Inside Tom Hartley Junior's INCREDIBLE car dealership | Selling Supercars Episode 5
Tom Hartley Junior's story is an astonishing one. He left school at 11 and started selling supercars in his dad's family business - but then, 10 years ago, he made a break for it and set up on his own and it's been a monumental success.
In an unassuming industrial estate in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, he has housed some of the world's most incredible cars and in this episode of our Selling Supercars series he talks us through why he started the business, what makes him different and opens up about that difficult split from his dad.
We even managed to convince him to take us for a spin in a stunning Ferrari Dino where we chat about his grand plans for his new site, a Mecca for supercar lovers, that he's currently building in the Cotswolds.
Join us as we take a look around his showroom and meet one of the most successful classic, hyper and supercar dealers on the planet.

Tom Jr and Carl couldn’t be anymore different
Where his father survives on quoting net worth, the hilariously named 'Hartley Estate', name dropping and confusing success with wealth, it appears his greatest success, completely unbeknown to him, has been bringing up this gentleman.
I believe it’s a ‘traveller’ thing that they feel the need to quote or actually make up how successful they are.
WTF are you talking about ? How can you possibly think Tom senior survives on quoting net worth ? He survives (and thrives) on being, along with Carl, the best Supercar dealer in the country. No one can touch them for volume, and no one works harder.
@@LynGriffiths70 The reviews online along with forum comments tell a very different story to the one you proclaim - same can’t be said for Amari, Romans, European prestige etc etc. But ok Little Tom and Carl are the best in the country 😂
@@LynGriffiths70 Hi Tom
@@davidclarke2193 Hi Dick..
Pure class, a different league to his father. Very knowledgeable and not arrogant at all.
It’s incredible for someone who by his own admission didn’t finish school conventionally, yet has such an incredible command of the vocabulary and terminology, it’s like listening to a scholarly auctioneer at a fine auction house. I could listen to him all day.
Gypsies are self-taught , we are taught the art of communication is a way of getting a living off the pavement, we are taught from a very early age to read people ,with that set of skills we can get a living in any environment. It’s a fallacy to think all gypsies are criminals robbing people , the Heartley are prime examples .
i mean it helps if your dad did the same thing and was a multi millionaire lol
Classy Guy, his father should take note.
He sure is, but from my experience so is his father, just a different generation.
Tom's ok, good at what he does.
He has left his father in the dust
@@MikeAnderson-cu2tu I'm sure he'll cope, they're very respectful people.
His dad sounds like the dodgiest secondhand care salesman ever.
The best of the hartleys I’d feel comfortable doing business with him
I did feel Tom Hartley jnr very much down to earth , not arrogant in anyway. Basically someone you could do business with. Great vid
Tom Hartley Jr has a real passion for collectible cars and gives his customers service that is second to none.
His younger brother who is winging it, messes around with silly KZheadrs 🤣 🤣2 totally different men
I bought a vehicle from THJ in 2023, my first dealings, and can confirm that the service and product was every bit as he explains in the video. Vehicle a little more expensive than similar elsewhere but the process was immaculate. Will 100% re-patronise.
What did you buy? Why leave us hanging. 😂
Del Boys Reliant Robin it was discovered in a lockup in Peckham. 1 careful owner plus ten lunatics Got it for 5 bags. 😂😂😂
What an impressive man ! His father and brother could learn some humility from him . Love the story so far and looking forward to seeing it going forward.
New subscriber. What an episode to discover. I’m retired now but Tom gets the old business juices flowing again. What a businessman who knows instinctively it’s all about the right people.
Glad you liked it. Check out the others in the series. We filmed one with Tom’s dad too. The playlist is on our channel or in this video’s description
Great video. Tom's passion for the cars is lovely to see. He truly cares about the individual cars with a passion. He comes across as a nice unpretentious bloke too, considering the amounts of money involved.
Thank you for the charming video and its delicate and insightful Q&A.
Very pleased you enjoyed it! ^James
On the (very) steady drive out in the Dino, I could imagine the driver of the red Honda Jazz stuck behind thinking "Why doesnt this Dino get a chuffing move on?!"
What a fantastic interview. Thank you and thank you Tom.
Thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed it
I really love how down to earth Tom is, and equally love his exquisite taste in older vehicles. May his new venture go well
THJ is so knowledgeable, a proper upstanding business man who is passionate about his business, he is at the top of the game but will never rest on his laurels, and he comes across as a very nice guy, great video just wish it had been longer.
