Power over spice is power over all... "laughs evily over the kitchen spice rack"
😂
This was my first thought when the film started 😂
OMG😂😂😂😂😂😂☠☠
Hmm, I was expecting something like "Enthousiastic Dutch noises" 😉
Portuguese Empire moment:
I just find it interesting how all of this is happening while Shaddam is chilling at his summer home on Kaitain. Like, he’s not even at his actual palace doing Emperor business. He’s just chilling with his daughter, avoiding the tension, obeying his shame and guilt.
I swear to god the shot at 4:30 is straight off of the cover of a 60's sci-fi novel. Fucking astonishing.
Best Sci-Fi film in 20 years
Blade runner 2049 was also fantastic ❤
Which being the previous one 20 years ago ? I want to give it a watch.
Nah arrival
aliens, terminator 2, blade runner, district 9, the matrix, looper, inception. only a 10 year old would say this is the best in 20 years.
@@colbykitto4597Arrival was terrible
Christopher Walken, an actor known for his peculiar speaking pattern, given very little to say
His character is a dangerous person, danger is most horrific when it is silent...he gave an amazing performance and they used his presence well, we didnt see or heard him once in the first movie, but his actions talked enough, that to me is what true presence means
It shows again that Walken is a brilliant Actor, capable of saying legions with just his face.
MAHD!?
There was rumors Mads Mikkelsen was to play the Emperor at one point. He would have been a better choice.
@@lapineeeI’m not sure I’d buy him as an 80 yr old under heavy spice laden plastic surgery, personally.
"Harkonnens never scared me...Atreides do...because they're popular!"
Yup, that's the answer for the people who wondering why emperor allowed to give harkonen much more power than other, no matter how strong they where, the great house will never accept harkonen as ruler, but attreides is different, more than half of great house as attreides supporters so there very high chance attreides will dethroned corinos as news empire house
@@abdulcholik7789 That's not true, the Bene Gesserit's plan was to put a Harkonnen on the throne, since Feyd's son was supposed to Rule. The emperor was cucked the moment he didn't have a male heir. House Corrino was going to lose the throne regardless.
One thing I never understood when reading the books and watching the movies. The Emperor was getting old, and knew his time was coming to an end. Thinking house Atreides may one day be a threat to him, why wouldn't he forge an alliance and want to embrace the idea of marrying his daughter to Paul, in order to ensure succession, rather than risk tyranny as a result of the Harkonnens gaining too much power? If you knew you had to find a successor to the throne through marriage of your daughter, why would he not consider an honorable house like Atreides and Paul from the get-go?
"The Emperor's a jealous man...."
Crusader Kings player spotted.
The Bene Gesserit planned the fall of House Atreides
Shaddam loved Leto like a son, but his fear, pride, and jealousy had overwriten that. I think Baron Harkonnen had been whispering on Shaddam's ear, warning him of Leto's growing popularity, the strength of his House, and the threat it poses to the Corrino Dynasty. Plus Leto was probably too old to marry Irulan.
In the end, the Emperor was but a puppet of the Bene Gesserit. They had decided the Atreides had to go, and so they set things in motion.
Sardaurkar' quote in the beginning was awesome in theaters.
It absolutely set the tone for the experience!
Hollywood needs auteurs like Villeneuve more than ever
not a native English speaker had to Google what auteurs is.. have to agree with you we need more filmmakers like him
I think the emperor actually did love leto as a son but was also was worried about his popularity amongst the other houses I don't believe he would have done anything if that hooded old lady hadn't manipulated the Man some time's lack of action is the best coarse that way one wouldn't invite an action that would cost lives
The best way to manipulate someone is to nurture a thought that is already in their mind.
The fact that he told them to stay there! Lol! For what? Die?! 😂
Some dude say "Stilgar is testing the Atreides or maybe trying to kill Jessica" My Guess he was right and the Atreides are safe in the Rock because all soldiers fly Up 😂
I hope Villeneuve gets to adapt RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA as soon as possible
I think he is making Dune 3 and is difficult Weird sh1t happen he never explain the Navigators or the Bene Treilax And the plot with Chani looks bad I Hope he made 4 hours 😂
Well, his next movie is Dune 3, so not in a while. But Nolan, a great director as well, was also busy for a while with a Batman trilogy
He reminds me of a man I once saw on a boat off of the coast of Florida. I did a LOT of swimming that day, fifteen hours worth.
explain, please.
