Buckeye is a 2ft /600mm gauge locomotive that was built in 1935 by Orenstein & Koppel in Berlin, Germany and was used to shunt cars for a series of mining interests in Southern Africa, the last being a Chromium Mine on the Selukwe Peak Light Railway in what was then Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). In the 1960s it was donated to a non-profit group and entered park service on the Gwelo & District Light Railway, which was a park railroad run for the entertainment of children and adults alike.
Purchased by Peter Nott in 2004, it was moved to the central coast of California, United States where it was completely restored from the ground up to a high level of quality. Buckeye now operates on the Norgrove Railway in Arroyo Grande, CA. Join us as Hayden Seybold and Peter Nott fire up and run Buckeye on the 2/3rds of the railway which is now complete.

  • WOW! What a magnificent video recording Mike, THANK YOU! I have been hoping to finally get a better view of the "BUCKEYE", my hopes have been fulfilled, she is a superb restoration, and appears to be a fine, fun "Steamer"!-- It is also very interesting to see the progress made on the NR over the past couple of years, they have come a long way. The dedication, excellent planning, and hard work is obvious and quite stunning-- what a fine steam railway!!

  • I got to see this engine myself back in 2019 as it attended the very last railfest event the Fillmore & Western Railway did before they closed 2 years later. I was surprised it was built in Germany as the only other train related thing I had seen that wasn't from America at that moment was a boxcar from the U.K. Glad to know this engine still runs and that it's well taken care of by its owners.

  • Are you rebuoilding these locos as wood burning steam engienes, because as far as I know, this used to be coal burning.

  • It’s surprising how steam locomotives built for similar work look so different from one country to the next. Compare this German Feldbahn with, say a British two foot gauge 0-4-0 loco.

  • I know another O&K engine that that resides at the Heston steam museum that engine is an outside frame 0-8-0 tender engine that was built by O&K in 1938 it last operated at Heston in the 2010s it is currently waiting its turn to be rebuilt by the Heston steam museum alongside the CSK 0-4-0 tank engine which when it operated it sported a beautiful sounding Baldwin 3 chime whistle during the 1990s both operated into the late 2000s before they were taken out of service for their next rebuild currently there is still waiting hopefully they will both operate again in the near future especially the German O&K outside frame 2 foot narrow gauge steam locomotive here’s a video link of it operating at Heston besides have a German whistle it had a Baldwin 3 chime whistle kzhead.info/sun/pd6SYchrpIeJf6c/bejne.htmlsi=mKe_0_xuAGm8iObW