The only thing that left me disappointed with this video was when it ended!! Great work all round.
Tom seems like a man who's doing business the right way, for the right reasons... And that's how you become truly successful and build a reputation. That's no easy thing to do, especially when you have a family name that precedes you and you want to build that reputation on your own terms. I salute you Tom.
The old man sounds like a nightmare to work with, I see why Tom wanted to branch out on his own
Tom Snr is a complete arsehole, there are a few who have had their eyes wiped by the old man, selling Ferrari with paint issues and other faults that should have been rectified
Very insightful, what a great inventory and you can clearly see his passion and knowledge of his market.
Absolutely. His knowledge of the cars is incredible
The red 288 GTO in the background...nice to walk in and buy that dream Ferrari. I'm glad they are for sale and not *all* hidden away.
What an inspirational chap.I remember watching him on a TV Doc many years when he was a kid working with his Dad selling cars
A very well captured interview totally enjoy watching every bit of it.
quite frankly one of the best of this type of video ive ever seen loved it so well presented and filmed superb
Fantastic informative content. Love it. Thanks! 👍
Amazing peace put together perfectly. Keep them coming please
Whenever I see a Tom Hartley video, I click on it. He's fascinating and knowledgeable about the cars that matter in the history of important automobiles. I look forward to the next walk-around he does in the showroom, and I am impatiently waiting for a tour of his new showroom facility.
"Cars of importance" sums it up well. What a business!
Fabulous video and Tom is a gentleman the cars are stunning and one of my all time favourites is the Dino so to hear how lovely it is to drive just elevates my enthusiasm even more, better do the lottery.
When he talks about losing his traditional education, and how he left the family business-without selling his shares-the subtext is deafening. He seems so different to his Dad and brother.
I like what I’ve seen of TH. His dedication to his work and passion and knowledge for these special cars is impressive. I would say his approach comes across as totally uncompromising - exactly what you’d want when buying cars of this calibre
Amazing, always wait for a “Tom talks” video
Fantastic interview and well put together. Love hearing and sharing success within the auto dealer industry. Cheers 🍻
Really enjoyed this. Great journalism.
Thank you. Very glad you enjoyed it
Wonderful. There will be only very few people to be able to go there and buy. But watching this video is already very interesting. Thank you all. 😊😊
That was great. Thank you.
I’ve always thought that Tom Hartley Junior comes across really well; great interview.
Just watched the entire video in one hit. Tom Jr would be a great guy to work for i have no doubt. I dare say i big part of setting up on his own would be to separate himself from his brother and aspects of his reputation as well.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching
What a business and inventory THJ has his passion for his cars is remarkable
THJ is a breath of fresh air
Such an amazing collection!
Fantastic film. THJ is an automotive encyclopedia. Thanks for the show 👍
How impresssive. Amazing
Great video of a great dealer. On a lighter note I've never seen a Dino yet where both the front corner bumpers align properly!
I always enjoy a quick look when I pop to Screwfix
Great content and very humanizing...
Just saw your latest video! Great stuff as always. 😊
Thank you!
Tom knows what his skill set is and has grown his business on that basis - to display the value on integrity rather than profit is refreshing and to make the customer feel valued when they purchase a vehicle is such a simple ethos I wish so many others would replicate - be that main dealers or independents. Well done Tom and the best of success for the future. BTW - dont expand overseas, clients with this wealth level will buy based on presentation, history and information - sell in the UK and transport overseas.
As an American I can see why you would want to keep him in the UK. He’s definitely an amazing person is the high end car world.
It's so easy when you've got a huge helping hand
Great video
Excellent video…
This was a really good watch… thank you. I have to ask, is the Dino Oro Longchamp? Certainly looks like it to me.
I’m not actually sure I’m afraid. But glad you enjoyed it
Dino colour is Nocciola Metallizzato.
Wow just wow different calibre
Great video.
I imagine for those with the Money buying a car from Tom would be a pleasurable and very special experience!
