Boss Designs of Dark Souls 2: The Fume Knight kzhead.info/sun/gK2KYtuwjHqehKs/bejne.html
Another piece of storytelling when it comes to Raime is thanks to other items that are associated with him. More specifically, before he got the huge sword, he had a shield. He was essentially the shield to Velstadt’s hammer. But Raime had been the first to realize the true nature of the queen. But king Vendrick wouldn’t hear of it. So there is an interesting prospect to the fume knight’s character that he more than likely understood exactly what the queen he falls in love with actually is just like with Nashandra.
Good to note that if you walk into the boss room while using Velstadt's helmet, he'll jump straight to phase 2. Be it out of anger, or respect. He sees you as a real threat, since you've managed to kill the only person to have bested him in combat.
I like this little detail. I would say its despise for Velstadt. If you read the entries of the related items it seems to me like Raime resented Velstadt for being the favorite of Vendrick. He very likely still had respect but Raime was the one being defeated and if I remember correctly banished for speaking up.
@@DefinitelyFroggyDioBrando I think it depends. From what I remember, the second phase is harder, but it also means you only have to learn one phase.
@@18Krieger he was banished for speaking up against nashandra, he had his suspicions about her. Velstadt was opposed to that, instead chosing to blindly follow Vendrick's orders. It was then settled that they would fight each other, the one who lost would be exiled. Raime was then exiled, and I'd say he holds respect for him, since they were brothers in arms. He sees you as a real threat when you walk in there with his helmet, so he chooses to fight you at his full power.
@@panna7241, was the reason even stated? Like at all? If so, where does it?
@@DefinitelyFroggyDioBrando It makes the fight harder because of the 2nd phase punishment potential, he hits way harder and is more of a threat than with the first phase
I love Raime's death animation: he looks at his hand and screams is distinct agony and - I like to think - sadness, knowing he'll not see his beloved queen again, and then collapses on his knees, just like Velstadt. Poetic.
And to think the race of giants ( not stone like actual tall giants) live for a long ass time like for hundreds of years that’s what I like to think imagine being him seeing the end of his days
His death scream is hardly a scream even, more of a wail of sadness and pain knowing he failed to defend person who he truly loved. I legitimately haven't felt this bad about killing a boss since sif in ds1
I think he kinda says : Nadalia? Noooo
Surprised that you didn't mention he was considered a 'traitor' for being RIGHT. He wanted only to protect Vendrick from Nashandra, who was indeed everything he said she was, but was defeated in combat and subsequently banished even though he was correct the whole time.
Then to fall at the hands of another "nashandra"
@@aclosh2983 he let himself fall to darkness like his once comrade Velstadt but unlike Velstadt where even after being taken by the dark he still stuck to his duty in protecting Vendrick Raime let it consume him completely losing himself in his new found love for the dark queen that took him in
"Why are you booing me, I'm right!"
@@aclosh2983 At least Nadalia returned his feelings in a genuine way. I mean, she literally gave Raime a fragment of her own soul inside his great sword for a reason.
"his FRIEND velstadt." ah yes, nothing spells friendship as much as a sudden burst of murderous intent at the mere sight of a piece of armor from your friend.
Always got that like a sign of "you killed the man i respected the most, prepare to die"
I feel like wanting to kill someone who killed your friend is pretty standard in fiction, actually.
@@aclosh2983 Raim amd velstadt fought eachother and velstadt beat him and exiled him. They are not friends
@@Ahhhhh638 respect and friend are very different Edit: nvm i just read the comment above
Velstadt decided to stick with his King no matter what decision he made while Raime tried to call out the foolish destructive path their king was taking them down at the advice of their queen.
Also fun detail with Raime, his shield where you find the key for the dlc's gate states "he threw away his shield when he was banished, and the insignia of a raven is the knights favorite bird" He just really likes ravens, love birds too man
He has a shield!?!
@@RustieAsf Rebel's Greatshield
@@voraito wait, have i been using his shield against him this entire time?
@@natanaelalbertoeusebiomato526 Pretty cool coincidence. Similar to Artorias' Cleansing Greatshield from previous game, Raime's shield has some of the best elemental resistances of all shields making it useful to block his own dark and fire damage. It becomes even better when you pair it with Raime's ring, Baneful Bird Ring to take much less stamina damage from blocking.
@@voraito bruh he has a ring
Velstadt: Loyal to daddy Vendrick Raime: Loyal to burned waifu
Pay close attention to Raime when you defeat him. A little hard to notice, but when you defeat him, he has fire erupting from the upper part of his body, as if Nadalia's power was leaving his body. We hear him scream, "No...! NO!! .....Nadalia...", perhaps not just out of rage from losing to an Undead, but of outrage of Nadalia's power leaving him alone one last time. I read somewhere that the Fume Knight's name in the Japanese version is, "Smoke Knight", and that smoke in Japanese legends signified corruption, perhaps what was the ultimate fate of Raime.
