It's not like they showed us a scene of Amerie and Harper agreeing not to reveal that she was also part of it, so that she doesn't suffer too. Amerie just assumes all the blame and Harper never says anything at all! She just stood there seeing how they defenestrate amerie for it right in front of her! and she just lets all the attacks go to Amerie. I feel like the writers are gaslighting us with that... Like... • I actually really like that spencer and ant are not black and white. They act like immature and ignorant boys and do problematic shit but you can still tell that they arent just "incels". For example they supported malakais and rowans relationship without a second thought. They still hang out with their "enemies" during camp and treat them like friends. At the end of the they they dodnt do anything thats beyond forgivness like chook and Its WAY more realistic for them to be this way and make us constantly flip between supporting and hating them.

  • I'm autistc and seeing accurate representation with an autistic actor playing that character makes me so unbelievably happy. I love quinni so much and because of that one critique of the second season i have is im so angry that darren didn't apologise to quinni for what they said to her at the zoo about the world playing by her rules. Being autistic in todays society is so exhausting and we have to mask constantly and it ruins out mental health and to see darren say something so ignorant towards quinni really made me mad, especially after how good they were to quinni in season 1. I really don't like that quinni was the one to apologise just for unmasking and darren didn't apologise at all.

    • I completely, 100% agree with this. Something felt off about that whole situation to me and I didn't realize it until now, but this is exactly it. As an autistic person myself I've spent the majority of my life apologizing to others for my own struggling, and seeing Quinny do the same thing broke my heart a little bit. I don't think Darren is a bad person and I think that they have good intentions the majority of the time, but they are selfish a lot of the time, and I hated the way that that affected Quinny this season.

  • I didn’t mind Spider development this season, as it’s the character realising that he needs to do better - on his own; by the end. I think it’s less Spider changing for a girl. But, Spider having positive influences outside of his less than stellar ones. Missy tells him - earlier in the season - that he doesn’t have to be that person. Just because it how people expect, or assume, him to be or behave. While Jojo tells him the actions have more meaning. I think he internalises those lessons, in the finale. By actively getting up; saying that he doesn’t want anything from anyone. But, he’s going to change. While he was trying to change - prior to that. He pointed that change in the wrong direction. Outwards, rather than inwards. But, it’s not Missy who makes Spider ‘change’; Spider is always the one who wants to make the active choice to change. He just needed to refocus where that change needed to occur. Hopefully Season Three will explore Spider - outside of his relationship with Missy - making those changes.

    @Andy.Pandy97@Andy.Pandy9721 күн бұрын
  • I really liked how you discussed Spider’s storyline! I found it interesting that Spider wasn’t able to get…well…*ahem* “physically excited” with Missy until he finally let go and allowed himself to be fully vulnerable with her? I think the writers in initially implied that he couldn’t do any intimate activity because of his mother resenting him for the dream she had of him assaulting a woman. You were right in saying he internalized this, and subconsciously convinced himself that he was capable of such a terrible act: almost as if his brain was ‘afraid’ to get excited because his mother had emphasized that his genitalia was a weapon. When he finally let go of this, he was able to fully give himself to Missy.

Especially since we see at the very beginning what happens at formal. So we find out in episode like 5 or 6 its Rowan and then just spend the rest of the season waiting for it. • As an autistic asexual seeing such representation is so refreshing. The scene especially that made me cry was when Cash talks to his nan about how he feels essentially broken and that hes always going to be a burden in relationships because of his asexuality. It was such a needed thing to explore in media, and God I wish this was around for younger me to experience. I will say, I was wary at first regarding how they would tackle an asexual/allosexual relationship dynamic, and the part where Darren went off to get sex instead of talking through the problems with Cash and kept putting off conversations did really annoy me but in the end i think it worked out well and I hope if theres a season 3 it will explore them more. It really has a brilliant start of showing an asexual relationship in media in which we dont usually get much representation. I will say though, Dustys comment that "dont you think its selfish to expect him to drop all his desires" was very hurtful to hear myself and so thats really made me dislike his character even more than what i felt originally. But the scene where they have an intimate moment in the forest in their own way was absolutely beautiful. It also did an amazing job at showing that not all asexuals are sex repulsed which is such a common misconception and never explored. But yeah i really want more communication between Cash and Darren if they continue their relationship.

  • I hate the development for Malakai the most, in s1 they made it seem like he was dealing with racism but never fully invested into it. Which is fine bc he’s more than just black but it seemed like it was just a set up for him to question his sexuality (leading to the threesome). Bc suddenly it was no longer about his race and besides the forced connection between him and missy (something that barely gets developed), the writers completely move on to him being bi. They never explored what he’s going through and instead force silence onto him. We never see him connect with anyone on a deeper level nor does he express his feelings about his sexuality or race. I would love for them to stop glossing over his struggles and actually commit to something when they mention it.

