What a great video, and very informative. MY 2016 F150 is showing tire pressure out of wack, and I know w/ 180,000 miles one or more sensors need to be replaced, so if I were a prudent person, I'd replace all four. But I harken back to the days when I recall God gave me the brains to check my tire pressure every month or so before the engineers took over our sense of common sense. Engineers don't rule my mind, or make me feel stupid. I will continue to check my own air tire pressure, along with referring to my own notebook I keep in the glovebox, a record of oil and filter changes, spark plug changes, trans oil changes, and all parts replaced logged in by date and mileage as my only guide for maintenance, and exercise my brain that way for a longer and healthier life. THUMBS UP!!!

Same scenario for me. Purchased a set of take offs for my Wrangler with no TPMS sensors. Will give this a try on the spare first to see if I can get the bead to "pop" when reinflating. That's the step that concerns me the most. Thanks for doing this video. Good job!

I'm 60, and I still can't feel a rapid lose of air pressure with my low profile tire resulting in tire damage and $ spent . Not all tech is bad.

I just picked up a bead breaker from amazon. I have to do my tires today. Since we are a two car family and I have my riding mower - and probably neighbors (lol) I elected to buy the tool. My GF mentioned that recently to do all four tires at a shop she paid over 200 bucks. I read a lot of people on here say its a waste of money to buy one of these and just take it to the shop. Well, I do not trust the shops here and they tend to be very expensive. I enjoy doing my own work and prefer it as I know it gets done right :) Thank you for the great video!
I'm with ya. Used mine many times including a set of John Deere and quad tires. Have the neighbors Toyota sitting in the driveway now with a tpms light on. Haven't checked it yet but suspect I'll have to break a bead to replace dead sensor.

Thanks for the video; I can use this information for the TPMS on my wife’s Toyota Matrix’s snow tires! Might be a different “learning” process for the car, but installing the sensors should be the same.
Your welcome. Just make sure you buy preprogrammed sensors for your application and the relearn procedure can be found in your owners manual or online easily. Many Toyotas have a reset button just below and to the right of the steering wheel in the knee bolster.

When you install TPMS sensor w/rubber stem, you need to apply some mounting lubricant pasta (I used Bead Don on rubber stems), like for usual stems w/no TPMS. But do you need to apply a bit of that paste on metal stem? Or something else should be applied, or just nothing? But the metal stem also has on the bottom the Rubber gasket as well, so should be lubricated I think. Thank you for the informative film.

A vacuum on the valve stem and a good push on the sidewall works well I use autel mx sensors 109 for 4 universal sensors.
I like the video, and learned about a new tool, with the bead breaker. I'll be getting one. 2 notes: 1. Lower tire pressure will result in effectively a "smaller " diameter tire. This will result in a higher speed on the wheel speed sensor. 2. Those sensors weigh at about 1 ounce. That will throw off the balance. That is a lot of unbalance for a smaller tire, but probable will even affect a tire this large. Even if you don't feel the out of balance, it could cause un-necesary wear on the tire and the suspension components.
Hey, I commented previously about the fact that I don't need an engineer to devise a tire pressure sensor since I check my own air pressure about once a month, and I do my own oil checks per the written log in my glovebox instead of a moniter that tells me to change my oil. Now, since these tire pressure sensors are old enough and going out of wack and spending all that money on tools to break a bead, and the tire presurre sensors that need to be replaced, why don't truck and car owners just tell their tire mechanic to skip it. Skip the noise, skip the bullshit, and just put in regular valves and be done with these engineering junk pieces that seem to take over our life. And while you're at it, pull the freakin wire that keeps the stop/start technology from taking over our life too. Who needs a motor to stop at every stop sign, yield sign, redlight? If you only knew how much gas you'd be saving in a month, like less than a quarter gallon of gas, you too would think it was silly, and oh so unnecessary, and a real headache if that crap finally breaks. Mine did, and instead of paying more than $300 to fix it, I told the dealer to forget it, I'll fix it myself. I did. I pulled the wire under the dashboard...easypeasy...smarter than an engineer. If they were smarter than me, the crap would still be working. These bells and whistles jamed into our vehicles along with all the other crap is why you need an AGM type battery. Go look it up and find out how expensive those suckers are. And go find out how expensive it is to replace those heavy duty starters when that too goes belly up from going off and on all the time you stop/start.

