However, the 2 goals conceded wasn't caused by the nature situation. United States' goal against Italy was Cristian Zaccardo's own goal, while in the Final against France, Zinedine Zidane scored it by penalty kick. Zidane had almost scored again in the dying minutes of the first half in the extra time, where Buffon had to made an infamous unorthodox save, before the head butt happened.

Messi had great calendar year stats too. PSG underperformed in the Champions League, but Messi had a ridiculously productive season for the club still. Haaland scored more goals, but Messi had an insane amount of assists. And of course, the world cup. It was close for sure, but it really boils down to what you think is harder to win CL or WC. Most people and players still consider the World Cup to be the ultimate goal and the most prestigious to win, so given his performance in it, be pretty hard to give Haaland the nod considering how close they were in goal contributions and everything else for the season. Messi's advanced stats were also just completely bloody mental as usual too all year. Since it's a best player award, and not simply about the most goals, it does seem pretty obvious Messi edges it with his total performances and the world cup run. But Haaland probably has a death grip on it for the foreseeable future because he's on a stacked team, is a complete monster at scoring goals and in the most hyped league right now. Unless Man City really fall apart or he gets hurt, hard to picture anyone else getting in the next couple seasons

I still give the edge to WC, if the difference was the Messi had only won the cup and not the league then I'd say Haaland. But the league is the most important and they both won it. I don't think FA + CL makes up enough to outweigh WC in my view at least. I think if it in terms, which would you rather win? I think if it was a treble vs a domestic cup and a world cup that's a tougher call for a player or a fan. (Probably still honestly giving the edge to world cup, but we've hit the point where you at least pause to think about it.) But I don't think many people would have to think about it when choosing to win the league and the world cup over a treble. Pretty sure in Paris no one would give a shit that they lost the CL or the domestic cup if Mbappé had won another WC. But there probably would have been loud grumblings even with that if PSG had lost the league

Important to remember that ballon d'or are never for the best player of the year, its a journalist opinion based price for other criteria than being "best". To win means you have created most awe that grab attention from most news outlets. Sure Haaland scored many goals and won a lot of trophies, but when the moment of attention in the finals was there and news outlets paid attention, he didn't dominate. Messi did in the WC with all the attention it brings and was a key figure in the final as well. That's why he won and that's why ballon d'or is not really a best player of the year award. I'm not hating on the price, nor Messi, but it's how it is and have always been and I would prefer if people understood that.

But he says nonsense, because currently it is the best player who must be rewarded, whereas before it was the best of the team which won the biggest competition of the year. So yeah Iniesta should have won with the former criteria and Haaland should have won with the actual. The problem is that voters don't follow the rules. So as Messi had a better career their votes are always biased to his advantage.

Respectfully, while Messi had an amazing world cup, he was NOT the best player year round. The Ballon D'or is based on player performance during the calendar year. While Messi (and other players such as Enzo Fernandez and Julian Alvarez) was amazing for those 4 weeks, he was far from the best player for the other 11 months. Erling Haaland 100% should've won the Ballon D'or, giving his consistency and great performances *year round* (Man City treble, first UCl for the club, Premier League top scorer, etc.).

Haaland only scored goals but his assist record is sub-per. Most of his goals were tap in goals after KDB and Rodri had done all the work, unlike Messi who created more chances than goals, granted, both of them play different positions.

As a messi fan, iniesta should’ve won 2010 one. Midfielders just get fucked in ballon d’or. But you are mistaken with his stats. In 2023, messi has 55 goal contributions in all competitions which is just 6 shy of haaland. He didn’t get the ballon d’or just for winning the wc. He got it for his spectacular performance. It was reminiscent of maradona.

