  • As someone who has gone on no-buys and low-buys, watch yourself very hard for transference. When I stopped buying makeup, I started buying skincare. When I figured it out and stopped buying skincare, I was hyper-fixating on scrapbooking. I personally do very well with a limited budget. Instead of telling myself absolutely not and potentially rebelling, I have to decide whether or not buying something is worth my limited budget.

    • I did the same thing. I went on a makeup low buy and the next thing I knew my stationary supplies had magically increased. 😅

  • Every time I get into a hobby, I rush to "buy all the things" before I actually settle into USING all the things! I know I have done that with notebooks and covers, washi and stickers, cross-stitch patterns and fabric. Watching videos on these things also takes a considerable amount of time away from actually enjoying the hobby! So, I am with you on spending less time on line and more time journaling, reading, learning, and completing projects! I also have to buy my eldest a car, so I have to be more conscientious about spending, which shouldn't be difficult because I have so much to use up! You will do great in 2024!

  • This is the video I've been looking for. I'm also going to do a no-buy year for stationery. I've also been unsubscribing from emails and hiding ads on social media. I haven't been watching haul videos either. I'm really excited for you and am looking forward to following along. I now feel like I have a buddy to cheer on and do this with. Go us!

  • Hi, I loved your video and I'm with you on this journey. I'm a 60 year old woman getting ready for retirement and I need to start downsizing my possessions and my spending. As a woman of faith, I turn to scriptures for support. My favorite for this issue is Psalm 119:37: "Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way" (NKJV). My word of the year for 2024 is Stewardship. I need to be a better steward of the blessings I have received, I need to stay focused on what's important and to not be distracted by the pretty shiny things of the world. I will keep that verse and my WOTY in my planner so I see them every day. I will ask myself, "Do I want this thing more than I want to be a better steward?" That helps me keep things in perspective. Thanks for your video and keep them coming - for all of us!

  • Me too. I only need to pay bills and food. That is it this year. I knew the Pandemic would be a 3 year ordeal (read a book on the 1918 Spanish flu) anyway I told my husband we have 3 years to save for a car. We did and we bought it cash. WE CAN DO THIS! I’m going to follow along with your journey. Please share your tips!

  • My word of the year is “contentment.” You echoed my spending habits. It’s like emotional eating only spending. When I am happy, sad, worried……I love your plan and how you wrote your intentions out. We are a big family as well. We have 6 kids still at home and clutter and the desire to have all the things is weighing heavy. Unsubscribing to our favorite stationary emails is great. I need to stop KZhead and instagram. I do not have a healthy relationship. I see and I want. Like a kid in the candy store. 😒. I really appreciate you sharing your struggles. I bet more people can relate than not. Anyhoo~ here’s to a no spend/low spend 2024! WE CAN DO IT!!👊🏻

  • I am planning to do a "no buy" for 6 months of this year. The other 6 months will be "low buy" - BUT - I cannot buy anything for the first 14 days of the "low buy" months. That gives me a smaller window to spend money and more time to really think about what I want before I buy. Well....that is the plan - wish me luck! 😉

  • I have to do a no buy for books until I read all the books in my stack. Crochet is very satisfying. I picked up this hobby a couple of months ago and it's fun. And I agree; it's easy to get carried away.: I went through an initial phase of buying hooks and yarns but stopped myself after the third hook and decided I'll only buy yarn when I finish a project and plan a new one. Plus it's fun tracking progress and writing down chain details etc. in my Weeks.

  • Hello, I have same plans for 2024. In 2023 I was doing quite well regarding my shopping habits but after I needed to stay in bed due to an accident (basically for a few months) I did eventually started to do too much shopping and things got out of control. In the past I did keep that list “things I wanted to buy but I didn’t“ and for me was very inspiring to see how much money I did actually kept in my wallet. Like you said I’m expecting to “suffer” quite a bit in the first weeks of 2024 as I’m not used to say no to myself 😅

Im addicted to shopping too specially planners, stickers, washi, mugs, handbags, books, video games and about anything i find at Temu etc. i was looking for some more inspiration for this year, ive been organizing the apartment and found so much forgotten stash. Im not buying anything and if i falter i have to give up one thing i already have. Hope you share how it works out for you!! Wising you the best of luck.