I just want to comment on your first point, about the tire pressure sensors not being necessary. I want you to know I also check my tire pressures regularly, as well as many others for family and friends. So I would be just fine without the tire sensors. But there are at least two good arguments for having them as well. For example, my wife doesn't check her tires, or anything else for that matter. And it's great for me that instead of needing to check them regularly, I can just wait till she tells me a tire is low (Because the light came on.). The second, perhaps more important reason; and the reason the tire pressure sensors were mandated to be on all cars, is because a lot people are lazy. They don't check their tires, nor do they check anything else on their vehicles. And what happens is you get people driving at interstate speeds on worn out tires, with low air pressure, and then the tire blows out, killing people. They mandated the tire pressure sensors for the same reasons they had to put a label on step ladders saying not to stand on the top. Because a significant portion of the population are complete idiots. And when their tire blows out; it's not their fault for driving on worn out tires with no air in them; no, they want to blame and sue everyone else. The government mandated the tire pressure sensors to stop lawsuits.
@@davidtn2355 Well David, I agree wholeheartedly with you about people being lazy. I didn't know that the govt mandated tire pressure sensors be installed. I guess the government is on to people. My real beef is they don't last long enough so why have them. For me, tire pressure in the safe zone is what I always check myself, and I have my wife check with her air pressure testor. I am all for doing the work myself, but the bead breaker costs more than two sets of sensors. I love buying tools for projects, but that bead breaker is pretty expensive.
Oh yea, that bead buster is not practical for someone that just needs a set of sensors installed. It's only good for someone that's in the auto, powersport, aviation, agriculture industry. It's a must for swapping tires for someone into powersports. Works great for me to install tpms sensors while the vehicle is still on the lift. I actually brought it home this weekend to break the beads on my John Deere 140. I'm restoring it and need to remove the tires so the rims can be bead blasted.
Saw a video where a guy used a scissor jack ...placed a board on tire then jack on top of the board ..then placed under car and screwed the jack to where it pressed the bead loose

Nice video , well done. I see you have Bilstein 5100 shocks . Your truck does not look lifted , I hear conflicting info on the 5100s being compatible on stock heights. I have a 21 f250 and want to put Bilsteins on but not a fan of the yellow color of the 4600s . Any insight? Thanks
I no longer have the truck but really liked the Bilstein's. It had a softer feel but suspect mostly from the longer springs. That's what I wanted though because it rode real stiff stock.
Let's face it - TPMS is a giant fail. Old Henry Ford would have fired the engineering intern that came up with that idea. LOVE YOUR VIDEO. May need it when my wife's Ford Edge sensors go bad. I drive an old Bronco, and manually check the pressure with a swift kick, just like the '85 owners manual says.
TPMS systems were federally mandated I think back around 2006. It would be nice if all manufactures got on the same page.
Mandated by our “nanny state” mentality, government has to “protect us” but really it was people just too lazy to check their tire pressure regularly coupled with the Ford Exploder Firebone blow out/rollover lawsuits. Gov’t felt they had to do “something”. Just like backup cameras, people too lazy to turn around and look before backing up. Don’t get me wrong, I think TPMS has its place (no need to have a air gauge in the glove compartment) just wish they’d spent a bit more time ironing out a standard that all OEMs could use.
Ok, so which sensor brand did you used? On my 2017 F250 one of the oem sensors stop working shortly after I replaced my tires for 35x22.5x20. Since I’m running lower psi I changed the low psi threshold using Forscan. It worked fine for a few weeks then the sensor in question started to work intermittently until one day just quit. I purchased an EZ-sensor by Schrader and I also got the tool to program the new sensor. My problem; the tool sees the sensor transmitting proper data but the truck cannot see/detect the aftermarket sensor during the relearning steps. The sensor was successfully program twice, the first attempt was by letting the tool generate an auto-ID and when that failed I copied a sensor ID from one of the OEM sensors and copied it to the new sensor. Either way the truck cannot see the new sensor. But the programming tool can. My tires are seating at 45psi fronts and 35psi rear. Any idea what could be causing this? This is the second sensor I’ve replaced on that tire with same results. Both sensors were the EZ-sensor which according to Schreader is compatible with Ford TPMS systems.
Sounds like a compatibility problem. Your SD has the latest generation sensor that has the smaller transmitter. I think it is also 315MHz. I bought four Vosin brand chinese sensors off amazon for 40 bucks. I work for Ford and the parts department wanted more for 1 sensor then the set of four I purchased. I forgot to mention, they were already programmed. Worst case scenario, try a motorcraft sensor, your dealer will have in stock or order online. One thing about the motorcraft sensors, they are dead and do not read from an activator when in your hand. They have to be inside the tire and pressured up before the circuit board "wakes up" and then your tpms tool will read the serial #, and thus can relearn the system.

