics always wins. But, it'd help.
WOW THAT TURBO V6 ACTUALLY SOUNDS EPIC.
No one said ever lol
Yes it sounds bad ass, I agree.
granted it's pretty rare for a Factory TTV6 to sound nice except for the Ferrari 269GTB with its 120 degree V6. Love HondaS2K BTW. @@gigi9467
It sounds quite sick actually,ngl
I owned an Acura almost from day one ! In the first Gran Turismo game that is ...
If you get an acura, never get an ILX, you'll be hugely disappointed. It ruined the acura brand for me, coming from an elantra, I'd much rather have an elantra over an ILX
@@jonathans4503 we care for performance cars.
@@jonathans4503 I only drive Acura or Honda but never liked the ilx because of the design and how small it is. But I would never drive a fucking Hyundai.
@@xMarkuzx that's on you. An elantra has better value and more fun to drive than an ILX. I've driven both and that's my personal opinion.
koreans got too cocky, they were really reliable years ago but they slipped big time. they are still reliable but would pick a honda anyday. just ask most mechanics They always say honda or toyota have fewer problems than other makers. @@jonathans4503
Awesome! Please do more content... lots of it. Greetings from Canada.
Yoo, amazing work. Keep it coming, plesase.
next : Plaid vs Sapphire please!! 😁
i think sapphire completely destroys the plaid.
This would be a good one for sure
The Sapphire is faster than the Plaid in a drag race and is engineered a hell of a lot better with way better driving dynamics. I don’t see how the Plaid can win.
Yess! Though Jason Camisa already did that on Haggerty and the Saphire mopped the floor with the Plaid. Which means that it's just absolutely INSANE.
lol yall just watched the lucid cook its brakes in one run and you think the Plaid is the one going to have a tough time? Pretty sure they’ve tested and raced in some type of German ‘Ring and it was a monster
Saturn logo hat for the win!
FUN! So much better than just a straight race. Thanks!
Fun stuff, seen a few of these videos and the driver difference is astronomical.
This just showed how awesome the NSX is
Great race! Acura NSX Type S came out on top!💪🏿😎
Awesome race! Love it!!
Come on,we need this(the NSX)to race against the Z06.Please make it happen Edmunds!
The NSX Type-S should have been the new NSX from the start.
Facts had us waiting this long then made the good one and yep thats it we done no more again lol 😂
What's crazy, is the 3rd gen NSX actually was super fast for it's time.
Yeah, try with Lucid’s Sapphire next time 😀
I like your U-Drag races!
This series is just badass!🔥
Literally, all ev’s get hot and pull power after only a few full acceleration pulls. Even one of my slow cars (boosted g) has easily beat model 3 performance (which it shouldn’t have) after only a couple of back to back freeway roll races. Lithium batteries are just to hard to cool down once they start getting heat soaked
Both of these cars are amazing. The NSX as a weekend car and the Lucid as the daily luxury driver. Different use cases for these two.
you can use NSX as daily driver too because it is hybrid.
@@ereinaldy20 of course but nothing beats a luxury electric car for daily driving comfort. The nsx still has terrible gas mileage.
Both are some dope cars... Nice Saturn cap. They were one of my favorite cars back in the day. We had a '95 SL1. It would be nice if they were bought back to life as an electric car brand.
Acura NSX vs Corvette Z06 please... Edit: I think I saw someone else mention the e-Ray and that might make more sense? Either way, let's do this!
The Vette would win
Pretty please
Didn’t you see the leaderboard? The vette z06 is far ahead, even the GT500 is faster and quicker than this nsx.
You're saying you don't want to see Chevy beat down Acura? LOL @@voodoodiecast
The E-ray vs NSX would be like Floyd Mayweather Jr vs Roger Mayweather. The NSX laid the foundation and the E-ray is ahead a generation of hybrid tech.
Need more U drag races !
this is a true way to race..great vid, ice ftw!
Love that NSX!!! Diggin that Saturn cap too! 👍🏽
U drag. That's an awesome concept.
The Saturn hat FTW! I still have hat and jacket from my Saturn Sky Turbo days.
I love these races. Anyway to race old cars vs new ? Like a Gallardo or 430 vs a modern EV. Would be interesting.
yeah, have you seen Carlow race an old Gallardo against the seal?
