    • I agree. I saw one for the first time when I was 14, was instantly smitten, and one or more Shelties have been in my life for most of the past four decades. I currently have two - a sable and a blue - who both came from an excellent heritage breeder. I have also done dog sports, including agility, trick dog, flyball, canine freestyle, lure coursing, drafting...these little dogs are up for everything!

  • I just had to put my sheltie down today. After 16 years, Butter was the hardest to let go. This one hurts. other than my Wife, he was my best friend. I've worked from home since 2014 and He stuck to me like glue. This is going to take a while to let him go. I miss him already.

    • I hurt for you. You will miss him every time you turn around, but another dog (I recommend an adult Sheltie) is the best healing agent. Been there, done that. Ten months in between was too long.

    • We had one night without a sheltie, it was the worst night. The next day our vet called with a 6 month old needing to be rescued. We did. He could never replace our last one but this one is very healing to fill the void.

  • it's very easy to love a Sheltie. I had a black and white that was perfect in every way until she passed at age 11 from Bone Cancer. She is always in my thoughts and heart. RIP my sweet Wendy girl.

  • Shelties are wonderful as long as they are bred from responsible breeders like you. I have some really sick ones coming out of BYB and puppy mills. I will people would learn to recognize the difference between a responsible breeder and a bad breeder.

    • It's not just about a reputable breeder although that is certainly top on the list but their contracts, too, making sure you read them and agree with them before getting one of their puppies. Some breeder contracts make it where they have some control over the dogs for their entire lives. I don't agree with that anymore than I agree with buying from a bad breeder.

    • True. My sheltie came from a breeder on a farm. I was 7 at the time, so when my parents were looking for a dog, this breeder said she had a puppy who wasn't a pure bred and we could have her for a cheap price. My girl has dealt with a chronic skin condition and hypothyroidism her whole life. She's 15 now and we still don't have her skin managed but skin issues like dermatomyositis and hypothyroidism are common in the breed, so I suppose this should have been expected.

  • I rescued a tri-colored Sheltie and had her for about 13 years before her passing. Miss her everyday. Therefore, I am partial to tri-coloreds. But all shelties are beautiful.

  • It was like you were reading my bio. I grew up watching lassie. In fact I still do. I recorded a bunch of episodes so my one sheltie who also loves Lassie can watch it. She comes running when she here's Timmy in the Intro call...L-A-S-S-I-E. Then she actually sits In front of the TV watching it. I got shelties because they remind me of Lassie but are smaller. I've been to many agility and obedience shows too. Such a wonderful breed.

  • I love Collies, Shelties, (a few other breeds), and I know Collies and Shelties are not the same breed but they do have the same looks and temperament. Just great dogs but the smaller ones are easier for me to care for now so my last two dogs have been Shelties. My 14 1/2 year old Sheltie passed away 3 months ago. I've had her since she was 11 weeks old so it's been really sad now without her!! I am getting another one, NOT to replace her, but focusing on another one to love and care for is the only thing that will help me with my grief. Each of my fur babies have their own special forever place in my heart and I have lots of room in my heart to love and care for another Sheltie 💖 Some breeders (not talking about this one) focus only on their outer beauty when these dogs are beautiful inside and out. I don't like it when some breeders seem to care about the dogs only for a show, pun intended. I've seen people put show dogs through some things I would never put any of my dogs through. I have my standards, too, having had dogs for 45 years. I would not buy from a breeder that makes me sign they get the dog back if something happens to me. When I pay for a dog and give it the proper love and care they need if something happens to me it is my choice who I want my fur baby to go to. I would agree that they should go back to a breeder rather than to a rescue but when someone has friends and family they know would give the same love and care as they have then it should be their choice who gets their fur baby if they are no longer able to care for it. There are other demands in some breeder contracts that I would also not sign and have the research from well known vets that would agree with me. When people pay money for dogs with the contracts that some breeders have with them it's like the breeder maintains ownership of the dog for its entire life. It's one thing to want a puppy/dog to go to a good loving and caring home but entirely another when the breeder wants to maintain control over the dog for its entire life. Make sure you read contracts and agree with them before you sign them! I purchased my last Sheltie from a well known and respected breeder and there was no contract! She checked out the families wanting her pups to make sure they would go to good homes before she approved them. That is how it should be and then as long as there is no abuse/neglect then when someone purchases a puppy/dog or any pet it should be theirs to make the choices for that they think are in the best interest of THEIR dog.

    • You misunderstand rescues! Nearly every state has a rescue shelter for nearly every breed. Purebreds rarely are sent to shelters, but rescue shelters like the one I use, and in other states, do a home visit, spay or neuter the dog, have a vet check-up and shots brought current, screen the recipient, have a first meeting at the shelter site,and, above all, follow up! There is a small fee, but compared to the years of companionship, a mere pittance. Rescue managers give of their time and more. What’s more, they do a careful and admirable job. They often have young dogs for rehoming, but they also have adults and seniors. My last one came from a woman who had to move into a nursing home. Jazzie was absolutely gorgeous, had a gentle presence, was adorable, adoring, and strove to make me laugh every day. Actually, most days I roared, and she loved to hear it. You ask why people prefer rescues? Well, doh!

      @sandragruhle6288@sandragruhle62882 жыл бұрын
    • @@sandragruhle6288 I think you misunderstood my comments and missed my points entirely! I wasn't knocking rescues just because I would agree with a dog going back to a breeder only if the owner didn't have a good home to send the dog to. Instead of the breeders that demand dogs always go back to them in the event something happens to the owner even when the owner has someone else that would give the dog a lovely caring home.

  • they are extremely smart and easy to train, I have a small yard, and I was able to train mine to stay in the yard without a fence very early on. she stays behind the house and out of the neighbors yard and I never have to worry about her. my jack Russell terrier who was older than her and is gone now was not the same case at all, until he got much older and couldn't get around very well, I had to watch him like a hawk. once i got the shelty however he did tend to stay with her and it was a little easier to manage him but if I wanted to let him be out for very long I put him on a cable, and I've never had to tether her outside ever.

    • sheltie.org/ That's right in your area. Consider doing fostering if you've never had a Sheltie before, see if you really want to have one. I did fostering for Samoyeds, Huskies, Border Collies and Australian Shepherds. I found out that Border Collies are too smart for me, Australian Shepherds are too active for me, Huskies are too aloof and only want to play, and I found Samoyeds to be cuddly lovable animals, but with a big downside, they shed more than any animal on earth I think. Still, I was the perfect owner for them. Consider doing fostering, see if you really want one. Every rescue group needs help, if you offer to foster, you will be training a probably neglected animal, and you will have a backup of dozens of people as well, and you can always adopt the dog out to a new family. I had 20 animals - and I kept the best 2 that needed me the most. I will never regret my time with them. I had the perfect dogs, and I'm certain I was the best possible owner they could have had. Consider fostering.
