  • When I was 13 I volunteered at a wildlife rescue and museum for a summer. It was a particularly hot summer with temperatures around 105 F. They had a refrigerated tin shed where dead animals were stored that were used to feed reptiles, birds of prey, and other carnivores. Well, the refrigeration unit broke down. After a few days you can't even imagine the smell in that tin shed. It was 105 outside but inside it was 150. Nobody wanted to clean that shed out so I volunteered. I did it alone and it took me two days to clean out the dead animals and bloody sawdust and scrub the interior clean. After ward the director of the museum rewarded me with any job I wanted. The job I chose was taking care of the 2 red foxes at the museum. It was totally worth it.

  • My dad was in his car, travelling around his nearby area when he saw a woman who was trying to stop his car. He stopped and the woman told him that her dog had birthed a few puppies. She asked him if he wanted one because she couldn't care for them and he said yes. He took it home and treated it like all the dogs he had before. One day, the dog started its moulting session and my dad was surprised when he saw that the coat was tinted orange. The 'dog' had pointy ears, a bushy tail and 'that face'. That's when he realised he had adopted a half fox. He said it was the best time of his life. Until one day... My dad had a friend called [Steve] and he was always doing the wrong thing. My dad had left the fox in the back garden while he was going to the shop and told [Steve] to not open the gate. Guess what. He opened the gate. The fox sprinted into the road and.... Yelp. He had got hit by a car. My dad knew that something was wrong because of that noise. He ran over and found the fox huddled in the corner of his garden, with the gate open. The fox was not okay. He was shivering and in pain, because his back leg was hanging on by a thread. Luckily, a woman who came over to help knew someone who could help. The fox was taken to her and she tried to fix the leg (it was crushed and severed). By a miracle, the vet reconstructed the leg and the fox could limp on it. Happy as ever, the fox could bound around still, and didn't seem to be bothered with the metal in his leg. This is definitely a happily ever after story, because the fox lived another 6-8 years and died at age 22, and [Steve] was thrown in the dirt.

I actually really want a pet fox as I have had both cats and dogs. Foxes are amazing creatures and thay lady had stuff lying around that the fox could easily tear up. They could get seriously hurt.

They dig through everything they can't chew apart, they pee on everything you love (even if you litter train them) when you say no to them, they make a LOT of noise and bother neighbours. Maybe another 50-100 years of domestication and specific breeding? Maybe they'll be actual pets. But now? You're just asking to destroy your house and yard.

  • I adopted a wolf from an animal shelter 26 years ago. I went there looking for a dog and came upon him. He was about six months old. I told the deputy you have a wolf there and she said no, he's a husky German Shepherd mix. Well she took me aside privately and admitted he was a full wolf and he was slated for euthanasia the next day.. I adopted him the next day one hour before they were going to kill him. He was a surrender. Wolves are not much different than foxes as they are very intelligent. I don't advise anyone getting either,or any wild animal. He took a lot of dedication and I ended up divorcing my husband. Now I have seven dogs, six of whom are Aussies. There are no vacations. The house is never really clean, fur is a part of life, they take up 50% of the time everyday and feeding, supplements, heartworm medicine, grooming, toys, etc are a huge expense. Chance, my wolf, was a wonderful companion and I never thought of him as a dog or a pet. My Aussies are worth everything they get. If you're not willing to dedicate your time and appropriate amount of money to an animal or really cannot afford to then don't get one.

    • Henry Humble Not really. What you say has not been really 100% proven, the once famous Russian foxes seem to lose most of their fame recently and around 99% of foxes we see for sale have ancestors coming from nothing else than... fur farms. And fur farms don't breed for good genetics when it comes to behavior towards humans really. I shall even boldly say, some fur farm foxes are FAR worse than the actual WILD foxes we meet in the woods and everywhere else. I had an opportunity of caring for many foxes from fur farms, and beejesus, were some acting like they were the descendants of DEVILS from Hell... XD

  • Angie, and her experience, is absolutely fascinating. Zelda is a lucky fox that she ended up in her care. Too many people want to take beautiful creatures, that should be free, and cage them up to be "pets". Thanks to Angie, maybe more people will do their due diligence and put time into researching these creatures. Enjoy watching them in the wild, or in proper outdoor facilities. But don't take their freedom and joy and coop them up in homes that are not made for them. All that happens is that they are shuffled off once the human finds they have grown out of their adorable infant stages and are quite a bit of work. Thank you again to Angie for her reality check! This was a great episode!

    • LOL...I have a cat...so true. But cats are really at their best and a great blessing when they are older. I have a nine year old mutt cat name Sumo. We all love him and he is so smart. I have had dogs and cats and love them both. But now that I am older, 57, one at a time is all I can handle. Its like taking care of a small child. LOL. blessings!!!!!!

  • So glad you tackled this topic. I live next to a Woods and see many foxes. My collie with huge pointed ears made friends with a wild fox male who would follow her round the Wood. One day the Fox followed us home, next thing it had been killed by a car. So very upsetting. Thanks Anneka for getting the reality out there :)

  • I hear this exact same thing with EVERY pet owner. "Oh! Its soooooo hard! You've got to give up everything!" I've dealt with a ton of different animals and for the most part, they are chill as hell. A few toys, good food, and a nice environment is all you need to satisfy them. Your undivided attention at times, but they will be fine.

  • Zelda must have been the cutest baby critter in the world! She is so pretty now. In order to have a real pet Fox you will need to wait for generations of selection for the most pet like animals.

  • People should see animals for what they are, in their environment, and at last embrace that we are supposed to share nature with them and not despite them. We must start portraying them as the wild animals they truly are so everyone starts/continues seeing them that way. This video should start with "If you found a tiny baby fox, find a sanctuary for foxes that can take care of them and give them what they need, but if there aren't any around you/available and you have what they need (i.e an enclosure, outdoor space, money, etc) then watch this video for good advice". I think this would be fair for them. Anyway, I love seeing this sweetie pie being under the care of a lovely woman.

  • A pet fox is not a pet, they are a wild animal that could no longer survive in the wild. And thank you for giving a realistic view of what it is like living with a fox :)

  • Foxes are still very much in the intermediate stage of domestication. They are not pets nor do they share the mentality of fully domesticated pets. It will be some time before we witness the first fully domesticated fox fit to be a pet.

    • Selfish part of me really wants to see that happen in the next 20-30 years, but only if its a net benefit to the lives of those foxes. Then again, who are we to meddle? I love playing with my dog in the way dogs play, biting wresting etc, and I wonder if I could handle a fox with the time and money