    @zeekly@zeekly22 күн бұрын
    • That’s a great take. I hadn’t thought about it like it until now… the description of aboriginality and racism in S1 does seem a bit glossed over. Like, he just needed to go to country (not cheapening the meaning of country for Aboriginal people at all, it was mostly what the show depicted it as), and then he was okay again. What!? It was a two minute scene. That’s clearly not reflective of real life, although, it did drive a lot of his future as a result. However, saying that, I’m glad that it was explored, even if it was cheap. I hope that S3 has a bit more of an exploration of this.

    • I really agree! I find it frustrating bc the show understandably continues Harper's arc in dealing with her assault, but it completely drops Malakai dealing with racism, his sexuality, and the threesome, which, like many others, I agree veers into sexual assault territory. I feel like the show is only interested in Malakai's dating life, which is annoying bc he's the only main character whose interiority isn't just as much a part of his character, which, like, why? He's so interesting and rich and complex, and it really sours Mardi Gras episode, bc why go out of your way to show a realistic event with a police officer and show one episode of Malakai struggling with it, and then not deal with it ever again? It feels cheap bc the show is otherwise pretty good at unpacking and continuing to show the effects of what the teens go through. And I just haaaaate how the threesome was only mentioned in s2 in funny ways and, like you said, as set-up for his sexuality, and it's never again framed as something that happens while Malakai is drunk, high, right off a break-up and fight with Amerie, and most vitally, right after he's ASSAULTED by a POLICE OFFICER. Anyway. Thank you for voicing this so well bc it's my biggest problem with season 2!!

His circle was an echo chamber and mother was a bad representation of feminism, so Missy offered the possibility of accountability and restoration. Patriarchy hurts men too while disgusing itself as something to benefit men. I think the confusion for a man to be exposed to these "alpha male, feminism is making men weak" tropes are real and it was nice to see a relatively realistic exploration of that confusion and that there is still time to change for the better.

  • Rowan really was just having a mental health episode. I think it was all a psychotic frenzy to get back at Amerie. We see he was hallucinating his brother the whole time and every step was just to get at amerie. Even at the pit filled with all those boy’s secrets, Rowan’s was to forget her. I don’t want him back for the next season it’s a little too hinged for me and I hope the plot leads to him going to a psych unit. But they did Malaki so DIRTYYYY like oh my god. The letter burning in the end killed me. And Sasha I think that’s just her character right now to be super pc and an activist but be lazy and fake about it. Hopefully we see her one day be genuine with it all. They skipped out on Harper I think. I agree that we really don’t see her cope with all this. Even with ca$h being dropped off by chook she barely reacted when seeing him.

And it's not like we haven't seen him do crazy shit before, he literally pinned Malakai to a wall and threatened him, did all the crazy dead bird stuff, has vivid hallucinations of his dead brother, and locked Amerie and Harper in a room in a burning building with smoke coming in. • tbh, I think the backstory with Amerie and Rowan makes sense and I think it kind of highlights how he has mental health issues and obviously the writers like kind of make it known that it’s not even Amerie‘s fault and Rowan also comes to that realization later on as well. I think it shows like how complex grieving can be, and how a lot of times when people are grieving they always try to put the blame on someone and instead of having to carry all that hurt and think it’s his fault he blamed Amerie. in my opinion, I don’t think it was anyone’s fault he couldn’t have known that his brother was going to die from the car crash and obviously Amerie didn’t kill his brother it’s just like a chain of events. Rowan was definitely a character that we weren’t expecting the season, but I think that’s kind of what made this season Kind of exciting since it had like a mystery aspect to it. it also shows how Rowan kinda grows as a person towards the end a little (maybe not grow as a person), but he does come to the realization that he shouldn’t be blaming people and that he shouldn’t have taken it this far, I just think it’s really interesting to see characters that have mental health issues portrayed even if they are somewhat villainess because it just shows how your mental health can really affect yourself and other people.

In the first season was made clear that Darren wasn't confortable living with their mother and her bf and their father is meant to be in book tour (aka plot excuse for his character to disapear). But we didn't even got to see into Quinni's homelife even when she almost died and was on rest for a few weeks! And what about Amerie's mom? What did she feel about Harper moving out? About her daughter campaign? I think that the seasons need a couple more episodes, so characters like Missy or Ant get a chance to be fleshed out and to allow more appaerances of family and work life, without it being a distraction from the main plots and characters.

  • sasha turned into a charicature this season, which takes away her label of being just a normal progressive teenager making misconceptions with her autistic girlfriend. she was really over the top with the bigotry accusations to the point where she got really irritating. but I think the actress pulled this off in a humorous way though. Rowan on the other hand just straight up annoyed me. he's manipulating a girl who has only little influence over his trauma ( that is in fact, nobody's fault), and wanted to project it onto her because he couldn't learn to deal with his own trauma. I felt incredibly sorry for brother's passing, but at the same time, everyone was just a kid. no need to sl-t shame or put bird c-rpses on her belongings to terrify her. but do I think his character makes sense? yes! do I think he belongs in heartbreak high? yes! but do I think he should've been this obstacle in malakai and amerie's relationship? no. I was really excited for some more amerie and malakai, but we don't really get that, except for some really uncomfortable love triangle drama. also why does amerie have to be mentally tormented every season because somebody can't open up about their trauma? I can somewhat understand for Harper in season 1, but season 2??

