In this video, we are counting down the top 10 facts about the Shetland Sheepdog that you might not know.
A Quick Overview:
Group: Herding Dogs
Weight: Starts at 20 pounds
Height: 13 to 16 inches tall at the shoulder
Life Expectancy: 12 - 15 years
Shelties are loving companions for all members of the family, including the kids, but they can be reserved or even shy around strangers. Because of their protective nature, they're quick to bark if they sense that anything's amiss in their territory. Training is essential to keep this trait from becoming a nuisance. On the upside, they make excellent watchdogs. You just have to teach them some discrimination.
Because of their intelligence, willingness to please, and athletic ability, Shelties excel at performance events. In their size group, Shelties typically dominate the field in agility. They're also exceptionally good in competitive obedience, flyball, tracking, and herding. In fact, Shelties have a reputation for being a little too smart for their own good. This is a breed that needs a job. Without plenty of mental stimulation, Shelties quickly become bored and will invent their own entertainment, which may or may not be to their people's liking.
Shelties retain a strong herding instinct. You'll find that your Sheltie will enthusiastically chase and try to "herd" squirrels, rabbits, and children, running around them, barking and nipping. Shelty owners should discourage this habit, especially with children, because it can lead to biting. Never let your Sheltie herd unless it's in a herding class with appropriate subjects such as ducks or sheep.

  • We have owned 6 beautiful Shelties and they are such an amazing breed, intelligent, loyal, intuitive, protective, beautiful and your best friend……the list goes on. Once you have had a Sheltie you will realise they are somehow more than a “dog” if that makes sense. People stop and comment on the beauty of our dogs on a regular basis. I am so grateful for the Shelties that have shared my life ❤️

  • I was not a dog person prior to getting my sheltie. I wanted a cat, but I'm terribly allergic. So I compromised by getting a sheltie. Lemme tell you: he is such a blessing to me. He kind of reminds me of a cat honestly.... but he is so sweet, sensitive, smart, gentle, and surprisingly superrrrrr quiet (I got lucky). I can imagine sticking with this breed forever.

    • That's exactly how everyone described my late Sheltie: 'cat dog'. And that's why I loved him. Showed me affection his way, following my everywhere, but always independent, a bit aloof and suspicious of everything. Didn't enjoy cuddling. So intelligent and sensitive

  • My sheltie was almost human...so smart! My daughter was in her crib upstairs. I went downstairs to get water. The vaporizer was on. Suddenly she started barking and running up and down the stairs. Yea like lassie lol. I followed her to the bedroom...sparks were coming from the wall where the vaporizer was plugged in. Iimagine...she actually saved my daughters life!! I loved her so much and think of her still after many years. I hope she's in heaven. If the lion will lay down with the lamb surely she's with God. I hope she is happy and knows I still love her

    • Luckily the Hebrew Bible is false because Abrahamists believe animals don’t have souls. If YOU believe animals have souls, that’s because deep down inside we are all pagans. Paganism is the natural religion of all humans. It’s animism and we once knew that all animals and plants have spirits like we do. We still believe these things even though Abrahamism tried to stamp it out of us.

  • I was helping a customer by lifting bags of stones into her car and one of these was in the back seat. She said she was rescued because she was being used for puppies, she had two litters before she was three years old. She was badly treated and the lady told me she was badly matted and very timid but the little lady dog was very nice, she let me pet her and give her ear scratches. I've met lots of interesting dogs at my work as I usually work in the pet section but I never got to pet a Shetland Collie until today, it felt like an accomplishment. The customer said I am very lucky because her dog usually is timid, especially around men.

Absolutely everything you said is very true and furthermore, they are a very sensitive dog and require a soft voice and a gentle touch! One more thing, they are so smart we started spelling words around them so they wouldn't get too excited before a walk or playing ball well, it didn't take long before they caught on to exactly what we were spelling! He is so lovable and is developing his own personality including becoming our shadows What amazes me is that he knows what time is his feeding and he'll stand by the pantry door and bark.....How does he know?

    • Because he’s hungry and you’re probably underfeeding him. I have always left dry food out 24/7 for all my dogs and cats and they NEVER overeat or get fat. They get their wet food (which is raw chicken in this house) once per day but if they are hungry before or after, they have free access to food. And of course puppies need feeding every few hours. Yours is probably hungry.

  • When we got to health risks, I was pretty sure something was going to be mentioned about their skin. My sheltie has had skin issues her whole life, it could be atopic (seasonal allergy) or some specific common breed conditions like hypothyroidism (which she has) or dermatomyositis (DMS, and we're not sure if she has this or not) which can both cause fur loss, dry flakey skin and DMS is characterized by lesions in areas lacking muscle like the face, legs and tail (my dog's tail is bare except for some fur growing on the end). There's no cure for DMS or hypothyroidism, and we still don't have her symptoms under control with the effort we've been putting in, so keep in mind, you may have a chronically ill sheltie who NEVER stops licking their paws and is balding so you may need to buy doggie sweaters to keep their bare skin warm in winter.

  • RIP to my Mollie girl. A beautiful black fur pure bred with brown and white highlights. I miss that little snout so much. A leash was never needed, she was so well behaved and never wandered out of eyesight of each other and would wait for me to catch up on hikes. She executed every command with grace and ease. I have a Husky now who is just as loving and caring, and just as clever and personable, however, she is much more independent than the Sheltie. Her stubbornness sometimes is part and parcel for the breed, but god damn can she throw a bitch fit sometimes. All for not bc all it takes is some slow deep ear scritches and shes putty in my hands. I always think about how the two of them would have interacted. The energy between them would have been insane. Two of the most beautiful dog breeds imo.

