In this video I am building a chess board that could also be a cutting board if you felt like it. I made a couple chess boards a few years ago, and always wanted to do a new version and improve some aspects from my original design, so that is exactly what I did. There are a lot of interesting techniques in this one including, checkerboard veneers, mitered frames, cross lap joints, and more.

We get a lot of comments on this video about Shaun referring to the pieces as "the Horse, the Castle, and the Pointy One". Some people think he is serious (probably a vocal minority)... well let me just clear the air. He 100% thinks they are called the Horse, the Castle, and the Pointy One. I haven't had the heart to correct him, and all of your commenting won't help as he can't read, and doesn't know how to operate a computer. For the record, he also refers to the Queen, King, and Pawns, as the Mom, the Dad, and the Babies respectively.
Why did I stubble upon this video to see this response the same day it was posted🤣🤣🤣 y'all some trolls I love it.
hello
I see Shaun is a pro at chess
Its GM language
Aww that’s sad it breaks my heart
Drilling out the bottoms of the pieces and glueing in a lead weight would be a cool addition.
Yeah, I know that is fairly common. Might be something I try if I ever do these again.
@Gary Lau That's more of a travel board feature. It's kind of annoying to have pieces sticking to a regular tabletop board.
Exactly my thoughts. Would do a lot for the feel of the board.
Yeah and some felt on the bottom of the pieces so they don’t make too much noise
Great idea
That smirk when you were about to say to "Chess I can" was priceless.
Haha I agree, I love it :D Totally reminds me of Phil from Modern Family xD
Haha, it is hard to keep a straight face with puns that bad!
@@shaunb66 the pun's so cheese its and instant classic!!! love it ::)

@@nickcecil3510 Same dude and im watching on my phone!
Man I got in here twice! Screw it, let's make it the 6 eyes channel. It would be the perfect fit, one ridiculously good looking guy and two tall thin guys with baseball hats. The Thickni Guy and the Foureyes Guys.
Shaun and I might be tall and skinny, but if you look close, we are varying degrees of Thickni
Do it!
@@Foureyes.Furniture your slimni is definitely variable
Hey Chris, little thing I think would make this set a lot better: you can drill a shallow hole at the bottom of each piece and add a metal piece to make the pieces weighted.
and make is magnetic to snap in place
@@bigbxlls woah thats a good idea
@@bigbxlls that would let the cess board be projected on a screen if the magnets can send info
The original was great already, I loved the geometric chess pieces on that one, but the changes to this one are definitely an improvement!
Happy to hear that! Thanks!

Wow! Just wow! This so imaginative and beautiful. Thank you for sharing the build
This is really beautiful. Gives me hope I can one day do one. The complicated turning of many sets intimidates me and I don’t have a lathe. This is on the future projects list for sure. Thanks.
"The horse, the castle, and the pointy one!"
In his defense even Hikaru calls it a horse sometimes