This was a great opening to Dune 2. Seeing Paul, Jessica and their Freemen allies eluding the Harkonnens. Good to see Christopher Walker and Florence Pugh as Shaddam IV and Irulan.
The sci-fi epic of our generation, absolutely phenomenal, must be experienced in IMAX to comprehend the sheer scale of this masterpiece.
And they call us toxic cult.
The Baron floating around like a balloon always cracks me up
The sequences with the human Embryo (here and again at the very end of the film where Jessica is talking to unborn Alia) are really jarring but in a good way. Gives perspective to the horrors that are taking place outside, and also how messed up what happened to Alia was in the end
Paul fights the Grineer in the desert.
To stay alive
The harkonnen really had the grineer vibe. Especially with their gutteral language
@@CBRN-115 Big time.
Considering they have Dirty water Yeah 😂
"Power over spice is power over all" honestly, the first 5 minutes told me all I needed to know that this movie was going to be special
Jean Tatlock was really dissapointed with Oppenheimer if she had to travel half the universe to a whole new planet and assume a new identity as the daughter of padishah emperor Shaddam IV Corrino.
As it was written
He said He Needed more Cow Bell
lmfao...
Indeed it needed it
One of the problems with Dune is we know what roles the main characters play and their personalities, but the emperor and his daughter have always been sort of an enigma--they play important parts, but we don't know what personalities they represent. The Jodorowsky Dune that was never made was to have Salvador Dali and Amanda Lear (a singer who was close to Dali). Dali supposedly would have worked only an hour for an enormous sum of money and would do whatever he wanted. It's a good thing it was never made. Jose Ferrer turned in a professional performance as a still in control monarch, but Virginia Madsen seemed to be there to narrate and then marry Paul but not much else. The 2000 mini-series (featuring some of the most comical costume choices of all time) the emperor was just an angry man and Irulan was another cast member. Villeneuve I think finally gave us an emperor and Irulan with purpose. Irulan is somewhat Nancy Drew trying to figure out what her father is up to, and becoming a power behind the throne. I'm assuming in this universe only male heirs can become emperor so the emperor is facing an inevitable end game of losing power. He has Leto killed for becoming too popular but faces he lost a surrogate son. In the few lines he has Walken's distinct vocal cadence and mannerisms emphasize his situation, an enfeebled old man clinging to control.
This entire opening sequence felt like a moebius love letter
01:49 - THE GOLD! Harkonnens are such badass house! 🙆
I was expecting the emperor to have that iconic Christopher Walken voice.
“For i know he loved duke leto like a son”….. now, I cant quite put my finger on it, but something tells me that might not be true
And the Emperor said............... "I GOT A FEVER!!!"
For COWBELL SPICE !
Christopher Walken brings an immediate sense of unbelievability.
"Power over spice is power over all." (Snorts cayenne pepper, basil, thyme, dill, garlic powder, cumin, oregano, chili powder, basil, cinnamon, onion power, crushed rosemary, coriander, cardamom, sesame seed, parsley flakes, curry powder and paprika.)
My nutmeg will never be the same again....
I wonder what game the Emperor and Irulan are playing. Probably some kind of chesslike, like the "cheops" game mentioned in the glossary.
Gosh i am going to Watch it again tomorrow for the 4th😂 times
The opening music needed more cow bell.
Anyone else notice the similarities between the opening of this movie, and the beginning of the VNV Nation song Electronaut (from 2002)?
"Dreams are messages from the deep"
I haven't watched either of the Dune movies nor read the books. I just played the game since it's release back then. Far more fulfilling. Now there's Open Dune II... but anyway from what i saw of the synopsis, this movie though gave great visuals, maybe, still seem like an ordinary oh-so-common Indian tamil movie about marriage conflicts and enemies to me. That is, minus the fantasies. 😁🤣🤣
Not gonna lie. When I first found out that Christopher Watkin was going to be the emperor, I was actually kind of annoyed not because he’s a bad actor far from it. He’s one of the best in his craft. But because I felt that being the emperor wasn’t really, a fitting character for him it wasn’t important enough. I felt that he probably should’ve been a much more powerful individual. Yes being the emperor of “the known universe“ may seem like they are extremely powerful. But we all know that the people or individuals with the real power in this universe Are the spacing guild. Aside from obviously the individuals undertaking the stewardship of Arakis. Again, don’t get me wrong. Christopher Walken is a great actor. And as I have already said, he’s one of the best. But again I just felt that the Emperor was almost like a disservice to him. But he pulled it off well.
