Dan Rather, at 92, on a life in news

2024 ж. 27 Сәу.

It's been almost 20 years since Dan Rather signed off as anchor and managing editor of the "CBS Evening News," at the network where he spent 44 years covering wars, politics, and the assassination of JFK - and where he mentored a young correspondent named Lee Cowan. Rather, now 92, talks with Cowan about his illustrious career; about the story that gave him (and CBS) a black eye; and his post-CBS years, writing books and finding a new, younger audience on social media.

My mom started saying “good night Dan” after he closed out the news, and we would all say “Goodnight Dan” every night thereafter. I am fortunate to have experienced that era growing up. It’s truly sad that this generation doesn’t have the nightly model of respect, decency & sincerity that Dan Rather exemplified.

  • Growing up, like many of you, I watched the news with my parents. At our house, it was Walter Cronkite and the CBS Evening News. My most vivid memory of Dan was getting roughed up by Dailey's thugs at the '68 convention. He signed off his last broadcast with the word "Courage". (A lot of people thought it was corny.) I've tried to apply that to every challenge I've faced. I'm forever grateful to Mssrs. Rather & Cronkite for modelling how to be principled and honest in a world that's making it seem unrealistic to do so.

Dan made an impression on me and I always will remember that. My hope is that the Smithsonian institute, does something for Mr. Rathers because he is a part of the American fabric. I see the world today and often wonder what Mr. Rathers would think of America today? And the reason I would ask him that just because the America I grew up in is gone never to return. Unless you grew up in the 60s and 70s you’ll never understand. It was a different time a time that I miss horribly was America perfect no and that’s why I respect Mr. rather so much because he pointed out atrocities in America, and no other broadcaster could hold a candle to him. I would love to sit under that oak tree with Mr. Rathers, and just listen to his stories what a glorious life in Mr. Rathers if you ever read this, thank you for loving America the way I do.

    • You can actually keep up with his views, up to the present day on current affairs, through the website substack, where he has one and writes many articles. You can see the most popular one at the top, "Why Am I Speaking Out?" Where he does reflect on America today? And his number one concern is for the survival of our democracy - and he feels the number one threat to it is Trump and those in his own party who out of fear and desire to ride his coattails won't oppose him. He takes great pains to say he's not left or right wing, or anything in between - but in today's two-party politics, "us vs. them", ultra-polarized atmosphere, where Trump called Democrats "vermin" - I guess that's hard for people to believe, yet I do. I've got plenty of concerns and issues with the Democrats and Biden, but when one party won't accept results of elections where they clearly lose the popular vote, nor can accept the majority of the nation don't agree with them on things like abortion: the choice is pretty clear.

    • Yes, and therein lies the problem. Dan Rather was a journalist and did not seek to be the news. Today, many of the people on TV "news" (often opinion and commentary if cable unlike the original days of CNN) are personalities. Anderson Cooper appears on a New Years' Eve program doing shots with Kathy Griffin? It's unconscionable to me. The standards have gradually eroded, and things serious journalists of his era would never think of doing are now, somehow, accepted. People have become to interested in the talking heads themselves as a form of entertainment rather than the information that they are trying to (or should be) imparting.

  • At the age of 4 (yes, 4 y.o.) I would scramble in front of the TV and impatiently wait for the local news to end (as it seemed too false-cheerful and showy), and for Dan Rather to come on with the national news. Unlike the local news, he seemed to be someone I could learn from, I could trust, and had the perfect cadence of voice which made me feel that no matter how bad it was, and how things would end, it was going to be /okay/. And he would always tell me the truth. Those feelings persist today with a greater understanding of what he does and has done, and I am very grateful that he continues to deliver the news, albeit on a different platform. He is very much our Old Oak of America.