Do you need to rebalance the tires? I realize that the sensors don't weigh much and the tires and wheels are large. Would this be a necessary thing to do in smaller vehicles? Also, if I had two sets of wheels ,like summer and winter , would I have to retrain my vehicle every time I changed them?
No need to rebalance. If you have two different sets of wheels then yes you would have to relearn. If it's a Ford then no biggie, easy and fast to do.
Will a portable air pressure pump be able to do the same ? or you need something stronger ?
Haven't tried but I bet it would work since the inner bead is still seated.
Outstanding Video! I asked a dealer the same question today I don’t want to remove the wheel and tires off truck. Mine is a 2008 Chev. Original TSP’s and keep relearning them but drive 50 miles and get dash message again. So thinking TSP have lived out their life time Your tires did not have TSP’s in them. Did you add them just for the dash in the truck ? I am thinking these TSP items are not a necessity if one monitors and checks the air pressure all the time like I do.. Well done nice and cjean video. I am a perfectionist and clean is always good. I have the Michelin LTX as well and my rig only has 69K miles. Hardly drive it. Thanks again
Your Welcome! Yea, I added tire sensors to turn off the light. It sounds like the batteries may be low due to the age of your sensors. If you know someone with a pocket scanner, see what tpms codes are stored.

How you know if sensors. Compatible. Is it voltage, brand, code number ? Do any tires come with tire sensors. Included ?
Vehicle manufacturers typically require a TPMS sensor from a specific OE supplier, which can vary from model to model. Using an incorrect sensor will result in a lack of operation. TPMS sensors operate at one of two frequencies, 315MHz, and 433MHz. The frequency of the sensor used is determined by the vehicle manufacturer. The two frequencies are not interchangeable. When shopping sensors, make sure they are listed correct for the year/make/model you are working on or get them at your local dealer.

Thanks for the video. I have read multiple threads/posts on Acura forums that if you buy the original TPMS sensor, the system does auto-program/relearn while driving and multiple users confirmed this. Do you think that could be true? The reason for my question is that I called few tire shops and they refused to install a customer TPMS part, so I went to the dealer. Dealer wanted an hour labor which was $168 + tax. I asked why that high, he replied to reprogram the sensor. I walked away.
That is correct. If you have a OEM programmed sensor installed all you have to do is: 1. Ensure tires are inflated to the pressure indicated on the tire placard. 2. Drive vehicle for at least 15 minutes above 30mph in order for system to learn new sensor IDs. That said, in my experience you will not have to drive it that long. All a tire shop has to do is pop the outer bead, install new sensor and air tire back up. Do you know which sensor it is? That is where a TPMS scanner comes in handy unless the cars monitor has a message telling you. If you know which sensor is bad and you already have a programmed sensor then all you need to do is find someone to install it. If you want to do it yourself and have no tools, there are videos on KZhead of various ways to pop the outer bead so it can be installed. Good luck!
@@raincitywrench117 Thank You. It is the rear right sensor. The car usually shows PSI on all 4 tires but on one of them was just a dash instead. This started happening this winter when temps dropped. Manual says when battery is low at 5%, the system will throw an error. I do see at times that right front at times may not show PSI but soon after tire warms up, it starts working. I guess both on TPMS on the right side of the car may need replacing at some point but the rear one is for sure.

@@raincitywrench117 The car turned 10 years couple of months ago, so it is possible that most if not all sensor batteries may need replacing. It is just 2 right side sensors are showing some low battery symptoms. We had couple of warm days, then even the sensor with the worst battery comes back to life after some driving. I picked up one Acura sensor kit for $39 online, but it didn't include valve nut and washer, it did contain the rest of the valve parts. I just want to find a shop that will replace it for me as "normal tire shops" won't install customer parts such as TPMS. I called: Discount Tire, Les Schwab, Fire stone, Goodyear and another one. None of these places would want to install "customer bought" TPMS - liability? I am left with couple of places such as Pep Boys and another independent shop.
On my GM you go into the Information System and tell it you want to reprogram TP S . Then go in order directed and let a couple of pounds air out. Horn beeps at each position as it is read. Read owners manual.

You said you take the core out so you can fill tire faster. I never saw when you reinstalled the valve core . When do you do that?
I fill the tires close to specification then install the cores. Do final check and fill as some pressure will be lost when installing the cores. 🙂
When you installed the new sensors did you have to torque them?
Nope, just snugged them up tight.

I just picked up a set of Michelin E load And wheels off a 2024 chevrolet 2500hd for $600 they where the AT2. I prefer the defenders but couldnt pass them up
Are you leaving your e-brake off so you can spin those tires as you work on them? I presume you chocked your tires for safety?
Yea, exactly. Plus I jacked up one corner at a time in this video.
@@raincitywrench117 I would make a point of mentioning that the tires were chocked while the brake was off as the consequences of not securing tire rotation while jacking a car could be disastrous.

