  • Part of being an actor is being able to move smoothly during a scene, even when the action might not seem realistic. At 2:30, after Gowron has delivered his important news, and the camera tracks into a closeup of Picard's reaction, you can see Jonathan Frakes slowly rotate his body and move away from Stewart as the camera moves in, giving Stewart the frame and letting the lights fall onto his head so things are properly lit at the end of the camera move. Very smooth, Commander.

    @doteaters@doteaters2 жыл бұрын
    • True, but when you combine his body movements with his facial expression, then someone who didn't hear the dialogue might have thought that Gowron just accused Picard of doing something repulsive to a child :D

      @CzechMirco@CzechMirco2 жыл бұрын
    • @@CzechMirco Contextually it makes sense, since Picard is the neutral arbiter of succession to the Klingon empire. A Klingon civil war could and would be directly tied to him and Starfleet. Hence, Riker's dramatic denouement to Picard.

      @knightshousegames@knightshousegames2 жыл бұрын
    • @@knightshousegames It wasn't that he was weak in TNG, it was that the council was mostly corrupt. It hits home later this episode when Worf tells Gowron the truth and Gowron's reaction is being horrified that the entire council knew the truth behind Worf's discommendation.

      @seandlax9@seandlax92 жыл бұрын
    • @@seandlax9 But the thing is, Gowron isn't honorable either, he was just slightly less bad than the Duras. I think the entire point is how sad it was for the Klingon Empire that Gowron was the best guy they had. He was a weak, divisive opportunist who just wanted power without any actual leadership skills of his own. Gowron not knowing about Worf's situation mostly just reinforces how out of touch he is, everyone but the guy in charge knew what was going on. Like looking at it from an outside perspective, K'mpec dying left a massive power vacuum, and neither the Duras or Gowron's factions had a lot of legitimate power, so both went to outside sources to back them up, The Duras to the Romulans, Gowron to the Federation. It basically turned that battle of succession into a proxy war between The Federation and The Romulans.

      @knightshousegames@knightshousegames2 жыл бұрын
    • @@knightshousegames Gowron was an outsider to a corrupt council with enough merit and leadership to be a leading challenger to the seat of Chancellor. Gowron also didn't initially go to the Feds. K'mpec did. Gowron goes to the Feds later since a massively powerful family being secretly backed by the Romulans is about to plunge the Empire into a civil war. As for Worf's situation, it was a state secret that K'mpec is no uncertain terms proclaims will remain secret and never be spoken of again.

    @Archie2c@Archie2c2 жыл бұрын
    • That's because whoever preps the actors makes them understand what the stake the characters are after. Gowron is clearly both ambitious but also genuinely concerned for the welfare of the Empire. Picard here isn't interested in playing puppet to Gowron's power plays but at the same time knows what the Duras family represents to the balance of power in the quadrant given the history of allegiance to the Romulans the Duras family has. That context is in the backdrop to the acting you're getting from both men on the screen. The problem with Discovery and even Picard is that too often those on screen have no sense of their character's history or end game!

    • That's the thing, the old saying rings true, power corrupts. Once Gowron was Chancellor and his rivals had been put down, he fell into the same corruption and lust for power and personal gain that befell other Chancellors before him. Jadzia even asks Worf at one point if there was ever a Chancellor in his lifetime that he had respect for because the High Council was like this. And you see it happen in the real-world too. People getting into political power who at first seem to stand up for strong and noble ideals and want to work for the good of their nation but as time goes on, they become bureaucrats more interested in supporting the system that supports them.