Best head to head drag racing on YT.
These videos are waaay better than the garbage Motortrend is pooping out. Thank you Edmunds.
At least Motor Trend would have had the integrity to put the factory 21" wheels with high-performance summer tires on the Air instead of the narrower 19" all-season tires Edmunds is using. Tires play a huge role in every element of this race: acceleration, turning, braking. By deliberately under-tiring the Air for this matchup against a pure sports car on fat tires, Edmunds was once again stretching every way it could to denigrate the Lucid Air.
your u-drag is a good format, compared to just a standard straightline drag!
I'm so proud about the NSX! I want it, it's so fast, so beautiful, just I love it😍♥️
Would love to see the GTR vs the NSX in UDrag. I know the GTR beats the NSX in the quarter mile but this is obviously more than just driving in a straight line. Should be an awesome race
Would be close with the standard gtr, the gtr nismo would cook the NSX.
I’ve only ever seen the American NSX get beaten by the GTR. When carwow raced the standard NSX vs the GTR, the NSX was quicker than the standard GTR and on par with the NISMO.
@drivescene6747 this.. i think alot of reviewers cooked the books on those nsx reviews.. or they got a detuned model..
@@aoescool a little of both I believe. The European Honda NSX has 581hp and the American Acura NSX has 573hp. That said, an 8hp difference is negligible. These Americans are getting 3 second runs to 60 from a car that does 2.7 and are getting 11s from a car that run high 10s. I also checked the numbers of the NSX Type S with 600hp and the American reviewers got the same acceleration numbers as the 573hp NSX. Makes no sense to me.
Awesome Pun.... at 2.45. I got it by a ~H air~, while driving a licid Air..
You guys should do this with customers or workshops tuned cars
That is a thrilling comparison
And they were being cautious in the turn with the NSX.
And on the brakes
Exactly. With SHAWD you don't need to be cautious around the corners. This is an example of someone who doesn't know how to drive the car. With SHAWD you really need to power through the corner which feels wrong in most cars but trust me that torque vectoring comes in perfectly.
Que pega sensacional... o Honda é demais!!!
Next 💯 combastion to the win 🏆 💪🏽
Is that a Saturn hat? My dad was one of the original 100 engineers at GM tech center in Warren MI back in the 80's! I sold Saturn's as well.
Cannister trans filter, smart
Awesome beautiful nsx and should be proof hybrid is better and imagine if Acura continued to improve it.
E-Ray vs NSX next👍
Well this was nice
Please do NSX vs Corvette E-Ray!
Aí ficou claro que quem ganhou essa corrida foi o piloto. Bem mais rápido na curva....m parabéns ao canal
i’m more interested in Acura NSX Type S vs Corvette E Ray
Did you guys put the right tires this time?
Can you retrofit stronger ev motor and bigger battery on the nsx
Acura NSX, the most underrated American Super Car
It seems the heated electric motors are showing inefficiency starting the round 2
Regardless of how fast it is, one looks like the box the other one came in.
Yeah, that NSX is ugly. The original was so much nicer
@@jtc1964xpretty sure je was talking about lucid 😂😂😂
I have to disagree heavily I think the NSX is beautiful and way better looking than the original. I think most people just have nostalgia for the original but it’s not that good looking imo.
@@darkcircle899 I agree I think the new NSX is beautiful in person. All the proportions are just right, and it's doesn't scream "LOOK AT ME" like some pimp's Lambo. I saw one parked next to a new C8, and coming from a lifelong Corvette guy, it makes the Vette look big and goofy. The Vette should've had the Acura's size and asthetics, and the Acura should've had the Vette's price for performance.