    • 😮😢😮👌 What an amazing career and a person was the man. My only regreat is the 3 best anchors were NOT interviewed together, to give us a prespective where and when America got weak and when it changed and see if it matches my own belief of when it happened. " I believe the greatest moment for the U.S. economy was when the dollar depended or was backed by GOLD and NIXON in 1973 changed it to being backed by Saudi Arabian oil and offered them military protection and why all the Middle Eastern countries hate the devil as they see it. The U.S. the devil that ruined countries Irak, Lybia, Siria, Oman, Lebanon, Somalia, Irak and Afghanistan in order for just SAUDI ARABIA to be able to sell oil freely and at will and why it also put sanccions to countries like VENEZUELA (holding the biggest oil reserves in the entire world and is poor due to sanctions) so they don't sell the oil cheaper then Saudi Arabia and this ruined their economy and why we have currently a MASSIVE INVASION OF INMIGRANTS CROSSING OUR BORDERS AND BORDERS OF OTHER NATIONS LIKE COLOMBIA, PERU, ECUADOR, CHILE, PARAGUAY, AND MANY AMERICANS ARE UNAWARE WHY NO ONE, EITHER REPUBLICANS OR DEMOCRATS HAVE NOT RESOLVED IT IN 40 YEARS AND MAYBE SOMEONE NEEDS TO EXPAIN IT SO THAT EVERYONE CAN UNDERSTAND IS A PROBLEM CREATED BY OUR OWN DOING 😞 IF YOU WANT TO SOLVE THE INMIGRATION INVASION IS VERY SIMPLE, JUST STOP RUINING OTHER COUNTRIES ECONOMIES WITH WARS AND SANCTIONS AND STOP THE DOLLAR FROM CIRCULATING ALL OVER THE WORLD 😔 THIS WILL ALLOW THE ECONOMIES FROM ALL OTHER COUNTRIES THE WORLD TO HAVE BETTER ECONOMIES AND THEIR CITIZENS WILL HAVE NO NEED TO COME LOOKING FOR THE MIGHTY DOLLAR AND THE AMERICAN DREAM, BECAUSE THERE WOULD BE NO REASON FOR THEM TO COME HERE IF THEY COULD LIVE WELL IN THEIR OWN COUNTRIES. (maybe Americans can get educated and learn why no one has ATACKED AND FIX THIS MAJOR ISSUE. AND IS BECAUSE IN ORDER TO FIX THIS, OUR ECONOMY WOULD COLAPSE THE MINUTE THE DOLLAR STOPS CIRCULATING ALL OVER THE 🌎 WORLD. AND THESE ARE THE QUESTION I WOULD ASK MR. RATHER A VERY EDUCATED AND GREAT GENTLEMAN WITH LOTS OF KNOWLEDGE. And this is why and how DUBAI WAS BORN in just 40 years" 😊 I would of loved it if Brokraw, Jennings and Dan Rather would of interviewed me so I can explain in detail when the world became biological and the trillions of dollars spent on electronic weapons became obsolete. CROOKED DONNI #45 started the worst trade war of all wars in the past 80 years without a real plan to win and allowed China to become the #1 economic power coming out of the Pandemic 2020.😢 When the world finds out who is the Nano Expert Scientist 👉CHARLES LIEBER 👈 that got recruited by China and was paid almost 2 million dollars to create almost 48 killer viruses 🦠 and the F.B.1. on April 2019 @ Logan Airport, while trying to escape to Wuhan China, YANQING-YE CHINESE SPY 👈 she was areested with her assistant leutenant spy and is when the F.B.1. CONFISCATED 21 VIALS OF BIOLOGICAL SENSITIVE MATERIALS OF MASS DESTRUCTION IN THEIR LUGAGGES AND SOCKS. 😮 WHEN THE F.B.1. ANNOUNCED THIS ARREST ON FEB. 2020 I WAS ABLE TO FIGURE OUT THE PANDEMIC THAT STARTED 2 MONTHS LATER ON APRIL 2020 WAS A RETALIATION TO DONALD TRUMPS ECONOMIC WAR‼️🤦😔 AND I WAS PROBABLY ONE OF THE FIRST PERSONS IN THE WORLD TO REALIZE DONALD TRUMP LIED TO THE WORLD THAT IT WAS A CHINESE FLU THEN THAT A CHINESE MAN ATE A BAT 🦇😂 THE MOST RIDICULOUS GREATEST LIE GIVEN BY AN INCOMPETENT PRESIDENT IN U.S. HISTORY. ON APRIL 2020 IS WHEN THE WORLD WAS PUT UPSIDE DOWN AND OUR ECONOMY RUINED. THE GOV. WAS OBLIGATED TO PAY PANDEMIC HELP TO AN ENTIRE NATION FOR 2.5 YEARS AND WHY WE NOW HAVE A 35 TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT. WHAT ALSO GOT THE U.S. IN DEBT WAS SPENDING ON WEAPONS IN WARS LASTING 20 YEARS IN AFGHANISTAN, IRAK, LYBIA, WHILE CHINA AND RUSSIA SPENT THEIR MONEY WISELY AND BUILDING PROJECTS LIKE NORD-STREAM THE SALE OF GAS TO ALL EUROPE AND ASIA. AND IT'S WHY NOW THE U.S. HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO CREATE THE III WORLD WAR DUE TO THIS MASSIVE DEBT AND B.R.I.C.S. 😢 BECAUSE BRICS WILL NOT DEAL ANY LONGER WITH THE DOLLAR 💵💰.😢 AND USE THE YUAN AND THE RUBLE INSTEAD (Putin heard all Americans they want the massive invasion of immigrants fixed 😂 well he will fix it for you l, but when the DOLLAR STOPS CIRCULATING IN 13 COUNTRIES OUR ECONOMY WILL COLLAPSE 😔 DON'T ASK TO FIX SOMETHING LIKE INMIGRATION IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THE DOLLAR WORKS‼️😔 THIS IS WHY U.S.A. AND NATO ARE TRYING TO ASSASINATE PUTIN AND STOP MORE COUNTRIES FROM JOINING B.R.I.C.S. 😢 IT IS NOT PUTIN TRYING TO PUT MILITARY BASES IN TIJUANA OR MONTREAL CANADA BUT IS THE UNITED STATES STILL INCISTING ON WEAKONING RUSSIA'S ECONOMY (Nord-Stream). 🦠🔥🦠 I WOULD OF LOVED TO GIVE DAN RATHER THE EXCLUSIVITY TO INTERVIEW ME SO I CAN SHOW HIM IN DETAIL HOW THE 2020 PANDEMIC STARTED. THANK YOU MR. RATHER FOR ENLIGHTENING MILLIONS AROUND THE WORLD WITH YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND IMPECABLE PROFESSIONALISM ✌️🙋😉