I love that Raime preceded weapons were his great sword and tower shield which he discarded when he was banished. The Raven motif still there and makes his armor shape and colors so awesome together. And that his hatred of Velstadt still burns so strong that if you come in wearing just Velstadts armor he immediately switches to phase 2. Dark souls 2 truly did such an awesome job story telling
From what other comments have said, you only need Velstadt's helmet for him to skip to phase 2
@@NickAsNickName probably true but I wore the whole set cause smexy drip
Fume Knight is also a master class in technical boss design. His arena encourages exploration to negate the healing effect. His moveset isn't overly complicated and is well telegraphed. He mixes slow and fast attacks depending on your position or if you're using items. I always felt like I deserved my loss. He never did any massive one hit kill attack where he shot lasers from the sky and was untouchable. It was always a move I'd seen before and I messed up the timing or was being greedy. I felt like the boss respected me. Add the lore, thematic elements and music and you have easily one of the top 5 bosses in all of FROMSOFT.
According to metrics he is THEE most lethal Dark Souls boss with the highest player kill ratio. Probably after including elden ring too but it will have to be a while before there is a large enough population sample to compare Malenia to Fume Knight due to him being around longer.
@@tenjenkreally? Not saying youre lying but is there a source for that?
@@LOLquendoTV it was from From Software's own metrics and statistics report. He had a 93% lethality rate.
@@tenjenk huh, nice
@@tenjenk is this just Dark Souls or all of the Fromsoft games?
You can also notice his greatsword was once a regular bladed sword but is now encased in volcanic rock. It almost looks like the mold for a sword with a handle stuck into it.
He was exiled when he tried to call out Nashandra's true nature and her aim to covet the throne for herself. Velstadt didn't care if it was true. Nashandra was Queen that's all he needed to know. They were both loyal knights, but Raime was exiled for treachery. When he stumbled upon brume tower he found another Child of Dark. But this one wept for her king's passing, one whom she never even met. This must have struck a cord with him having lost his own king, even if to different circumstances. According to his weapon description, Raime had "the ability to expunge the black fog, but chose to live alongside it, in company of the child of dark that haunts his sword." Like the remnants of Nadalia around Brume Tower a part of her Soul lingers in his sword, which we obtain by using his soul. Even if only a fragment, a part of her was with him, be it just his sword or his actual soul. Not to mention the 3 over fragments that can heal him throughout the fight. In someway she provides him with strength, whether she does this knowingly or not is unclear. After he's defeated we find he defends a figure long dead. A corpse sitting atop a throne, both long turned to ash. We can collect the Old Iron King's Crown. He defends a long dead King along side a child of Dark. As stated in the video he suffers the same fate as Velstadt, but unlike him Raime chose this fate out of love. Velstadt stands strong, alone, warding off the dark to defend a king long since Hollowed. Raime defends the corpse of the Old Iron King but he in some small way, is kept company by the one who gave him a new purpose and a new life.
I know you don't talk about the gameplay much, but it's also interesting that the Fume Knight's weapons when you get them have a very particular move set, the Fume Greatsword does nothing but vertical slams when one handed, which makes it pair amazingly well with an off-hand weapon like say a straight sword that has nothing but horizontal swipes like the Fume Straight Sword
I like the story around Raime that gets told over multiple item descriptions. Most of it was already present before the DLC dropped.
Like what?
@@RustieAsfThe Rebel greatshield, I believe veldstats armor aswell
@@yourusualsevagoth863 It's his hammer chime that mentions Raime.
Isn't there a lore implication that raime tried to warn Vendrick about nashandra but was exiled and deemed a traitor ?
Oh yes
I think that Fume Knight may actually be my favorite boss design in dark souls
I mean hes a great boss in a game of generally mediocre/bad fights
This dude kicked my ass more then the haligtree rotten lass did from Elden ring.
Fume ultra great sword is my favorite in both DS2 & 3.
How did velstadt beat this absolute unit
I like how the background video is mostly someone just floundering, failing dodges and missing a hit during an opening
I love it when Fume Knight says it’s “It’s Fuming Time” and then Fumes all over the place.
I haven't played a second of this game, but these shorts are just so interesting. I always look forward to whatever you make, TB Skyen.
Bro, it's like having a big present under the Christmas tree and never opening it. Do you know what the average souls player would give to experience it for the first time again? Open the present!
He was originally a Tank build but he traded his greatshield out for the Fume Greatsword. Dps hit different.