Master Piece and IMAX Magic trick
My cuz, Chris, is legendary
Gundam Seed Freedom Poster Reference.
4:05 why did he tell them to stay while the enemy is approaching ?
at this point stilgar probably didn't want to believe paul was the messiah, so if they died to the patrol then that solves one problem, also to see if they could carry their weight (my interpretation)
something else I just thought of was using the two of them as bait for the ambush
WB Legendary Dune 2 Dune 1965 by Frank Herbert =a book
its too bad the emperor is a minor character in this film they should should have made an extended edition . Peter Jackson was still filming extra scenes even after the film was released.
"Little blue fuckers...about this high." --Emperor Shaddam IV
Christopher Walken was also in the orginal 1984 Dune film lol
Never understood why the Emperor never took full control of Dune. It showed it some in the old movie but not in the new ones but the Emperor has always had trouble with the spacing guild and IX. They always viewed him as a figure head.
I think the geopolitical setup was just a plot device rather than a reflection of reasonable reality. For one, the control of Dune seems very weak given its significance. No satellite or drone presence. The Fremen don’t have force fields so the soldiers could engage with lasguns which means their tactics would be much different than shown.
@@ryanhughes1101 well, in the books. Shields made the worms go ape shit crazy. Ground forces would be eaten. Plus, it seemed like shields were pretty useless in the movie. Everything that was fired would go through them. You are right about the plot device though. Seems like a hole that someone as smart as Frank or his son would notice.
But the Harkonnen attack didn't take everyone by surprise. Leto had an idea, the Harkonnens knew, the Sardaukar knew, the Emperor knew....the Bene Gesserit knew.
Leto expected something, but not that early. What more was the sudden betrayal by Yu Wei that nobody saw coming. Hence, it was a surprise 🤷♀️ We don't get the reactions of the other major Houses, but I'd assume they were rather surprised Atreides was just gone in a night
Man, even the clips are twice as long as other movies
I get it that they decided to use Alia as a pre-born more, but I don't think they should've hurry the story in order to fit it into few months. After all, controlling their bodies is what Bene Gesserit do by default, it is safe to assume that they can slow down the pregnancy rate until it is safe to bear a child
Masterpiece
HOT TAKE: I think this is the best opening scene in the movies in this century. I love ir so much. Firstly, it's looks absolutely beatiful and very atmospheric. Insane shots. Insane soundtrack and amazing unique atsmosphere. It'a literally amazing scene for understanding this lore. Dramatic, epic, futurustic, complex and variety lore. Secondly, before Arrakis, how they perfectly showed the Emperor and his reaction to Leto's death, it was very accurate. Shaddam loved Leto as his son, but still he strove for power and therefore killed him, which was very painful for him as a man. Walken did amazing job. Same like Pugh. Just 2 minutes moment, but amazing adaptation
25 seconds of logos
We need a show.
"The end of House Atreides" and the beginning of the galactic JIHAD. OOPS!
Why does Walken look like Magneto in the thumbnail?
Malkovich would have been a better emperor but Walken does good
'You weak, pathetic, fool." Shao Kahn
Need more cowbell.
As written !
This series (because that is what it is, it’s just not for TV) moves apart from anything Frank Herbert ever conceived. Good luck with that.
Imo, the sci-fi series captured the story very well. These movies haven’t “ felt right” to me
Wow looks really good
Walken was wasted by Deni. 😢
It proves humanity doesn't improve
1:28 and the emperor said nothing you idiots duke leto’s dead he’s locked in his own basement
I do believe it is Leto II speaking the opening words in both films. His recorded voice at least.
Can Walken play any other character than Walken? Zero depth.
Sleep well Christopher, you are sorely missed!
What are you talking about?
You're calling. Those worms. All wrong...wrong tone. You need more cowbell.
I've read the book, seen the other treatments, seen the clips of this one. I don't think it adds anything so I won't be paying to see it in full. Reading the book and using your imagination is more powerful than any movie. Old school.
books and even first version were vastly superior to this movie.
@@keithwalker5078 don't larp
it's good cinema that happens to be an adaptation
Walken was disastrously miscast here.