i call castling castle so i was weirded out and said thats a move though

DUDE! I want to make a chess set and already had kind of an idea for what I wanted the pieces to look like and you've pretty much done exactly what I was thinking!
I love it! You make so many great stuff Shaun!
I bought this as a gift for my friend kzhead.infoUgkxcZqgZ8Ynkiz5n_LxIWRlAicuzmz5kCHG who is just starting out in the world of wood work. He loves it!! There is a great section on different wood and what to use for what kind of job and a similar section for tools as well. The projects in it are things you probably would have a go at with clear instructions, pictures, videos and diagrams throughout. Great for a beginner/amateur wood worker.
I absolutely love the aesthetic of the squared, sort of abstracted pieces.
Shaun just listing off things to set on the edge made my day, no idea why, but it was great.
!!!
very nice! usually I am not a big fan of blocky chess set style but this one looks good (next one maybe you think about felting the pieces and also weighting them - chess players love that and are likely to pay way more money)
I've been planning to do a group project with some friends on making a chess board so I wanted to watch this to get an idea and some inspiration and this video was amazing and the end result was also very good.
Great video! This couldn’t be better timing as I just finished The Queen’s Gambit and I’m ready to make a chess board.
That pun at the beginning instantly earned you a subscriber
that is really nice work!
Really appreciate it, man! Thanks!
very nicely done, thank you for sharing that. I like the simple, clean design of the pieces, almost a Bauhaus style.
Excellent idea with squared pieces! Very nice contrast.. beautiful looking board. Chess, lad's!
The most beautifull chess pieces ever. Congrats, from Brasil.
I love the design of those chess pieces. Gorgeous.
Thanks Nate!
Hey lucy, trans rights?(and sorry if thats your deadname above me if you are trans"
@@shaunb66 are you real?
I love the pieces and the simplicity of their make. I'm going to steal this for my set :)
Beautiful build and chessboard! Love the simple pieces, and how easy it is to tell which piece they represent. Great design!
Really appreciate that! I am really happy with how they came out.
Yes -- it's surprising how good design overcomes the natural bias towards traditional shapes. I once played on a highly stylized set made from round and square hollow metal cylinders. The crenellated tops of the kings and queens locked together -- with all the other pieces and pawns nested securely inside! I was fully prepared to find fault with such a radical departure from the traditional -- but like yours seems to be, it was easy and fun to use . . .
Amazing job man, it looks beautiful. my next project is a chess board and am looking for ideas and techniques so you’ve definitely helped a little, am getting better at building and video making as my channels pretty new. Nice though
wow, man! This is just awesome! I wish I had a workshop like yours. Mine is small and I work the few basic tools I have. I can make nice stuff but make something like this is not for me. Well done man, I have watched this video with much admiration.
Thank you! It is definitely nice to have a well-equipped shop.
Pretty clever to make the pieces with the table saw. I like using the pencil to hold those small parts, I am going to adopt that technique. Nice video thanks.
I've always wanted to make a board specifically to make the pieces on the lathe, but I love the design of yours. Very cool.
Nice upgrades, Shawn! I remember the original boards you posted. I made a board out of plywood about a year ago...really need to make some pieces for it though and I think I might poach your designs...really like them.
Thanks Stan! Yeah, making the pieces might be my favorite part. Go for it!
Just beautiful. Love the original design of the pieces. Felt in the storage area is a nice touch. Maybe weight and felt the bottom of the pieces? Top notch!!
I love modern style chess pieces. Great work!
Amazing wood work... nice finishing.. I will love to have such chessboard.. Really fantastic work and creativity u did.. Good bless you..
Love the video and the chess set. My 6 year old says he knows this will be his "next" project, though I'll let you know, it'd be his first. He was really inspired by this build.
That is awesome to hear!
How’d the chess set turn out?
I love the stylized pieces. Instantly recognizable as exactly which ones they are but not over designed. I wish I could buy them somewhere they would go well with most any board.
Amazon sells something similar. Search geometric chess pieces on Amazon
@@aadipattanaik7778 not really
I mixed up the king and the queen, but that happens a lot with custom chess pieces lol
It's simply gorgeous. I want it !!

This is so beautiful. It looks ancient yet futuristic.
great idea and design is awesome! very appreciate for sharing your video! Thank you very much!😍
Excellent work. I wish I had the time and tools to try to make a set like this.
Ah yes, my favorite chess piece The *pointy* one Jokes aside it is actually very well made, thumbs up.
Nah the horse is better, especially at the very beginning of the game
The pointy one goes to c4 and checkmate in one move
I want this chess set! Absolutely love the aesthetic of it. How much would you charge for a set just like it?
Handmade sets like that are in the price range of 200-300 dollars! 😮
I’m impressed ! Great work !
Loved it. Thank you.

Hello! When I saw your movie, I smiled 🙂 we made chessboards at the same time! Mine is simple - I have a son (3.5 years). It's a gift for him.... I prefer round figures, but yours are cool too. Good idea - where to hide the figures! Greetings from Poland! Paul
That is awesome! Thanks Paul!
@@shaunb66 The truth is that if someone loves DIY, he is not afraid of challenges. It's an interesting idea to spend an afternoon in the workshop! And then what a joy when dad plays with his son! Folding chessboards are more popular in Europe. I will do as you do. A box under the checkerboard! One question. What two types of wood are best to use? Walnut and maple? Have a nice day! It's midday here :)
@@PaweKrajewski I completely agree! The challenge of trying something new, is one of the best parts. I used Walnut and Maple for mine since that combo has a lot of contrast, but I'm sure some other wood types would look great together, as well.
Absolutely brilliant design. I love the simple yet awesome pieces.
Really appreciate it! Thanks Brett.
@@shaunb66 I don't suppose it would be alright with you if I copied (well mostly copied) the design? :) Not for profit of course but still.

pure artistry, you're a clever guy.
Seriously Fan Girl crushing on Shaun 🤭🤭🤭. That cheeky grin 😊😌🤭
Haha! It is too hard to keep a straight face.
Really a beautiful piece of work, Shawn. What about the rule we're always preached about veneering both sides of a board or it will warp? Looks like you guys are always breaking the rules. It also looked like you were channelling Chris at scrapsketball again, especially at the beginning.
Thanks William! Yeah, I thought about veneering the other side, but honestly it came down to laziness and time constraints. I did finish both sides, and it is going to a friend, so if it goes wonky on him, I can always fix it.
Just discovered your channel and I love it
wish I could do that, even with all that equipment to would be beyond me, nice work.

I like your chess pieces designs. I've seen some where it isn't immediately apparent what piece a piece is. Yours, no such problem.
So what’s happened to Sean? Has he been christened?
Haha, maybe something like that.
there's something zen-like in Shaun's vids. can't have enough, don't @ me, lol. music is great, as always. the project? oh, sorry, I was meditating... but, honestly, projects on this channel are on point: stylish, aesthetic, sleek!