    • I suggest looking into some anti-temu videos! I bought some things from them last year when I got my first planner. Then I learned their coding is eerily close to a virus-along with the fact they had previously made an app that was just a straight virus.

  • Hi Sam! I've been watching your videos for a few years now and thought I'd comment FINALLY! I am a busy "working" mom of 4 kiddos, married to a husband who's out half the year on business travels. I, myself, travel quite a lot throughout the year as well. In terms of wanting to go minimal and reduce emotional buying-- I AM HERE WITH YOU. I moved to a complete new state to intentionally slow down (career) and spend more time with my family 6 years ago. My first year was rough! I really had no idea what it was like to be put in the same home as my kiddos with a husband who's out half the year and being a 100% mom while working from home all at the same time. I had 3 nannies working with me throughout motherhood before this, so it was tough. But I didn't move all this way to give up. We were going to make it work! SO.. this was when I started going back to my "anxious planning/journaling", learning how to budget for the first time, AND practicing minimalism. Let me tell you.. 6 years later, these 3 things were the best learned out of all my education, career, and LIFE! You've got this!! Praying and cheering for you, mama!! ♥

  • You can do it! It’d be nice if a friend could pick items to your liking and visa versa and send you a care package through out the year. It would only cost a couple dollars postage and everyone would get new to you stuff. Only doing this say three times a year! Just an idea~ yes, I have so much stuff that I literally can’t get in my office. And if I do find something, most likely it’s too old to use. Such stickers that don’t stick any longer, dried up markers or pens, high liters and on and on. So for me, I’d love you to check back in once a month or so and let us know how you’re doing with this and any new tips or tricks you’ve learned ! Thanks for this video and follow ups to come. I’m not buying anything that I just don’t need and I just really don’t need anything so this is good and refreshing to see that others are the same page. Wishing you the best keep us updated as to how you’re doing And I think this is going to be a good year as people start reimagining and rethinking how they’re using their planners. They’re using their planners for and really slimming down on the over buying of all the things. Good luck to you.

It would really interesting at the end of next year to see the total amount on your things you didn’t buy list vs the amount of any little slips in the no buy (if there are any). Lots of inspiration in this video.

  • Before I was diagnosed with inattentive ADHD 6 years ago I moved from one thing to the next at a whim. Collecting all the supplies and stuff never thinking that this interest might not be a forever thing. Some interests absorbed me for years, others for months but there was always the next obsession on the horizon. My last unchecked obsession was planner stuff. I’ve always loved pretty paper and pens. My hyperfocus allows me to deep dive into anything. Even now that I’m aware of my tendencies and know better it’s all too easy to fall down the rabbit hole before I pull myself back out. What has helped me is to set goals and use rewards along the way so I have to “earn” that dopamine hit. For example, finish 5 knitting projects before I can start a new one or plan every day for 2 weeks and then I can spend XX/buy something off my wish list. I had a closet full of clothes that I was meh about. I made a vow to stop buying clothing that I didn’t love to wear. If it doesn’t make it me feel good when I put it on or if it doesn’t fit my body right now (not falling for the dream of future weight loss) I don’t buy it. Sure, I slip sometimes but this mindset has helped me a LOT. Things on sale are my downfall and I have to keep telling myself it’s better to buy something I’ll wear over and over instead of something on sale that I don’t need or even like. I deserve to look nice! Because I always want to do all the things I try very hard to use my hyperfocus to help me. As in, for the next month I am going to focus on this thing - hobby, project, interest, health issue. The most important thing to me this month is XXXXX. Or maybe the most important thing to me this week is XXXXX. I still try and write down all the things so I don’t forget them, but I can help my anxiety by consciously setting them aside. Otherwise I hop from one thing to another and never have the satisfaction of completing something. Then I want to buy something to make me feel better. Endless cycle! Having said all of this, I’ve spent the last month falling back into bad habits and feeling defeated. So I’m inspired to start climbing out by watching your video. Thank you.

