2024 BYD Seal v Tesla Model 3 Comparison | Can the new Seal topple the reigning EV king?

BYD is making inroads into Tesla’s dominance of the Aussie EV landscape, but can the new Seal really threaten the latest Model 3? 👉 Full Review: www.carsales.com.au/editorial...
Until now, Tesla has been the dominant player in the electric car space, both locally and internationally, but Chinese giant BYD is making big inroads.
Last year, BYD overtook Tesla as the world’s largest producer of electrified cars - although Tesla held sway with pure battery-electric vehicles - and the new Seal, on paper at least, looks extremely competitive against the big-selling Model 3.
With more power, a longer range and a lower price, can the BYD Seal dethrone the EV king? And will this be enough for sales success?

    • According to the engineers we've spoken with from Chinese brands, the local Chinese market prefers the more aggressive ADAS. They're still wrapping their heads around how to tune it for overseas markets where traffic flow is different.

      @carsales@carsalesАй бұрын
    • @@serpserpserpIt’s fixed. We have a Seal Premium and while the speed chime was loud and incessant, the aggressive “emergency lane keep” was borderline dangerous as it tugs the wheel while you’re driving amongst cars in other lanes. Since the update, it’s completely fixed. The lane keep has never falsely triggered and is very docile even compared to our Mazda 3 which had a very standard lane keep system. The speed limit chime has also been fixed, it takes longer to activate, has an extra 1km/h leeway whereas before it would trigger when the car crept up in speed with the cruise control set. Now it doesn’t do that and even when you are above the speed limit, it is a very quiet chime that you can barely hear over music. All this has fixed the one major problem on what is otherwise been a well equipped luxe feeling electric sedan that isn’t exorbitant.

  • First and foremost, everything you've mentioned about the BYD ADAS system, is now irrelevant. The resent OTA update has fixed all that. Getting an EV, was at the back of my mind for a while as it seems like a perfect fit to my commuting routine. However, all the EV's available were either too expensive or too ugly or both! And then came the Seal... When you want to grab the attention (and the business) of all of those who are sitting on the fence between ICE and EV, THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT!!!! By offering them something which feels upmarket and familiar. Not but forcing them to change their whole nature by cutting costs and calling them innovations! I honestly don't know how the Model 3 is street legal in Australia when you have to constantly take your eyes of the road for as much as checking your speed! That's not innovation, that's a bloody scandal. In fact, if the Model 3 came with an MG or LDV or BYD or GWM badge, you'd be pushing them cars back into the ocean with your bare hands!!!! So, spare me the hypocrisy. This is not innovation. This is cost cutting at its finest. Stop comparing such a beautiful car to an esky on wheels. Lucky they didn't take out the steering wheel so you don't forget you're in a vehicle! And before I get all the "you bloody commie" replies, I have no relation to China whatsoever (actually, both cars are fully made there anyway). But I wont deny my own eyes because of political correctness

    • As a Model 3 owner with indicator and drive stalks, I agree, their removal for their updated model isn't innovation, it's cost cutting and I think could put buyers off because of that. But otherwise it's not that difficult of a car to get used to. And having to glance just to my left to see my speed is not as major a safety risk as you're making it out to be. Heck, unless you have a HUD, you're going to be looking down and taking your eyes off the road to glance your speed.

  • I test drove both yesterday (BYD Performance and Model 3 Long Range), and tbh I am still having trouble choosing between the two. I can definitely say the Tesla out classes the BYD in refinement and "premium" feeling, however not by much. The BYD does feel noticeably more powerful, it is much easier to drive and get used to (because of the traditional buttons and stalks), the regenerative breaking isn't as harsh as the Tesla's, it's got Android Auto/Apple Car Play, which is honestly a deal breaker for some people. Where the Tesla has the upper hand is just when you sit in both cars, you do notice Tesla just feels more premium, less hard cheap plastics being used, it's autopilot features are lightyears ahead of everyone else and I do feel when we finally get FSD capability, a lot of people will regret not buying a Tesla, but honestly the lack of stalks such and you'll need to get used to it. However, surprisingly, I don't mind swiping the screen for drive and reverse functions. Once I discovered you can get an after-market digital dash for the Tesla (hate looking at the center screen all the time), it made me a lot accepting to buying the Tesla, otherwise, I would have gone BYD for sure, now it's still a hard choice.

  • So you have to accept the M3's "quirks" (12:55), like worse performance, worse warranty conditions, no gauge cluster, no stalks, no AA or Apple Car Play, phantom collision warnings, lane assist wrestles, ... and that's why it is clearly the better car? OK TESLA Stan.

    @Tubaluc@TubalucАй бұрын
    • The 0-100 time is deceptive - the Tesla is software speed limited up to around 50km/h - after this is quicker than the Seal and quicker over a 1/4 mile. BYD warranty is definitely much worse than Tesla's - there is an extensive list of exclusions from the headline warrany - many items are covered for much less time than the main warranty. There are no "lane assist wrestles" with a model 3 and it suffers far less phantom braking events than the Seal - it's also infinitely less "intrusive" than the seal. A gauge cluster is unneccesary - stalks are a personal choice - the Tesla is clearly a better put together vehicle overall.

