  • May sound stupid, but as a kid Chief and the original Halo games taught me a lot of perspective on life. It taught me that even during the darkest hours you had to be your own hero and that no one is coming to save you. Master Chief isn’t just a hero of a great story, he’s a mindset that we all should have. That mindset made me wanna be like him. That when in the face of grave danger or strife you run towards the enemy and face the challenge when others may run. That’s what a good man does for others and for himself

Thank you so much for this. I can't describe how much this means to me. Thank you. (I am doing better and in the healing process, just so you know. Life is hard having panic attacks every other day or ones that last for days. But slowly, surely, life gets better. I vowed to stay alive because in the past i have had brief instances of people showing me enough love that it saved my life, i decided to return the favor and not let their loving deeds go in vain. I have found love for myself and those around me and that prevents me from doing something stupid.) Peace be with you Edit: Thank you for the love and support in the replies. Thank you for everything you've done, I hope you continue to make leaps and bounds towards improving your quality of life as you finally get to fight for yourself instead of for others in your battle with mental health. And know you don't have to fight it alone. You fought for your country, it's only fair if you let some of us fight for you now in your time of need. You survived the military, you can and will survive this and be stronger for it. I wish you all the best sir and give you more respect than I can put into words

I wanted to be a marine once, but had to settle on being someone else. Never really recovered from that blow to my mental/physical health, but the best we can do is move forward and smile; after all, the serious ones die first, so we should at least have a little fun.

    • It isn't just the advice alone that strikes a chord. It's the fact that it's said in a completely serious no-nonsense tone of voice, and also that it's coming from Master Chief whom, although a fictional character is a character that a number of us probably know better than some of our closer relatives due to playing AS him in a long series of games (and in books) that started coming out when we were just kids. He's been through a number of different Hells throughout the character's existence and came out the other side (ignoring all the times we-the-player died and reloaded) and *We've Seen It*. Effectively, he's earned our respect. Solid advice means a heck of a lot more coming from someone you respect than a total stranger which is probably one of the reasons that self-help books often aren't as much help as the authors hope it will be. It just doesn't have the same impact.

    • Hey. I've been in a similar situation. So, I'll tell you a few things that help. Heat is now your best friend. Get anything that generates heat (USB powered gloves for example) because now cold will make your bones hurt all over again. Comic books are your friend. When I was in casts, I tried reading. I'd try to turn the page of a book and usually launch it from my hands. Comic books lay flat. I got my casts off after half a year. I had extensive nerve damage. My recovery took 4 years or so, before I felt any sort of 'recovered' ideally your recovery will be faster. It will hurt. You will try to sit up on a chair, put a little too much pressure on your hands and suddenly you're on the floor. Maybe you'll try using a pen and feel like someone is standing on your arm. It will get better, but you will have to force it. If your bones themselves took any decent damage, start eating antacids. Calcium is something rare in the human diet, and you'll probably need more than you're used to having. Oh, and on a depressing note, be prepared to lose friends. I had a friend who was supposed to hang out with me. She came over, saw me in casts, and literally just left. Five years later, she hasn't spoken to me since. Just saw that I was damaged.

  • Hi, psychologist here (and also a fan of Halo) ! I just clicked on that video out of curiosity, to see if that was a "whatever I put in will be epic and meaningless cause it's masterchief hype and I'll try to surf on the wave" clickbait type of video. I gotta say, I am surprised it's actually really full of good advices. And the style and comparison you used fit very well within the halo universe while still be relevant to the day to day life of Mr. Nobody. I'll just add a bit of clarity about using a bias toward action. Two things I'll use to illustrate why it's very important to not underestimate its influence : - The brain can't "not think" of something without actually thinking about it in the first place : Don't think about a cat. That's it, you had to think about a cat before shifting your thoughts to not think about it, even if you only thought about it for .1s, you did. - Be aware that your mind is, by definition, biased. The brain always makes shortcuts. Therefore you're focused on the hints that confort your ideas of the world around you. It doesn't mean that it's not like you think it is, it means that you have a tunnel vision which happens to limit your ability to perceive things that go around it or even contradicts it. Aaron Beck talked about depression with 3 main feelings / bias : Hopelessness, Helplessness, Worthlessness. So the person believes that nobody can help them, there's nothing to hope for, and that they aren't worth the effort anyway. Now, that person will need to have a lot of locks replaced (not removed, you can't just fill something that was once full without anything -and emptiness can actually be something but that's for another day-) in order to see things in a productive way for them, but what unpleasant thing doesn't take time and efforts to go away ? To end it here, do not hesitate to seek for professionnal help if you feel that the people around you wouldn't understand. And even after that, if you get help but don't feel it's helping, change therapist : we are people, and nobody pleases everyone, but DO.NOT.GIVE.UP. To fit the theme with a modified quote of what I can say to my patients sometimes : "A spartan doesn't die from taking a hit, but by not stopping the bleeding". Now, finish the mission, spartans. NB : Hope it'll be understandable enough, I'm not a native, feel free to correct me if something sounds off !

  • I cried, i balled my eyes out. I got on my knees after I listened to this video and prayed to God and thanked Him for sending Master Chief my way. I've been going through a lot, but Chief told me to never quit and ask for help when i need it. I'm ready to face the day, the week, the month, the future. Thank you God, thank you Chief. Hang tough, everyone.

  • As somebody who's going through a hard time in their life, struggling with mental health and depression, in a very difficult time , this was inspiring, you took a childhood character of mine, that has followed me well into my adulthood, and put motivational words to inspire me. Only to realize that as I continue with faith in myself and pulling myself out of this hard situation, that I have some fight left in me, and all is not lost, and that I can continue to fight because I identified the problem, and I know how to fix it. Thank you.

  • This definitely hit the spot. I met my dad for the first time this weekend in over a decade. He bascially has been a crappy dad and doesnt want anything to do with me. He even decided to NOT come to my wedding but went to his other families. Struggling right now on what to do now as i want a relationship with him but also don't want to expend effort to have it wasted when i am not wanted. This Vid has taught me TO TAKE ACTION. 1. get in contact. 2. get answers for issues in the past. 3. decide if i want to stay in contact.

  • I needed this really badly. I think what really helped was getting affirmation that many of the steps he laid out to carry myself towards success are already in progress with me naturally. I've cried every day this week, but I NEVER let it keep me down if I can help it. Because I KNOW that better is possible, even when it seems impossible. Halo Infinite has taught me that after Season 5.
