This would have to be one of the most fascinating conversations to date in the Mastering Risk Management podcast!
Alan usually gives interviews to the likes of CNN, the BBC and Al Jazeera so to get him on the podcast is a real win for our listeners. And the conversation is well worth the listen.
Alan takes us on a journey of what Artificial Intelligence is, how it's being deployed and why we all need to get involved. AI is a defining moment in our history and to not be a part of it risks being left behind.
I ask Alan a question in the chat which I think would be on many people's minds - how do I get started with AI? His response was so simple and to the point - he said 'who trained you on Facebook or LinkedIn? Just get in and have a go!'
I'd strongly encourage you to invest in your future and take the time to listen to this episode - I am sure you will not regret it!
Your thoughts and feedback are always welcome. Enjoy!

  • 🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 🤖 Dr. Alan Thompson is an expert in artificial intelligence (AI) and human intelligence. He provides AI consulting to organizations like the UN, EU, and Commonwealth. His work is featured globally. 01:18 🛡️ In May 2020, the release of AI model GPT-3 was a breakthrough, outperforming human intelligence. This motivated Dr. Thompson's pivot to focus on AI. 03:37 💼 Dr. Thompson sees AI as amplifying human capabilities 1000x, like having a boardroom of PhDs working 24/7. The applications are infinite based on imagination. 08:03 🧠 AI involves techniques like machine learning and natural language processing. Generative AI can create unique text and images, conceptualizing like humans. 14:08 💬 Prompts are questions posed to AI models. Careful prompt engineering is becoming less necessary as models understand natural language better. 18:16 🖥️ Organizations can implement AI via API access to major models, their own models, or small local models. Larger models are more capable. 25:38 😨 Some people react to AI with exaggerated fear. Focusing on possibilities and applications is more productive. AI alignment work continues. 38:15 ✅ To start with AI, be hands-on. Test free web tools like ChatGPT, play with prompts, and see what it can generate for your niche. 59:09 🚀 The pace of AI advancement is exponential, with thousands of papers monthly. What exists now will be basic compared to imminent releases. 01:05:37 📚 Dr. Thompson's website lifearchitect.ai has AI summaries, annotated papers, and key insights - a fantastic resource to learn. • Great podcast, Alan. I work in Silicon Valley and see LLMs already causing significant disruption in the SWE industry. I've been saying the same that this technology is rapidly evolving and humans need to adapt and use it to augment their current jobs. I think we're in a lull period while humans figure how to interact with the technology in a productive way. LLMs in their current form slow humans down through prompts, in my opinion. The next logical revolution will be AI on AI self-tuning/learning or something closer to AGI. JARVIS from The Iron Man movies come to mind. I believe this is where human spiritual and ethical concerns will come along. The created becoming the creator. Will these LLMs be considered "sentient"? Lots of debate still to come from corporate boardrooms to Congressional halls...

    • How do you propose LLMs reading your needs without prompts? Unless it's already integrated in the tool you use and provide suggestions (e.g. auto-complete), atm only brain activity reading can tell the LLM what you want...

      @andanssas@andanssas9 ай бұрын
    • A pre-prompt conversation with an advanced LLM would allow it to know you and what you want, and then function semi autonomously in carrying out the "big picture" of what you conversed about without micromanagement prompting. Sounds like mjcro8055 just wants to cut down on the unnecessary prompt interactions at every step. No brain computer interface necessary. Just a LLM -human long term relationship, maybe?

    • @@TheBehnjamin auto-GPTs are nice, but atm can go way off anything you want. Even in the concept you are suggesting, a first prompt or accessing personal data before interactions are needed. Integration with the tool or operating system is a way to do get part of that data, integration with a person social media interactions may be hard to be legally released (if published to the public).

    • @@aiartrelaxation It is pretty exciting to see developments in humanoid robotics start to accelerate. Companies like Figure are making impressive progress. While there are still many challenges, having robots take on dangerous and repetitive tasks could significantly improve the quality of life for many people. The potential for assistive robots to help the elderly and disabled is also huge. Of course, we must proceed thoughtfully, ensuring these technologies are deployed ethically. But I share your enthusiasm - this does feel like the beginning of a significant transformation that could benefit humanity in many ways.

  • Does everyone deserve to transcend? I doubt a lot of people will even want to due to fear. The future is crazy man

    @reeegz@reeegz9 ай бұрын
    • I don't know about deserve. Who decides what we deserve? That will quickly get very judemental, like heaven and hell. There is however something I have been thinking about: a crisis that a lot of people are going to have trouble adjusting to having the freedom to create their own life. I recall an elderly couple in Texas that won, at that time, the biggest lottery ever. When asked what they were going to do with their near billion dollar prize, they were talking about buying a new washing machine and such. I think a lot of people ten years from now will have trouble creating what they want their life to be. Strangled by the prospect of too many choices.

    • @@Ben_D. Currently the free market and dumb luck decides. That money represents resources and potential for good and was wasted on those people. At least it wasn't used for evil. I guess the point is people will only get what they can consent to want from ASI. Thus they will only ask for what they deserve, and won't be granted anything they don't know to or can't request? i.e something they don't want to understand and fear, or something too scarce that prevents someone else's prosperity, or anything that creates suffering. who knows. buckle up

  • The host grilled that an AI expert likes a fish stick over an open flame! His probing questions sparked some electrifying answers that lit up the conversation. The expert was fried by the end, but he left us energised with his rarer insights than a bluefin tuna. Let's tune in again and see what other shocking discoveries he can make! Hopefully, the following interview flounders less and brings more food for thought.
