  • Great video. One point to make though. The leading edges of the wings are rubber deicing boots, they would not be weathered with chipped paint. They would stay black or rubber in colour. These rubber deicing boots appeared on the B-17, B-24, B-29 and C-47 and C-54

    • Many cammo B-17s in Europe also had these removed too. There's footage of an out of control B-17 in cammo, in a spin, and the bare metal L/E is reflecting.@@ultralowfat

    • @@machmodels Came here to say this too, FYI, de-icing boots are still in use today - the ATR-42 ATR-72 and Dash 8 are among some aircraft using this method.

    • @@MillwalltheCat You can see deice boots on the B-17, B-24, B-29 and C-47 and C-54. I imagine the twin engine B types could have them or not depending on how they were ordered. These were rubber pneumatic boots.

  • A 18:40 the 'metal reveal' chipping shouldn't be there. The black strips are pneumatic de-icing boots, which are cycled to make a 'creeping' surface to break off ice deposits and safeguard the aerodynamics. The aircraft wouldn't be signed off as fit to fly with the boots inoperative and puncture repair patches can sometimes be seen on boots at full scale. Hope this helps - otherwise an excellent model.

I built a Revell B-24 kit back in the early 1970s (as a young teen) and recall that the details of the interior were basically non-existent, except for some bits and pieces in the cockpit. BTW...I enjoyed the Mosquito build :)

It’ll probably be my next kit purchase. Haven’t seen one in stock yet in the states though, at least not wildly overpriced for a 1/72 kit anyway ($70 usd). The detail is such I wouldn’t mind paying up to $30 - 40 though.

  • Really good model. Note for accurately depicting the leading edge, I believe that the b24 was equipped with pneumatic boots. Much like modern aircraft this is a rubber sleeve on the leading edge that can be inflated to dislodge any ice formation. These boots where made from rubber, so wouldn’t really have any chipping. (Feel free to correct me) hope that helps with any future builds

  • I found this video by chance on google. I am very pleased to be subscribed to you now. I think your process and video explanation was so helpful. I like how patient you were with the airbrush. I will definitely try your methods. When fitting the finished sub assemblies, you mention cementing. What do you use and do you remove paint at the attachment points? I have the 1/48 hobby boss kit and only hope to do it half as nice. Thanks for sharing

    • I don't know if all b24s had de icing boots.. I guess you have to research what plane you are doing...if ur into that kinda thing...in the end it's your model..just be prepared for the experts to come out of the wood works if you post to social media... All I know I did a B26 and chipped the leading edges on the wing like you did and got my ass reamed by the experts......until I posted a pic of the exact plane that I was depicting that had no deicing boots. All in all nice job.

  • The only problem I see with the execution of the kit, and it does detract, is the leading edge of the wings, tailplane, and rudders are deicing boots. There would not be the chipping of paint with these boots. If the boots were removed for combat, the base color was the color of the wing, in this case olive drab. Yes, that is picking of nits, but an important detail. Over all, I really liked this build

  • I would have attached the nose sections to each of the fuselage halves, not as two sparate sub-assemblies. It can be troublesome in fit following the kit instructions (Case in point being the Revell/Monogram Ju88A that had an issue with that area - and the wingtips).

  • Hey:) Great job on your B-24... i think that you made a small mistake (but i am not 100% sure): The leading edge should stay black as these were actually rubber parts glued on the metal leading edge. Very nice work non the less. Cheers

  • That new tooling is like several levels over the old 1960’s one. Great build. Question: Did they even keep the rubber de-icing boots once the boxcars were in a warzone?

    @farkinarkin5099@farkinarkin509923 күн бұрын
    • Thank you very much! I believe from my understanding that they where in fact kept in the war zone, I might’ve been a tad inaccurate chipping them to bits😂

    • @@machmodels You are correct! After looking at various combat damaged B-24s, many still have the rubber boots. As far as the “chipping”… whose to say it wasn’t from a maintenance guy trying to remove the strips? You could always mask it off and repaint with a lovely brownish-black (even pure black if the ground crew were diligent in applying some sort of refinish) … or buy more Airfix B-24s and treat us to another fantastic build - NMF!!!

  • Rivets and fine panel lines on a 1/72 airfix model? Let's see if they maintain this level of detail for their next plane. I never really liked the lack of finesse of detail on recent models, with those basic, disproportionate panel lines. Very good job, this model deserved love and care.

  • Hi very nice build! I'm kind of confused about the Olive Drab paint process. Did you use the Mr Color Middlestone directly on the model or did you mix it to the olive drab to fade the color? Thanks!

    @slslsl76@slslsl7621 күн бұрын
    • Thank you very much! Apologies, the middle stone was added to the olive drab to create a hybrid colour and “fade” the olive drab😉😄

  • Excellent job on the build. Looks AMAZING! The only little characteristic that I don’t like, and it’s not anything to do with your work at all, is the landing gear in the extended position. It looks like the plane sits too high off the ground, too much room between the belly and the ground. In reality, I don’t believe the ball turret could be fully extended on the ground. Years ago, I had a 72 scale Liberator and it did the same thing. I always thought it looked inaccurate. The 48 scale Libs were more accurate in this case. Congrats on the build either way! Speaking of 48 scale Liberators, will you be building the new tool kit at all?? Keep up the great work! Cheers!!!