One can also haul 5 people and their luggage and the other one can't. It's actually quite impressive that a 4 door family sedan/saloon can nearly match a purpose built street legal racing machine.
please please do the sonata n line its a true 4 door sleeper and has better comfort and way better seats than the elantra n and would love to see a u drag
Personally I think the whole gas vs EV argument is silly. Both have their purpose and pros and cons, I wish the EV fanboys would understand why EVs don't make good sports cars, and I wish ICE fans would acknowledge the obvious benefits of EVs when it comes to daily drivers. I say this as an enthusiast myself, I've owned several manual transmission sports cars including my current c7 Vette. And I'm telling you, when it comes to daily drivers, a well-executed EV is simply better. We have a Jaguar I-PACE EV as our daily driver. This replaced our 970 Panamera Turbo (both of which we bought used btw), a car that most ICE fans would probably agree is a pretty good daily driver in its own right. And I can honestly say the Jag is better in every single way. I don’t miss the Panamera one bit, neither does the wife. With the Jag, there’s no automatic transmission to get confused around town, never getting into a hot or cold car with preconditioning, there’s insane instant torque, the smoothness and refinement is unmatched (not only because no engine noise but also because the 1000 pound battery insulates you from road noise), the use of space is excellent (small on the outside and big on the inside because no engine), low center of gravity, naturally perfect weight distribution, being able to blow by anyone in traffic anytime, never being in the wrong gear, way more efficient, never being late because I had to stop for gas, no maintenance, quicker than most v8 family cars and more efficient than i-4 family cars, etc etc. And even though on paper the panamera was faster 0-60, in real life around town it’s not even close - the Jag would be gone before the panamera would even get into the right gear. Yes, it can be annoying on road trips - but it's not the end of the world unless you road trip all the time. It's the better car 364 days of the year, and the worse car 1 day of the year. Having said all of that, like I said I'm an enthusiast, and we also have two sports cars (manual transmission c7 corvette stingray and an R56 Mini Cooper JCW, both of which I frequently use for road rallys and autocross), and I have no desire for either of those to be electric. The whole point of those cars is a visceral, loud, lightweight, connected experience with a manual transmission. I know there is a Boxster EV coming soon and I’m sure it’ll be great and smoke my c7 around any racetrack, but I have no interest at all, even as a current EV owner. Sports cars should be gas powered and manual IMO. So as I said, each has their purpose. I don’t see myself ever going back to gas for daily driver, and I don’t see myself ever going EV for sports cars. My point is simple: EVs are better at some things, and gas cars are better at some things. "Taking a side" doesn't make sense, even for enthusiasts. Just acknowledge what the other is better at. EVs dont work for everyone (you need a place to charge and can't road trip all the time etc etc), but if it works in your lifestyle - try it before you knock it is all I'm saying. You might be surprised. And like I said - just because a car is EV doesn't make it good. There are good EVs and bad ones, just like gas cars. For example, I' not a huge Tesla fan. But, the well-executed EVs are, in my opinion, the best daily drivers, if they fit into your lifestyle. ...and this is coming from someone that's currently on his 8th manual transmission sports car (Vette, Mini JCW, 350Z, etc etc). And to be clear - these are my favorite cars, not the I-PACE. But, I have a wife and a kid, and we need something that isn't manual and has a back seat. And in that category, the Jag is by far and away the best we've had.
Test drove the Lucid Air GT last year, the acceleration is mind-bending. Effortless thrust, no drama, just pins you back in your seat and the stretch of road in front of you disappears. Sapphire model must be just ridiculous. That said.. I'm still taking the NSX here.
I own a Lucid GT since Nov. 2022, love the car, but have never needed to use the most powerful mode. It is way faster than I'd ever need.
Kirk is back!!!
Shocking to see the luxury focused long range version with the smallest tires can do this well against performance focused supercars.
This makes me want to see a Corvette E Ray do this test
Starts at 1:55
That third launch on the NSX was spot on.
NSX vs GTR please 🔥💪
Run this one back with the C8 Stingray or C8Z vs that Type S
PLEASE MORE NSX TYPE S DRAG RACES... THE PEOPLE NEED IT
what was lucid's state of charge at each race? and battery temps? I'd guess each subsequent race was diminished and slower.
Give the people the ultimate arch rival battle...NSX vs GT-R!!!
These two would be a nice combo in the garage. If it was a Lucid id have the top dog Lucid Air Sapphire and like a McLaren 720 Spyder as my 2 seater. This also shows how Tesla did a good job with the Plaid. It can do repeated runs and run similar times.
Real answer it comes down to drivers, look at it from a 3rd person perspective it literally looked like the same race just switched cars, so they put the faster car with the guy who can’t handle as fast first and then the guy who can corner second
Can we get the nismo z VS Toyota Supra or M2 on ? PLEASE!
