My Amish Grocery Bulk Shopping Haul | Spring Pantry Stock

2024 ж. 14 Мам.
25 577 Рет қаралды

I depleted a lot of my pantry stores over the Winters, so it's time to hit up my local Amish Bulk Grocery store to stock up on some items. Sometimes these hauls at bigger, and sometimes smaller - this one is probably medium sized. I'll also discuss in this video why we don't use a service like Azure Standard for bulk pantry items.

  • Personally I think buying local just to keep your own economy going is the best bet. Even if it does cost a bit more. 🤷‍♀️ We need to support small business and local farmers the best we can.

  • We don’t have access to an Amish store here. But we’re in Azures home state and it works for us. But I don’t recall them advertising to be cheaper than anyone else. Their mission is to offer clean food to those who wouldn’t normally have access to it. They carry things like butter as mentioned in an above comment, etc., as part of their service. But it’s not cheaper. I’d never buy it there. Where I do save is on bulk organic grains and beans that I cannot find here in any amount. And most of the time the grains are grown here in Oregon. Plus for me, there is no shipping cost.

  • I am near an entire Amish community that offers goods and services beyond just a local store. They have greenhouses, bulk food stores, hardware stores, shoe store, leather working shop, diary shop, furniture making, and much more. We are so very blessed to be able to have had the opportunity to move here. We are getting to know some of them and they are just such wonderful people who have a positive look on everything.

  • King Arthur has an amazing Gluten free pizza crust recipe on their website. The recipe uses their all purpose GF flour which doesn't have xanthan gum in the mix. I'm not sure how well the recipe will adapt to the measure for measure flour but in theory it should work if you don't add any extra xanthan gum. I think that's the main difference between the plain all purpose GF flour and the GF measure for measure flour. Some tips if you make it-- the wetter the dough the lighter texture the crust will be. Do NOT try to add extra flour to make it kneadable. The GF dough will be more like a thick pancake batter or wet spackle. Dip you hands in oil or warm water to gently spread the dough out to the size you want. Make it on parchment paper on top of a pan-- the dough is very sticky but parchment releases easy. Parchment also helps prevent cross contamination from your pans which may hold gluten traces in the crevices. Hope you try it next time you have pizza night with your family!

  • Rachel I bake gluten free for my husband. I use standard recipes and the only change is I always add and extra egg to the batters. Gluten free flour tends to make things drier and the extra egg really helps alleviate that problem. Good luck.

  • Baking gluten free is quite a bit easier than it used to be. I’ve heard King Arthur is great, but haven’t tried it yet. I’ve been Gf for a long time, almost 20 years now, and my daughter is too. As long as all your additional ingredients are Gf, you’ll do great! I just made my grandma’s mayonnaise cake recipe Gf for the first time and even my mom couldn’t tell the difference. Also, Bob’s Red Mill egg replacer works 100% in baking. You can make an entire recipe of cookies with them and everyone will love them. 😊

  • It’s nice that your Amish store has high quality, non GMO items. I have one near me but they just buy large quantities of regular (no better than fortified, processed store quality) items and re-package for resale. Not every Amish store sells locally grown foods. I’ve even seen ours repackaging eggs that came from Sam’s into cartons to re-sell as ‘farm fresh’ eggs! Buyer, still beware. I love shopping from Azure, but would buy more locally if I could find the quality. I live in NW Arkansas (aka: Walmart country).

  • Totally agree with you in regards to your Azure Standards comment. For me as well, it's just not as cost effective as buying and sourcing locally. I have celiac (hyper sensitive) and the only flour I buy is King Arthur's flour. In taste you literally cannot tell a difference. However, not everything always comes out perfectly, for whatever reason, like regular flour. I think it probably has to do with the stripping and adding of the grain? You have to play around with it in baking. But as far as cross-contamination, I've never experienced it with King Arthur.

    @ArkansasSquaw@ArkansasSquaw20 күн бұрын
  • I so agree with you on buying locally cheaper than with Azure. Not only do you have to be there for the drop, you have to help unload the truck, AND you have a percentage of shipping to pay. Some drops are a long distance, so that robs you of time, and also gas cost. I am also able to buy Amish and Mennonite locally, and LOVE it!!