Most of the candidates here were unlucky though. They were playing great in a wrong time : 2010 : Wesley Sneijder won the treble, but lost to Spain in WC Finals, this probably swayed second and first votes more to Xavi and Iniesta who ranked 2nd and 3rd. Sneijder might rank higher if Netherlands win the WC, and even probably beat Messi. Iniesta and Xavi of course, have no chance of winning it due to being second to Messi in Barca. 2013 : Ribery was actually close with CR7 and Messi. You could look it up that the top three had like 24-27% votes. Messi was at his peak as well this season. 2019 : I dunno why people think VVD was robbed. Those who saw Messi this season wouldn't really think so. Pool had a bad, and as a Spurs fan, i think dodgy UCL final as well. I think personally VVD would admit Messi deserved the award that year. 2021 : Lewa was on his absolute hot form but injuries keep them from advancing close to UCL. I know it looks strange, but Barca was only 1 position below Bayern at that year in UCL. Copa America basically sealed it for Messi. Didn't help Poland was shit at Euros as well. I think Bundesliga's perception as a one-team league really hurt his chance as well. 2023 : Even if you discount his penalties, Messi's performance in WC Knockouts are just damn ridiculous and consistent. I think it's equal to 2002 R9 in that regard. We know wins in big matches sway vote strongly. Haaland actually ghosted quite a lot in semis and finals. It really gives a vibe that their trebleswere won not because of him, but rather other players (Silva, Gundogan, Rodri). I think we couldn't say the same as Messi with Argentina. Haaland would be an absolute winner in other seasons, but this one wasn't his year, unfortunately.

Messi had great calendar year stats too. PSG underperformed in the Champions League, but Messi had a ridiculously productive season for the club still. Haaland scored more goals, but Messi had an insane amount of assists. And of course, the world cup. It was close for sure, but it really boils down to what you think is harder to win CL or WC. Most people and players still consider the World Cup to be the ultimate goal and the most prestigious to win, so given his performance in it, be pretty hard to give Haaland the nod considering how close they were in goal contributions and everything else for the season. Messi's advanced stats were also just completely bloody mental as usual too all year. Since it's a best player award, and not simply about the most goals, it does seem pretty obvious Messi edges it with his total performances and the world cup run. But Haaland probably has a death grip on it for the foreseeable future because he's on a stacked team, is a complete monster at scoring goals and in the most hyped league right now. Unless Man City really fall apart or he gets hurt, hard to picture anyone else getting in the next couple seasons

Important to remember that ballon d'or are never for the best player of the year, its a journalist opinion based price for other criteria than being "best". To win means you have created most awe that grab attention from most news outlets. Sure Haaland scored many goals and won a lot of trophies, but when the moment of attention in the finals was there and news outlets paid attention, he didn't dominate. Messi did in the WC with all the attention it brings and was a key figure in the final as well. That's why he won and that's why ballon d'or is not really a best player of the year award. I'm not hating on the price, nor Messi, but it's how it is and have always been and I would prefer if people understood that.

Respectfully, while Messi had an amazing world cup, he was NOT the best player year round. The Ballon D'or is based on player performance during the calendar year. While Messi (and other players such as Enzo Fernandez and Julian Alvarez) was amazing for those 4 weeks, he was far from the best player for the other 11 months. Erling Haaland 100% should've won the Ballon D'or, giving his consistency and great performances *year round* (Man City treble, first UCl for the club, Premier League top scorer, etc.).

They were playing great in a wrong time : 2010 : Wesley Sneijder won the treble, but lost to Spain in WC Finals, this probably swayed second and first votes more to Xavi and Iniesta who ranked 2nd and 3rd. Sneijder might rank higher if Netherlands win the WC, and even probably beat Messi. Iniesta and Xavi of course, have no chance of winning it due to being second to Messi in Barca. 2013 : Ribery was actually close with CR7 and Messi. You could look it up that the top three had like 24-27% votes. Messi was at his peak as well this season. 2019 : I dunno why people think VVD was robbed. Those who saw Messi this season wouldn't really think so. Pool had a bad, and as a Spurs fan, i think dodgy UCL final as well. I think personally VVD would admit Messi deserved the award that year. 2021 : Lewa was on his absolute hot form but injuries keep them from advancing close to UCL. I know it looks strange, but Barca was only 1 position below Bayern at that year in UCL. Copa America basically sealed it for Messi. Didn't help Poland was shit at Euros as well. I think Bundesliga's perception as a one-team league really hurt his chance as well. 2023 : Even if you discount his penalties, Messi's performance in WC Knockouts are just damn ridiculous and consistent. I think it's equal to 2002 R9 in that regard. We know wins in big matches sway vote strongly. Haaland actually ghosted quite a lot in semis and finals.