Type S all the way! Man when that car spools up, it rips 👍👍
Maybe test the model S long range
Next time try launching the Lucid properly. After putting it in Sprint, smash the brake and accelerator pedal, wait for launch control “Bear” logo to show up and let go off the brakes. 1:48
I very want the GTR nismo vs GT3RS
Next drag race: NSX type s vs corvette Z06 C8!!!!
A bit wild how fast the Lucid performance degrades. It makes sense that the NSX goes longer, but the Lucid only got a single run in?
Did you also turn off regen on the Lucid?
before watching - goo match up. assuming the lucid got itself a new set of shoes to make up for it's braking and turning issues, I think it will take it. otherwise this electric muscle car won't be able to best mid engine dynamics (even if way too much of the transmission is behind the rear axel)
10:23 dude, this week I accidentally figured out that the CT's torque numbers are underrated by around 20-30%, I've done enough nerding out. lol
So epic...a family super sedan with proper seating for 3 adults in the back seat beats a sports coupe. Lucid has built something special here folks.
Yeah for more the 100k better be good for that price 😮
@@ju4121it extremely is. Better than a sclsss, eqs, BMW 7 series at that price. N if you spend 250 k get a car better than an average lambo n ferrari
The Lucid Grand Touring is available with 21" wheels wearing high-performance summer tires. Why would Edmunds mount the 19" wheels with narrower all-season tires on the Air for a drag race against an all-out sports car? Oh, yeah . . . so they can handicap the Air as much as possible for such a showdown. This is just another episode in Edmunds' continuing campaign against the Lucid Air.
U drags are the best over all and simple idea in measuring performance in forever.
What a difference drivers make.
Now do one that is 90% braking and cornering and 10% straightaway. Any time it’s electric vs. anything else, it should be at least 50/50 rather than basically a drag race.
Not sure if I missed it but the hidden launch mode isn't even being used on the GT... wouldn't even be close if it was!
It's not hidden if it's in the manual. Granted it's not a setting that you will find in your own, like most things that are in the configuration screens. But if you buy a car, reading the manual isn't too much to expect.
If Edmunds bought the Lucid Air intending to use it in U-Drag videos, could someone explain to me why they chose to buy the car with the 19" wheels wearing all-season rubber instead of the 21" wheels wearing Pirelli summer tires (which are also 20mm wider in the rear) for which most Lucid GT buyers opt? It's as if they are deliberately handicapping the Lucid.
When he described launch mode on the Lucid and said "and that's it," I hope he didn't mean it literally. After that, he needs to hold the brake, floor the accelerator and wait for the car to tell him that launch mode is active. Then he needs to take his foot off the brake pedal. If he didn't use launch mode but it was used on the Acura, it gave the Acura an unfair advantage.
Maybe you guys should put performance tires on it. Blaming the brakes 😂
What’s the price of the two??
Like to see c8z06 vs m5 cs
"Lucid is overcooked!" Best quote! Great race and video everyone involved!!! 🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁
Brakes are absolutely the limiting factor in tracking or autocross for EVs. When you have a car that weighs that much it doesn't really matter what you're straight line speed is if you can't reliably corner consistently. Honestly this is the only type of drag race that should matter at this point. Straight line 1/4 mile times are pretty disingenuous when comparing cars in regards to performance.
Nsx should be convertible backspace to sit with vertical doors on it
There’s a difference between fast and quick. Quick is most electric cars. Yes, it’s fun and cool to go in a quick line but like you said.. over and over again is where the engineering, parts and development come in. I’d easily take the NSX. I think a lot of people gave it shit when it came out but it was a head of its time. We’re seeing the same thing in a Corvette now,,, and the NSX came out in 2017! Lucid is a great car but it’s an electric sedan, not a true sports car.
There should be drag races with a small slalom in the middle
NSX prices are about to skyrocket again!!
I'd rather the lucid
well no sh*t, ones a practical dad car the other is a TRACK car... unless you plan on going to a track or showing off why would you buy a nsx? thats why theres limited quantity of them... good input though! cant believe someone would take practicality over track laps times.. who knew!@@JamaicanMeCrazy
@@stevenfernandez969 it's not that deep bro. People like what they like and buy what they want. The op clearly was insinuating that he thinks the nsx is superior and that's alright. Lots of people live impractical sports cars
