When Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel, a young Lieutenant by the name of Zvi Greengold rushed to defend the country. Under his command he has 2 Centurion tanks. They've just been fixed and he heads out to battle at night. What happened next is an incredible feat. In the battle he repeatedly engaged the enemy's T-55s and T-62s. Having been hit several times he was injured and forced to change tanks but still took the battle to the attackers. When the battle was over, Zvi Greengold had spent almost 30 consecutive hours in a tank, during which he is known to have destroyed at least 20 Syrian machines. His superiors believe the true number to be closer to 40, and higher estimates put it closer to 60.

    • The Centurion was a WW2 design. In the Indian/Pakistan war it destroyed the Patons.

      @benwilson6145@benwilson61452 жыл бұрын
    • @@benwilson6145 A note on that. The take-away from the Indo-Pakistan war wasn't that "better tanks win," because if that were the case, the Pakistanis with their hundreds of mid-model Pattons would have won. Instead, they lost. And they lost more tanks than the Indians even had to fight them with. At the battle of Asal Uttar, India had a mix of 45 Centurion Mark Is, 45 M4 Shermans, and 45 AMX-13s. Pakistan had 220 M47 and M48 Pattons and 44 Chaffees. And the Indians did engage the Pattons with their Shermans at shorter ranges to rob the Pattons of their advantages. Pakistan also failed to do any recon, and drove many of those tanks into a muddy plain, getting stuck, allowing the Indians an easy ambush with largely inferior and outdated tanks supported by only slightly more modern ones. By the end of that fight, Pakistan lost over 100 tanks. The Indians captured about 40 of them. The rest were unserviceable. The Indians only lost 10 tanks in return, which were able to be returned to service after repair and cleaning. Superior training, tactics and recon is what brought victory for the Indians in that war. The best weapon in the world becomes worthless if you put it into the hands of someone who has no idea how to use it well, or at all.

  • The Isreali Centurion was named the Sho't if I remember correctly. One of the reasons the Centurion was able to easily destroy the T-55, is because the APDS fired by a Centurion is able to penetrate the T-55 with relative ease due to the speed of a sub calibre round. Edit: It's come to my attention that this isn't the whole picture, so before you just believe my comment *please* read the replies!

    @thathatowner1484@thathatowner14842 жыл бұрын
    • Yeah there’s the Sho’t Meteor which is just an Israeli Centurion with a Rolls-Royce Meteor engine in it and the Sho’t Kal variants (Alef/Bet/Gimel/Dalet). APDS has moderately high armour penetrating capability as the shell travels pretty fast and has a high kinetic energy. Spalling and other post-penetration effects however are minimal.

  • the tank commander that personally trained me when i joined the Armored Brigade always told me a very important fact about being a tank crewman. " *you can spend 5 years in a tank without any battles and call yourself an tanker. but be in armored combat for more then 5 minutes and stay live and you have become an Ace. survive to tell the story and you've become a Veteran. keep on fighting and your a Hero. what makes you a dangerous Tank Commander isnt how effectively you can lead your other crewmen, but how effectively you can make them do what they are trained NOT to do, which is to be unreadable. being able to do that one little movement when not expected can mean the difference between life and death. proper cooperation and coordination with the rest of the crew, mainly the Driver and gunner in modern vehicles can make your unit into a one-tank army.* " he was right as well. if you are able to cooperate and coordinate with your crew as if they were the limbs of a body, and you were it's brain, but that tank it's heart, then you can become so damn dangerous that most other units, be that foot units or armored units alike, will simply be too stressed and afraid that they can barely do what they are supposed to do. i don't mean to sound cocky or anything of the likes at all, but i feel like the man that trained me could command a unit so well that IF he was up against another battallion of tanks he would be victorious. he was a genious when it came to outsmart other units by simply getting his eyes on an area of oppertunity. what he very often like to do was take those routes that other tank crews would not as they slow them down. but most of the time they are also the least expected areas for a tank to open fire from, which means that eyes are not set there because of that. i hope i never have to use the skills and knowledge he gave me and taught me, and not because i am afraid of dying, but because i fear they might be too effective. especially if i am able to get a look on the surroundings that i would be either defending or attacking. i don't want to fight a war simply because of the unnesesary loss of life it would result in...

Mission 2, murder in the dark: fight the enemy troops alone. Bonus objective to stay undetected and to prevent them from realizing you are alone. Mission 3: reinforcements, reinforce the base under attack. Mission 4: desperate last stand, you are inside the base and must survive and hold the line. Mission 5: help is on the way, travel to the base as fast as possible to reinforce them. You arrive and find out that there is no giant battle but you and your crew survived and made it. However there are a few misconceptions I felt need addressing: 0:10 - Yom kippur is not celebrated with a menorah, that is only used in Hannukah. Additionally the older males are not wearing a kippa when praying which is pretty much a requirement for praying no matter the strictness of your belief as a Jew. 1:39 - the Israeli symbol for medics and their equipment is a david star, not a cross (which is a Christian symbol)

They didn't know "Zvika Force" was a single tank with a madman of a commander. At one point, he was asked by an Israeli officer how many tanks he had. His reply was, "My situation isn't good. I can't tell you how many." If the enemy had known they were facing a single enemy tank, they would have just closed in and overrun him.

  • This story reminds me of this: The Valley of Tears During the Yom Kippur War, a small impossibly outnumbered Israeli force held back a large portion of the Syrian army, for four days in the Golan Heights. The Syrians were armed with hundreds of tanks, but gave the Israeli forces a false sense of security revealing only a few of their tanks in battle formation for months before the massive attack they had planned. If this attack was successful they could have taken Israel. They had three infantry divisions and over a thousand tanks. At one point, it was said to be just three Israeli tanks against one hundred and fifty Syrian tanks. A sergeant, out of shells wanted to leave his position, but was ordered to stay put. With no ammo, he was up against impossible odds. It would take a miracle to save him; to save Israel, and that’s just what happened. The Syrians retreated, just when the Israeli force was on the verge of collapse! It has been theorized that the Syrians didn’t know the tanks were out of shells and seeing only a few tanks changing positions, they may have believed that Israel had more tanks than they actually did. However, a Syrian soldier swears an army of Angels surrounded those few tanks Israel had and considering the rate of miracles surrounding the small country of Israel, that could truly be what happened in what is now known as, the Valley of Tears. Psalm 121:4 Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. Amen.
