Do you ever just hang out in the garage and stare at your vehicle and contemplate what upgrades you want to do or don’t want to do, what you love about the vehicle and what you don’t? Well, I admittedly have sat in my garage with a cup of coffee thinking those same things more times than I can count. So today, I thought I’d share what’s going in on my head about the Jeep Wrangler, bring you up to speed on everything that I’ve done, talk about some of the things I’m actually planning on not doing and some things I’ve got in store.

  • Great video, I love this type of conversation and it's really cool to hear some insight on how others go through the decision making process. One thing to note- if you plan to charge only batteries (go pro, laptop, camera), you really shouldn't need an inverter since it's originating and terminating in DC, you'd just be losing power converting back and forth.

  • Love hearing the thought process of a thoughtful person. Just had my 3.6 L Rubicon delivered - I'll try the contemplative process in deciding what kinda build to go for. And can't wait to see what rear bumper you go with Brad, looks like you have those parking sensors to negotiate. Awesome video!

  • Just add an inverter to your starter battery, then plug in the portable battery bank into that. If portable bank has an app, can set and charge at a faster rate that through the 12v socket and won’t have to worry about mounting a solar panel. A Renogy 1000W pure sign wave inveter comes with a remote switch so you take toggle the charging of the battery bank on/off so it’s only charging when you are driving and need to charge the battery bank.

  • Great insight as to your thought process about changes/upgrades. Like you, I've stared at my Xterra and "imagineered" several possible changes. Right now I am working on redoing my fridge setup and you've just given me an idea that I hadn't even thought of which is keep the fridge at the height it is and put the storage drawer above it. DUH!! Although I have an auxiliary battery setup for the fridge, I'm looking at replacing the setup with a Redarc charger and a LiFEPO4 battery. That is in the future someplace (gas money comes first. LOL) Finally, one of the biggest mods I've done is take out the back seats and build a platform with storage underneath. That is perfect for my needs.

    @brunnie@brunnie Жыл бұрын
    • I wasn't sure I was going to like the drawer above the fridge, but it actually is a great place for it. I keep most of my daily use odds and end up there. Sounds like you've got a great Xterra build, wish more folks would give those Nissans a chance, I think they are a great platform.

  • Great video as usual! Personally, I would go with a custom permanent install battery system; I feel like it's difficult to really integrate the portable batteries that you're moving in and out all the time in such a way that they're not just in the way; with the permanent install, you can seal the battery into a nice little box in the rear somewhere and run lines from the inverter to wherever on the outside of the vehicle you'll need them for camping, etc; just my $0.02 though!

  • I’m heading to Alaska with a portable battery system so I’ll know more by the end of August. I really enjoy your videos even though my philosophy is slightly more stock, minimalist, reliability and less clearance and power capability. Im going to do the chalk test to check tread on the pavement and perhaps drop the PSI a bit more. At 41 PSI I was getting 19.8 on the highway MPG….I doubt I’ll get that food with lower PSI. I just wanted to clear that up from my previous comment.

My 392 mods are so similar to yours - great to see someone else thinking along the same lines 😊 (mostly debadged, full Goose gear plates, dometic fridge, trailgater, 2x flex era 4 s in the font, 67 designs rail, Midland gmrs, garmin in reach, compressor under passenger seat, large integrated power system (goal zero 1500) etc) One big difference though, I’ve got an Ursa Minor on my 392 (installed Jan 2022), and I absolutely love it, and think you will too! I’m stoked I got the paint matched top, and I’m guessing that’s your style from all the paint matching you’ve done. I recommend all the interior power options. Another difference is suspension, I’ve got a WFO long arm mixed with the metalcloak 392 3.5” game changer along with Fox 3.0s. The ride went from great to absolutely incredible on & off road…I do get the long arms stuck on rocks though.

    • @@TrailRecon I hear ya, I waited 11 months to get my camper. It was mainly COVID related issues slowing down John & his team. I see it as a "lifetime purchase" for myself, so it was worth the wait for me. The JL30 weighs 270 lb, and the factory hard top is 140 lb, so 130 lb additional weight up top. I went with low backspace wheels (3.5" like your KMCs on the JK) to increase track width and thus get a little more tip stability at the cost of more scrubbing when turning. It looks cooler too :-) Another mod I did you might appreciate is covering all surfaces at risk of pinstriping with Xpel Ultimate 10 PPF. I've driven through crazy hard dead scrub brushes in Hollister and through unavoidable trees in the Sierras and there are no visible scratches. Sooo nice!

  • Now that I have a Wrangler it brings me back to camping trips with my parents way back in the last century. We didn't have a winch or a rooftop tent, heck we didn't even have 4wd. We were by ourselves too, probably lucky to be alive. But one thing it made us do was better planning, with paper maps...lol. By not having what is now modern equipment we had to be more cognizant of the road and the possibility of getting help out on the mountain without a cell phone or inreach. I see people driving around town with a beautifully built up wrangler or Forerunner and wonder how much of that equipment do they really need. Don't get me wrong I fully support equipping yourself for the mission, but at some point it gets ridiculous.

  • Also, if you are a taller driver, a must consider is Desert-Does-It seat Jacker (raise front) and seat Slammer (lower rear) for a much more comfortable seat angle and increased headroom. Given that you put air under your seats, you may just be able to take advantage of seat Jacker? If compressor is on passenger side, you may be able to use seat Slammer on driver seat? Will make a huge improvement in seat comfort, especially for longer trips.

  • Rooftop tents seem cool and a couple years ago I almost succumbed to the impulse. I'm glad I didn't. I almost always camp solo and often for 2 week trips out west to Moab or Idaho/Montana (maybe Big Bend this winter). I like setting up a relatively minimal but complete base camp in 1 location for up to 3 or 4 days--a nice Gazelle tent, 12v fridge (and Jackery), combo grill w/burner, Waterport, Luggable Loo, nice folding chair, and the standby $8 black/yellow storage bin for supplies. Maybe a fly rod and waders. Everything loads up in the bed of the Raptor and I'm able to stay mobile to explore trails or just head into town for supplies whenever I want. All that gear at a fraction of the cost of a rooftop.

    @plus790@plus790 Жыл бұрын
    • I think there are still a lot of advantages to a roof top tent, but just like anything there are some compromises as well. Keeping things minimalist works for many folks, but everyones has different needs and ways they like to enjoy getting off the grid.

  • You should look at hatchet overland instead of Ursa minor. Hatchet seems more efficient since you can access from the rear and not have to remove panels to get up/down in Ursa minor.

  • Nice setup, Brad. Personally I’d stick with the portable power bank. I like the size and that it’s not permanent to one vehicle. The way things are going you may need to run your house off it. I’ve got a two door JK that I’m in the middle of modifying. Like you I removed the back seat. I’m setting mine up to sleep inside the Jeep on those cold winter days or when in grizzly bear country. I have a shelf for storage while keeping the floor open. I also have a roof rack as my storage space is limited. I’m a fan of roof racks for what I consider obvious reasons. I hope to bump in to you one of these days on the trails. Until then have fun building that dope rig.

  • One thing you always talked about with your your other Jeeps was the GVWR. Is there any significant difference with the 392??? Obviously a larger, heavier motor. The red/gold color combo is cool. So much of everything is blacked out today. An Ursa Minor would be a seriously cool option. With the Ursa Minor you could do a solar panel system.

    @scottymac5174@scottymac5174 Жыл бұрын
    • I think the 392 has the lowest GVWR of any vehicle I've owned at only 850, so just trying to be mindful. The Ursa would add about 150 lbs and might be worth the sacrifice.
