Giant Paper Wasp Nest Cast In Epoxy Resin And Cut In Half

We wanted to know what's inside a giant paper wasps nest. So we cast it in epoxy resin and then cut it in half with our 60,000 PSI waterjet to get a nice cross section of it. It turned out better than most of our projects!

  • You guys need a good pressure pot to help with bubble-free casting. Pressure pots basically crush the bubbles so tiny they vanish. That was a huge improvement in casting already, you guys are getting really close to perfecting it enough that you don't have to second-guess what you're doing.

    • Isn't it the point of the vacuum chamber ?

      @tompomarede742@tompomarede7422 жыл бұрын
    • Yes and no. The vacuum chamber will get some air out but not all of it in a casting that big, and with the complexity of the wasp nest there's a lot of places air can hide that the vacuum chamber won't get.

      @drstrangefart@drstrangefart2 жыл бұрын
    • After wonder though if a pressure pot would crush a wasps nest because the resin would push its way and forcefully and the paper would not resist the pressure. So you have to wonder if that method would crush the wasps nest.

      @garybenninger1544@garybenninger15442 жыл бұрын
    • Nah. If Ben's Worx could cast an inflated potato chip without crushing it, it won't crush the wasp nest.

      @drstrangefart@drstrangefart2 жыл бұрын
    • Y'all got me confused, I do not see the difference in a pressure pot vs a vac chamber. I believe you see the casting, covered down inside a stainless pan with a green gasket just a few minutes in... They are vacuuming otherwise that thing would never have come out so well

  • Cutting a pure block of polished resin would be cool to see. And then fill the voids cut by the water jet with different colours of resin for some cool looking art.

    • Cut about half way, then bluish resin to vein and insert nozzle on top of that (like it's cutting when it's on desk. 2. Add Inside cube toycar? Poor illusion like that is going to be cut.

  • That shot at 5:18 is pretty neat! It's not often we get to watch the waterjet go all the way through the material (because most things aren't translucent unfortunately) Now I kinda wanna watch a cube of resin this size, with nothing in it be cut in real time lol