    • I have always hyper-focused but didn’t know that was a thing, or related at all to ADHD. I spent 4 years obsessed with MBTI and the enneagram. I still like it, but don’t fixate on it. I alwasy thought ADHD meant you forgot everything and were hyper. 😅

      @samplans@samplans4 ай бұрын
    • @@samplansI have inattentive ADHD as well. For me, it’s more a dysregulation…of attention, of behavior, of emotions. It’s thought to be the result of a deficiency or irregularity in dopamine production. People with ADHD often develop substance abuse and other addictions in an effort to increase that dopamine.

  • This year I did a low-buy and I had to get over the fact that there wasn't going to be anything in the mail waiting for me. That was the hardest part. But, that is when you know it's a problem....lol. Addiction to happy mail is real. I heard or read somewhere to replace a bad habit with a habit that you want to develop. Example, if I find myself on Jetpens then I need to stop scrolling and read a certain amount of pages (Because I want to read not spend). So I plan to increase my reading skills for 2024. Therefore, I plan to do a low-buy for the whole year. You are absolutely right about the amount of time thinking about what to buy or use! I probably could have been even a speed reader at this point if I took that time and applied it to good. Here's to increased reading of a good book and The Good Book (Bible) throughout 2024. Much Blessings.

I am a retired (2014) midwife forced to go on disability due to a heart condition and running out of retirement money as I have lived longer than the Drs predicted …so I do not have the ability to live as I have but I continue and lean on my husbands income and buy my hobby to feel better about so many things that bring me down…and that is not who I want to be. I am very thankful I only learned about Portland leather recently and just can not justify a purchase…but I have still been on Poshmark hoping to find a tote that wouldn’t hurt as much as a new one…UGH I just want to break the cycle of it! I am on board and look forward to being able to watch this vid as much as necessary as well as new ones. These past couple of years I have explored buying second hand for certain stuff, mostly to try things out and see if I even want to commit myself to it. Another thing I have been doing is to add something to my cart and leave it there for a couple of weeks. I find that a lot of the times when I go back to it, I dont find it as appealing. I know it can be tough at first, because that dopamine chase is a real thing, but giving myself a few days to decide on a purchase has been great. These companies love to create a lot of fake stress over it. I bought quite a lot of washi tapes and stickets this fall, so I really don’t have any need for any more purchases. Some stickers aren’t super great, but I am taking it as a learning lesson of what NOT to get and still giving myself the freedom to play around with them so I don’t let them go to waste. I am hoping that by 2025, I will have a better understanding of what stationery works best for me. Good luck on your low buy journey!

I love journals, planners and have dozens I have not used from previous years, yet I just bought two more. Thank you for this video and bringing me back to the center of my boundaries, knowing my triggers and using what I already have. Best to you in this new year!

I look forward to hearing more from the journey - how you'll use your creativity and current stash :), and the thoughts and challenges you'll face. When the going gets tough know that you'll be helping others have a healthy, wise relationship with items that are enjoyable but were never meant to be ultimately fulfilling. Blessings!

And it feels amazing. But I know that for like the next 5 years, I would not need to buy any more 😅

  • this is amazing! i just found your channel this morning and i feel like it was not a coincidence. i realized this past year, that i am easily bored with planners. or i buy them and they don't work for me. so, i bought a composition book from dollar tree and started creating my own. i allow one book for my monthly planner, while i use others for journaling, my sewing, one i take to doctor visits with info on medication changes and other issues, and one that is my reading tracker. (those don't get replaced until theyre filled) i'm committed to buying new new stickers or paper, or fancy new pens. and, if i get bored...it's only $1.25 for a new composition book :)

  • Hi, Sam! If you're looking for a crafty hobby that won't cost a ton of money, you might think about tatting. There's good content on KZhead to learn how, and the tools and supplies are simple and inexpensive. It's not like knitting/crochet where the sky's the limit for fancy fibers and luxe tools. Plastic shuttles and bobbins, simple balls of cotton thread, and the result is an exercise in mindfulness and beautiful handmade lace.

They’re a little bit more expensive at the outset, but oh my goodness they make life so much easier. and protect your wrist from carpal tunnel and issues.