Did the wheels need to be balanced after?
Nope. I didn't touch the wheel weights. It drove nice and smooth with no vibrations.
Windex is an alcohol-based cleaner, not a lubricant but you use it as a lubricant?
I should have used dawn dish soap but had some windex on hand and rolled with it. It worked good to my surprise. I guess it has squeaky clean beads now 😆
There's a screw/nut on the TPMS - you don't have to tighten it?
These valve stems just pull through the wheel and snap into place and the sensor comes already attached to the end of the valve stem with a small screw. Some valve stems are threaded and have a nut holding them into the wheel.
@@raincitywrench117 If you have to un-mount the valve stems and sensors that you just put installed in this video, how do they come out? break the bead again and push them back into the tire or undo the the little screw on the sensor and then pull out the stem through the hole? I have to move some from old tires to new tires and mine are not metal and threaded , they are rubber pop in like these.
@@airstripes I think the rubber valve stems are a one time use. You got it, break bead, unscrew the sensors, rip out the stems. Screw sensors onto new stems and then insert into wheel. Any tire shop should have new stems or order from amazon. Valve stem installer will come in handy for that job.

Only use Nickel plated valve cores with TPMS systems. Brass cores can cause corrosion inside the valves. Also, if you are using metal valves on your TPMS system, never use a metal cap to cover the core, only use plastic caps.
Yea, every time I remove metal caps they are corroded.
@@raincitywrench117 They say that you should never use a core made out of brass if you have a TPMS system. They say use Nickel plated cores instead of brass cores because the brass can cause corrosion, too.

Not really but if you like tools and are a do it yourselfer then why not 😎 I work at a dealership so I brought the tools home and did this in my garage.
After being ripped off for replacement sensors by a tire chain store (LES SCHWAB), I will be ditching them entirely during the next tire replacement.

How do you know what sensor you need or the number of the sensor?
When each sensor is activated in relearn mode it will register the sensor ID into the computer like I did at the end of this video. You will need four sensors and each one will have a different sensor identification number

Most Windex has ammonia in it and that removes wax from the wheels!
Oops! Just grabbed it out of the cabinet & rolled with it.
Everything good EXCEPT Windex as tire lube.
Forgot to mention The GM dealer wanted $600 to sell me 4 GM sensors and labor of 4 tires/wheels. Geez. Maybe I should apply a piece of black elec tape over Amber low tire icon in dash. lol

Why are you using an impact tool on the bead buster tool? Impact is not needed or wanted with this tool.
Yea I know but it speeds things along. When it wears out I'll buy another. Just used it yesterday in fact, handy little tool.
Most likely the new tires and rims didn't have TPMS sensors as the guy kept them to put in his new tires and rims. That's what I did 10 years ago when I bought a Tundra and changed out tires and rims right after buying the truck new. Sold the factory tires and rims with plain rubber valve stems the tire shop put in them when they took the TPMS sensor out to put in my new rims and tires.
That's exactly what happened Tom. I later found out that the local tire shops will rob the sensors on a wheel swap & then air up the take offs.
You just added weight to one side of the tire so now all 4 tires will have to be rebalanced which will require a trip to the tire shop which defeats the purpose of what you are doing anyways
I wondered if it would make a difference but it didn't. Had it out on a 400 mile trip after and drove smooth as glass. Those takeoffs had the weights still on. Looks like Les Schwab just broke the bead and robbed the sensors to install in the customers new tires.
Why didnt you show the valve stem going back in for both tires? You skipped this part?

Yep, 65 psi on all four unless I tow. I programmed the rears down with the IDS so my light would stop coming on.
@@raincitywrench117 what kind of tool do you need to be able to change what psi is set point. i have a gmc 2500 and my light is alway on i usually run lower pressures when not towing.

So ! You really do not have to take it to a dealer such as Jeep for reactivating the sensors !
I haven't done a Jeep yet but I know Ford, Toyota, Honda and others have preprogrammed sensors. Once they are installed, you will need to follow the relearn procedure. I believe your vehicle will automatically learn new tire pressure sensors after driving for 10 minutes or more above 15 mph.

Water's a great lube for rubber and Windex has lots of water in it.

Without those sensors the tire pressure light stays on which can be annoying.
My thought is I don't want tire pressure sensors. My '07 Focus has had malfunctions for the last 7 yrs. Already has cost me too much $$. Being 79 yrs old now, I have got along fine without tire pressure sensors for decades!

I didn't rotate the tires on the rims or touch the wheel weights. No vibration rolling down the interstate, maybe I got lucky 🤞

This TPMS is the most garbage money grab nuisance so people go to a dealership to get rid of an 'idiot light' on the dash. You could have bought a 300$ OBD2 scanner instead of that silly TMPS scan tool.
Too many tools, too much time, too much work, gotta purchase sensors. Might as well have the mechanic do the job.
