Double Sided Xiangqi and Chess Board

In this video I make a double-sided chess board out of wenge and curly maple. It has a regular chess board on one side and a Xiangqi board on the other side. Xiangqi, also known as Chinese Chess, is the most played board game in the world. The Xiangqi board is composed of a grid system of 9 vertical lines (files) and 10 horizontal lines (ranks) with the pieces being played on the intersections. On each side of the board against the back edge is a palace, which is 3 by 3 lines (9 positions) with four diagonal lines that extend outward from the center forming an “X” shape. Dividing the two opposing sides of the board is a river, located between the fifth and sixth ranks. The river is marked with Chinese characters meaning "Chu River” and "Han border", a reference to the Chu-Han War. This board has the starting points of soldiers marked with inlaid triangles.

  • The curly maple on the Xiangqi side is outrageous. Amazing. Glue ups like that for me are always a tight contest between stress and impatience: if I use wood glue for a large or complex glue-up, I’m stressed out, sometimes panic, get careless and make mistakes, but at least I’ll be able to unclamp it and start finishing within an hour or a bit more; when I use slow-setting epoxy for glue-up, I’ve got all the time in the world to carefully glue up a complex piece, fix and reset joints, reconsider my clamping strategy, etc. But then I’m standing there staring at my project looking at my watch waiting for 12-24 hours to elapse before I can unclamp and finish the dang thing.

    • My last piece, incidentally, was a hand-tool built chessboard, inspired very much by your channel. It’s beautiful and I’m proud of it. I used epoxy.

      @Ian_Hay@Ian_Hay3 жыл бұрын
    • Making a chess board entirely with hand tools sounds impressive! I definitely considered using epoxy. I had planned to use Titebond Extend for this one until I discovered that the glue in my bottle had all dried up. The video was sped up by 50%, so it probably looked more stressful than it really was. I was happy that nothing went wrong.

  • On the chess board side, it's amazing how much creativity can go into what is essentially 64 squares. I don't think I've ever seen a board with wenge before, and it's beautiful! So much more texture than walnut because of the open grain. And the Xianqi board looks so cool. I want to learn more about the game now after seeing the board. Kudos. I'm sure your client will be pleased!

    @vinceearl4240@vinceearl42403 жыл бұрын

  • Wonderful how you have got al these very complicated operations into a reliable and repeatable system, even for such an extremely complex board as this! Your clamping jig is genius. One question I have is about the padouk. I have seen both padouk and purpleheart turn into pretty ugly brown after prolongued exposure to sunlight. Do you use a lacquer that resists this, or do you advise your client to avoid exposure? I will certainly try to make simpler designs using some of your methods! Thank you for all your nice videos, I wish you great succes in the future.

    @tielojongmans3826@tielojongmans38262 жыл бұрын
    • Thanks for the feedback! There's nothing I know of that will prevent padauk and purple heart from getting darker. You could use a spar varnish to block some of the UV rays and slow down the process, but it'll still happen.

  • Beautiful work!! I have one question. Do you reduce the male part of the inlay at all when you fit it into the female part? I've read other places that if you just use a mirror image it may be too large to fit properly.

    @scottkoehle5401@scottkoehle54013 жыл бұрын
    • I don't have a lot of experience dong this, but I believe the tapered sides are the key. As long as you're using the same bit for the male and female parts and you've selected the right depth settings, it should slide in easily and you push it in as far as it will go to get a right fit.

  • Hello Mike, can you please tell me if you have changed your DeWalt planer out to the helical blades in running the birds-eye maple through it? I cannot get clean planing on any boards like birds-eye or curly maple. I get really bad tear out and have heard the only fix to that is to change from straight blades to helical.

    @carpdude73@carpdude733 жыл бұрын
    • I still have the straight blades in my planer. It hasn't been too bad for me because I do the last few passes with my drum sander. I find that I get more tear out with curly maple than I do with bird's eye. I've been tempted to get a helical head but I may want to go for a larger planer and get a helical head at the same time. I've had a brand new set of blades sitting on my work bench for more than a year. At some point I'd like to see how much of a difference it makes to use really sharp blades.
