Bob and Rosa Swart, retired nature enthusiasts, recently had this once-in-a-lifetime experience in Kruger National Park and shared it with LatestSightings.com.
"We were out on our daily drive when we spotted three cheetahs in the dry Shingwedzi river bed outside the camp gate. Despite the intense heat, the cheetahs were alert and focused on something in the riverbed. We waited for over an hour until a group of waterbucks approached, including some youngsters."
Cheetahs are known for their speed and agility, making them successful hunters. They can run up to 75 miles per hour in short bursts, allowing them to catch prey quickly. They rely on their eyesight to spot prey from a distance and use their speed to ambush them.
"Suddenly, one of the cheetahs slunk off into the bush, and the other two sprang into action, chasing the waterbucks. Success at last! One of the cheetahs managed to catch a waterbuck, and the rest of the cheetahs joined in."
"All the commotion created a lot of interest, and the crocodiles that were basking in the sun on the edges of the remaining pools of water began approaching. The cheetahs tried to stand their ground and began hissing at the crocodiles."
"The crocodiles eventually intimated the cheetahs, and they sprinted off away from their meal. A total of 12 crocodiles appeared and went for the waterbuck carcass. However, in the end, only the largest crocodile remained at the carcass, surrounded by vultures and other scavenging birds."
Crocodiles are not often considered scavengers. They are known to actively hunt their own prey rather than scavenge from other animals that have already been caught. Crocodiles will feed on almost anything they can catch, including fish, birds, and mammals.
The Swarts advise fellow nature enthusiasts to drive slowly and be considerate of other visitors in the park. With the right attitude and a little bit of luck, anyone can have a memorable experience in Kruger National Park.

More like fear of crocodiles - and for that matter, _water_ - is pretty much genetic in most African land animals. The scaly river monsters are *that* dangerous to life and limb.

Crocs can and will try to dispute kills with entire lion prides when the mood strikes them.
Needed to move the antelope much further from the water given the steady progress of those crocs. Cheetah were never going to intimidate the crocs.
But I think according to the strength of the 1:1 fight, the crocodile will win. Now it's up to their abilities and intelligence
This reminded me of the tortoise and the hare. The croc may have been slow but he was committed. He’s even got armor like the tortoise, and the cheetahs are fast like the hare. The only major difference is that the hare was overconfident and the cheetahs here were lacking confidence 😂

Crocs are such a threat to life and limb much African land life is reflexively terrified of going into water, and apes born and raised in captivity without ever seeing a live one are congenitally afraid of small toy ones. Cheetahs? They live and die by their ability to run fast and duly can afford to risk injury even less than most. Also very poorly equipped to contest kills with anything even close to their size.
It's the teeth of the croc the cheetahs are scared of. Cheetahs are delicate and built for speed, and the crocs; they don't let go. But I like your analogy, such is nature, you don't always have to be fast to win the race

I don't understand why they didn't pull the prey the three of them together to move fast enough to scape the crocodile. Also made me think about such a trade off it is to forsake more muscles in exchange of more speed. Not that good.
Imagine being the fastest land animal and letting a reptile that’s slow on land steal your kill.
Its like having a gun and still losing in a knife fight.
The carcass doesn't run with you, after all. So your choices are to stand and fight over it (not a good idea here) or give way and write it off as a loss. It's kind of comparable how once humans started putting down roots as settled agriculturalists they also needed to start devising ways to fight would-be takers off it. There's a reason leopards bring their meals up to trees when one is available.

A once in a lifetime-sighting! Awesome! In 2012, I was lucky to witness a cheetah kill in the Shingwedzi riverbed at Kanniedood Hide, just south of the camp. However, the three cheetahs could enjoy an undisturbed meal until 50+ vultures took over.

