  • I have had great success using 'flannel backed vinyl tableclothes' here in NW Ohio to protect our blueberries, strawberries and grapes. Our fruit trees, which are old and too large to cover, we spray down with water before sunrise.

  • It's alot of work, but worth it. I've spent every night for a week, wrapping and covering plants and berries. Lots of clothpins, cause we also get wind. I've learned to cage my blueberries every winter, cause the bunnies love the new growth. Those fleece blankets are 1.99 after Thanksgiving at Menards every year. I have bought so many for dog blankets, but they sure come in handy for plants!

  • When our fruit trees were in bloom and we were expecting a freeze we would set up a sprinkler and spray the trees and that saved our fruit production.

  • I'm in southern Wisconsin, I have blueberry blooms too, its quite early. They went through a freeze recently, pre-bloom. I piled leaves over them all. 👍 I've had them in grow bags for 5 years. Handy to be able to move them together and cover. I love blueberries too! ❤

  • Plastic grocery bags!! You can cover lots of branches, plus use sheets as well. You should get a roll of frost cover from like growers solutions. That stuff is great. It comes in a 10 by 100 roll. Plus get some claims or close pins for securing the blankets, plastic bags and/or frost cover. I'm up in Kalkaska County so we are a few weeks away from planting out. But it's that time of year and we have to keep an eye on the weather daily. Thanks for sharing. God bless and protect.

Watering the frost off the plants really really helped. The blueberry farms around here had their sprinklers going for the nite.

  • I’m currently watching you wrap up your fruit trees and wanted to share what we do to protect our magnolias!! I planted them on the north side of my house so they need lots of protection from the north winter winds. We have leftover pieces of rebar from a project that we use with thick plastic (I think the plastic was from an old paint project). We stick the rebar in the soil to make “teepee” like posts, then wrap the plastic around the rebar posts and use metal clamps to fasten it. Then you tie up the top like a Santa toy bag. It works beautifully!!

  • So glad everything seemed to make it!! The only thing I have planted is my onions and some new herbs. I thankfully only had to cover the tender herbs. I knew my onions would be okay because I left some in the garden over winter and they are doing great. I know I sure hope the freeze warning days are over because I really want to plant my cabbage, but here in Illinois...it just isn't safe until around Mother's Day.

  • I'm really surprised you fleece your strawberries. I've had mine go under snow and come back out with a few black tips on leaves and just keep going. Blossoms drop but still produce berries and no big deal. Only thing I am concerned that I may have lost was my peaches.... it got the few blossoms I had and the buds look gray now. Cherry didn't even seem phased. But this is my off year on peaches too. Was hoping the pruning I did on the peaches would help even it out, but we'll see if the blossoms I had had were found and pollinated before they dropped.

  • You can wrap or lay down: burlap, cardboard, tarps, paper bags. Buy inexpensive winter row cover, it's not that expensive and can be used over and over again (available in various thicknesses for different temperatures and various lengths), it's worth it and so fast to lay down or drape around trees/shrubs/plants. Someone said wrap saran wrap around items but I'm not sure if that would work or not?

  • I am in SW Idaho and we almost always have to deal with freezing temperatures on our fruit blossoms, especially our apricot. This year we have had amazingly warm temperatures, so no worries. We should have abundant crops of all our fruit, unless we get a lot of fireblight on the apple and pears like we did last year. Our trees are too big to cover them with anything. Things we have tried are propane heaters under the trees, sprinklers under trees during the coldest time of the night. There is a product I have sprayed on them called KDL that can give the blossoms a few degrees of resistance to a freeze. I think most fruit blossoms can withstand cold temps down to about 28 before they have too much damage. And wind helps too. Oh, also, the phase of the blossom makes a difference. The less open they are, the hardier they are.