Should have gone Mads Mikkelsen as he was on the cards at one point.
"Wait here" was terrible advice
Reverend Mother Mohiam played on the Emperor's weaknesses to manipulate him - the standard Bene Gesserit control tactic. Shaddam was insecure, jealous, and fearful and that was used to overcome his love for Duke Leto. Remember - Leto never married Jessica specifically as a political ploy to remain "eligible" for potential marital alliances with one of the other houses. He never intended to go through with it and in the end regretted not marrying Jessica. Shaddam was manipulated with his own frailties into using house Harkonnen to eliminate the one house that truly would have supported him as Emperor. Duke Leto would never have broken faith with Shaddam, but Shaddam was corrupt and could not believe everyone else wasn't just as corrupt.
the emperor was actually pretty nice he respected and treat leto 1 like a son but his jealousy and hunger for power hunt him forever
I have loved this film and the other renditions. I have read the book a couple of times now. This new Dune film is probably the best of all the screen adaptations. However, my one criticism is Christopher Walken as the Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV. Mr Walken is a great actor but in this role, he seemed more like an out dated hippy that never grew out of it all. I liked the other emperors from the other adaptations better. Apart from that one personnel issue, the two latest part one and two films are splendid. 😀👍
Back in the mid-eighties me and my brothers Ricky and Randy got drunk and dropped a shit ton of acid cause Randy said it would go bad in the heat and we seen Dune and it was fuckin awesome but also scary because I had no idea worms got that huge and we were tripping pretty hard like I said. After we seen the movie we went out to the beach to drink and shit and Ricky starts stompin his foot an I says wtf are you even doing and Ricky says he’s calling worms. So now I’m flipping out because I ain’t going out that way and Randy starts beating on Ricky but he’s trying to do it quiet and without rhythm because of the worms. It was pretty fd up because we were tripping so bad and that movie freaked me out and also we were drinking and that was the first night I huffed gas. It was a f’d up entire day really. That summer Ricky got knocked out by a donkey kick and rolled into the cow pond and drowned. It was kind of funny because the pond is full of cow shit and bullheads but also not funny cause I miss him. This comment is dedicated to him. I think he would have liked the new Dune and gotten really drunk.
snore
Omg i cant believe even this short clip, got me bored
Great movies, but y'ah know, some stuff not adding up. Like why didn't the Fremen leave Arrakis? What was they fighting for? There was nothing they could do with the spice. They didn't even use the spice. What were they fighting for? The planet was technically inhabitable. What were the Fremen eating? What crops could grow on that planet? Basically few. What animals could they eat? It was a wrap. Why didn't they find another planet to live on? The story ain't adding up. 🤷🏾♂
Has anyone else noticed that Zendaya is not a very good actor?
Zendaya is way overrated
Actually not even that. She's another Hollywood plant for whatever agenda they wanna push
Been saying it for a decade.
Update: I've been watching a few clips in anticipation of Dune 2, and I would like to double down: She's a bad actor. Distractingly bad. How do these people get into these movies? I thought there was a process? There are people whose sole job is to pick good actors for movies. You've seen those "you had one job" memes? Like the road stripe that goes over the dead armadillo? Well, Zendaya is the Hollywood equivalent of that.
Christopher Walken as the Emperor is mis casted
I don't like how the emperor is depicted in this film. He loks like an alzheimer patient. In the David Lynch film he is strait away a powerful consiprancy plotter. In the 2000 miniseries, he is a powerful aristocrat. Both those old performances conveyed that the emperor is a vilain with immense power. Cristopher Walken is a fantastic actor to play vilains. But this interpetation of the emperor make us pitty him.

zendaya good actress , but not in this movie
I hate Florence p so bad !
God Zendaya is terrible.
🤢
It would have been great if these actors were actually good, and if the characters actually reminded of the ones in the book. Unfortunately billions dollar productions as a rule cannot be authentic or reality might break. It is known.
Too many comedies. Too much parody. I can't take Christopher Walkens old face seriously and he sticks out like a sore thumb in this film imo. They should've cast literally anybody else in the role of The Emperor
So much cut out, too much changed. Beyond disappointment.

Christopher Walken was bad casting. Mediocre film.
The emperor in the book was in his seventies but didn't look a day older than 30-35. He was bad casting indeed
You can hear him quivering typing this trash take 😂
Walken should play trump in next movie: traitor of the nation