These aren’t particularly large crocodiles, they just appear large next to the smaller cheetahs.
They are both teens not even close to fully grown, they looks around 2.5m and 2m respectively
A literal case of "you can run, but you can't hide"
I heard years ago that the cheetah was doomed to extinction because it is too specialized. Built for high speed and not much else, it can not keep the animals it kills. Leopards would haul that meal up into a tree, and lions can fight off other competitors. The cheetah has to be careful not to get injured or it will die. Hope this is wrong 😮

Which is why that branch of cats is now extinct and the more versatile ones do pretty well aside from humans screwing them over.
It's no more "doomed to extinction" than any highly specialised species. But heightened vulnerability to extinction in case of environmental disruptions is an universal tax those have to pay for lack of competition within their narrow niche (compare eg. the giant panda).

This was like a farcical comedy, the way the cheetahs keep moving the impala only for the slow moving but persistent croc to catch up with them again, the mini me sidekicks of the main croc trailing along behind. All thats missing is a laugh track.

That's to some extent excusable, given the constraints imposed by KNP rules & regs (you're restricted to a very limited road network, etc). However, the first rule of wildlife filming applies everywhere and at all times: keep your trap shut. Dead simple, yet for some reason incredibly hard for so many. Those with Attenborough ambitions can alway add pertinent narration afterwards when editing the footage.

One would think that cheetahs gave to too easily, but the truth is that crocs ' bites win against the cheetahs, because even if the croc would get a bite from a cheetah, their body scales are too tough, so they are tankier anyway, so they would win bite vs bite.

The cheetahs had the right idea to drag the kill further inland. Unfortunately, they either weren't smart enough to continue doing so, or they have less stamina than a croc on land.
Cheetahs aren't particularly strong - they're specialised in speed - and tend to be left more or less winded after hunts; it can take them up to an hour to fully recover from a particularly strenuous chase. And crocs have no particular stamina issues on land.

For those who want to know : cheetahs used all their energy to hunt their prey. Most of the time they just bring it to a tree to be safe, recovering and eat. But this one was too big and they didn't had enought strengh recovering to pull this big prey under this hot weather. Croc are cold blood so they getting stronger when its hot and can track prey without fetting too tired.
That's not how ectothermy works; environmental temperature dictates the _level of activity_ they're capable of - eg. a commonly witnessed case in point, frogs and snakes getting more and more sluggish and eventually incapable of moving at all as winter approaches and temperatures drop. Which is why they need to seek cover to hibernate in. In African daytime heat they of course have no problems whatsoever. _Endotherms_ ("warm-blooded" animals) OTOH have major overheating issues especially with intense exercise that produces extra metabolic heat, which is one reason many carnivores in such climates prefer hunting at night. It's a particularly acute problem for cheetahs given their hunting technique; it can take them up to an hour to fully cool down and recover after a chase.
Also leopards are the ones who drag their prey into trees to eat, cheetahs do not have the strength to do this

Crocodiles most certainly are scavengers. For starters, they commonly scavenge from other crocodiles. A kill by one will attract all the others in the vicinity, all vying to tear chunks off the victim. They will also eat other dead crocs, or anything else they can lay their jaws on. Moreover, crocodiles have an acute sense of smell, and can pick up the scent of blood from a considerable distance. I recall finding a lion kill by following the tracks of a large crocodile that had headed inland from the Luvuvhu River. Despite its size, the three lions had no difficulty seeing the croc off.
Ya, they definitely aren't picky eaters. It's theorised that ability and willingness to scavenge carrion was one factor that tided their ancestors over the massive but transient ecological disruptions of the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event, and it certainly isn't a quality that hurts one's survival prospects in general.

If they could have kept dragging the carcass into the brush the crocs may have went back. A bite from a croc could seriously injure one of them. Too bad they lost it but they seem like good hunters. They will kill again and hopefully eat in peace.
As far as I know crocodiles quickly overheat when they move on land. Therefore I ask myself why the cheetahs didn't try to fight off the crocs until they give up...

Imagine losing your food to an animal that you can outpace just by casually walking away with your food. We're truly witnessing the self extinction of a species. Also one of the dumbest, largest predators to have evolved in their manor.
The food doesn't run with them. That's the cost of highly specialising in a niche whose requirements leave you ill equipped to fight off rivals. And, yes, such niches are rather extinction-prone in the face of environmental disruptions that the versatile generalists can weather without too much trouble. (Worth remembering that crocodile ancestors were among the very few large animals of the time that made it through the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event.)