I feel an important note is that raime left/was banished because he didn't trust nashandra since he was loyal to vendrick the person over the king, yet he ends up with in the hands of another child of dark
He initially intended to slay her but saw she was pure hearted unlike nashandra and had lost her purpose/duty to her king much like himself
“Fromsoft games don’t have good story or dialogue” -some american game producers
one of my favourite boss fights from the entire series, I lost so much that I decided to respec and finally level up adaptability lmao
Fun fact if you enter the boss room wearing full velsait armor fume knight will start the fight in phase two.
You only need the helmet
@@natanaelalbertoeusebiomato526 oh I’ve always used the full set, but I guess that does make sense
"Commiting fully to his greatsword... Unless the Bearer of the Curse carefully chucks throwing knives at him, in which case he sort of forgets."
Love how you also have two swords and switch to one at the end
probably the best fight in dark souls 2
christ he kicked my ass around more than any other dark souls trilogy boss. Such a varied move set with more than a few that initially start the same. He even delays some attacks mid swing to throw your timing off.
Noah Caldwell-Gervais makes an excellent point in his Dark Souls video about Raime being analogous (but NOT congruous) to Artorias from DS1; a greatsword wielding noble knight, formerly the right hand of the king, corrupted by extraneous abyssal power, waiting for the player to put him out of his misery. DS2 does frame a lot of its lore with explicitly romantic love, which neither 1 nor 3 really get into. I kinda like the distant Buddhist approach to character relations in 1 and 3, but the Fume Knight is an excellent example of how a small side story involving love (a la Lancelot and Guinevere) can be done really well in a souls game. Probably also my favourite character design from this game too 😅
Is he really waiting to die? Why does he fight so hard then?
@@QuantumTelephone Artorias was driven mad by the power of Manus' wild Humanity.
@@kingdomcome3914 I mean the fume knight
I love that you read it Vel(sh)tadt instead of usual Vel(s)tadt
Imagine having enough smelter wedges and not being forced to stay on one side of the arena the whole time (still my favorite ds2 boss though)
This is actually one of the hardest bosses in any Soulsborne game, it has the most recorded wins against players of any boss.
Honestly, this guy's my favorite boss fight in the Dark Souls series. I tend to grind as much as I can in a video game to have a reasonable or stress frew boss fight. But for this guy, even if I did that, I still had to work very hard to learn his moves and not die out of panic or greed.
Fume knight met his fate by a man strafing and poking him with a rapier over and over again.
aaand he's left handed ☝️🤓
When ever you try healing from a distance he will immediately charge towards you but if you just stand there he will approach you slowly. I believe he has serious problems with Estus flask
Ultra great sword but I'll live
Fume Knight Raime is such a cool character that I hope all the new members of the soulsborne community come to appreciate.
I cannot wait until you do Dark Souls 3.
Fume knight of dark souls 3 is the bane of my existence.
I thought him and Velstadt were brothers and he kicked him out for being right so the rage he feels when you have velstadts armor is both rage and sadness that his brother is dead and you dare strut in wearing it to challenge him
I think Raine is behind the old ironclads coming to save the day during the giant war,
I cant wait for you to cover Alsanna if you havent done so already
My favorite boss in DS2. Also, he tried to steer Vendrick in the right direction, but was defeated by Velstadt, and cast out for supposed opposition to the king.
That is a real boss fight. Short arena and his hit boxes were ridiculous
Fume knight will always be my favorite boss in the dark souls series.
Love this boss so much. No roll spam, no estus chug spam, no magic or pyro cheese. Just pure physical damage. Yes, the only way to beat him is to draw your sword.
It's really ironic how Raime went on a quest with the intention to overthrow Nashandra but ended up exactly like Vendrick, with a "sister" of Nashandra even.
POV: You didn't level ADP
Raime sees the opposite of what he saw in Nashandra, Nashandra ruined the kings kingdom, but Nadalia (Nashandra's sister) despite not even seeing the Iron Kings Kingdom in its glory days or even it's king himself, decided to stay and protect the kingdom, exactly how Raime the Ravens personality is, Velstad was loyal to the king but Raime was loyal to the kingdom. Raime was a real one! 🖤 ALSO another cool story telling is how Raime used a shield before he was defeated, he lets go of the shield and grabs a greatsword when he finds the Iron kingdom. My interpretation is that Raime, when he leaves Vendricks kingdom in search of more power so he can come back and defeat Velstad and save the kingdom from ruin and darkness, he finds the Iron Kingdom, saw it was in ruin, showing the inevitable future that is to come to Vendricks kingdom because of Natasha, so he lets go of his shield (before or after he reaches the Iron kingdom) and grabs the greatsword from Nadalia because he no longer cares about death, he no longer fears death, he rather die to protect what little he has left to love rather than living to see the outcome of what ruin is there to come.