My lottery shopping dream is to visit here. Outside I must emit is a bit disappointing but the gold inside and what you can view online is outstanding. You just love to see these Cars treated right. “ DB5 recently restored and one of …….” Never gets boring. He’s a bit different from his other brother and father but I like that, he’s more about the story behind the Car over his brother who has sold seven cars by lunch and wants them out as quick as. Right Euro lottery win it is and I’d limit myself to just three purchases and if he can track me down a Original Cooper S sport fully restored maybe four 😂 You actually feel your taking away one of his children ( in a car sense) buying anything from him. I just love the way he goes about his business a bit like Iain Tyrrell it’s a pleasure just to listen to them talk about the Cars. Oh Tom please when it’s up and running introduce us all to the new place, sounds amazing.
I’ll be asking Tom for the first tour of his new showroom when it opens! ^James
I visited THJ's showroom (storage unit!) and it's unreal! Jonathan Kaiser showed me around but unfortunately I missed out on the car I was after - 360 spider with gated manual - it may even be the one in this footage parked outside! But the service was amazing and next time I won't miss out... I want to get my 360 from here though, because you're buying from enthusiasts who share a love for cars, not just a dealer.
Lot of respect for Tom Junior.Getting better as time passes..
Best in the business
The amount of money in that showroom is staggering 😮
It’s all his backers money not his.
I have a lot of respect for THJ. I'd love to have dinner with him and talk cars!
cool dealership🙂
Oh how I'd love to work there as a sales person.
This fella is the elite
Lovely care wow
Falling short on customer service creates unnecessary resentment. Spot on.
Class act. Good to hear about the split from his family from the horses mouth.
Could watch a Tom Hartley jnr video all day as for he’s dad and gobshite brother that’s a different story
I will meet him one day 😮
Tom said he didn't sell his shares in he's Dads company (Tom Hartley Cars) but I believe he had to buy he's way in for a very large sum. How did he fund the change in dealership and does that mean he still owns some of Tom Hartley...
He walked away with nothing
Really admire how THj won’t take on a car he doesn’t believe in. Many companies parade their so called values on walls and websites. Yet THj appears to operate on good old fashioned principles. Someone I would love to work for.
Excellent interview of one of the classic car industries great purveyors. Always enjoy his channel. Great cars and great stories.
Class is a subjective term widely used now days, to me Class is quality, knowledge and truth, add customer service that matches those values, tick, tick ,tick, tick enough said.
The Hartleys 1:31 get slated in the motor trade. I find Toms knowledge and presentation exceptional. Wish him all the best
I think his father and brother just run a different beast of a business, it’s a numbers game chasing the next deal almost like a drug fix. Tom here is more a perfectionist and interested in selling the right car over just selling Cars for profit.
As a consumer of sports cars, Ferrari in particular, it's all very nice to be seduced by great service and be assured of proper provenance of the chosen vehicle but it's quite another to be paying way more than the market for a particular car! His profit margins seem to indicate his asking prices are heavily exaggerated to the upside.
Could you tell me please if the deno is a factory color thank you
The Dino is is in its original factory colour - Nocciola Metallizzato.
that DB4 looks like it has fresh paint on it.
The apple 🍎 in this case appears to have fallen quite some distance from the tree.
Please correct the front bumpers on the Dino ..
front bumpers on the Dino need adjusting
Just wanted to say, the front passenger side bumper is misaligned to the drivers side on the Dino 🤔
I'am excited to see, who will buy ex. Erling Haalands GLS 63 AMG from Germany ;-)
Aston Martin🎉❤
Any Saab's?
pretty fucking incredible
AKA Frank Lopez of Ashby. I bet he has a draw full of bugal in the signing area
Seems a completely different personality to his brother and father. If I was spending huge money on a car I know who I’d rather be dealing with.
He seems young for the amount of knowledge
He started working full time for his dad’s garage at 11 years old. I remember reading about him in the Daily Mail as England’s youngest ever car dealer. I was in awe as a kid
@@justsomeguy1141 He seems a good guy.
Id hate to see his Insurance premiums!
Enjoyed the video but the comments section is an "interesting" mix of views/opinions!
If you want a gold cost represetaive my name is Zac love this cars
The only time a Ferrari has held up an old lady in a Honda Jazz!
I wonder why THJ branched out away from his Dad and his Brother? 🤔
Dino front bumper left is all squint.
Doubt it
Black socks, brown shoes, says it all I'm afraid. What about the huge gulp at 2.22 when talking about stock values?
That guy could sell you black socks and brown shoes if he choose to do so.
What colour socks should one wear with brown shoes.
@@TheTotalPackage-qo5gx You can have 3 guesses, but the first two don't count.
@@robertelliot9508 White, Red and Blue.
