Worddddd. In my opinion his writing always makes you think. I don’t think the transgender jokes were lazy at all. They made you think and reassess the very concept of being transgender as well as tackling his controversy and his past along with it. Dave Chappelle is many things, but never a lazy writer.

Perfect analysis. I live in London and Louis CK announced a show in Leeds a few months back. I quickly booked, booked the day off and train tickets in the morning. At 12:30pm I got an email saying the show had been cancelled. Sure enough, local unknown woke “comics” had harassed the venue and forced them to cancel the gig. I was furious and devastated and my train tickets were non-refundable.
I think I a vaguely remember that. Wasn't it all because of some irrelevant chick that nobody has heard of?

The reason LGBT people get upset and sensitive at those jokes is because of the context and social implications of said joke. Dudes, the majority of Americans think that LGBT people are fucking degenerates and freaks by default and their identity is used to mock and belittle people. For example, calling a man "limp wrist" and "effeminate" is viewed as an insult or negative to straight people while at the same time it's used to describe the average characteristics of a gay man. Cognitive Chaos, most people including straights don't like nor can handle being mocked for an aspect of their identity that they cannot control for fuck sake we had a Straight Pride Parade because having an LGBT parade was too much for our delicate straight feelings. I'm not saying people shouldn't have the rights to mock or create jokes about one's identity, I'm just saying these people are already shitted on and despised by society and they heard all the jokes... many times in fact so it's not like they think there are above everyone.

Thanks Beige, longtime fan since the beginning, and you're coming in heroically illustrating this comedy cancel culture so perfectly. It reminds me when Patrice was on Fox News debating some cancel culture lady and explained that comedians have the right to make jokes, some of them will be bad, some will work, but they all come from the same birth. Canceling people's livelihoods and reputations for the comedian's job of making the attempt to make a joke really is cancer. Comedians are the last line of defense for free speech and we need to recognize that.

To be fair, even a non-pc legend like Carlin said in an interview with Larry King that he wasn’t a big Kinison fan because he felt Kinison punched down too much. I don’t agree with the concept of you can’t punch down, but it’s not something new fangled invented by the sole crowd.
Carlin wasn’t talking about Kinison, he was talking about Dice Clay. Carlin actually loved Kinison and owed a lot of his later, more aggressive delivery to Sam. He even dedicated Jammin in NY to Kinison: “This is for Sam”

Most actual trans people on Reddit seem indifferent or at least mildly disappointed about Chapelle. Too many allies and "woke" reviewers getting outraged over lazy writing.
True. A loud niche will yell unreasonable points to unfairly represent the majority which does no favors for anyone. I'm very left-wing and all the inclusive/diversity thing, I really am, but I cannot stand that the "regular" public only sees the Tumblr SJW's and thinking these loud morons really represent anything. I have two trans friends and they shrugged at the special and one even told me Chappelle's "alphabet people" bit was accurate.
The controversy over Chappelle's special is so overblown. A few articles that are offended ( or just didn't find it that good) and rotten tomatoes reviews and everyone loses their mind. So many people who love this special acts like you must be an offended "SJW" if you don't think it was the greatest thing ever. Theres more outrage about the outrage.

I disagree with a few of your points here, we definitely don't understand power dynamics the same. That said your last argument about apologies and their effect or noneffect is pretty insightful, especially the part on reconciling liking something/someone that you're not supposed to like anymore. Being a "left tuber" is weird with the level of tip toeing and infighting that sometimes happens as you see big figures like Contrapoints and Lindsay Ellis get "canceled". Much of this cancelation is probably attributed to right leaning trolling. But it still typifies the kind of tenuous balance that is needed to work in this space. Lots of thoughts here...🤔

This one missed the mark in my opinion. Beige mostly used the same sort of vague generalizations to critique the new bogeyman of cancel culture which he claimed the woke media was using against Louis and Dave. When you start to say things like, “once you apologize, it’s like letting the vampire into your house” you’re not engaging in serious critique anymore, but hyperbolic sensationalism, which doesn’t benefit anyone on any side of these issues.
Fun fact: Hari kondabolu netflix special got 100 percent from Rotten tomatoes. Hannah gadsby also got 100 percent. If you are minority(not blacks). Woc, alphabet people, automatically you will be praised by msm no matter what.

Insightful take overall, and I know Some More News did a good video on this too, but one point I'd wish to add is that cancel culture can be a business tactic too. Like any other 'media campaign', positive and negative press/ social media coverage can be controlled. I think Chapelle is a living legend, I'd listen to him saying whatever he damn well wants to say
Yeah it's mostly orchestrated. Sure you might see the stuff bubble on twitter from some randoms, but the rest is corporate entities protecting their interests.

Louie ck is a modern day philosopher. His comedy is not only funny, it make you question your opinions, in a way that may not sway you, but reinforce your beliefs. If your thinking something that you feel may be fucked up, he can make sense of it.
For me, the most controversial thing about Dave's new special was the lack of humour and originality. It was basically the Bird Revelation reworded, but with all the shock value taken out. Dave used to be such a special comedian, it's sad to see him fall into comedic mediocrity and become just another face in the crowd.