All Hail the Simp Knight!
Yeah so I actually went with the Wear velstadts helmet trick to jump right into phase 2 Then quickly re equipped a good helmet for fire defence Saves you having to memorise 2 different patterns and it made the fight much easier At least for me anyway
DS2 has the best story istg
Dark Souls Lore 👌👹
More adaptability please.
Tell my the Capra demon is the worst though because I’ve spent like four hours, just trying to beat him!
Please cover Berserk before I die. That's all I ask.
Ohhh so you were cosplaying as Fume Knight!
Da king is back baby he neva miss
Interesting to know that the reason why Fume Knight was exiled... was because he was correct about a conspiracy against Vendrick. It's not quite right to say he is disloyal. Raime was indeed very loyal... but to the kingdom, not the king. He saw Nashandra for the threat she is, and when Velstadt heard this, with his blind loyalty to Vendrick (and thus the queen, Nashandra), he thus found it unacceptable. Raime and Velstadt fought, Velstadt won, and Vendrick believed in strength above all... so Raime's claims were discarded. Raime was an amazing man of loyalty and honor. But where Velstadt fell to blind loyalty, Raime fell to, perhaps, blind love. Like Artorias, I believe Raime was consumed by his failure. He sought comfort after such a bitter dejection, and Nadalia waved a carrot on a stick. Raime, like Artorias, is one of my most favorited characters in FromSoft lore.
The player in the used footage needs to level adp tbh
I mean val and raim are brothers and wearing the helmet of val will make him enraged because you killed his brother
i love ds2
Ah yes the dark simp😉
Greetings! Preiss algorithm gods!
Damn you really need to level up adp
You got hit on every dodge
How can you swong a straight sword and an (ultra?)greatsword together?
Velstadt was cake compared to Fume Knight. I've only bested this boss once pre-DLC. Got demolished 20 times fighting on my son's 1st DLC playthrough to help him. Neither of us could figure out his weakness. The NPC's die within 5 minutes. Fun but challenging AF.
The fact that you pronounced "Velstadt" in a german manner but chose to say "Raim" instead of [R a i m e] drives me to a blind rage.
you got hit so much lol
Really hate how these are condensed into shorts
It’s cute my algorithm thinks I’ll play this game
But if he tosses his straightsword in the second phase, why must I use his soul to get the blade? Why can't I just pick it up from the ground? If he tosses it, it should realistically still be laying on the ground. But since you need his soul to get the sword, my guess is that in the phase transition the sword gets actually shattered/rendered unusable in some way
I mean, mytha uses a spear, and her head to do damage but for some reason you get a dagger out of her soul. Or the butcher's knife suddenly gaining the ability to steal life when it's not in the hands of the rotten. Or the Dragonrider bow only shooting greatarrows in the hands of the black Dragonrider in the Dragonrider duo bossfight
@@MamaTrixxieAsmr exactly
If we talk ds2 lore, do we generally tall og ds2? Or scholar of the first sin ds2. Cause i have still the original
Dude needs a little more adaptability to roll through them attacks... all of those should have been I framed.
I mean not charred his armour has always been black and represents a crow
That's all very cool and interesting but please level up ADP
This gameplay in the background is driving me nuts. Cat helmet with the Faraam armor, and he's clearly left handing the a greatsword and a small straight sword to emulate the fume knight, albeit badly.. and on top of that, I don't think he's had a single successful roll and I'm halfway through the short, and he's NOT ATTACKING... if you want background footage, just go fight the dude. Don't do this unnecessary nonsense 😂
fuckign hated the fume knight this was an enduracne fight damn
Deadliest boss in the franchise according to fromsofts metrics. The thing is, he has a lot of different attacks, and many of them share the same wind up or starting move. Ontop of which the maneuver to dodge one combo set leaves you open to the other potential combos he might do instead. He even slows his wind up on certain attacks to throw your timing off. An idea they used in elden ring with some advancements.
One of the few good bosses in DS2
It hurts watching your gameplay, but I enjoy the voice
is this your own gameplay???
Lovely commentary, but you should really level ADP
lvl that adp
Average DS2 hater game play
There were less bosses in Ds 2 and 1 in comparison to Elden ring but imho they were way better. Didn't like a single one from Elden ring and they weren't very memorable for me, plus they didn't have a good emotional build up before you met them. I only remember their names because of how much it's repeated in every dialogue.
A bezerk soulsbourn game would sell billions of copies
Well is dark souls you dont really have time to listen to them talking xD
Why Is the guy playing in the background so bad at the game?