  • I'm with you. I'm trying to decide if I just allow myself to keep 1 monthly sticker sub for Kolourcafe and the TCMC penpals quarterly sub. That would scratch the itch but not be too excessive. I agree though I have all planners or covers I need. I *want* a Moterm personal rings in apricot veg tan, but perhaps that's a birthday gift idea for June (I doubt I'll still be in personal rings by then!!) I'd love to see a monthly video on progress for accountability please, as that would help me stay focussed too! I think my word of the year needs to be "no" 😂 It's going to be hard for me too Sam, as I'm the same way as you. It's my reality too. 1st January, I'm with you. 💪🏼

  • Hello again, yes no buy is pretty much the way to go I also have a shopping collection "issue" it does not matter what it is but if I get into something it has to be many of the something! ;) I reminded myself these are all things I want not need so I can do without it. So I stopped purchasing planners then fountain pens and then it became easier to just watch a video without wanting to purchase whatever was being shown or unboxed and as far as being on social media I have cut that down quite a bit too. I use my TN planner which is my ole tried and true, I just get less expensive inserts on amazon when I need one. For me it was trying to fill a void and now I fill it with less useless things and more time with God, family time, exercise and home activities. What I am happy about is the time I spend reading especially the bible. Wishing you a wonderful and blessed New Year!

  • I love this so much, and I’m here cheering you on! I’m focused on doing the same in 2024 - stepping out of the shopping cycle and reminding myself daily that I have pleeeeenty of stuff to play with. I hope you keep us updated regularly - it definitely helps to hear others talk about this as we struggle through it ourselves. I can recommend a book I read this summer about this topic in general: Dopamine Nation, by Anna Lembke (you can probably find it at the library!). I think I heard about it from a podcast interview, but this book does a great job explaining what our brain is doing when we get stuck in these dopamine loops. And offers techniques for escaping them.

  • I have the same problem with spending….. I do budget planning…now I doing a no spend for the Month of January! I have so many hobbies, reading, pens colored pencils, puzzles.i would love to journal, but I am so hyper and my brain is so full of things I want to write. I just don’t think I can sit down and do it . I’ve got to find a subject or something I want to get off my mind a ride about and I don’t know which one I wanna do. But maybe watching your videos will help me to pick a subject or get organized in my mind cause it’s all out of order right now.

  • Im so happy to have watched this! The level of consumerism in the hobbies i enjoy (reading, knitting, planning) is just truly overboard, so i fully support this. Spending like this is death by a thousand cuts. Working with yarn (i knit) while listening to an audiobook is a way better replacement. I quit Reddit earlier this year and still kept picking up my phone for no reason? So now i get to listen to a book and make something cool. PS I'd recommend deleting all your virtual cards that make online shopping way too easy. If you physically have to go get the card it's a nice barrier that gives you a chance to think.

  • I call it shopping belima (rerun things when dopamine has gone). Crochet: I like the Susan bates hooks. The hook is more pronounced than the clover hooks. Sharper hook makes grabbing yarn easier. They also have a bamboo handle. I like the crochet crowd on YT. I mostly make blankets and newest passion is corner to corner. Patterns are easily to find. Some people like patters that change every row. While it makes a beautiful blanket, I want a pattern that repeats. I call it mindless brainless. I do it for relaxation so I don’t want to be glued to a pattern every row. I like red heart softie yarn. Regular red hart is scratchy and hurts hands while crocheting it softens up after you wash it, but not when working with it Yes only buy yarn per project. I have 3 bookshelves full of yarn…rainy day yarn. You might not like the feel of it. I started with a brand but have moved on. Hope this helps.

  • I'm excited for you and I believe you'll do great with your No Buy! It's clear that you've thought through potential triggers and other vulnerabilities that may make it difficult. Self awareness and mindfulness are key to a successful No Buy challenge. Part of that is having a big "why" that you can always go back to when times get tough. I also think the "why" shifts your internal monologue from negative to positive. Instead of thinking, "Why can't I have that? I'm so sad to be missing out on this thing," it can really help to instead think, "I've chosen a more important purpose for my money and time. I'm in control and saying no." A No Buy's positive effects extend beyond having more money in your pocketbook. For me, they literally free my brain from the stress of agonizing about browsing and buying the next shiny thing. I've gained so much leisure time that I can spend on more enjoyable and relaxing things, like reading. I wish you the best and am in your corner! You got this!