The nearest town with grocery stores, Wal mart, Costco and Whole Foods is 70 miles away. I would rather support Azure than Costco or the rest. I do believe the founder of Azure would encourage you to shop local at an Amish store if that's your healthiest option.

  • I am like you, I got the catalog and have even done my shopping at the Amish and when I come home, I will sit down at the computer and make up an exact order of what I purchased and it will be anywhere from $80-$200 more at Azure so I don't order from them either...PLUS if there is ever an item that I do need, they will order it for me....I also order all my garden seeds from them at Morgan County Seeds. I only have goats for milk but for some of my cheeses I get my raw milk from a local Amish famer too and then my rye, wheat and corn I get from them to make fodder for all my farm animals.

    @Notable2Nikki@Notable2Nikki21 күн бұрын
    • Kerrygold is not good butter…1. It isn’t organic. 2. It has something in it that isn’t good and the remnants stay in a person for years. It is grass fed but that is the only good thing about it. Truly is far better. Yes you can find organic cheaper closer to home on some things but not everything. You have to be a wise shopper, and check prices.

  • Hey Rachel, FYI for baking with your grandson you can use ground flax with water to replace eggs, you'll have to look up the amount because don't want to mislead you with the wrong ration of flax:water but it's got to be out there in Google land! Also, with some celiac people, cross contamination such as cooking in a toaster that has wheat bread toasted, or oil for frying that has had gluten coating fried in it can be enough to set off a flare...I'm sure you know all about your daughter in laws sensitivities just wanted you to know that maybe as she ages, she may find any contamination in a kitchen that cooks with gluten more of an issue 😉.

Buckwheat, such as used in Japanese soba noodles is gluten free (but not all soba noodles are gluten free, so watch out!) The rub is that, especially for more sensitive folks, even processing in the same facility with gluten can cause issues.

  • I consider myself blessed to live in an area where these types of goods are available at a Mennonite store. By the time I add the 8.5% shipping because of my location on an Azure order, it's way more expensive. For example, I purchased fifty pounds of organic rolled oats for $51 locally. From azure it's $58. You can say, "It's only $7." But if it's $7 more for oats, $7 more for wheat, and so on, you can spend a lot more. I use Azure sparingly when I can coop an order with my daughter. I can recommend the organic cosmic crisp apples from Azure. They are so tasty! Also, Azure brand coconut milk is excellent.

I'd say it's somewhat similar to a Bob's Red Mill. You might check to see if they do that at the one you shop at also. I'd also recommend the channel Let Them Eat Gluten Free for baking sweets. Her cinnamon rolls are out of this world delicious. 😊

  • If you videoed your gluten free baking that would be great. I have coeliacs and experimenting with new recipes is my fave. In Australia we cant eat oats as its off limits for Coeliacs sadly. I am trying to learn all the intricacies with gf baking. Main meals are a breeze. Its the sweet treats i find harder to nail.

  • I was interested in Azure too. I couldn’t justify all the fees plus having to unload the truck. If I’m paying a delivery fee that should include unloading in my opinion. Plus I was not crazy about driving to Detroit to pick it up. I think we have one closer now but still the fees.

  • I wish we had an Amish store. I was looking at Azures sales today but I can't afford to buy in bulk from them and I would have to travel over a half hour to pick up an order into the next state.

  • I looked in to Azure so many times, at my old place and here. Both over 2 hours away for pick up. And I just couldn't justify the prices and bulkiness of the amounts for just the 2 of us, and limited freezer space or temperature control for most things.

  • I wish we did have an Amish store near me. I would even drive 40 minutes out, but we do not have one.

  • I have used just plain rice flour as the flour substitute in corn bread. We couldn’t even tell the difference in taste or texture.

  • I work with an amish family, and please keep in mind that they don't believe in pictures of themselves. I absolutely adore the family I work with as they are very honest and caring people and keep prices much lower than what you have paid.

  • Do you ever cook oat groats for breakfast or a savory side dish?

  • The amish store by me does their own azure standard orders and that's what they sell in their stores. So they get the benefits of being an azure drop location and then they make a profit off of the sales in store. So it isn't very economical for me.

  • I much rather purchase items from the Amish. I’m going in June to the Amish area in Walnut Creek, so I’ll be doing a stockup at that time.