I have had first hand experience of indifference, due to not fully appreciating that any companion animal, even a canary, can feel like a family member, and is, rightly, treated as such ... Also, Sparky seems an apt name for a Sheltie; like the Duracell Bunny, Sparky by name, Sparky by nature ... until nap time ... And the fact Sparky was alert enough to save your life ... of course you would grieve ... All I can say, the pain doesn't quite go away; it just stops hurting quite so much ...

  • Collie eye anomaly, Hip displasya, Von willebrand disease do not just spontaneous develop. This is in the DNA of the dog. A reputable preservation breeder would test for this and many more before breeding a dog. They would not breed animals with this or MDR and MDR1 Other that this information this is a great video to introduce people to the breed

    @shannonrea9294@shannonrea92942 жыл бұрын
    • Von Willebrand disease I can say for certain is genetically inheritable, as it belongs in the same group of blood clotting disorders (or, rather, the inability to clot sufficiently enough) as haemophilia, except compared with the later - at least in humans - both males and females can not just carry it, but develop it, also ... I would imagine, given the double coat, it's near impossible to detect easy brusing of the skin, but a minor cut that bleeds more, and a lot longer, than it should, is a (more or less ...) direct indicator of insufficient clotting ... But I may be wrong ... last time I went anywhere near haematology was back in the late 1990s, so don't take my word for it ... [Edit: it should be noted that Hip Displasya is likely to come from the early cross-breeding with Rough Collies. It is a sad fact that many medium - large dogs, develop HD, such as German Shepherds, and specifically the - imho - insane breed 'standard' of the back legs being over extended to the rear ... HD may be alleviated through the use of hydrotherapy*, although the exact efficacy isn't known, and, for dogs, can get rather expensive (unless you happen to live close enough to a beach with body temperature waters, for most of the year ...), but, if you do have a dog with it, ask your vet, and, if you have decent pet insurance, that may cover it ... But, that being said, I'm hardly surprised that both the American Kennel Club, as well as our, British, counterpart, seems highly reluctant to deal with genetic issues with dogs. One only has to look at the disaster which are the brachycephalic breeds (viz. Pugs ...), to see how glacially slow they are at tackling a severe issue, that effects even cats. The only solution is surgery, and even then, as with Pugs, brachycephalic dogs have so many other issues. A Pug I met once was a friendly little soul, whom came from a shelter, but oh boy; aside from the panting, he couldn't lay down, on any surface, save the orthopaedic bed, the owner told me, as his hip pain was just too much, so he just went from sitting to standing, and back again ... you can tell by his excess panting - even for a Pug - the poor little guy was simply exhausted ... The tragedy is, pure bred dogs (and some cats ...) where not so badly affected, going back even 100 years ago, and certainly 200. It was when people, whom ought to have known much better, had they had the same understanding we have now, tried to decide what made for a 'perfect' example of a particular breed, did intergenerational interbreeding began ... and now, unfortunately, owners are reaping that ... BTW, a Sheltie is, if my living arrangement was twice it's current size, one of my dog breeds I would love to have, but my first go to would be a rescue shelter, to find a similar looking dog, as though s/he may be a 'mutt', the more genetically diverse a dog is, the less chance - abet not 100%, guaranteed - that they have the same genetic afflictions that comes with pure bred dogs ... ... hence the push, especially by the British Veterniary Association, of 'adopt, don't shop', because of the insane level of genetic issues that comes with pure bred cats, dogs, and many other companion animals ... (*= with personal experience of hip, and knee, pain, from an chronic, acute, condition (fibromyalgia ...), hydrotherapy isn't cheap, but the session I did have, helped with the pain, although the cost, aside from the monetary one, was absolutely fatigue the next day ... fortunately, due to that pain, and much besides, I'm disabled, albet at the too young an age of 47 ... to be told I may never work again was almost as bad as the pain ...)]

  • Don't let barking be exaggerated. Shelties do not bark that much unless they are being mistreated. Furthermore Shelties have baby voices. Grooming is not a big issue. But is is a pleasant task because it is time you can spend with the Sheltie

  • I'm wondering if #1 is true. From what I've read they're not crossed or descendants of the collie. I believe on the AKC website it states this. 🤔

    • Judy Hunter....My Sheltie Wendy was hypersensitive to shots. She would become listless for two days before recovering. She could only tolerate one or two shots at a time. I hope a severe allergic reaction didn't cause your Sheltie's death Yes it is more expensive to spread out the shots out over many Vet visits but safer for your Sheltie

  • Shelties ancestry is the toonie that was a little farm dog and a icelandic yakki dog. They are very werry of strangers and other dogs if not raise with them. My Sheltie I lost in Jan. 2022 at the age of 13. I miss him so much. they love their family, but they also are very loyal, but they can go more towards one owner. I had an old-time scotch collie but I preferer my Sheltie. I feel the AKC ruin a lot of good Breeds. That is not true what they say about the size of a sheltie. mine was 18" tall and weighted 35 pounds. I had A DNA test to see if he was a purebred and he was. it is the AKC and other like them saying that they should only be 14"to 16" tall to be a purebred. Shelties have Boeder Collie in them and others. So yes you can get a sheltie bigger than a show dog. These AKC do not know what the hell they are talking about and how many breeds have they ruin by changing who the breed really was in the first place to suit the rich people in America. Admit it the AKC and others like them only care about what they want not about what the breed really was and now we have the dogs like the pug with so many health problems. The pug had a longer muzzle and a little bit taller until the AKC got a hold of it. They do not breed for health of the breed but for looks only. I just do not understand why people cannot leave the breed along and just except they why they were. look at the Chihuahua the true breed is so much bigger than the ones people have today. just like the mini-Aussie, all the mini-Aussie was started from a rut of the litter. there never was a mini-Aussie. My Sheltie may have been taller than most, but he was just as good or even better than any show dog and did not have so much stress.