      @TB-up4xi@TB-up4xiАй бұрын
    • @@TB-up4xi Riiiight... so before the seats are down, a BMW 5 series estate has 570 litres, an Audi Q8 e-tron has 569 litres and a VW ID7 has 532. What you're suggesting is that the significantly smaller Tesla Model 3 has more boot space that all of these. Given the size of the car plus the size of the boot access, I think we can safely say something smells fishy here. Now here's the interesting part: Tesla used to quote 425 litres themselves, and this was then quoted by reviews (not something they just came up with). Now, however, they seem to be quoting 594... curious, given the external dimensions of the vehicle haven't changed for the Highland update, and interior space seems largely identical by all accounts. I wonder how they managed to find another 169 litres? Heaven forbid Tesla be bending the rules a little here and coming up with a way of measuring figures in a way different to most other manufacturers. They wouldn't do that, of course. Never have before, have they? (Nobody mention how they quote 0-62mph with a rolling start, disregarding the ZERO part in the name) Setting aside all sarcasm, I've owned many cars with varying sizes of boot - some smaller, some bigger. I think we can say just from looking at the two cars here that the Tesla is bigger but that it's not almost 150% the size of the BYD's. Just ignore the figures and use a little sense.

      @Henderson10102@Henderson10102Ай бұрын
    • @@Henderson10102 They may be measuring differently to other manufacturers - who knows, but my pre-highland model 3 has almost identical storage space to the Highland version and this is considerably more storage space overall than my wife's Volvo XC60 with the seats up, - we have physically uunpacked the Volvo when we planned a trip to Melbourne from Sydney and moved the kit into the model 3 because it didn't all fit in Volvo And I would wager yes, when you add all the spaces together - considering the lack of sub boot and frunk space in the BYD combined with the shallower, narrower and shorter main trunk, the Model 3 would have 50% more space overall. Who knows what the 495L was based on - maybe without the sub trunk or frunk and some older models had large sub-woofers intruding into the trunk space that the base model doesn't have

      @TB-up4xi@TB-up4xiАй бұрын
    • @@TB-up4xi From what I can tell, the 425 litres excludes the front boot. One review I've found of the updated model, they mention space underneath taking it up to 594 litres. Honestly, I question this more than a little for two reasons. First off, I don't think this "usable space" is really all that usable unless you have a lot of smaller items and rucksacks that ideally fill the volume. You won't be using it for large suitcases or tent bags when going on holiday, furniture when moving house, or other large items that need day to day use (like folded up prams) - that's what the main boot space is used for, and that boot is 425 litres. Second - that's 169 extra litres, which is a heck of a lot of space given what we can see of it and given the not inconsiderable front boot is 88 litres, so you're talking almost double the same space available under the boot floor... something Tesla never mentioned before? Even with slight tweaks and and a smaller subwoofer, that seems too high a figure. But even setting that aside: when you get down to a review like this, showing two clearly similar boots side by side where one seems slightly bigger but then using Tesla's "quoted figured" without questioning or addressing the blatant disparity is wrong. As was your comment about it being something Auto Express made up, given it was a Tesla quoted figure. The Tesla is more practical - simple point of fact. But in a comparison test like this, the figures shown should give viewers accurate context. "How much more practical" is not illustrated here, and the void between the two cars is not that great... something I have been specifically looking into as a potential buyer.

      @Henderson10102@Henderson10102Ай бұрын

I have no issues, only when travelling long distances which does not occur weekly then its fine. Even in long distances preplanning with the NAV is easy to determine the charge points.

  • BYD, is still tied to dealership model, it’s not as safe, not as fast. Not as efficient, not as connected and a significant amount heavier. Has a shorter warranty, Still uses a key fob and doesn’t have auto pilot. The model 3 has global success due to some incredible engineering and features, but people don’t understand that just because the Tesla has a minimal interior, it by no means lacks substance. But no, it doesn’t have a heads up display.

  • I test drove both the base Seal and the standard 2024 Model 3, both are good cars but I preferred the Seal by a long shot. The Tesla was bordering on minimalism taken too far. Also the glass roof on the Seal looked more impressive (one peice) and didn't get as hot as the Tesla. I'd go Seal as a first EV.

Im shopping between the two and test drove the Seal, which doesn’t have any of the intrusive assistance mentioned. All negatives can be updated via software i suppose. Something the Seal has only recently got in terms of over the air updates. Diving a Tesla is a paradigm shift generally speaking, and granted most people can be resistant to change with some features in both cars not for everybody. Either way, both cars are fantastic when compared to some others out there. Each time I get into my 4x4, I need to remind myself of things I simply now take for granted in the Tesla.