I think he should've dealt with how he lashed out last season and decided whether that was good for him or not, and then it would've felt like last season existed lol. Then, Missy as a love interest in s3 like after he did some work on his own would've been perfect. Also I wanted way more Am and Harper this season. I want them best friends back. We got some of that, but like...this show moves so fast. Harper and Ant should've been friends this season, no something else underneath. More of everything from Malachi, he always gets shafted in the second half of the seasons...Rowan I just didn't need at all lol, like there is enough going on here miss

Spider's arc is definitely a bit iffy for me too but I can see him as someone that always wanted to change and just needed a little push and Missy was that push for him. I was a iffy about it at first when he only started to change because of her but I think after that he did realize that he didn't want to be that person he used to be anymore. I feel like somewhere there he realized that people on both sides can be really extreme(his mom and Voss) and that's what really prompted his final growth but that's just what I personally interpreted. I think Darren was allowed to move out because his dad was on a book signing trip or something. They mentioned something like that.

So the three of swords is heartbreak, grief and loss (The fortune teller then interprets heartbreak with betrayal so we'll work with that). In the first season we got Amerie's betrayal to Harper, in the second season we got Rowan's loss. Maybe in the third season we get someone's grief, possibly Amerie's. Or Rowan is grief and maybe the 3d season is about loss but I don't think so.

  • I tried to be open to Missy/Spider, but like ... so annoyed that Missy getting more screentime is completely hinged on Spider's character, while Spider gets to have the romance, AND exploration of his home life, AND a huge arc about reckoning with who he was and who he wants to be. What about Missy? What about her home life, her changing relationship with Sasha maybe, or a deeper look into her friendship with Malakai beyond a few funny scenes? Missy's character is used entirely for Spider's character and I'm not here for that. And idk, I liked Spider in season 1, there was the perfect amount of him, he was shitty and funny and everyone gave him the crap that he deserved. It felt realistic. Then, in season 2, they give him this man-hating mom to explain why he is the way he is and have him make a speech against women when Missy slights him, making it seem like, he doesn't REALLY believe the shit he spews but it's a defence mechanism and a response to his mother's hatred or whatever which is like ... idk, I think Spider does believe it. Or at least, he's interesting BECAUSE he buys into it. The show is all, "Spider, you don't have to choose to be an asshole" which is correct, but it feels like they didn't want to commit to him THINKING actual incel thoughts (and racist thoughts, like, hello, remember his comment about how Malakai shouldn't have provoked that cop?) so they conflate his behaviour with him being a dick instead, but no! He's sexist! He genuinely thinks the school has it out for white straight guys! I wish the show committed to him having to UNLEARN his unhealthy and inappropriate thoughts about sex, women, race, etc, rather than frame him as someone who needs to learn to be kinder. I also just hate that he gets to have this whole journey but Sasha is relegated to a side character unworthy of exploration or growth, but I digress.

Considering that the new guy was so upset with what she did he took batshit revenge, I think the show has been implying for a while that Amerie spearheaded as the ult mean girl of the school. Look at her friends, while cool, all have bitchy tendencies. And I think the point is that we are seeing Amerie now as learning to care more for people, but I think the hate she gets is because she didn't always used to be reasonable or kind. Thinking back to season one, when Dareen almost didn't befriend her, it was clear he saw her as a bitch. The map was her and harper, yes, but it was a terrible thing to do. She abandoned Malakai (not like she knew what to do) but like Harper had said, its what she does. She bails. And then we saw that come full circle with new farm boy because he literally was bullied and isolated after amerie. While I Dont condone harm, I think that being pissed at someone who then you ignore then to have them literally try to break up (and suceeed) your relationship was enough reason to be pushed to the edge. So now we know she has hurt a lot of people, and she doesn't even remember it. I know even when consistently say something rude, I ruminate about it for a second. So I love the girl, but her going after Malakai after her moved on was terrible and showed me that she is trying but she still is very shitty. Main reason I was happy her and Spider didn't get together, just two people who need to grow and wouldn't have done that for each other. But, I love a messy protagonist so I am behind her all day !

  • I wish it was kinda amerie's fault that Rowan's brother died like i feel like the writers made it so clear it wasn't her fault that they're just scared for her to be messy or make her actually do anything bad? so far everything's either miscommunication or a mistake and not really her fault and she's so obsessed with being better but i feel like she's fine?? it'd make for a more interesting conclusion like if she was just a kid but had a bigger part in the brothers death i think

    • It was far too random like the first season was more steady and interesting , this one was like they spun a random word generator wheel and said “oh kid with bird vendetta, let’s make it happen!”

  • Darren is one of my least favourite characters. I hate how they treated Quinni when she unmasked and I also hate how they were trying to force Ca$h to have smex. Not a fan of them
